I warmed to Hogarth after seeing this! Considering it’s not his song and his Vocals are polar opposite to fish’s this is fun and a totally enjoyable performance 🎭
I actually like H more after this version. It was always supposed to be a fun song and the fun didn't stop when he screwed up. I've seen a few Fish screw-ups with this and other songs after all! Love them both.
I like reading the comments of people bashing Hogarth for his performance on this, but I’d like to see those of you get up on stage and sing this as perfect as you want it. Hogarth does this song justice and turned his mess ups into a fun moment, because that’s all what the song is. I’m sure the fans that night could care less. It’s marillion. Let’s just admire the fact that this band still goes up on stage and goes about their concert with enjoyment.
But THAT'S the whole point if the criticism in the first place! Every established band you can think of has a song somewhere that a new singer just "shouldn't" do, mostly because some songs have such a special place it the heart of fans that any other version is simply considered blasphemy, no matter how good the new singer might be, and should be left alone. Hogarth is a fantastic singer and was a perfect fit for Marillion, I doubt many would dispute that, but in case you never noticed, there are songs from the Fish era even he won't do for one reason or another, and Garden Party really should have been one of them.
I have the RP1000 that Pete is playing. good bit of kit. Great Song, Hogarth can just about hit those notes that fish used to, Fish can't do them anymore and Hogarth does Fish a lot of justice. Sounding great guys!
Why is everyone falling about this late version...??? Be glad this early music from the early 80-ties is still being performed... Btw, Fish is vocally hardly able to perform such early numbers anyway. And also if you want to keep it original, then drummer Ian is out of place here as well. Fyi, the original album recordings were with Mick Pointer on drums & the official videoclip of this hitsingle featured Andy Ward instead of Mick Pointer. Ian Mosley joined Marillion later on in the middle of the recording sessions of the Fugazi-album.
Anyone who understands life on stage can see how admirable it is that H didn't lose his composure AT ALL. Also, there are many videos of him actually making GREAT justice to Fish-era songs. It's true that Fish had more raw grit, but Hogarth is a technically better singer, showman and an impecable professional above all.
I loved the way he messed up a verse but still had the gusto to wade thru it. Rothery has turned into a FB I didn't recognize him at all. Hogarth does look a bit like Jas Coleman though but he's a worthy successor to the mighty Fish.
Same thing for me ....i'm from Montreal saw them the last time for the ''Clutching at straws'' tour ....i'm sure they're still doing great music , but as far as i'm concerned when Fish left he left with the soul of the band ... didn't listen to any of Fish solo work either ...Fish and Marillion were meant to be together ..to have that magic touch
Eins meiner Lieblingslieder von Marillion, doch scheinbar kennt nur Fish den Text. Auch die Champagner Flasche ist zu kompliziert. Ich höre weiterhin lieber das Original - es gibt nur eins....
Fish was better off his writing is just a rip off of Peter Gabriel and he is a raging alcoholic who threw a plant at Steve Rothery because he sucks at guitar. Forget Derek Dick, Hogarth is better and will always be
Made a point of listening to this to see how it came off. It's a sounds good being well recorded but there is a hole that only Fish and his vocals can fill. I presume the songs were written with his vocal style in mind.

I've been playing M for 40 years. Love the band and tried hard to like Hogarth. Never got into the new stuff. Hogarth's voice is too sterile, clinical. You hear it once and it sticks, in a bad way. He has no connection to the early material, that's fine but it looks to me like he absolutely hates singing the old stuff. Its like a rant of vocal masturabtion, misplaced, out of order. A mockery. I'm sad to feel this way as the band was always more than Fish. The music still holds up, it's incredible. Brian Johnson was a good replacement for Bon. Hogarth always a Fish out of Water.
What a poor performance. It doesn't do justice to the original with Fish in any way. It's a shame that a classic has been ruined like this. In any case, I think that a band can no longer be the same band if the composition of the members changes. It's a shame, I would be disappointed if I had paid the entrance for this...
Musically they still was. Great performance of great musicians. But the voice doesn't have the magic of Fish. All songs without Fish are boring. And yes , I've heard a lot of Albums with Steve Hogarth.
@@bocforever6791, fish couldn’t sing like this now and for many years couldn’t ! I prefer them from the early days as well, but Steve H makes a good effect of this old classic.

It's not Fish's music, it's Marillion's... Fish wrote the lyrics and vocal melodies. It's as much Rothery's, Trewavas's and Kelly's song as it's the big man's, so why shouldn't they play it live. It's great to still be able to hear the old songs. And h does a great job with the old stuff. Gives it his own spin while staying faithful to Fish. It's perfect.
