Haven't used my dryer in months because I thought my son broke it drying his sneakers. Come to find out from this amazing video, it was the switch!! No more laundromat for us!! Thank you so much!!
You are my hero. 9 seconds in and I knew you were matching my energy. I flipped the door switch a couple times and it started up fine. It might be a problem later. But it's working now. Wife is happy.
I have to say, this is the absolute, unqualified BEST "how to" video I've ever seen Honestly, great job. I use TH-cam for all of my repair needs and this is really good.
Thank you for your calm, thorough, thoughtful advice. You stayed on subject and didn’t make me even more nervous than I was with 20 lbs wet clothes at 7 pm. It’s a door switch. You’re a hero!
Perfect!!! It was the thermal fuse!!! I’ve never done something like this before but making ends meet these dates and this was a blessing. $4 vs god knows what!!! Thank u.
Amazing. You’ve just saved me hundreds of dollars. I disassembled the timer thinking it was the start button. I ended up cleaning the terminals from your other video just to realize the start button was the on and off switch. I then found this video and long story short, it’s not the start switch, it’s the door switch 😂😂😂 It broke off
Hey Ben I have a maytag washer model MVW7232HW0 when you press start it senses then goes immediately to saying cycle complete. I can't recall if it sprays any water or not but don't believe so. I've had this problem on the older models but those models have a motor and motor start capacitor. This one doesn't have a capacitor I see and has more of a stator style motor. You've been helpful in the past so thought I'd pick your brain. Going to go through it tomarrow step by step.
This video was SO helpful!! It was the thermal fuse that went out on ours and I got it fixed quick with next day shipping from Amazon on the weekend. Thank you so much for the very detailed video!
Thanks for the tips! Door switch tab broke off so when I initially checked I didn’t see it. Started watching this and saw it right away, and verified that was the problem. Already ordered a new one 🤙🏼
JUST A NOTICE!!! My dryer would not start. I checked everything, EVERYTHING, before taking it apart to test the motor. When I had performed the continuity test on the white & blue wire connect and then the white & black wire connect into the motor switch, everything was good. SO!! I did a VOLTAGE TEST where I put a jump wire for the door switch to mimic the door being closed. I put my multimeter on ACV 250. I plugged the dryer in. Set the timer to heat dry and pushed the start switch. BOO-YAH!!! It worked. So then I removed the multimeter probes from the connection and tried the start switch again. It is still working. APPARENTLY when I had pushed those probes into the wire harness, I snugged up a loose wire. EVERYONE told me that it was VERY rare that a motor would go bad on a Whirlpool dryer, especially a 3 year old dryer. I was about to load this dryer up and take it to a parts shop to put a new motor in. WHEW!!! Saved a few hundred dollars by checking everything.
Thanks for this video! Saved so much money going through the various things that could be wrong. Ended up buying a new fuse and my dryer is running again!
Thermal Fuse was the problem. Thank you so much for your easy to follow instructions and the video close ups that really helped a novice fix her dryer.
Thank You ! One of the other videos I have watched mention nothing about disconnecting one of the wires from the thermal sensor before testing : once I disconnected one of the wires the sensor tested bad ! I think this is my problem ! Think You Again !
It was the door switch for me, thanks for all the tips, my ancient kenmore 70 series lives another day! I replaced the belt and rollers earlier this year. All that was still cheaper than getting a new dryer
Nice video. Thank you for showing me that the drum spins counterclockwise while it's working: that could be relevant. I wonder if it would make it easier to put the door on if you leaned the dryer back while you're doing it. 👀🙂
Would the dryer cut out if the thermal fuse tripped or just not start again? I was using the dryer last night to tumble a couple of items and it was working fine. After opening to remove the items, it will no longer start. Start switch has continuity, door switch seems to be fine, turned off dryer when opened, removing rear cover next. Yeah it was the thermal fuse. I actually replaced the timer while I was in there. The original quit a few months ago and when I opened my old GE dryer the dial is from the same manufacturer. I removed the timer and swapped to the other dial, I am glad I looked because the Kenmore timer was 220V and the GE was 110V so I checked the other connectors with an extra blade and found 120V to plug into. Appreciate the video, made the repair a cinch.
UPDATE!!! In March I had left the comment below. I had found that when I had check the white, blue and black wires at the motor, I had accidently caused one of those wires to be tightened up in it's socket position. This was what was wrong with my dryer not starting. unfortunately, a few days ago, the dryer quit again. I just knew it had to be that wire again, but unsure which one it was. I found that, when I got back to the wire coupler that attaches to the motor, when I had pulled on each of the three wires, the white wire was very loose. I unhooked the coupler and seen that there was some discoloring where the white wire was. It was sparking due to being loose. I had to use the probe of my multimeter to adjust the white wire connector. Then re-installed the coupler. And we are all good, again.
A shoe hung in the barrel and stopped the rolling. It would not turn back on. I unplugged waited 10 minutes plugged it back in turned breaker back on and it’s working great !👍
Hey was this causing the dryer to not start at all? Just trying to figure out whether I need a thermal fuse or not my dryer will not start at all and the washer works fine. Stackable whirlpool
@alexy6012 ended up a breaker was blown causing dryer not to come on but washer still did for some reason. Than I found out I needed thermal fuse to get heat back but got it working.
Omg thank you I was so confused I just moved into the campus apartment and I was wondering what was up. The door just didn’t click into place probably.
I can see my heater coil turn bright Orange in the left side back vent and it’s extremely hot do you have any idea about that? But my dryer won’t turn on
So i took everything apart, tested everything (all good) and put it back together and it magically works. Any idea what could cause this intermittent issue?
Brand new dryer just changed from a 3 wire plug to a 4 wire plug as prescribed and the only way The dryer works is if I put my neutral wire from the center terminal back onto the green case ground.
November 16, From Quebec, thanks. The little plastic switch at the top left inside corner of the door’s open is broker, that’s why the play button doesn’t work…. Now I have to find a way to find one and change it.
My older Maytag dryer problem started with the drum ? Continuing to turn when I opened the door. I had to slam the door closed 2 times before it would stop! And now it won’t start when the dial is in a cycle and I push the start button😞. The black door switch is limp and has been for awhile.
Will the switches still receive power if the thermal fuse is blown? I can feel the timer and start button click when there is power. But, they don't click if the door is open or the dryer is unplugged
What if when you open the door the light isn’t coming on but the star wheel is def clicking when you turn it, but still no action coming on when button is pressed
My old faithful, old school Whirlpool GAS dryer sounds like it wants to start but will not kick in. Does this sound like a thermal fuse. I used it twice today without issue...guess third time was not the charm.
We have a Whirlpool dryer model # WED4850HW0 that stopped running after 3 minutes. It is 3 years old. I checked all the suggested issues as shown in this video. Nothing helped. I found something odd. I turned the dryer timer switch to a cycle, then pressed the start switch. I only heard a minute click of the switch as I pushed it. The dryer did not come on. The odd thing was when I opened the dryer door, I heard a "thunk" sound and felt a vibration from the "thunk" of the start switch. This also happened when I set the dry cycle, then pushed start. Nothing happened until I turned the dryer timer / cycle switch to the next dry cycle. When the timer switch was turned passed the off between cycles, the audible "thunk" sound and the vibration from the "thunk" of the start switch happened again as it did when I opened the dryer door. SO, when the timer dry cycle was ended by either the door opening, triggering the door switch, or when turning the timer to the off position, this audible "thunk" sound and the vibration from the "thunk" of the start switch happens. Any ideas?
I'm clearly overlooking something obvious. My drum lamp won't come on and the dryer won't work at all. The light is a clue, but I'm not yet certain what that means? Best I can tell the lamp is good. The fuses are good too. I hear a click when I push the door switch, but I'll go back and use this test rather than the tests from similar videos. Any further guidance?
testing the door switch, I do see the infinite resistance then zero when pressed between the outer two leads, I bought this dryer in 2016, so maybe the door switch may still be faulty?
We replaced the thermal fuse like 4-5 months ago and the dryer stopped working again after using it, so first thing we tested was the door switch, we used tape till we got a new one and it worked for a little bit but stopped again, so we then bought the start switch and it's still not coming on. We tested the thermal fuse and got a reading so if we tape the door switch and turn the drum counter clockwise as we press the start button and it is not coming on does that mean the motor could be dead also?
I need help someone. I have an older estate whirlpool electric dryer. I bought this house and had an electric company come out and replace and update some outlets -as well as the breaker box. So during the move my kid said they almost lost the dryer while moving it into the uhaul truck. That it didn’t fall. I see no damage of it on the outside from a fall off a ramp. It worked great before the move. Now it doesn’t. I can move the timer and sometimes it will come on and click and sometimes it doesn’t. So when I hear the timer on I hit the start button but nothing. I can turn the temp from high to low okay but on the lowest temp the timer clicking stops. I bought a multi meter and new thermal fuse kit for it. I’m doing this by myself. Can someone lead me to my first to places before taking the whole thing apart?
What about a Whirlpool dryer that will start, run for about 30 seconds and then slowly die? If you leave it off a few minutes you can start it again. It won’t start back right away after it dies.
Mine worked great til this morning. Came home from work and it just buzzed/hums. Can hear that it has power. Door switch is fine. Doesn't spin easy by hand at all.
Through the process of testing my dryer, I took the cord off. After I put the cord back on, the dryer is running again. I'm happy with the result, but I'm definitely confused.

Saved me time and money. $10 for a replacement fuse and DONE! Thank you.
Nice!
Good job, camera work is nicely done, very detailed and informative, keep it up
Best troubleshooting video on TH-cam. Thanks s

Best tutorial that I have found so far. My motor went out on mine.. Thank You!!!
What symptom(s) did you have that led you to the diagnosis of a bad motor and how old is your dryer? Thanks!
It was the door switch! Cheap $7 fix. Thank you!

Changing T fuse, worked for a short time then broke again. What could cause this ?
Dryer vent could be clogged/bound somewhere causing the heat to stay in dryer rather than go outside.

Only if you're doing live voltage testing, otherwise, have it unplugged.
