A big shout out to the great announcer Charlie O’Donnell, who did more episodes of this show than anyone, from 1975-1980 and again from 1989-2010, when he passed away.
I always grew up with the Pat Sajak era of this show. I never saw Chuck Woolery host this version. Well, that was before my time. I was born in 78. But as a kid, I did watch love connection with Chuck Woolery. That game show is one of my favorites.
@ I had no idea that Chuck Woolery passed away yesterday. We are really losing great people this year. The only game show host we have alive right now is Bob Eubanks, and Pat Sajak who is still alive who retired.
The second puzzle ("Chitty Chitty Bang Bang") was also the name of the theme song heard in the Shopper's Bazaar pilot, which later evolved to Wheel of Fortune we know and love today.
I wish they kept the shopping format. It was cool to see what prizes were available and what people bought. Back then people appreciated stuff for the home. Now days if it's not cash, a car, or a trip people have no interest.
Rest In Peace, Chuck! I think this is the only Wheel episode of his that I've seen. I remembered GSN showing one when Merv Griffin passed away. (I wonder how many younger people today don't know that Pat Sajak wasn't the original host?)
I remember this version of the show, as a kid, where the winners would shop the showcases and try to spend all the money they'd just won in the previous round. And look at all those prizes...and we're told all of them total about $31,000...now 1 car would be more than that.
Nearly all of Chuck’s episodes are believed to have been destroyed by NBC and/or Merv Griffin. This is one of the only episodes believed to still be in existence.
When it came to hosting WoF, Pat may have had the longevity but Chuck had the charisma... in bunches! I hope Ryan, Vanna & company pay tribute to Chuck, even though he got fired from WoF, undeservingly so imho, the man put his heart and soul hosting Wheel and every other show he did. RIP Mr. Woolery 💔🙏🕊️😥
He was the original host of Wheel of Fortune (1975-1981), the original incarnation of Love Connection (1983-1994), Scrabble (1984-1990, and during a brief revival in 1993), Greed on Fox from 1999 to 2000, and Lingo on Game Show Network from 2002 to 2007
I never knew wheel fortune was around in the 70’s and had a different host. That’s how young I am but I agree though he has more excitement and personality.
You bet he was. The job fit Woolery like a glove. Griffin made a huge mistake replacing him in the first place and hiring the bland Sajak in the second place.
RIP, Chuck! It's odd seeing "Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang" as a puzzle here, as that movie's theme song was the original tune for this game at the time of its first pilot. Chuck hosted it, but it was first called SHOPPER'S BAZAAR.
Shame Chuck allowed his ego to get the better of him in 1981, and that Merv Griffin was unwilling to pay him what he requested; given how highly rated “Wheel“ was at that time, why wouldn’t he have honored Chuck’s request? If neither of those things had happened, I bet Chuck would have also been named host of the syndicated version that started in 1983.
From what I read, Chuck wanted a raise, Merv was able to give him one with support from NBC, merv had some bitter dispute with NBC that led the show to CBS briefly, and I think within all that mess, Chuck didn’t come back.
There is an episode of Wheel of Fortune from 1977 that features Arte Johnson from Laugh In cohosting with Chuck Woolery (as a substitute for Susan Stafford), but unfortunately this episode has never resurfaced on TH-cam.
Poor Gerry, he was told there were only vowels left. He should of realized hearing that the last word couldn't be "vampire". Plus I'll bet he's a baseball fan.
So if Chuck Woolery was still hosting this show today, would that mean Pat Sajak would be hosting Scrabble, Love Connection, Greed and Lingo later on? Or better yet, would Bob Goen takeover after the show moved from NBC to CBS?
Who knows Pat probably would try his hand at hosting a Late Night show again that was his dream job. Chuck was such a better host i did wish he hosted the show longer

Always great to see an episode with Chick and Susan. I just never cared for Pat Sajak. He’s boring to me. Just my opinion. Thanks for sharing this with us ❤
Pat Sajak is retiring from the show after some 41 years or more with it, but to me Chuck Woolery was a vastly superior host for this type of show. He is an extravert, and this show requires one. Sajak is an introvert, and he never seemed comfortable in the job. Woolery was also very easy on the eyes when he was young, while Sajak was just average in looks.
