Game Boy World

  • Those blockheads at Kemco give us another cartoon-based game that has no substantial connection to the property. Snoopy's Magic Show is only a Peanut's game because it has Snoopy on the box; otherwise, it's just another in a long line of unremarkable and poorly designed puzzle action games for Game Boy. I know, right?

    Craziness. I haven't seen or heard anything from this game since playing it at a friend's house in the early 90s, yet the moment I heard one of those themes, I instantly recalled the rest of it. The human mind is wondrous.

    This has by far been my favorite intro in the series thus far. The build up of what it could have been something quite special...but no, another wasted license on a mediocre-at-best puzzle action game. Kudos to you Jeremy. Keep up the stellar work.

    Great synospsis the of the Peanuts comic strip. I grew up loving Peanuts, because my dad had several small anthologies from the 1960's of Schultz's strip, so I read and devoured each of those books many times over.

    I didn't know so many early games on the Game Boy were puzzle games. I kinda draw a comparison to Wii's early "WiiWare" library, which also was filled with more puzzle games than it should've had.

    This one game is one that I played back then and which I still remember for one thing: its music. I don't know why, but I do like the charming little tunes in this one.
    Other than that it's indeed pretty generic. The fact that it as nothing to do with Snoopy isn't exactly surprising. Kemco would pretty much develop any kind of game concept and slap onto it a random license among the many they happened to have under their hood back then. The concept of crazy castle isn't exactly any more relevant to the Looney Tunes or Bugs Bunny in particular, than Snoopy is in this case. And Kemco often DID swap licenses between territories, like I think one of the Crazy Castle games had Mickey in it instead of Bugs Bunny in a certain territory or something like that? I can't quite remember off the top of my head.

    • @JeremyParish
      @JeremyParish  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +RudyC3 You should watch the Crazy Castle episode! It goes into depth on that game's topsy-turvy licensing (it alternately featured Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, and Roger Rabbit).

    Peanuts IS all the things this video says it is, but--as so many other tributes to the strip have likewise elided--it could ALSO be just *brutally* cutesy, cloying, and repetitive, generally when Schultz leaned too hard to Snoopy. That seems like a relevant thing to note with regards to this game.

    • @Neverhoodian
      @Neverhoodian 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Agreed. It didn't help that Mr. Schulz kept the strip running long after he ran out of good ideas. I loved Peanuts growing up, but even kid me could tell he was slipping in a bad way in the 90's. The last few years were saddening more than anything else, with the same handful of hackneyed jokes and anemic punchlines against a backdrop of shaky-lined drawings from a hand ravaged by age. But hey, at least it was still better than Family Circus.

    I'm a little torn about the Evangelion preview music at the end. I kinda like Game Boy World for its historical, documentarian quality to it, and frankly, the Evangelion music kinda erodes that quality. However I loved Evangelion and it has great music, and it's so much fun to hear it again.
    I guess the question is, how seriously should we take Game Boy World?

    • @JeremyParish
      @JeremyParish  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Brad Gravett The series has always had goofy little codas - just because it's a fairly serious project doesn't mean it has to be dry and straight-faced. If you're not a fan, though, you can skip past those last few seconds. I specifically include that stuff after the outro for that reason!

    • @swankidelic
      @swankidelic 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jeremy Parish Those are all good points. It doesn't affect the core content of the chapter. And I love that pang of nostalgia, so I don't want to argue too much =)
