  • After three years of construction, a Chinese-built toll road has opened on the island country of Jamaica. The project marks the biggest Chinese investment in the Caribbean to date and officials said there's more to come. CCTV America's Roee Ruttenberg reports from the Kingston, Jamaica.

Not all countries have the capability of developing to a point where they can be 100% independent / sustainable usually due to a harsh climate, lack of arable lands, and to a lesser extent, lack of education. Jamaica is one among many countries, such as most countries in Africa, that are behind on a macro scale. Although Africa is full of natural resources like gold, stones do not mean much to them because they are facing lower level issues such as stable access to food and water

China does not just help Africa; its investment is worldwide. Instead of questioning why China invest in Africa, why not ask how come being such a long time ruled by western countries but without contributing anything to this land? If people said Jamaica just got bought by China, its still better than been sold by the western. We should be happy for those countries that are improving and growing, not showing the arrogance and being jealous for others' success. Over the next 50 years (the length of the lease), the toll collected belongs to them. It is expected that over that time, they would have recouped their money, plus profits. It's simple, arm yourself with knowledge.

So sad you all can't see through the smoke and mirrors. I'm pray for my Jamaican ppl and hope that one day they can lift themselves up unite and progress without outside help. You have to understand Business and Political Business Partnerships. These projects come at cost to the Country in question. China has its own bank called the China Development Bank and Export-Import Bank of China. They offer underdeveloped Countries low interest or virtual zero interest loans for a piece of the Countries Pie. Generally speaking, these countries couldn't apply to a Bank via normal means to build infrastructure, as they're considered high risk lenders/investments for the lender. The same is being done to Africa, having built Africa's fastest Rail Service that runs from Capital of Kenya, Nairobi to Mombasa, for 3.2Bil, taking four and a half hours. It's faster that the fastest train in America which travels the same distance of 300 miles from Philadelphia to Boston. Please do your research before you praise, nothing good will come of China's investment in these Nations. It's never without cost to Countries that are already crippled and in some cases corrupt.

+Pass_the_M as I mentioned, I was on the highway in JA recently and I noticed when paying, that creditcards ( debit, yes! ) were not accepted.
Highly irregular if one is to be in control of one's expenses...
Also an incovenience. I need not go any further on that subject. Of course the tolls will eventually be regulated, however from past experience I have not seen reductions, rather the opposite. Increase in the cost of ( living for example... ) most things which depend on supply and demand.
I just hope the JA government have not shot themselves in the other foot with this positive however costly project.
The Chinese know how to make serious money...much to the detriment of those who give them the benefit of taking full conntrol.

After 50 years, Jamaica as we know it today will be a subculture of a fantasy island China will own.

Why are Chinese suddenly building cities in congo and high ways in Jamaica, why are they investing in the black countries. Not saying its bad, I just don't get the change of tune.

***** Compete with USA? USA does not own shit really? Apart from themselves in the most part.
UK owns - well - the queen owns over half the countries in the world. She is still queen of those countries right from colonial days, when UK made USA.
So compete how, what has USA got land wise? It would make more sense saying they are competing with white people, because if you talk race, then race wise white people own most the world. Despite being only 1/10 of the population in the world.
Have you an explanation or theory behind your thinking? Perhaps you can enlighten me as to why?

***** And you seem to not know either, or are just talking shit. I asked you to explain you reasoning, and you cannot do it. I already explained my reasoning for not understanding where you are coming from with your comment.
Why bother commenting? Waste of time! As far as I know, USA don't own, majority lands.

***** My picture is in black and white SKETCH, and was a social experiment actually. But don't let that interfere with your outlandish assessment.
And don't let the fact I am near ending a BSc in Science stop your assessment either!!!!!!
Please crawl back to the bitter rock you came from... all hype for no reason!

You have to think outside of sovereign nations. The bankers who own the world are not restricted to political or geographical countries. Brazil,Russia, India, China and the U.S.A, Britain, France etc. are all owned by the same people.

What do you mean sorry, I want to understand your view. And maybe research a little about this Chinese economical move. I know Queen of UK still has common wealth in Jamaica, So really they are simple investing in a colonized country.
Think outside how, as in Chinese are trying to get toes in on the colonialism that went on in the past,

When China built its first batch of highways, lots of local officials were worried about there was no sufficient cars in China then to use them, and the toll would put private drivers off. But see what happens now? Some newly built highway in China are still used by a few. But as other highways before them, traffic would fill up as the area developes, and people will start complaining the highway is not enough. Infrastructural investment requires vision, which many people are lacking.

Jamaica should not give away land because we don't know the price of land in fifty years. Second, land beside the highway will be crucial to business for easier acses
And cheap advertisement. This advantage the Jamaica should reserve for we self

At what price to our culture and sovereignty? Damn, blasted shame. Many Afrikan nations are selling out too. It's not worth it. I hope I'm proven incorrect, but I seriously doubt it.

Unlike USA here where I live in Virginia, an about 1/2 mile started more than 2 years ago just to expand and add one line on either sides, indeed CHINA won't play with time.
