The anime didnt do terrible, in fact it did pretty well in the ratings, and fans wanted more in Japan, they just allowed 100 percent freedom because the studio believed the Japanese folklore wouldn't go well over with American audiences, the English producer of the anime just flat out lied and made up the story about the anime being bad in Japan, and expressed a dislike or no-care for anime series in general

And the random of patchouli wasn't so random, I was just playing off the visual of him recoiling from the smudge stick. Fun fact: the sub version of this anime didn't get much attention, so they sent it over to get it dubbed, but said they didn't care what they did with it, so basically the voice actors got the scriped but decided not to use it, so it basically all improvised while still following the plot
The anime didnt do terrible, in fact it did pretty well in the ratings, and fans wanted more in Japan, they just allowed 100 percent freedom because the studio believed the Japanese folklore wouldn't go well over with American audiences, the English producer of the anime just flat out lied and made up the story about the anime being bad in Japan, and expressed a dislike or no-care for anime series in general
