Oh wow, I played this as a kid. I forgot the name of it and I kept on trying to remember it every once in a while. All I remembered was the first level being a snow slide thingy and the transformation into the big buff guy. It was not enough to find it for the last few years. That was unexpected. Thank you for that. One of the games from my childhood was found.

I'm a big Tonic Trouble fan, but I'd say this was a fair recap. Props for going through it twice! A couple of anecdotes: * This N64 version is near identical to the Windows version that was sold in stores in 1999, but there was a 1997 promotional version for the PC, which had continous enviroments instead of the challenge rooms seen here. Appearently most of that work had to be scrapped due to hardware limitations of the time. The final product was clearly rushed as a result. * The popcorn machines, depending on region and console could also be seen draped in Nestle Crunch and Lion branding. The 1997 version had a unbranded Elvis/Johnny Bravo lookin mascot. None of the versions explain why popcorn/chocolate works like spinach in this world. * For the four head puzzle in the pyramid, the correct order was inscribed in the ceiling. Most people I've seen play this have missed that. The 1997 version mercifully made it a game of Simon. Good luck on your venture. You'll need it!
Absolute big brain strat by Newmans Own. They got at least 5 people to buy popcorn 25 years later. It only took them sponsoring a whole video game to get those 5 sales
you are an absolute legend for ** spoiler ** restarting the whole game from the beginning. i would have rage quit and never went back lol. amazing series
I know it can't save a bad game, but the art direction is really great. The game looks beautiful, particularly the animation, which is so expressive and action packed. Hard to pull this stuff off on that old hardware.
I'm a huge platformer fan, and have played a ton of terrible ones, and I have to go back to Mario 64 like once a year to appreciate it. Even compared to other genre classics from the time period like Spyro or Crash it's still leagues ahead.
@@anthonylombardo1261 there were 3D platformers before Super Mario 64. I remember the first 3D Rayman feeling pretty disjointed too, so it's no surprise to me this game is too. Super interesting look at gaming history. Love the series man, great binge material while i grind slayer on the OSRS shattered relics league
thab’s n64 game book reports are my new favourite thing on youtube i guess the purple jokes are that they were expecting to see rayman as the hero, and instead, purple bald rayman showed up?

Just found your series. Keep it on youtube. Views are good now but I promise you, over the years these videos will just rack up the views, you edited them wonderfully and you show enough of the game while not being overly long/boring. Long videos for bigger games are great. Short videos for racing/sports games are perfect. I had an N64 growing up, and although i would come to regret not getting a Playstation like my best friend, at least between the two of us we had both systems and it generated a lot of fun for us.
Man, I definitely enjoyed this one as a rental. Fast forward twenty years and it's aged worse than BattleTanx. I love the teasers for the next game, please keep those up!
I just realized that the flying sections are really reminiscent of Spyro's flying sections, down to flying through the rings and everything. Interesting.
This Series is amazing. As much as I enjoyed TMRs content watching all of it just wasn't fun or practical, so having them in edited video's like this which I'm sure takes a lot of extra time is much appreciated.
The purple thing could be a reference to Rayman getting recoloured to blue in the Japanese release of Rayman 2? Released the the same year. PS just found this series and binging on it a bit great work.
When Thab gets a hundred or so games behind him, I’m looking forward to seeing a little graph of the “Thab ratings” to see how the full N64 catalog held up
I miss weird games. The drive toward realism has kind of killed off all of the interesting aesthetics that hardware and software limitations necessitated. I've never heard of this game, but it sure has a great look.
I just found this series and will hopefully continue to see it till the end. You deserve and get my like and subscribe for having to basically run through this awful game twice. That is the kind of the dedication to your craft and viewers that TH-camrs should replicate.
Around 4:00. I really like that the platform you're standing on becomes transparent so you can more easily see the next platform you're supposed to jump onto.
I absolutely love this series. The only thing better than watching these videos on TH-cam is being in the chat while he's completing these games on Twitch.
I remember seeing ads in Nintendo Power and was curious, but never noticed it in rental or retail stores. Could’ve been a decently fun weekend as a kid, but glad to catch it as an adult anyhow.
I remember playing this game as a kid. I never questioned why the popcorn gave herculean strength. It's interesting to learn that it was to promote Newman's brand of popcorn.
This game was no hit, but it got fairly good reviews and I always wanted to play it. Unfortunately I never got the chance to. Good thing there are your videos. Now I can experience it through your eyes. :D
I think one potential idea to get people interested in clicking is to make the titles like you do with mario maker 2... something interesting/weird/crazy from the video. In this case, the softlock experience would have been great to mention
This series is so good!! Thanks for all the effort you put into these videos thab! I remember being in chat when the softlock happened and everyone was just like 😬
I have a soft spot for this game of my childhood. To its defense, the PC version had more musical tracks but they probably wouldnt fit on a N64 cartridge so they were cut
Probably Tonic Trouble was more famous in Europe than in US, specially BEFORE its launch. I remember MANY previews about Tonic Trouble and its presence in articles of game expos, during years, in European game magazines (general or Nintendo specific). When finally appeared... the rates were a kind of disappointment: Not near to Banjo Kazooie or the soon to be released Rayman 2. Starshot: Space Circus Fever (another french company game) was ANOTHER case similar to Tonic Trouble: Very hyped 3D platform during years/months in the european magazines... but the final product was also another "disappointment". I suppose you'll discover sooner or later. Was that era when everyone wanted to do the next "Super Mario 64". Impressive your dedication to beat all the games for the system, by the way.
I like that you're honest about how much you enjoy what you're playing. With a few QoL improvements this seems like it wouldn't be such a bad game. 3D platformers have so many inherently annoying aspects to them, not least of all the actual platforming, camera management, etc. I love this era of gaming where production values were a bit hit and miss and developers were open to experimenting with weird advertising tie-ins.
around 24:30ish you were having trouble with running unless you angled the camera diagonally. are you using an n64 controller or a substitute? the control stick mapping is different and can distort movement (especially diagonals)

I didn’t get to that part yet, but him saying if he game over’d he would have to restart sounded like foreshadowing lol
Read this before watching the video and got more and more worried as I got further into the video without it happening yet lol
That soft lock broke my heart. Sorry Thab, glad you did it all over again, as painful as it was

Excellent hydraulic press guy impression
Games like this which are decent just show how Mario 64 and other similar platforms were soooooo much better in basically every aspect
