A really beautiful thing for him to do. My father got me into Marillion and Fish when I was a teenager. He still won't hear a word from me about how H is now the lead singer of Marillion, and how it's possible to like the two singers. But I do (sorry, Dad) 😁
As a fan since 1983, I have to say this is one of the best bands in the world at the top of their game. h has a lot of class and regularly pays tribute to Fish, acknowledging his great lyrics and hard work that he did with the band in the early years. There has only been one Marillion, despite the personnel changes.
Seen this band many times, and as a U.S. fan, that is no mean feat. I got on board when FISH was still at the helm, in 1984. Steve Hogarth is a fantastic Singer. Of course he is not FISH, who could be? Steve has been HIMSELF since day 1 in this band, and that alone is worth a round of applause. I love FISH also, and have also seen him any time he's come through these parts as well as buying all his Solo material.
Observad a Steve Hogarth justo al principio de la canción su gesto espectante a sabiendas de que será bien recibida por todo el público. Nunca se librará de ese complejo.
Fish in his prime (MC, CAS, Vigil) was a FEROCIOUS singer. Range, depth, emotion, bite, passion. But the reality is that with Internal Exile his voice began its descent. By the time he got to Suits and Sunsets he no longer possessed the same vocal range and prowess and marillion would have suffered for it. Having H in the band gave them the opportunity to continue to explore infinite musical avenues because H’s range was extraordinary. Another incredibly passionate singer who is second to none as a front man. It was a brilliant choice. So we got two great Marillions with two great singers and two great eras. I’ll take that!
Fish has given up smoking now and he actually surprised himself with how much better his voice sounded 😅 will never be what it used to be but it's nice he's trying his best for the farewell tour 🎉😍
Love the song, Love the energy. Sorry to all of you who can't let go of what is now thirty years(!) in the past, but I really prefer the Fish material sung by H.
The way I see it its M1 and M2 and both are icons in there own right and song writing skills. I listen to both on their own merits and stopped comparing years ago. Just enjoy!!!...
Sorry , I like of Marillion only the Fish era . But this is a great performance of Steve . I think he's unique like Fish is . In the last Time I hear many Songs of the Hogarth era . It's really good. Marillion after 1989 has a new Fan !
I certainly can't hear H slurring or disrespecting the song as some below are suggesting. - please point me to the timings of this or I'm calling it BS. This version fairly races along so there's a lot of words to get out - he manages it. The crowd involvement is perfectly standard for a fan-favourite like this. And his toast was a very classy and humble gesture.
Fish and Hogarth played together back in 1999 - it's on YT - so there is no animosity whatsoever between the two of them. They both rule. And god knows I'm a die hard Fish-era fan. But fuck me senseless, Hogarth is amazing as well, in a different genre. That's what some people won't understand. Different singer, different music. I like both. Stone me.
Kinda sad to see this when it could have been Fish up there instead of slogging away in 300 capacity venues on his own. Kudos to H though for a nice tribute and for being part of the continuing Marillion story.
Balls mate ...he good he made marillion his own ..FISH EVEN SAYS THAT...BUT NEITHER HAS HAD THE SAME FAME .SINCE MISPLACED AN CLUTCHING AT...BOTH HAVE MADE OUTSTANDING ALBUMS SINCE THE SPLIT ...BUT IT WAS NOT THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN ... WAS A SAD TIME AN A LONG WAIT FOR THE TWO NEW ALBUMS AT THE TIME .... JUST MY OPINION MATE...
I can’t find this particular version ANYWHERE! not even on the Brave Live Deluxe. Can someone please help. I’m in the US where my ignorant fellow Americans never bothered to appreciate this band and I need this cut
9L1977 I’ve ripped it , I just really want to buy it if they put it out to support the band and have a hard copy if something ever happens but thank you
I just know that this version is taken from Friday night of the Marillion Weekend Recorded in March 2013 at in Centre Parcs, The Netherlands. I don't know any audio CD with these Friday night extras ( HOOKS IN YOU COVER MY EYES & SLAINTE MHATH ) As far as I know, they are available only on DVD and Blu-ray. There is a double CD version of this Weekend but without these three extras from Friday.
I saw them at one of the weekends in Montreal where they did Jgsaw, but H didn't sing, it was audience sung and they ended it short, just after the guitar solo.
That's a belting version of a Classic Song.Mr Rotheray you did not drop even an 8th of a beat there. The only problem Marillion ever suffered from (and I hasten to add, through no fault of their own.)WAS LACK OF T.V. AND RADIO AIR TIME people were normally so vibed up they went to see them live and completely forgot to vote in the radio poles etc, leaving the flood gates open to far ...less talented performers .Aforementioned shysters often repleat with major label contracts ,better Kit than Small businesses (and thats what Marillion are ...dont let the Anglo Scots jocularity fool you they count every Pound Note even if they pretend not too)and dubious "Cultish" attitudes.Viva Vivare...Long Live Marillion.🕊🍓🎱
it seems like the usual motives, but alas, the fedot is not the same, only with Fish this composition acquires those painfully native sounds for which you say this is the Marillion group
Тридцать лет ныть за Фишем - особый вид мазохизма его фанатов. Пора бы уже смириться, что это давно уже другая группа, с новым лучшим голосом, с новым звучанием. Хогарт идеально подходит группе, поэтому так долго работают вместе.
Nope. He turns a song about the anger, resentment and disillusionment of the working class into a ridiculous pantomime about being drunk. A horrible version.
Pure genius...falling about the stage, slurring his words, getting the audience to sing half the song and proposing a toast...walks a fine line between affectionate tribute and taking the piss. Was Rothery shaking his head a few times?
I guess you haven't been to the weekends, because if you had you'd know it was an affectionate tribute and no-one is taking the piss. They are celebrating ALL of Marillion's music here.
@@GeeVanderplas You're right, I was one of the many who gave up on Marillion after Fish left. Let's face it, Season's End is not a terrible album but it was a huge disappointment after the masterpiece that is Clutching at Straws. Then someone tied me to a chair and made me listen to Brave - I now have a growing appreciation for Hogarth and his work with the band. Now gigs are happening again, I might make the effort.
Having seen the great man perform this live in Haddington a couple of weeks ago, when it grew wings and became an anthem for Scottish Independence, this version just doesn't cut the mustard.

The bass line of Pete is awesome 😍 Wonderfull band pleasing my life since the early 80's 😍❤
I think the Fish and H differences are behind them and they have a lot of respect for each other as fellow professionals

It's called class, a trait that's sadly rapidly vanishing from our societies. Marillion still has it, thank heavens.

Class
un grand groupe de rock
Marillion - Slainte Mhath - Lyric
A hand held over a candle in angst-fuelled bravado
A carbon trail scores a moist stretched palm
Trapped in the indecision of another fine menu
And you sit there and ask me to tell you the story so far
This is the story so far
Shuffling your memories dealing your doodles in margins
You scrawl out your poems across a beermat or two
And when you declare the point of grave creation
They turn round and ask you to tell them the story so far
This is the story so far
And you listen with a tear in your eye
To their hopes and betrayals and your only reply
Is slàinte mhath
Princes in exile raising the standard Drambuie
Parading their anecdotes tired from old campaigns
Holding their own last orders commanding attention
We sit here and listen to all of the story so far
This is the story so far
Take it away
Take it away
Take it away
Take me away
Take me away
Take me away
Take me away
Take me away
From the dream on the barbed wire at Flanders and Bilston Glen
From a Clydeside that rusts from the tears of its broken men
From the realisation that all we've been left behind
Is to stand like our fathers before us in the firing line
Waiting on the whistle to blow
We stand here waiting on the whistle to blow
They promised us miracles, and the whistle still blows
Broken promises but the whistle still blows
Waiting on the whistle to blow
We stand here waiting on the whistle to blow.

Awesome track, good job Steve H👍. Fish is obviously the original & the best, really liked the toast, gr8 tribute!!!
Nice touch by S.H
Have to agree, Fish in his prime was on another level but Steve Hogarth has more than stepped up to that level, particularly as the year have past.
