Oh Chuck. You deserved better but ya had to argue with Merv! (But then that gave us Pat Sajak for 41 years and it worked out for Chuck with Scrabble, Greed and Lingo.) I love his speaking voice.
Alex Trebek backed Chuck on that in his autobiography saying Merv often got cheap with hosts. He mentioned when he was first offered Jeopardy he thought the pay was too low, he offered to be the executive producer as well (which he did for the first 3 years) and the pay for both jobs was still less than his last gig.
@@marcpower4167 besides Battlestars, one of the last gigs in the three years before Jeopardy! was Pitfall, and he's known not to be paid for his services there.
I'd rather watch reruns of Chuck hosting love connection than almost anything. He's right that it was much more interesting to find out what the couple's thought of each other, especially those couples were the date didn't go well. That's what hooked me on the show I had never seen it and was flipping channels waiting for a show and just stop there to kill time and the couple that came on, wow did they not like each other. I never missed another episode after that
Singer, musician, writer, and television presenter Chuck Woolery died November 23, 2024. He was first a member of ‘60s pseudo-psychedelic group The Avante-Garde with co-writer Elkin ‘Bubba’ Fowler. Their first single "Yellow Beads” failed to chart, followed by their only top 40 hit, “Naturally Stoned" (BB #40) from 1968. Their 3rd single “Fly With Me!" also stiffed before they disbanded without ever releasing an album. Woolery later issued several mid- and lower-charting country single before hosting game shows like Wheel Of Fortune before being replaced by Pat Sajak over a salary dispute. He hosted several other game shows, including Love Connection and Scrabble. After hosting Lingo on The Game Show Network, he was the subject of their first reality show in 2003, Chuck Woolery: Naturally Stoned. The program featured the Avant-Garde's biggest hit as its title theme. Woolery was 83 when he passed quietly at his Texas home.
Lingo's original version was taped in Canada in 1987 and ran 26 weeks. The show aired on a few stations in the US. I don't think Scrabble was the number one game show in daytime, though it did pretty well against Price is Right for its first three years.
USELESS TRIVIA if you're interested: Scrabble replaced other failing NBC game shows that tried to compete with CBS' Price is Right between 10 AM and noon depending on where you lived. These included Blockbusters with Bill Cullen from 1980-81, Wink Martindale's Las Vegas Gambit from 1981-82, Alex Trebek's Battlestars and Peter Tomarken's Hit Man from 1982-83 and Dream House with Bob Eubanks from 1983-84. Fun fact: David Letterman openly mocked Las Vegas Gambit when his 10 AM NBC Morning show was cancelled I'm 1980. Scrabble premiered in July 1984 and then settled in to the 11:30 AM slot against the second half of Price is Right on CBS through Summer 1987 Chuck was thinking about Scrabble's switch to a 12:30 PM Eastern timeslot in the Fall of 1987 (9:30 AM in Los Angeles). Prior to that switch, The Young and the Restless and Wordplay with Tom Kennedy had been on NBC after your local noon newscast. Yeah, Scrabble probably did pretty good in both timeslots. In 1990 when Scrabble moved to a 10 AM space on NBC's schedule for its final few months, the soap opera "Generations" went to 12:30 PM and barely lasted a year.
Chuck is one of the best game show hosts of all time he host some game shows like wheel of fortune love connection scrabble greed the series lingo and more the list goes on and on his career spend more than a decade
16:54 IMO, Goodson may have not wanted Chuck on his shows after him comparing himself to Richard Dawson's pay at "Feud" which led to why Chuck left Wheel.
I never watched Wheel after Chuck and Susan left. As far as his influencers- I loved Bill Cullen, he was one of my faves! But I easily liked Chuck more than Jonathan Winters, Carson and Dean Martin.
Chuck actually wanted parity with Richard Dawson, the host of Family Feud. Dawson was earning $2,000,000 per year and according to Chuck, parity in the marketplace around 1982 was $500,000. Chuck was earning $65,000 per year and wanted $500,000 per year. Merv countered with $400,000 and NBC offered to make up the $100,000 difference. But when Merv threatened to channel hop Wheel to CBS, NBC withdrew the offer and Chuck left.
Susan it was solely for personal reasons. She left show business entirely, she joined the peace corps and did missionary work. Merv tried to convince to say on telling her the show was going into syndication the next year and it would make her a huge star but I guess she felt it wasn't her calling.
Two Million Dollars was only attained once, on Super Greed in 2000 between the remaning team of three. Dan Avila went for the Two Millon by himself in 1999 and did not win. $1.98 Beauty Show taped at NBC Burbank, as was Gong Show for most of its 70s run, CHuck W. did do Gong but IIRC didn't no $1.98
I can recall an episode of " Greed" college week, when a " Wheel Of Fortune " question came up and the college boy mentioned after Chuck said he once hosted (Wheel) when the college boy glorified Pat ( Sajak) I wondered as disrespectful ( obnoxious) that the producers let the show go on without stopping tape. But Chuck got even in talking about the ability to remove a wrong answer, but stated this freebie will allow you to remove one contestant ( in reference to the college boy) I'm really surprised that the producers didn't stop tape to either talk or remove that contestant. The college boy actually stated that when Chuck mentioned that he hosted Wheel the college boy said it was before he was born. He really insulted Chuck.
I do recall the one where there was a $25,000 Question asking which of these shows was not hosted by Chuck Woolery: Scrabble, Love Connection, Singled Out or Wheel of Fortune. The contestant got cocky saying he's followed Chuck's career and said Wheel. The captain agreed. WRONG! Chuck was jokingly mocking them for missing "his" question.

In all actuality both Chuck and Susan ( Stafford) both left over a money issue. Funny he talked about that before, but not here.
Susan left because she wanted to pursue other interests.
