Even after 20 years on the internet where every obscure thing has a wegpage, it's still refreshing to see such a well researched, well put together video series that includes even the most obscure video game entry. Love your determination facing that huge library scope. Way to go!

Total props to Jeremy for nailing the joke delivery in the next episode preview. Also this seems totally fine, I probably would've played it if it had been localized circa 1997 when Ranma seemed like a really amazing thing. Which honestly was a time when anything actively Japanese seemed like a revelation to me!

Thanks as always for the video...on the subject of the title, the Japanese is らなま1/2かくれんぼデスマッチ - this is quite clearly kakurenbo desumacchi. Kakurenbo is a Japanese children's game, basically hide & seek. Desumacchi is death match in katakana. So, Ranma 1/2: Hide & Seek Death Match. The English sources translating it otherwise have got some wires crossed, the split between hiragana & katakana make it clear where the words divide. This is the entry in Famitsu's database, for reference: www.famitsu.com/cominy/?m=pc&a=page_h_title&title_id=13772

Thanks for making these, the detail (especially for the obscure stuff) is impressive and appreciated.

"Ranma, on the other half..." Was this intentional? I hope so!

Total freudian slip, but I decided to keep it.

One of the catchiest anime title songs in history, LOL!

I'm pondering when we get to Street Combat and Ranma 1/2 Hard Battle for the SNES.

Oh my god the nostalgia. The anime clips... I can still hear the old Viz dub. I never played this one, but I did play a fighting game based on the show for SNES. I am shit at those, though, so I have no idea if it was good.

Yeah, the Japanese voices still sound weird to me. The subbed tapes were $10 more than dubbed, and I wasn't made of money in college.

"This game is soo uncute" I see what you did there

Oh gee, that pain in your voice in the episode preview sounds soul-deep.
A friend in middle school had a copy of this game in a bootleg cartridge with about a hundred other GB titles (Deadalian Opus and Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 were noteworthy in their presence). I never saw Ranma 1/2, however, even when it aired on Puerto Rican broadcast television. So, the references to the anime were totally lost on me and I had no clue why the heck this guy kept changing around when he touched kettles or buckets!

One day Jeremy will stop doing these and we'll all recreate the famous "congratulations" scene

At least it's a good puzzle game, or so I suppose, judging by Puzznic's PC Engine version. I'm not familiar with the Game Boy port.

"It's not miserable" is the highest praise you can give to a Banpresto game.

Hey, Super Robot Wars is a series of anime based games from Banpresto, and they generally turn out fairly well. ^_^

I can be wrong cause i know very little of the anime but i think all the curses made the person weaker. Even the one that turns a person into a panda bear. Kind of adding onto the curse part rather than just changing you. Cause if it just changed you that'll suck but you can get use to it faster than being changed and always weaker from it.

I could be wrong but I believe the romanization of the title should have the first space placed differently. In the manga and anime, I think lakurenbo is what they call their "no restrictions martial arts" so I believe it should translitterate to "Kokurenbo desu". Just a small nitpick.

    • @JeremyParish
      @JeremyParish  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

There's not a single English source that romanizes it that way, and hundreds that list it as "Kakuren Bodesu." Going with the numbers on this one.

@@JeremyParish actually I have to side with the op on this one....I'm studying Japanese and kakurenbo is a word and means hide and seek, which is exactly what seems to happen in this game 🤣 jisho.org/word/%E9%9A%A0%E3%82%8C%E3%82%93%E5%9D%8A

I will say I get not being a fan of a lot of what Bandai/Banpresto puts out. But I still love Super Robot Wars and SD Gundam G Generation and the like. (And I still really want to play Ghiren's Greed)
