Game Boy World

  • June 1990 brings the very first Game Boy sequel to an earlier Game Boy game. Naturally, that sequel is Boxxle II. I mean, everything else on Game Boy has been based on Boxxle, so why not a proper sequel?
As this episode details, however, Boxxle II honestly has no reason to exist - Game Boy's glut of puzzlers has given us brain-teasers far more inventive than this straight port of the original box-pusher. Including, I'm afraid, the game that immediately precedes Boxxle II: SNK's Game Boy debut, Dexterity.
With the Boxxles as bookends, I've also taken this opportunity to offer a recap of just HOW MANY puzzle-like games we've seen on Game Boy to date. Buckle in - it's about to get funky.
Thanks for watching, and please be sure to check out the Game Boy index I'm building at www.gameboyworld.com, or support this project through Patreon ( / gamespite ) or by picking up related books at Amazon! (www.amazon.com/s/ref=dp_byline...)

This might sound weird, but the large swarms of utterly mediocre games is kinda what's interesting to me about this series. Large detailed episodes on games nobody gave a shit about is surprisingly entertaining.

That's what was great about this era to me. Stuff was just so brilliantly and almost unnervingly simple. Boxxle is great for this, as are Alleyway and Card Game.

I gave a rather large poop about about Dexterity. It was my favorite Gameboy game. I resent your remark, sir.

I'm happy for this series. Great episode and congrats on getting to June '90! Here's to many happy monochrome years to come.

I'm really enjoying these videos. My handheld of choice in the '90s was the Game Gear, so I missed most of these early Game Boy games. I especially like all the background you dig up on each game. It might be interesting to note in the video descriptions what color scheme you're using for the game footage.

Love the GB World series, Toast. I was given Shove It!! as a young kid so unfortunately watching footage of these Boxxle games gives me serious anxiety, but I still enjoyed the video :)

This video just reminded me of the games I used to play a lot back then, which was Hyper Lode Runner and Penguin Land.

Man...dexterity looks fun, but at the same time really frustrating. I could see myself cursing out those block flipping ghosts, destroying all my hard work.

Dexterity almost feels like a predecessor to every puzzle in any given Pokémon game, namely in the gyms.

So cute on MSX, and vexingly complex to boot, great game!

One overlooked feature of Dexterity is that stunned monsters can be thrown into other enemies taking them both out also there is a a boss fight at the end.

I came here to say Dexterity should have been called Frustration, but after reading the comments and finding out you can throw the enemies, this game is way more fun.

You can throw stunned enemies in dexterity and even kill other foes with this throw. Watching your gameplay seemed like you didn't know this, since you didn't even mention it.
    It's c core gameplay mechanic.

Another greatly detailed episode, Jeremy! I like the recap, and how you categorized the 3 different types of puzzle games. Strangely enough, despite the rarity of Boxxle II, I happened upon a manual for the game in the wild at random, and have yet to find the cart, but once I do, it will be interesting to see how it differs from the first, aside from the obvious graphical overhaul/upgrade.

Did you actually buy all these games secondhand to do this series? If so, that's a very impressive quest. Love it!

Yeah, yeah, that's a pentominoes game! That's what Tetris was based on in the first place! Neat! Now I gotta find a version of that.

+AntAnt It is, but the next game in the release list after Spider-man is Pipe Dream, which was covered already. For the sake of keeping the book content contiguous, I'm going to include ASM in this volume.

      @UubTay 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@JeremyParish I found it already! You reference a Q*Bert video you've made around 8:23, and I was confused because I didn't see it on your channel. I didn't know about Retronauts at the time or that short Retronauts Micro videos series, and it being distinct from the Video Works series you feature on this channel.

I'm surprised no mention was brought to the tile-flipping similarities between Dexterity and the more action oriented Mendel Palace on NES. Oh well, NES Works should get to it in my lifetime. I think.
