i honestly thought this song had hit #1. it was EVERYWHERE in 1979. i hear it an i'm immediately on roller skates at the roller rink. timeless classic.
It is crazy they never hit number 1. ELO is one of my top five groups that I can listen to all day every day. Not a bad song on their albums. ELO, The Beatles, the Carpenters, BeeGees and Journey. Thinking about it I guess I would add ABBA and Home Free but I am trying to keep it short! And then there are solo artists! Thank goodness there is so much wonderful music out there for us to enjoy!
I CAN'T believe ELO didn't have a #1 record! I've loved their music for decades and this one and "Telephone Line" are 2 of my favorites! Thanks, SalvoG!
I remember ELO kind of being on the "fringe" of music when I was a kid. I liked it and a few of my friends did too. But there were a lot of people that thought it was just noise.
I must tell you, when I listen to other reactors listening to my favourite songs, I always search to see if you have reacted to the songs. I like the bit if research you do...plus when you enjoy something YOU ENJOY IT and it's obvious 🥰🥰
Jeff Lynne & ELO are top tier, so many fantastic tunes. Jeff has worked with a virtual “who’s who” in the music industry; from his collaboration with the Beatles to his time in “The Traveling Wilburys”. Guy is an amazing in his arrangements & as a producer.
The staggering amount of great music bursting on the radio and in stores meant that even the great great ELO couldn't get to number 1 yet today they'd strong in to the top of the charts with 'a little' competition and laugh that in it's face. Enjoy your reactions.
One of my favorites by them, also recommend Turn to Stone, Sweet Talking Woman and Strange Magic (actually you can't go wrong with any of their songs...)
Being named “Bruce”, this song has been tied to my life… especially, when it was first released. At the time, I was a teenager. Needless to say, it got played A LOT and added to my ❤of ELO.
He wasn't singing 'Bruce' though lol! It was 'groos'. Jeff has said he needed a word there and couldn't think of one. Most people thought he was singing 'Bruce' though haha!
Thanks, Salvo - ELO is always amazing.. genius of Jeff Lynne - even though this is not one of my favorites, it's still fantastic... appreciate your listen...
You gotta look at the songs it was competing with at the time. I haven’t looked, but I’m guessing the top 3 were huge! It was out at the same time as “My Sharona” which absolutely destroyed the charts.
You need to have a look at their most recent album "from out of nowhere" My favorite songs off it, are "from out of nowhere", "time of our lives" and down came the rain
Because this album was released during the height of disco, the inference of the Discovery album title was "Disco-very." Sal, I would REALLY like to hear your reaction to ELO's "Believe Me Now/Steppin' Out" from their "Out of the Blue" album. Songs like this we commonly called "album tracks" in those days, meaning phenomenal songs that weren't released as singles.
Always love your reaction for something completely different try ticket to the moon great song or secret messages four little diamonds the list is endless thank you ❤❤❤
“Pop” is nothing to look down at. Jeff has proudly stated many times that he loves writing “pop songs.” If you want to something fun to listen to, try the long version of “Rollover Beethoven.” It from their rougher beginnings, was a minor hit in 1972, and is their live performance signature encore song. Jeff also played it as a Chuck Berry tribute (he wrote the song) during ELO’s Rock Hall Of Fame induction.
I like it when one of your videos throws me right back to my childhood. I'd suggest 'Can't Get It Out of My Head'. It's completely different from this.
This song was huge when I was a kid. Loved it! And... Since you mentioned Rock and Roll is King, you need to react. I've suggested it several times and you won't be disappointed.
Twilight, Secret Messages, I’m Alive… all great songs from the 80s when they were a little less popular and these weren’t huge hits, but a few of my personal favorites
Face The Music and New World Record are neat album titles too! El Dorado is the one I think you specifically would like. It's very unique. Including that, there are several of their albums put out in a short period of time that are all amazing. They never did filler. Everything was amazing. Oh, and Jeff Lynne is and was a musical genius. That's a very widely held opinion. Not just mine. :)
Ahh, GREAT choice for ELO. Driving beat, intense lyrics. For something also catchy but more inspirational, I would recommend their song "Hold On Tight To Your Dreams." You might also like "Rock and Roll Is King."
Its not live. Its daubed over. Love this band and the more you play their music. The more you get into them. They have sooo many good songs. Check out old and wise.
Written on the basis of 4 Notes. Great conversion to music that gets the dance floor shakin'.. 7:20 The true Lyric was for a bad word.. A#S..not GLASS.
At the time, there was LOTS of great music. So much. And ELO, with the string section, was an acquired taste. One that I acquired the very first time I heard them!
A “deep dive” would be the album “Time” (1981)… but the WHOLE album as one listen. It’s a concept album beginning to end, and there was at least a couple singles off it, notably “Hold On Tight.” According to Wikipedia, this album has gained new life as a “retrofuturist” icon, with time-travel being the key subject. To belabor the point, this was “ahead of its time,” a little different than most ELO offerings, but a standout for certain. Check it out! PS: I use the intro to “Here Is The News” as my ringtone, which drives the family crazy.
Definitely agree that this should have been a US number 1 song, but when you consider when it was reaching it's peak it was competing with The Knack's 'My Sharona' which was the biggest song of the year, Chic's 'Good times' and Earth Wind & Fire's 'After the love has gone', you have to appreciate it did pretty good
Great song! Good dance song! I'm with you, surprised that was the only top or #1 song of their's. Mr. Blue sky is so cool. Do Mid evil women from them.
I think I know why they never had a #1 hit. This was the '70s. A ton of great music was made concurrently. It's hard to compete in such a crowded field. As many have said, there were no clunkers from them. But when you are going up against the likes of Chicago, ABBA, The BeeGees, Boston, and too many others I can't think of at this moment.
If you want to hear a few 'Closet Classics" by ELO give "Fire On High' or "Do Yea" a listen...Two of my favorites that got lesser air play than their bigger hits.
I do love ELO, but my most favorite group of Symphonic Rock is The Alan Parsons Project. You really should listen to them. Try the song GAMES PEOPLE PLAY.
Jeff was a masterful musical genius, besides ELO & The Traveling Wilburys, he worked with George Harrison during his solo sessions, in the 80's my favorite was "When We Was Fab".
Please check out their "Hold On Tight (to your dreams", if you haven't. That was my personal introduction to ELO. I mean, I had heard their earlier stuff, but I didn't associate that stuff with a specific band, you know?
ELO holds the record for having the most Billboard Hot 100 Top 40 hits (20) without a number one. I preferred the strings-based ELO to this newer/dance-fied version, though this song couldn't be any more catchy.
El único número 1 que tuvo ELO fue Xanadú en Inglaterra. Pero no es necesario tener 1s para hacer excelente música o ser eternos. Friend More ELO "All Over The World" (13 Charts US) "Shine Little love" (8 Charts US) thanks!!
The first time I heard this song was in the late 90s, when I was still a child from the movie Donnie Brasco, then I was very struck by this song, which had been on the playlist for a long time. SalvoG also recommend listening to the songs “Confusion” th-cam.com/video/1jUvhJ_Tgzw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=M42rCMiM3vEZX0CS and “Shine a Little Love” from ELO’s work th-cam.com/video/GJuTIxwQw0k/w-d-xo.htmlsi=m9a5Zl4ZnbbmCbzr

you won't regret it!!
@@MrSandstorm1960 I like the Barry Manilow original more but I'm sure he'd like either one
You need to do a CCR reaction you’ll love them!!!!
This song was king in the skating rinks 1979-1984.
Oh wow I can definitely see that
I put on a lot of miles on those wheels at the roller rinks.
Same!! Loved it then and now!! Glad you liked it!!
Was such a fun time. I had Blue suede skates with pompoms lmao
Oh my word I forgot about the Pom poms!! I had them too!!
Can't say enough good things about ELO. Lyrics, melodies, catchy "hooks" for days. Unbelievable talent. Jeff Lynne's a genius.
Evil Woman, Living Thing, Turn to Stone are 3 great ones from them Salvo.
He's heard Livin' Thing but looking forward to the other 2 eventually. 😉
ELO was not just a pop rock band. They were iconic.
They ARE iconic (He)
The guy on the album cover wearing the turban is Brad Garrett, Robert Barone from "Everybody loves Raymond" it was one of his first jobs.
Oh wow, I never knew that! I love him. He's my favorite character in that show.
i honestly thought this song had hit #1. it was EVERYWHERE in 1979. i hear it an i'm immediately on roller skates at the roller rink. timeless classic.
I think it may have to do with that they were ahead of their time, very unusual for the time.
It is crazy they never hit number 1. ELO is one of my top five groups that I can listen to all day every day. Not a bad song on their albums. ELO, The Beatles, the Carpenters, BeeGees and Journey. ELO Out of the Blue was the 3rd album I ever bought. Great stuff from beginning to end.
Xanadu and hold on tight hit number 1
I CAN'T believe ELO didn't have a #1 record! I've loved their music for decades and this one and "Telephone Line" are 2 of my favorites! Thanks, SalvoG!
Me too! They are BOTH my favourites! Fantastic group!
I remember ELO kind of being on the "fringe" of music when I was a kid. I liked it and a few of my friends did too. But there were a lot of people that thought it was just noise.
Mr Bluesky
They did; "Xanadu" with the late, great Olivia Newton-John

This song made me fall in love with Rock n Roll at the ripe old age of TEN
One of my favorites by them, also recommend Turn to Stone, Sweet Talking Woman and Strange Magic (actually you can't go wrong with any of their songs...)
There were so many good bands and music in the 70's ot was hard to break no.1
This band holds a big place in my heart as it was mine and my nans favourite band so when I hear an elo song I have to sing for my nan ❤
This song was a regular on the radio in the late 80s and all the way through the 80s. It's a regular on classic rock stations.
ELO were hit a hit machine in 70s Telephone Line ( Great Break Up Song ) their cover of Roll Over Beethoven is something to hear and must do songs.
This is what we all need...an uplifting song to remind us that life can be great.
Top five bands all time of all time in my opinion ! Next...Shine a Little Love , music video.

Their Time album is excellent.
Love this album - & I play their greatest hits album often. So easy to listen to, I was born in ‘64 so I’ve grown up with their music ❤
It's truly a headbanger.
Saw them in Lexington, Ky in the 70’s…one of my all time favorite bands❤❤❤
One of my fav ELO songs!!. It's my phone ring!!
Don't Bring Me Down, Turn To Stone and Hold On Tight were their last big hits.
OMG............ Memories of my late teens..... sneaking into "disco's"..... and having an absolute blast 🎉😊
I think Jeff maybe an immortal alien, with all the UFO images and the fact that he looks the same from about 30 to 70 years of age.
JEFF LYNNE has aged very well for sure!
You can't go wrong with ELO. Always liked them from my youth onwards [I'm 62].
Edit: I never knew why their songs didn't go higher in the charts?
Loooove this group. ❤😊
You gotta look at the songs it was competing with at the time. I haven’t looked, but I’m guessing the top 3 were huge! It was out at the same time as “My Sharona” which absolutely destroyed the charts.
This song just brings me back to playing GTA Vite City, the Flash FM radio station just full of bangers!!
ELO had one of the coolest stage shows!!!
In my opinion ELO are one of the best bands on the planet. Each spring I keep playing Mr Blue Skies
Yup ELO had its glory. Very interesting to me as a youth
You need to have a look at their most recent album "from out of nowhere"
My favorite songs off it, are "from out of nowhere", "time of our lives" and down came the rain
They did the hands-down greatest cover of Chuck Berry's ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN - and in '73 only went to 42 in US? (just looked it up).
I also can't believe they didn't have a number 1 hit!! Listening to this and telephone line takes me back, so many memories!!❤😊
Hello Salvo, how are you?
I used to sit and stare at that cover. Oh wait, still do. 🕺🏼🕺🏼😜
"Showdown" is my favorite of theirs you haven't heard, you'll love it.
