    Script:
Having recently completed both the world’s most extensive system of expressways and the planet’s longest high speed rail network, China is now looking beyond its borders for opportunities to keep building. President Xi Jinping announced at a recent summit that Beijing has sealed megaproject deals with 65 countries throughout Eurasia and Africa to construct ports, power stations, rail lines, roads, and all the tunnels and bridges needed to connect them back to mainland China.
At a total cost of over $1 trillion, the One Belt, One Road initiative is unprecedented in size and scope. So is the bold funding mechanism: China will use its large, state-run banks to provide most of the financing, a risky move, when you consider how few of the nations in the O.B.O.R. could afford something like this on their own. “Oh,” say the leaders of economically-challenged, underdeveloped Laos, Yemen, or Ethiopia - or the blood-soaked regime of Bashar al-Assad in war-ravaged Syria - “you want to loan us billions of dollars to build some cool stuff in our countries? Of course, why not!?”
China is hard-selling the project as a way to boost its westward connections, an update of the silk road trade route that played a significant role in developing China and the rest of the region 1,000 years ago. But many analysts see this comparison as little more than a marketing pitch.
Al Jazeera clip: “Is the real point of this, East-West service then simply to boost China’s westward connections?
[Pauline Loong] “Well I wouldn’t say simply to boost China’s westward connections, but I totally agree with Charles that it’s more a PR stunt. To call it the “Silk Road,” that’s really brilliant-evocative of romantic camel travels in the past. When, you know, you have these lovely silks and trade and so forth. And it’s good, because look at all the headlines it has been getting, but in practical terms, it’s early days yet.”
[Bryce] Aside from the lessons China learned from its own recent infrastructure boom, Beijing is also drawing inspiration from the American Marshall Plan which financed the rebuilding of Western Europe after it was decimated during the second world war. That program was worth the equivalent of $130 billion in today’s dollars and ensured the US had reliable export markets for the manufactured goods and machinery its growing economy had become dependent on producing.
China’s modern version - first announced in 2013 - is the signature initiative of President Xi Jinping. Several projects have already been completed. Earlier this year London became the 15th European city connected directly to China through an ever-expanding global rail system, meaning freight trains loaded with goods can now arrive after a 12,000km journey all the way from the east coast of the landmass.
And, at a cost of $4 billion, China also just completed Africa’s first transnational electric railway, which runs 466 miles from Djibouti to Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. Chinese companies designed the system, built the line, and supplied the train cars...

I m glad you realize how China is helping the less privileged countries. Besides your country China is also helping many other countries where no one willing to loan a single cent to them and yet China is pouring in billions to develop their country.
Reason why so many countries complaining is because they are jealous of China gaining strength day by day

Not gonna lie, this video does sound very biased, in the end China is building infrastructures for 60+ countries while we are currently bombing 7+ countries, the past 2 decades has proven China wants to trade while our first instinct is always war, it really doesn't matter how you spin it from a political angle, just simply ask all the common people that are living in those 60+ countries: do you guys want highways and trains? I think their answers would surprise nobody.

      Correction guy,
      Delusions?
Infrastructure often pays for itself many times over through trade. Cities often develop around these areas as well. This helps both countries. If the host country does not do anything, od course they would have more problems. Many countries are already showing benefits from China's construction and is already well documented.
Everyone is influenced by each other. And that can be thru trade technology or other things. We all try to get what is best for us. This benefits both country with China footing a good chunk of the cost and engineering.

Do you realize China brought 800 million people out of poverty? And this is according to western media!
According to the World Bank, more than 500 million people were lifted out of extreme poverty as China's poverty rate fell from 88 percent in 1981 to 6.5 percent in 2012.
The country's poverty rate dropped from 10.2 per cent in 2012 to 3.1 per cent in 2017.
Now tell me, what is the poverty rate in the US?

I think you are missing the point. In the last 30 years China has been able to lift about 500 million people out of poverty. They are now consumers. The Belt and Road initiative will continue this trend, on top of that potentially 100s of millions of more people all across Asia, Eastern Europe, even Africa and South America. This can be such a boost to the world economy. Think about Central Asia and the Middle East, if a person is doing better financially, they are lot longer tempted to strap an explosive belt around their chest and blow themselves (and others) up. I am convinced the Belt and Road will lead to better prosperity and more peace in the world. A real win -win for everybody.

I am sure you have never criticized Sisi for what he did at Rabaa Square, thats almost an identical crisis but very less coverage because its against the interest of Nationalist americans. I am sure you would not criticize Abu Gharib Jail or the mass killing and genocide of north koreans during Korean war Where US General said we just wanted to kill as many people as possible with the bombing. People who have zero respect for human rights should not educate other how to deal their countries. I'm Chinese. I can tell you for a fact that china is not encouraging citizens to put there hard earned saving in the immature stock market via the work of propaganda. This guy has no idea what he's talking about. Besides, if OBOR is a huge mistake, that's a mistake that china will swallow. What left behind are infrastructures in parts of the world that Americans can't even pronounce. If it's a successful investment, China will be benefited. But isn't this the nature of taking risk and rewarding risk? This guy makes it sound like only the West is qualified to invest. Whatever the investments the West make is high quality and is good for the people as well as the environment. I bet he will find ways to justify the exiting of the Paris accord too. It's a wolf in sheep's clothing. This project would force the world to be dependent on China for key supply chains. On top of that, majority of the nations involved can't afford this, forcing them to concede their debt to China, granting China ownership of assets in these regions. China wants to be the heart of the world and the implications that go a long with that are in no one's interests.

Agree with many, there is such a negative spin on everything. The FACT that CHINA, a single nation dared to do OBOR and convinced 65 countries is already AMAZING!! China aims to connect, not destroy or isolate or insulate... the world should applaud, support and not suspect, doubt and wish it to fail. What did Western superpowers do for the world? create bully coalitions armed to the teeth to pulpurise or rob or enslave 3rd world countries with puny militaries. So since US is not very successful in the last 20 years with helping the poor, when not let China at least try for once. Rage? No I only responded your question, no the US has no real interest in Africa. The interest is all directed in the Middle East, and the talks are in premature state because IS as you know is still in Iraq and Middle East. If you want a specific answer the countries they share interest are
      Turkey
      Iraq
      Afghanistan
      Jordan
      Israel
      Saudi Arabia
      Egypt
Mostly in Israel to keep the Palestine conflict at bay(basically Muslims threaten Jewish state and only 2 states Egypt and Jordan recognized them as a sovereignty)
Saudi Arabia it has a deep commitment to deter Iran and it wants to make a Arabic NATO and sees the kingdom as a country it can rely on.
Turkey it is a NATO ally, unfortunately Obama screwed us and we had to use the Kurds to combat the IS jihadis. It's very complicated but Turkey hates all KURDS, now the US likes some. (Get my drift? conflicting ties)
Iraq and Afghanistan are both countries that harbor jihadi IS and the taliban yeah the shadow government that rued most of the Middle East. (Taliban is labeled terrorist because.... read what's going on in Afghanistan the people there don't want them back in power)
Also NATO technically isn't going away until 2020( by then hopefully the future is brighter and those two countries can officially grow and develop into like rich countries)
That's all (Jordan is just an ally for some reason dating back to the Cold War.

The intention of OBOR is to develop these countries, when they have better infrastructure and better economy, china can do business with them. It is a long-term strategy and it is win-win. Chinese say teach him fishing instead of give him fish, build roads or power plants is some kind of teaching fishing, it helps local industry and economy, with this local government has the ability to improve people's living standard.

It is true that in the short run, an increase in trading and commerce will benefit the wealthy and elite more, but in the long run, supply and demand will spread out the benefit to the poorer class as well. China is long term sighted, and focuses more on bringing out the hidden potential (natural resource) of the less developed countries. We should be glad that they focus on this rather than military and war in another country (If you get my reference).

I think they are just trying to keep spending high so they're economy can grow as fast as possible and avoid a slowdown for the time being. Because when there is a slowdown it'll show the Chinese people that the CCP can't offer them increasing quality of life

    • @user-kb1zm6en7e
      @user-kb1zm6en7e 7 ปีที่แล้ว +82

I don't know if i can go through the entire video. Generally speaking, lots of bias, lots of inaccurate assumptions, lots of inaccurate implied prepositions and indirect conclusions, lack of proper / deep understanding of the situation, and lack of understanding in general of economics and foreign affairs.
At 1:00 He is implying China is bad for giving loans to dictators. In fact, if you did your research more deeply, you would know that, China is not just giving loans, China is engaging in free trade with these countries. China has done more to help poor people and poor countries lift themselves out of poverty for 30 years than the US has done in 100 years. The only way you can help a poor country get rich is not by imposing tariffs and sanctions on them, and isolating them until they become democracy, and then giving them aid which goes only to benefit their dictatorship. The only way to help them is by opening up your market for them to trade with you, by engaging in free trade.
First comes the middle class, then comes civil rights and democracy. UK did not become rich after it became democratic, it became rich first, and then it became democratic. America did not became democratic before it became rich. South Korea was one of the poorest nations on Earth with very little human rights, it first became rich through a dictatorship regime, and only after that, people started demanding more rights.
When you're hungry, democracy is the last thing on your mind. The only way to help poor people lift themselves out of poverty is by trading with them.
China has done so much for Africa i can't even describe it. Massive ports, highways, trade roads, infrastructure all connecting these countries to the rest of the world and making it possible for them to trade. China has completely opened up their market for them and told them - come sell whatever you have. China has the largest African population in Asia, close to a million Africans. Students, business people, workers. Selling in China or buying in China and selling back to Africa. China is giving massive amount of visas to Africans, including student visas and encouraging them to come to China to study. They are also building schools and universities in Africa. China is the best thing that could've happen to Africa and the Middle East.
He is saying the Silk Road is favoring the elite because they are lacking clean water and schools. First of all, they are building schools, and second of all, how can you have clean water and basic stuff when you don't even have roads? Have no infrastructure to connect cities and people, no pipelines, no nothing. Infrastructure comes first, trade come first, then come everything else. Nothing benefits poor people more than free and open trade without conditions, nothing benefit the elite more than regulated trade with conditions.
He made lots of inaccurate statements and conclusions about the Chinese economy. China's economy is million times better at the moment than America. The debt he is talking about is not external, and only one sector is being inflated, not the entire economy.
He is saying the Silk Road is a scheme in order for China to buy time to prop up their economy. The Silk Road is something like a giant version of the Marshall Plan, the US had an enormous surplus after the ww2, and needed foreign markets to keep investing all that money, so they invested in Europe (western bloc cold war), China is doing the same only on a massive scale. They need more foreign markets to export and invest in, they have massive surplus and need to invest that money somewhere. That is a good thing for the foreign markets, not a bad thing.
By investing in Africa, building massive ports and trade roads, the people in Africa get richer, the plan is to open and develop as many foreign markets as they can. The next manufacturing hub will probably be Ethiopia.
There is a lot i can tell about the Chinese economy, and what they are trying to do, ultimately it is a good thing for everyone, these countries are isolated from the maritime trade roads and cannot compete, cannot trade, cannot export, or import, by building massive ports, infrastructure, roads and trade roads, China is connecting these countries with the world.
China is currently trying to privatize their state owned companies in order to switch to a domestic / consumption driven economy, and not rely on exports, as they do that switch, the low cost manufacturing will be moving outside the country.
He could make the same video about the US 70 years ago, and it would've been more accurate, when it comes to China, they have different culture, they are not interfering with others, nor seek world dominance.
He also interviews people with skin in the game, with institutions related to the Pentagon and State Department, rather than interviewing independent experts with more in-depth knowledge.

Exactly, Matthew! Analysis that forces people to confront uncomfortable truths must be "biased" & "fake." It's far easier to identify when an argument is being made than to actually engage it.
Just to make the point, there are plenty of news outlets that present all this information...What I try to do - and have always done - is analyze and contextualize things for people through my POV, which has absorbed many stories and other points of view. Unfortunately, most people haven't been exposed to the type of intellectual environment where ideas are freely expressed before, and don't know how to react to it when they first experience it.
I believe this explains the backlash to Obama and the small, but hardcore number of Americans that support Trump. It's this sense of discomfort/insecurity when confronted with an intellectual argument.
      That's my take at least...

The US is investing TRILLIONS of $ in "invisible" planes and wars, and when China tries to do good and build infrastructure for few hundred BILLIONS that won't be used just for China transportation of goods, but employ people, connect people and develop countries. Good infrastructure is the basic of any economic growth, and when people are getting good salaries they are not thinking about nationalism , radicalism and war...
If only the US invested money spent on Afghanistan, Iraq and Libyan war in developing Muslim countries they would have better response than today, when almost whole world hates American hegemony directed by Zionist AIPAC that wants continuous war in the Middle East!
And China is thinking ahead, not waiting to collapse, but open new markets, and this guy is talking about bubbles and debt, when the US owes 20 TRILLION $, 1/3 of the whole world debt and is on the brink of economic collapse is just pathetic...

I don't see it that way, in my eyes what China does might possibly be not much better than what the US does, they just hide the negative side better.
First, China is giving out loans to these poor countries to create this infrastructure. These loans will eventually have to be payed back, so China already gets its money back eventually. Secondly chinese companies will be the major partners in these infrastructure networks, the taxes on the profits will probably be payed in China, so China is already making gains. Thirdly if these poor countries don't need the infrastructure, it's unlikely that it will make them richer/make their economy grow due to these works. Basically this infrastructure is mostly to connect China to the west and the poor countries are just along the way.
      Pro's for China:
      1. Loans should eventually be payed back
      2. Chinese companies make more profit and grow => chinese economy grows
      3. China gets (better) land connections to other countries (especially the west/europe)
      4. Increasing its influence
      Con's for China:
      1. Risking that the loans will not be payed back
Pro's for the poor host country:
      1. Chance that this infrastructure will boost their economy
      Con's:
      1. They have to pay for this infrastructure
      2. The investment money leaves the country (instead of investing in it's own local companies)
      3. Chance that the infrastructure works will not boost their economy (for it not being necessary) and the investment is just a waste
      4. Chance that people might get dissatisfied that the money isn't being invested in other more essential things (education, health care, jobs, ...)
Ofcourse it's something different if China is investing/giving the money and is never going to need it back. But this is not the case so far I know.

An interesting video that demonstrates a typical western way of decription. They can always hide their bias behind with full mouth of seemed to be objective analysis, but, if you look carefully, you will see how their bottoms control their way of thinking.
In ancient times, we say the officers "官", which vividly shows that they have two mouth. TWO MOUTH!!! They can always depict the events with a seemingly objective and lawful way, but leading to the entirely different results:
it's just where their bottom is sitted.
Be ware of the propaganda. Think twice if someone tells you they have the truth!

Let asians not have rivalry with one another, but complement in trade and developments. It was the white westerners who in the previous centuries invade n ruled Asia with the agenda of weakening it, then plunder its resources. How much did the british do for India. Many far out areas are without clean drinking water, and infrastructures are few and far between. And the westerners sold Opium to China to weaken its people. So EVIL ! KARMA, now many western cities are full of drug abusers.

You're missing a very important point to these "risky" loans. They have clauses that give them claims to the infrastructure that they financed if countries fail to pay.
For example, Sri Lanka wasn't able to pay the load for the Chinese deep sea port, So it pays the debt by allowing China to "own" the port under a century long lease.

i don't really know about economy but, when you say funding infrastructure that enhance commerce and trade will only benefit the wealthy, i'm confused. doesn't investing in commerce and trade improve the life quality of the people since it offer job which help reduce the gap of income disparity? with so much more middle income family will improve the economy since they provide new market for businesses. yes it will favor the wealthy and business elites class, but investing in basic structure are just short term solution since it offer little improvement to the economy?

Make no mistake, this is empire building. Pax China. There was Pax Roma, Pax Americana, then Pax China. But Pax nevertheless, commerce under an empire. That usually a good thing. And boy are they open for business.

Providing infrastructure for commerce and trade _leads to_ infrastructure for water and health! Teach a man to fish FFS! The west needs to abandon its ridiculously short sighted strategy of perpetually propping up impoverished countries without investing in their *economy* so they can feed them selves.
There isn't a finite amount of money going around in the world. It is made by labor and production and we can help these countries realize comparable prosperity to our own.
Moreover, to criticize China for investing in countries that can't _currently_ pay them back is ridiculous! Investing in African rail will grow GDP and allow them to pay back the debt! It's exactly what our governments do when they build our infrastructure and it is absolutely effective!

    • @fredhal8681
      @fredhal8681 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

Exactly... it's debt is similar to Japan's and USA's and it's the reason why it's grown so much economically. Debt is "good". But having said that, it's debt is tiny compared to both Japan and USA not on nominal terms but when considering the potential of the country that is still untapped and the size of its population. If Chinese productivity per capita were to even come close to that of Japan's and USA's, it would be an economy bigger than half the developed world combined. That would likely happen within the 21st century if it is able to keep away from military conflicts. This is why so many good minds are so bullish about China. Whether or not it can avoid war and false flag baits set by certain groups is another question. We see Russia was dismantled pretty convincingly, PRC could be too.

    • @bighands69

If the Chinese economy grows at 7% average over the next 30 years it will have a GDP of $64,000 and if the US economy were to only grow at 2% it would have a GDP per capita of about $103,000 in 30 years time.
For China to catch up in 30 years time it would need to have GDP growth of about about near to 9%.
And the US would need to stay at 2% growth for the next 30 years for China to catch up. That 64000 that china will have at 7% growth will be about $22000 in today's money.
My calculations are all basic and rough and not some exact model using calculus to measure and display growth cycles.

Why don't you report on the actual investment projects and infrastructure plans so that you can inform instead of instruct your audience. We all know the US is terrified by OBOR and how it will decrease dependence on the west and increase mutual benefit in Eurasia and Africa. OBOR is a threat to US uni-polar world hegemony, and may in time also threaten the USD as the reserve currency. There has been a growing anti-China sentiment from the major western news sources for some time due to this, do you really think it's wise to follow along with this propaganda?

You are talking about clean water, affordable housing, education etc... Those are very important. But you dont have a clue how the economy works. If you see a homeless guy and you want to help him, would you rather give him $1000 or give him a job?
Building infrastructure is the most important key to a local economy . That's why the ports and the inland cities with better infrastructure always have better economy.
As a Chinese and business person lives in the States ,I have seen more things than most of Chinese and American. I can tell you China is simply helping others countries especially African countries and of course ourselves . We were a poor country like most of African countries long time ago, but they supported our country while most of the developed countries were against us, we will never forget the friendship African countries offer.
We Chinese have learned to love instead of hate, learn to give instead of take , we have embraced all good and bad to make the world a better place .
