@@adampetten1009 - Basic service like oil changes are straightforward and can be DiY. Not sure I will tackle the desmo valve service so that will be expensive every 18,000 miles. Air filter after 9,000 was still serviceable so though a pain to access under normal riding conditions I think it is less exposed. Not the easiest bike to service and Ducati not helpful in that regard. Other bikes most likely have a lower cost of ownership but I knew that going in.

@paulvanhout9695 do you ride much dirt, that's amazing to get 9000 miles... my truck barely gets 9000 miles. My wife rides a Honda 500 and maintenance is fast and easy. My street bike is just a clip and few screws(cb1000r) , I'm torn on the KTM 890r or playing it safe with another Honda

    • @paulvanhout9695

@@adampetten1009 - Probably 3,000 miles of that off-road in moderate to minimal dusty conditions. More off-road mile or dust and the interval would go up I am sure. That said you might be able to avoid a mid-trip cleaning and only have to service for pre or post trip. I think the job gets easier after you do it a few times but certainly not a straightforward task. Currently on a short trip down the coast with a few “adventure” sections thrown in - bike still impresses me with its versatility and capability. Air filter be damned!

I bought one last summer. I totally agree with the comparison to the tenere 700. The ergonomics and feel of the two bikes is very similar. Except for the top-heavyness of the tenere. In sweden the 24 tiger 900 RP is more expensive than the 24 desert x.

The DesertX devours B roads, country roads, and green lanes. And when I need to get out or home more quickly, motorways are definitely still fun too. I’ve never had an issue with buffeting but maybe also it’s my positioning on the seat (closer than most to the bars). It does get a bit slippy in the mud, but that’s the Scorpion STRs not the bike. These tyres are otherwise great in all other conditions.

I really, really wanted one but ended up with a 900 Rally Pro. Serviceability on the road was my key concern. There is no shop manual, the airbox is difficult to access, and the 160 Nm wheel nut needs to be more off-road friendly. Great review, thanks!

As a T7 owner, I watched all the reviews I coulfd find and bought a DX yesterday. I dont really like it. Maybe I'm too used to the T7, but it just doesnt gel with me. The fueling is not great, especially off throttle, the wind buffering is horrible, lots of heat coming out between my legs at traffic lights and the engine is quite vibey at highway speeds. But it is fast. Very very fast.
I'll sell it and keep the T7.

But, the better of the two, is the bike, that if I were only allowed one bike for the rest of my life, would be the one. I’ve ridden a lot of bikes, from most manufacturers, but the desert X is nothing short of brilliant.

I have pretty well owned them all (ADV Bikes) this DX is the closest thing to a perfect motorcycle that I have owned. I find it more comfortable than the R1250GS, initially the GS is a plush seat but gets brutally uncomfortable after a couple hours. I find the DX seat is harder initially but once it breaks in it is more comfortable than that GS seat on the long haul. I did add a Tractive suspension so it is off the charts now. I do also own an 890 Rally which is a close 2nd.

  • @AJSpinDrift

The Desert X is loads of fun to ride and puts a real smile on your face, but it's definitely not as comfortable or practical for long days as the Tiger 900 RP. I'm yet to try the newly updated Tiger to see if the extra power and geometry updates bring the on road fun more in line with the Desert X's spritely character.

They ride nice. No better than my old 890 AdvR but anyone who does dusty miles wants to know: Q: how easy is the air filter change?

@@paarthd2 Same here. From a dirt perspective it is better. However it’s still not as good as a dirt bike. None of them can be as they are all compromised. I grew up with dirt bikes, have a couple today, raced them as a junior, before switching my craft to the road. Raced in several classes and ended up in Australian Superbikes. At 50 years old the Triumph just feels a bit more substantial without being too big like the 1200. Still also have a couple of track bikes as well. At 189 cm, 92 kgs it fits a little better for me and can still take on the off rod side if I choose. Getting to and from it’s just more comfortable than the Ducati.

I fell in love with new Tenere from first few meters of riding it when it came out. Ending up buying it right after. Didn't had that with any other bike for a long time. When trying DX last year it had excactly the same experience, it's just felt right immediatelly, fit like a glove, and it does felt a bit like T7 but with those extra bits that I had sometimes missed (more power, quality suspension, more advanced tech on board).
The only issue for me now is the height - was not an issue at ull untill recently when I started to ride with pillion as otherwise - and because of that new AT seem to be really tempting. The other issue is existence of V4 - with is bloody fantastic, just so damn expensive. Sure, different enough to serve different purpose... but still.
I guess the answer might be the new AT AS - utilitarian bit more like DX, comfy bit more like V4, with super low seat inspiring more confidence when riding with pillion... and even the pricetag lands somewhere in between...

  • @martyn_g
    @martyn_g 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Perfection would indicate that it has no flaws. Well, for its intended purpose it has two. One, air filter is under the tank, so, ironically if you’re in a “desert” environment and you need to pull it out to clean it, it’s an hour job to do it. Two, rear nut - tensioning the rear chain, or to put an emergency tube in because you’ve staked the tyre takes a whopping 185nm of force. That’s a LONG spanner (or at least a one you can dismantle) to bring with you. So, nope, not perfect.

I enjoyed a test ride with a full Termigioni exhaust system BUT I found the screen to be useless and caused a lot of head buffeting, the large front wheel disappointing for road use and as I'm 177cm tall it was just too high off the ground - hopeless for any work around traffic lights and the city ... shame because I was smiling most of the time.

265 miles on the tiger! I own 900 RP and it's good for 200 miles. I think if I was a little more frugal with the throttle and maybe on a motorway at a constant relaxed speed it might do 220/30.

I have test driven one. A fantastic motorcycle. Well balanced and easy to drive. But the price and any accessories, well then the price will be high and accessories are needed. The service cost is in the high price range. But you can drive 16,000 km between them. If you compare it with a Tenere 700, you can service the Tenere 3 times for the cost of one Dessert X and still have a few pennies left.

That’s the Insta360 chest mount - it’s decent although you can adjust the angle so need to tighten the nut on the back to stop it getting knocked off angle. Otherwise it’s excellent and tbf being able to turn it means you can shoot both landscape and portrait without an adapter 👍

@@motobob it's good to hear some honest review about this bike. It's cool to hear the minor flaws #Ducati need to improve in their next year's Desert X. Like the unavailable heated grips & quite smaller Windscreen which you have pinpointed. Although some people also complain about the Weight of the bike which is a bit too much, it's low front Fender on the non Rally base model & the chosen stock Tires which could have been at least closer quality to Scorpion Pirelli all terrain tires. If all of those would be corrected. This bike would be amazing. Especially if you replace the exhaust with an aftermarket one.
I guess the height of the bike is just enough because it's used after all into different terrain especially in rough roads. For some who can't able to reach the floor with their two feet. It's fine I think they could just adjust height into their preference. There are also some taller guys who wants this bike so it makes it even. Anyway, opting for shorter is way difficult as it makes their leg cramp in a long ride.
On a side note why is this bike's red bar frame is bulging at the tail end. It really upset the looks which isn't normal to an adventure bike or it's rivals. Yes, it helps a bit when you need to yank the bike, but the Factory can able to put it on the side or maybe not. It doesn't matter anyway.

Of course, the bike looks great, but they made a "Rally" version that’s actually heavier than the original. How is that "rally"? Also, they did it because the original had a structural flaw they had to eliminate without destroying the reputation of the brand. They’re trying to replicate what they did with the Scrambler. An average bike that they milked to the bone through marketing. We should see if they succeed 😅

What happens to be this "structural flaw" you talk of ? In case I ever go insane and end up buying one to survive my mid-life crisis. LMAO.

@@GIGABACHI I’m sorry but I can’t tell you anything more. I can only say this much - if you plan to ride it hard offroad, the basic pre-upgrade version is not the best idea. It is perfectly good on the pavement though.

£3000 more than the BMW F900GSA with Ride Pro inc. And dealers harder on the ground when on the road, reliability issues and cooked nuts for free. My money is safe with BMW

What reliability issues? I’ve had a BMW and now a Ducati, and I’m not a brand fundamentalist. But the BMW and now de Ducati MTS with 30k kms, I didn’t have any kind of issue. But I agree with you that she is overpriced and the dealer network is not the best. Also the X is way more beautiful than the F900… but anyway choose what makes you happy

Just dont seem right to have such a heavy bike with so much power riding on knobbies. It sounds absolute pants. Expensive toy for Westerners.

890/901 are MUCH nimbler handling bikes.

But sadly those are the side effects of sticking to the V-Twin engine architecture.😞👎

@@GIGABACHI desert x has a full degree more of rake angle than a 990r on paper. there is nothing you can do to change that angle: i can increase the rake of a more aggressive bike like the tiger 900 by just manipulating the suspension. not the case with the desert x.
forgot to add, the feedback on the 890 is not as vague as on the desert x.
