    Last year, while visiting family in Detroit, I was initially hesitant about their renowned square pizza. But, after sampling pizzas across Europe, including Italy, and various US cities like Chicago, NY, and LA, I'm convinced that Detroit's distinct style is the best. The couple who invented Detroit style pizza were Gus and Anna Guerra who used Anna’s family’s “sfincione” dough recipe. So you are spot on. The big difference between Detroit style and Sicilian style is that Detroit is cooked in pans that are more similar to a cast iron skillet vs a cake pan. It causes the edges to Carmelize while the interior stays airy. This is a pizza inspired by Sicilian cooking with a Detroit twist, hopefully you have a chance to sample our cities love letter to your style.

    Im a Michigan native living over seas and I frequently visit the UK especially London. I happened upon this place on accident and funny enough a couple months before had gone to Buddys original Detroit Pizza visiting family. So I had to drag one of my friends in London here to see how legit it is. The fact they imported the blue steel pans already was a win. They didnt have the wisconsin brick cheese but was still top notch and only the sauce is a little spicier than the original. Though its definitely Detroit style. The dough was perfect, the crispy bottoms caramalized cheese edges. My friend in London definitely said was the best hes ever had. Im glad the bus I was on was diverted and that I didnt use the tube that day I passed by this place. Now every time I go to London I can get a piece of home. Thats why London is one if my favourite cities to visit. Its always full of surprises and diverse food options. So I cant reccomended this place enough. This is the first time I have ever seen a pizza crust like this since many years ago, when on a very rare occasion, my Italian grandmother (in NY state) ordered from a restaurant a Sicilian pizza from a very, long-standing restaurant/pizzeria. My grandmother never ate out; she always preferred her own cooking, and rightly so. But this pizza was just as it had been for many decades, and it was really wonderful. She explained that no one still makes the base like this. I makes me happy to see somewhere in Detroit they are still doing it that way. It’s very authentic. The toppings were: a special marinara, lots of fresh, Italian seasoning with an emphasis on the basil, a little of finely grated *authentic* Parmesan, extra virgin olive oil (true olive oil) and anchovies slightly rinsed, dried, chopped and baked on top like one of the seasonings.
    BTW: It’s also good to see that Detroit, even after the impact of the expanding and steeply contracting economy, still has some of the best American restaurants.

    Born and raised in Detroit, it’s a shame more people don’t know about Detroit style pizza! You have to come do an extended episode in Detroit. It’s a melting pot where you will find a plethora of different foods from many different cultures and they’re all so good! Greek, Polish, Mediterranean, Mexican, etc if you want it, you will find it in Detroit! Make sure you try Faygo pop (don’t call it soda!), our microbreweries, and our apple orchards (if in season). It’s a foodie’s paradise 🤤

    As a Chicagoan I can agree that Detroit style needs more love. It’s my favorite. 1) best deep dish in Chicago has some influence in pequods does the burn cheese crust. 2) favorite pizza I had in New York was a Sicilian slice at prince street which Detroit style is a form of Sicilian.

    So so happy that yall are trying food I grew up with…if you ever come to Detroit gotta try the Detroit style pizza from Buddy’s Pizza with their fried vegetables! Olgas, Chicken Shack, any version of Coney Island you see (probably a National’s Coney Island), etc…I actually saw this place when I was visiting London for the first time earlier this year but never got the chance to see if it was comparable to the Detroit pizza back home, glad it did not disappoint 😊

    Detroiter here....so glad you finally got to try the best pizza in the world! Now you have to come to Michigan and do a real food tour. Firstly, do Downtown Detroit's Coney Dogs at Lafayette Coney Island and Slow's Bar BQ...then go north to Frankenmuth for the Chicken and see the world's largest christmas store...you can even be really adventurous by continuing north and try the Ludefisk (we have alot of swedes and finns here) Continue further north to Mackinac Island for the world's best Fudge...maybe stop in Traverse City for the annual cherry festival for the cherry pie...then finish in the Upper Peninsula to hangout with the "Yoopers" and try a real Finnish Pasty and some Lake Superior White Fish...I guarantee you will love the experience....especially if you're here in the fall (October) with the trees changing colors....which also means you HAVE to go to a Michigan Apple Cider Mill for fresh pressed Apple Cider, Doughnuts, and all the other things like Apple Pie, carameled & candied apples, etc.....and finally, try the micro-brews and Vernor's Ginger Ale!!!

      You're not really sending them to Frankenmuth, are you?? That chicken sucked when I was a kid and a friend was there last month and said it STILL sucks. We're talking 60 years of sucking. And Vernors isn't made in Detroit anymore; some of it is made in Holland, MI. It's not as good as it used to be.

    As someone who lives near Philly in New Jersey, I've been saying for some time that we need more Detroit style represented around here. Also, I think it's time for us to address the elephant in the room and admit that America has taken the pizza concept and created it's own...BETTER...pizza. I said what I said.

      You have good pizza where you are. I've yet to have a Jersey tomato pie (alas) but I had Sarcone's and liked it a lot. In fact, I also LOVE the food at the Reading Terminal Market and am a big fan of the Franklin Fountain/Shane Confectionery. too. One of the only things I miss about living in NYC was being able to bop over to Philadelphia on Amtrak.

    The square and corners and crunch - yes, absolutely spot on.... That ton of Parm (or whatever) sprinkled on top, no ... Speaking from Michigan here .

    • @HotVoodooWitch
      @HotVoodooWitch 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      THANK YOU. I don't know where TF the Parm came from but I've never seen it here (also in Michigan). I just got into it with someone else here who swears people put Parm on pizza (true, in NYC), including Detroit-style (not true). That looks like tasty pizza but it doesn't look authentically Detroit to me and I'll bet you anything there's no Wisconsin brick cheese on it, either.

    I was born in Detroit in late 1948. Left in 1963 for Ohio. I had never heard of this style pizza back then, but I did not realize we were poor at the time. Mom & Dad owned our home. We never had pizza or ate out. In Ohio they make that pizza only once in a while. I'll have to try it next time. I'm 75 now.
