    You're right :), few years back I got hold of a surprisingly excellent sounding little pre-amp, a Technics SU- C01. This thing is small but sounds wonderful and has gold plated connectors as well. Got it for only 8,50 pounds :)

    I'm going to try this trick with a NAD 3240PE I found. The pre-amp section of my AU-317 is a bit unstable. Tone defeat not working or only on one channel. Bass from right speaker much weaker half the time. It needs work, but all the people refurbishing vintage gear seem to have quit because work just became too much in Covid times.. Hope to see you back soon Kelvin!

    It's amazing how few TH-cam instructional videos actually turn the equipment around to actually show the actual "how to connect" visuals - and, as such, this video helps to fill a void not properly addressed by the many other misleading [instructional??] videos - which are mainly vanity videos without any actual information. Although I have vintage McIntosh equipment [C 28 Pre-amplifier (1973)/MC 7270 amplifier (late 1980s)] I find this video still to be informative. I guess that all of the videos of the MC 7270 avoid showing the actual cable hookups as the real intent is to visually brag about the appearance and the sound. While OK, wouldn't it be nice to provide the occasional instructional hookup video that actually addresses what the title header is stating. Again - thanks for this video. In addition to "picture-is-worth-a thousand-words video examples, connections, we need serious advice on the proper grounding of high-powered vintage amplifiers [mine is 270 watts-per-channel] and best grounding practices for high-end equipment plugged into pre-amplifiers [ground all devices into the one pre-amplifier ground? [some videos appear to have the owner literally dancing around his amplifier to the music - - hardly the instructional video the header [title] would imply. Again - thanks to "Stereo review X."

    I own a Sansui 2000X which is my favourite vintage amp. I recently bought a Sansui AU 317 in a clearance sale but was disappointed v the older amp. It’s been sitting on the shelf unused. However thanks to this tip though and the combination sound even better than the 2000X. I knew you could do this but had no idea it would deliver this sort of improvement.
    I’d be interested to hear your views on how the Sansui Eight Deluxe compares to the 2000X?

    • @stereoreviewx
      @stereoreviewx  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jon Stannah hi Jon i’m glad you got a good result combining those two now regarding the eight compare to the 2000 X The truth is I’m in the world of guesswork clearly the eight goes for more money and I think the eighth is younger.
      I’d be very surprised if the 2000 sounds better than the eight particularly in the power amp department.
      That’s my best guess anyway.
      Cheers K

    Turn table signal isn't just very small it also has very little bass (because bass frequencies would otherwise make the tracks super wide and you'd fit less music on a single or lose resolution in the higher frequencies) so you the phono pre-amp also reverses this to get the original flat signal of the recording.

    THE MAIN REASON THEY MADE THOSE THAT WAY IS SO YOU CAN HOOK UP 2 OR 3 MAIN AMPS. BY PUTTING A Y ADAPTER ON PRE OUT AND HOOK UP 2 AMPS OR MORE. Or If YOU NEEDED MORE INPUTS YOU CAN HOOL UP 2 PRE AMPS INTO ONE AMP.

    Which volume control do you adjust? I know a lot of dedicated power amps don't even have a volume control, which leads me to believe that you would only use the volume control on the preamp, but maybe with your setup you would do things differently? Leave the pre at 100% and only adjust the sansui volume? Some "sweet spot"?

    • @stereoreviewx

    • @D1N02
      @D1N02 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You need a volume controlled line out, or it won't work (or your dedicated power amp has to have a volume control). Watch out some amps seem to have these loops but they are marked adapter or processor or something. Those are not pre-amp outputs but for adding an equalizer to the system. All sound will cut out if you put the pre-amp in direct mode.

    conversely, it is better to connect a vintage integrated amplifier as a power amp with a new preamp

      Hi Khalid, could you explain what you mean? Were you reacting to Tim Wynn explaining just before you about the safest way to turn the system on first?

    IMPEDANCE MATCHING... Not one genius here mentioned it. Would highly recommended people spend another 10 minutes googling before plugging random pres into power amps.
    I really like kelvin's videos, but like most audio reviewers, almost 0 technical knowledge.
