I just loved how Z came up with 4 Fruit + Cheese combo's that are ALL traditionally good and have been a food pair for decades to centuries lol. Watermelon + Feta Salad is a thing, Apple/Pear on cheese platters along with Grapes, Apricots and the like has been around forever and Pineapple has been paired with cheese a lot as well. Fruit + Cheese just works.
Watching them eating pizza and the one thing that stuck in my mind is Mr. Z saying you wouldn’t put cheese and watermelon together. But ask any Greek and they will tell you that you can, as long as it’s feta cheese. Sweet and salty…the perfect combination!

Here in Greece we eat watermellon with feta cheese .. so maybe the inventor of the hawaian pizza (who was Greek Canadian by the way) took this idea and put something sweet in the pizza to resemble this savoury-sweet experience.
Watermelon is sweet but not acidic, I can see going well with the salty feta, just like prosciutto and melon we do in Italy. But pineapple is damn acidic, and you are mixing it with already acidic tomato. NOPE.

Would love to see the trio do a pizza tour. New York, Detroit, Chicago, and 3 local favorite spots in each one. For instance, Chicago is also known for cracker-thin pizza as well (Vito and Nick's)
@@Swatican well tavern style, from what I have known, is just thin crust, which can be as thin as cracker thin, just cut into squares instead of triangles.
Agreed, GreyDevil!! It would be cool if they did a pizza trip: start in Chicago, then go to Detroit (“Buddy’s” is the originator of Detroit style), then on to NJ/New York and Massachusetts for the One Bite app top-rated places! It will be a blast for them, and for us! 🍕 😋
That’s NOT Chicago deep dish pizza! Besides, you should try real Chicago pizza that we eat on a regular basis, tavern style, thin super crispy tavern style.
I always love his reaction 😂Also, this pizza does not compare to a real Chicago deep dish pie. The real one is much bigger and once you sit down and order it the wait time is almost an hour but it’s always worth the wait.
@@simo_voxthat statement still will never make sense to me , it’s crust, cheese, and a tomato based sauce. if it quacks like a duck and walks like a duck….
Yes! Take Mr.Z to Chicago! As a Chicagoan I have recommendations! Malnati’s, Uno, and Pequod’s are great (look up Pequod’s). Also, try the tavern style thin crust. It’s got a thin, crispy crust, cut into squares, ask the locals which is better. On the south side they say deep dish is for tourists, there’s a big north/south rivalry. Try different spots, ask locals, have fun!
I like Unos bc I'm on the east coast and it's all I can get. But in Chicago, I'd take Gino's over Unos. I wanna see Mr Z's face when confronted with the wheel of sausage, lol. And I know Malnati is king amongst you, but the sauce lacked something for me.
I LIVE for Grace’s infectious laughing cackle 🤣🥰 (at least I think it’s Grace) Love these episodes with Mr Z, especially since the friendship between Josh, Ollie and Mr Z is so evident. It make an entertaining and funny episode heartwarming also. 🥰🥰 Yes please to more episodes with Mr Z. Regardless of where or what it’s about (hough my personal preference is content trying good food, rather than food you already know isn’t great).
This video is so hilarious to me. I showed this to my husband. He's born and raised in Chicago, we currently live in Texas. His grandparents on his mom's side are immigrants from Italy. He raves about deep dish pizza. it has too much sauce for my liking, but it's good. 😂
Bring Mr. Z to Chicago! YES! Also, I really love a super thin crust pepperoni & pineapple pizza. Sounds nasty, but its the perfect combination of spicy/salty/sweet.
He said eating pizza with a knife and fork was “blasphemy” but I’ve been to Italy twice and everyone there ate regular pizza with a knife and fork all the time in restaurants 😭
No more south Korea on Jolly please. Josh has his own channel for that. I miss all the cool stuff they used to do, like try not to laugh with their mouths full.
I might be a biased Chicagoan, but we do have some amazing pizza. Highly recommend a fly to Chi for a Za marathon. Lou Malanti’s, Pequod’s, And Spacca Napoli…you boys can’t go wrong.
Idk, I’m not a professional chef, but as an Italian I think that the American variants are legit. The New York and the Chicago variants aren’t obviously considerable Italian, but they have a story to tell.
I agree- just because some food has its origin in another country doesn't mean that if another country takes it and modifies it to their taste that is somehow isn't good. Sure you can say it is not real Italian style pizza but I don't know anybody was ever making that claim to begin with.
First things first, as an American college student from the Midwest, saying this is authentic Chicago deep dish pizza is like saying that fortune cookies are an authentic Chinese tradition! Take Mr. Z on a REAL American Pizza tour! Keith from the Try Guys will show you and Mr. Z REAL Chicago deep dish pizza (he worked at a Chicago pizzeria back in the day) Casey Neistat can introduce you and Mr. Z to New York style pizza and I personally will show you Detroit style deep dish pizza from Michigan!!!!
Mr Z picks up and folds deep dish because he is an Italian bender. What a legend. Not to scandalize him on purpose but the first time I liked pineapple on pizza it was pineapple, blue cheese, and breakfast bacon.
It's interesting that Mr. Z mentioned putting pears and cheese together. I've actually had a pear and gorgonzola pizza in Italy, and I've honestly never seen anything like it at any pizzeria anywhere else in the world. He also mentioned apples and cheese, which are sometimes combined in apple pie here in the US. I've even had and apple, cheddar and jalapeno pie. Aside from that, I've seen fruit and cheese served together as part of a multi-course meal in France. I've seen fruit and cheese paired as part of a fondue in Switzerland. I could keep going, but the point is, fruit and cheese are paired together all the time. Not sure why pineapple and cheese would be different. Oh, also, Philadelphia makes a pineapple and cream cheese spread that goes on bagels. And it's pretty tasty.
Mr Z is also overlooking how the pineapple complements the ham on a Hawaiian pizza, and how tomato, which is a fruit, also pairs with cheese on every pizza, albeit in a paste / sauce form.
Yes! Mr. Z in Chicago would be great! Actually, you three should take an American pizza tour! Chicago, NYC, LA, St. Louis, Detroit, Colorado, Connecticut, Ohio, and Omaha. There are indeed many regional styles of pizza in the US. Heck, you should get to Rhino’s Pizzeria, in Rochester, NY. They invented the Pickle Pizza. Mr. Z should try the pickle pizza, at Rhino’s!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😜🤣🤣🤣❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥💋💋🫶🏻🇺🇸🌸
THAT IS A TERRIC IDEA! If they can pull it off, I think they can do that in segments like once month or once every other month because that is a lot of pizza consumption.
I would LOVE to see Mr. Z go to Chicago. I think Mr. Z would benefit from trying the best NYC pizza that you guys ate in a previous video. Maybe a multi state Pizza tour????Esp on the East Coast = NYC. Connecticut pizza, New Jersey Boardwalk Pizza, Philadelphia pizza...maybe visit some Little Italys too while enroute. It would be EPIC.
I haven't used this phrase for a while now, but Mr. Z is the definition of "the Struggle is Real" while they were eating the Hawaiian deep dish pizza 😂
Where I used to get deep dish the crust around the edge was not so wide and the fillings weren't sunken into the center, it was flat across the top. They also served it in the cast iron skillet that they had baked it in, they wore oven mitts and placed a cork board under it to protect the table when they delivered it and made sure to warn you every time that it was hot.

I’ve tasted some of the best pizza in the US (located east coast, Jersey/NYC). Hawaiian Pizza, when it’s done correctly with Canadian bacon, is by far the best flavor around. Flavorful cheese, sweet fruit, salty meat, sauce with a bite, and a crisp crust…. magnifico! It is a match made in heaven.
The way they said "Noooo" at the mention of watermelon and cheese XD I'm glad to let them know that having cold watermelon with bread and aged salty cheese is a delicacy in Egypt 😅esp during the hot summer XD it's a different take on the sweet and salty flavour that surprisingly works well 😆
in Italy is extremely common in the summer to have melon and salty ham, but not watermelon couse is too watery, we pair that mostly with other fruits and/or vodka! 😅
I had a Hawaiian pizza on a trip to Romania in the early 2000s. Due to the scarcity of pineapples in the country at that time they used apples instead. You know what? It was delicious!
Your videos with Mr. Z are priceless! As a Chicagoan who is a big fan of deep dish pizza, I would love for you guys to bring him here! Two great places to try are Pequod’s Pizza and Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Company (they sell pizza pot pies). Take care.
Also a Chicagoan. Love Pequods❤ you should try Burt’s Pizza. If not mistaken, he co-founded Pequods and branched out on his own. I prefer Burts over Pequods. But they are both delicious
Chicago’s Pizza is so underrated!! I have several celiacs in my family and Chicago’s Pizza has the best gluten free deep dish by FAR of any pizzeria in the Chicago area. I actually like it more than their regular deep dish crust.
1. Giordano's 2. Chicago pizza is not just deep dish, thin crust cut into squares is what we usually eat. 3. I've lived in multiple cities and Chicago Chicago has the best pizza. Buffalo is in second and WAY better than NYC Pizza. 4. I was just in Italy and there are plenty of places that sell pizza with pineapple. 5. MOD pizza is very similar to what you would find in Italy, so just think about that.
I love the Italian playlist. Mr Z is awesome. Totally wish I could experience Z’s food he knows his stuff. I just tell myself someday lol someday I’ll get there
If you want the best deep dish, Pequods is the gold standard. But true Chicago-style pizza isn’t deep dish. It is the super thin crust tavern cut pie like you get at Vito & Nick’s. You should definitely visit our fair city with Mr. Z. So much to enjoy here!
I always give Italians a hard time cause of how prideful they seem to be, especially when it comes to judging their Italian American relatives! Our families were forced to migrate here due to war and famine, and they used anything they could to make something that reminded them of home. Sure, deep dish isn’t “traditional”, but it was invented out of necessity and nostalgia. Italy’s beautiful and we’ll always know they invented so much of what we’ve recreated, but it doesn’t make our version of”lesser”.
Gotta remember the heritage of pizza in the US is from Italians and it's developed culturally within the states. We had a lot of Italian immigrants here in West Virginia and that's how we got the pepperoni roll as our state food. It was developed by an Italian for miners to easily carry their lunch into the mines. We have our local chain "The Pizza Place" that's been here for decades that was started and still own by Italian immigrants to WV. Greasy it may be but it's hands down the best in town with thick and thin crust. Lot's of German, Irish and Italian heritage in WV.
Love the interaction! Yes to bringing Mr Z to Chicago, but also have him try Italian Beef sandwich while here. Do a tour of some of our midwest inspired Italian restaurants. Since you like fast food Portillos is very popular for Italian beef in suburbs of Chicago. 😊
I'm dieing watching you guys eat a deep dish pizza with a fork and knife. It's original design was intended to pick up all the toppings as you would a traditional crust.
Because he’s a snob from the city. I come from small town in Piemonte, and I have seen much of the countryside in Italy. Carbonara pizza is a thing in Italy.

Does somebody know if they did take Mister Z to Chicago? I would love to see him in America with the American Italians and their interpretations of classic Italian dishes. Poor Z will have a hard time 😁.
About that Pompeii "Pizza": (quoted from AP News) "… They noted that key ingredients needed to make Italy's iconic dish - tomatoes and mozzarella - were not available when the fresco was painted some 2,000 years ago. Tomatoes were only introduced to Europe from the Americas a few centuries ago, and some histories have it that the discovery of mozzarella led directly to the invention of pizza in nearby Naples in the 1700s. The image is instead believed to be a focaccia covered with fruit, including pomegranate and possibly dates, finished with spices or a type of pesto, experts said. In the fresco, it is served on a silver plate and a wine chalice stands next to it." You're welcome, Mr. Z, you can rest easy
I am from Illinois and the deep dish pizza I had in Chicago and the Chicago suburbs look different than the ones you’re eating and are much bigger. . That being said, I would love to try the ones that you’re eating. It was cool that you compare those pizzas to a Pompeii pizza.
I’m from Chicago and since I live in the Midwest, ranch on pizza is VERY common. I switched out ranch for bleu cheese on my pizza and it’s become one of my favorite combinations. I’m glad Mr. Z can accept me for putting bleu cheese on pizza
"Hawaiian Pizza" always cracks me up. Especially since, as I understand it - it's Canadian-Greek in origin. I read that it was actually created in Canada in 1962 by Sam Panopoulos, a Greek immigrant. (And yes...I DO like pineapple on pizza.)
The actual Hawaiian Pizzas tend to be something of an abomination...but pineapple on pizza can be rather good. Unfortunately, to me, most pizza places have a sauce that's to sweet for pineapple My favorite is a honey bbq sauce with pineapple, bacon, jalapeno, and red onion (sometimes with chicken as well...and a few times, when places have it, pulled pork).

The snobby Italians agree with him.😆
Here in Greece we eat watermellon with feta cheese .. so maybe the inventor of the hawaian pizza (who was Greek Canadian by the way) took this idea and put something sweet in the pizza to resemble this savoury-sweet experience.
Interesting hypothesis.

Watermelon is sweet but not acidic, I can see going well with the salty feta, just like prosciutto and melon we do in Italy.
But pineapple is damn acidic, and you are mixing it with already acidic tomato. NOPE.

I think I saw an interview and he had some extra pineapple in a tin left over and tried it on a ham pizza. Turned out pretty good for the folks who like it. 👍
Would love to see the trio do a pizza tour. New York, Detroit, Chicago, and 3 local favorite spots in each one. For instance, Chicago is also known for cracker-thin pizza as well (Vito and Nick's)
Yeah pub style pizza
@Irishkilla79 I haven't known tavern style to be cracker crust, but it is definitely thinner crust.

So much amazing food in Chicago!
Agreed, GreyDevil!! It would be cool if they did a pizza trip: start in Chicago, then go to Detroit (“Buddy’s” is the originator of Detroit style), then on to NJ/New York and Massachusetts for the One Bite app top-rated places!

Crust to filling proportion is all wrong.
I am SO not a fan of Chicago deep dish... but even I was like, "What is this blasphemy??"
Agreed. Chicago doesn’t have a bready crust, it’s just thin crust pushed up against the sides of a deep pan to hold more ingredients.
@@sdafasdfasdfsdaI prefer deep dish to thin crust because I like a soft bread on the inside. I like to make pizza on garlic bread too.
As a Chicagoan... PLEASE take Mr. Z to Chicago to try our Deep Dish Pizza. 👍💖😀

I came to say the exact same thing
I like Unos bc I'm on the east coast and it's all I can get. But in Chicago, I'd take Gino's over Unos. I wanna see Mr Z's face when confronted with the wheel of sausage, lol. And I know Malnati is king amongst you, but the sauce lacked something for me.
Head out into Chicagoland and hit-up Pal Joey's in West Chicago. Their pizza is SO good!
No to loumalnatis, def go to Giordano's
When it comes to tavern style, nothing beats Vito & Nick's! And I would argue these weren't deep dish. The crust looked very different, much puffier.
I LIVE for Grace’s infectious laughing cackle 🤣🥰 (at least I think it’s Grace)
Love these episodes with Mr Z, especially since the friendship between Josh, Ollie and Mr Z is so evident. It make an entertaining and funny episode heartwarming also. 🥰🥰 Yes please to more episodes with Mr Z. This video is so hilarious to me. I showed this to my husband. He's born and raised in Chicago, we currently live in Texas. His grandparents on his mom's side are immigrants from Italy. He raves about deep dish pizza. it has too much sauce for my liking, but it's good. 😂
Each episode you guys are testing this mans strength and patience. I LOVE IT!!!
He knew he was going to like the pineapple, tried to avoid it LOL
Bring Mr. Z to Chicago! YES! Also, I really love a super thin crust pepperoni & pineapple pizza. Sounds nasty, but its the perfect combination of spicy/salty/sweet.
Not nasty at all. I prefer a pan with extra sauce, pepperoni, pineapple, and jalapeno. Sweet, salty, savory, and spicy.
OMG
Ollie is so quick, witty and cracks me up.

Ollie and any guest is just pure comedy every single time 😂
He said eating pizza with a knife and fork was “blasphemy” but I’ve been to Italy twice and everyone there ate regular pizza with a knife and fork all the time in restaurants 😭
Yeah I’m not sure what he’s talking about, most pizza in Italy isn’t even served sliced so that’s why you use cutlery.
It depends where you are from. Where my mom is from you use a knife and fork, but do not do that in Naples.
Well we cut the slices with knife and fork yes, but we eat the single slices with our hands... that's what he was saying ^^`
Came for this, I've never been to one true pizza joint in Italy that wasn't knife and fork
Yeah! I had pizza in Milan and Venice last month - knife and fork was not unusual, especially with the thin and floppy style of wood fired pizza.
I love how offended and repulsed Mr Z is. Hahaha their friendship is just too precious. When are you guys taking Mr Z to South Korea?

Idk, I’m not a professional chef, but as an Italian I think that the American variants are legit. The New York and the Chicago variants aren’t obviously considerable Italian, but they have a story to tell.
I agree- just because some food has its origin in another country doesn't mean that if another country takes it and modifies it to their taste that is somehow isn't good. Sure you can say it is not real Italian style pizza but I don't know anybody was ever making that claim to begin with.
I don't think they are bad, just don't call that pizza. It's a cheese pie. As an Italian also, I find it so annoying! XD
As an American, I apologize for this blasphemy. I'm new to this deep dish pizza and recently, this became a thing across the USA.
@@Hurley164 recently? Deep dish pizza has been around since the 1940s and certainly has been a thing nationally from before the 2000.

Mr Z picks up and folds deep dish because he is an Italian bender. What a legend. Not to scandalize him on purpose but the first time I liked pineapple on pizza it was pineapple, blue cheese, and breakfast bacon.
" it also looks way more like original Pompeii pizza" he says. I'm crying. Too funny.
THAT IS A TERRIC IDEA! If they can pull it off, I think they can do that in segments like once month or once every other month because that is a lot of pizza consumption.

Love that Ollie never miss an opportunity to trigger Mr. Z. 😅
I just had a watermelon salad at a bbq and it was chunks of watermelon, feta cheese, cucumbers and basil and peppermint. It was so good.
I mean watermelon + feta cheese is the ultimate combo
why not? don't forget fennel.
Watermelon, feta, cucumbers, basil but Chilli flakes instead of peppermint. Trust me, it's good

Of course, this doesn’t go for “Hawaiian” lol
Gotta remember the heritage of pizza in the US is from Italians and it's developed culturally within the states. We had a lot of Italian immigrants here in West Virginia and that's how we got the pepperoni roll as our state food. It was developed by an Italian for miners to easily carry their lunch into the mines. We have our local chain "The Pizza Place" that's been here for decades that was started and still own by Italian immigrants to WV. Greasy it may be but it's hands down the best in town with thick and thin crust. Lot's of German, Irish and Italian heritage in WV.
Mr Z's appearances on this channel just get better and better what a funny guy and good sport he is

About that Pompeii "Pizza": (quoted from AP News)
"… They noted that key ingredients needed to make Italy's iconic dish - tomatoes and mozzarella - were not available when the fresco was painted some 2,000 years ago.
In the fresco, it is served on a silver plate and a wine chalice stands next to it."

Unfortunately, to me, most pizza places have a sauce that's to sweet for pineapple
My favorite is a honey bbq sauce with pineapple, bacon, jalapeno, and red onion (sometimes with chicken as well...and a few times, when places have it, pulled pork).
I prefer a take where pineapple, ham, and bacon is on it. Bacon adds a little more flavor to it.
