Choosing a bike is choosing the bike that put the biggest smile in your face, the one you like to look and wish to ride. This bike put a smile in my face evertime i jump on it. I love owning this bike, i love how it looks and hiw it rides and people take picture of it. When i ride it i smile as you were smiling during this review. This tells everthing.
Exactly. People go on a spec sheet, but bikes have been too good since the 70s or 80s. Ride what you love. There are barely any dogs out there, just different flavors.
I fully agree with this comment. I own a 2023 KTM 890 Adventure (S) and now also own the F900 GS Enduro. At first I was unsure of which bike would stick around, but the GS makes me way more excited to ride both on and off-road. Is the 890 way easier to ride and more forgiving? Yes. ..but that's not what matters. At the end of the day, 890 doesn't make me feel the same way the GS does, which is why I'm keeping the GS.
the phenomenon of "post-purchase rationalization" or "cognitive dissonance reduction." this concept is rooted in psychology. When people buy luxury or overpriced items, they may feel discomfort or guilt over spending a lot of money, especially if they are aware the purchase may not have been entirely necessary. To alleviate this discomfort, they rationalize the purchase by focusing on emotional justifications like "it made me happy" or "it puts a smile on my face." This type of rationalization helps them align their emotions and thoughts, so they don't feel as if they've made a poor decision. Rather than admitting the item may not have tangible benefits proportional to the price, they focus on the emotional boost or self-gratification it provides. Essentially, it serves as a defense mechanism to cope with any lingering negative feelings related to the purchase.
Hey Ian, I’ve been riding for many years, and did it professionally for a bunch of it. I’ve watched MANY TH-cam motorcycle reviews and yours, are up there at the top. You cover stuff that others simply gloss over or miss all together. “It’s all in the details” Very well done mate.
I was able to choose between any of the top level middleweights. After about 2 months of watching endless TH-cam videos I picked the Ducati Desert X, I have just over 1000km's (600mls) of total bliss, no regrets yet !
Same here. Only had my DDX Rally for a few weeks but no regrets. Granted, I didn’t have the opportunity to actually ride all the competition, but honestly, there are a ton of amazing choices out there. It’s hard to go wrong.
I bought a Tiger 900 GT Pro two months ago, for 95% street use and I absolutely love it. The engine paired with all of that nice equipment is phenomenal. One of the best bikes on sale right now. The BMW is too offroad-focused for me. Nice review!
For my riding interests, Moto Guzzi Stelvio or Triumph Tiger 900 GT Pro. I'm in my 60's and my offroad riding is basically gravel roads or any terrain where the chance of the bike laying on its side is mighty slim.
Whatever floats your boat. I’m more than happy with my T7 12,000km of trouble free riding and most likely several hundred thousand more to come. The 900 is definitely the pick of the bmw’s for my sort of riding.
The drone shots are pretty great. I appreciate you adding that in. If I had to buy an adventure bike in the 15-20k range, I'd have the 900 GS. It's a BMW... And I want a BMW. I think that matters. Even if it's not the absolute best, it's competitive enough in the segment to let me make an emotional decision without regret.
"Competitive enough to make an emotional decision" is exactly what a bike needs to be, I think. As long as it does that much I think the buyer will be happy
It's a Chinese loncin bike with the headlight of the Indian tvs 310... It's only BMW in the badge.. What an expensive joke and you're willing to pay over 15k for this... A real BMW in this category is long gone and that would be the old R850GS with the oil cooled boxer engine, drive shaft and truly made in Germany...
@@nickzourb190 I'll be sure to let BMW know that what the customer truly demands is a bike using decades old technology for $20-25k. None of this globalized economy crap, a bike made in Germany by Germans using German materials. I'm sure that'll go over well... They'll sell bucket loads.
If I had 15-20k to buy an ADV, i would buy a Tuareg and spend the 2-7k that I have left on a nice holiday with my wife ;) If the Tuareg didn't exist, my next choices would be: 900GS over Tiger 900 Rally over 890 Adventure
As a 650 owner, V-Strom 1050DE. Tried it last weekend, it's so compliant and feels so good to ride that i am literally in love. Engine is 10/10, suspensions are super good, quickshifter is very fast with very low effort to change gears. The way it rides is absolutely fantastic, it enter corners without a single push, it stays in middle curve like a train and it exits them like a jet. I feel like it's so rewarding to ride that i wouldn't want anything changed. Also, the 800DE has a very good pull and a more relaxed chassis, good for offroad. Suzukis as always puts a big smile on my face.
I have been watching your videos for about 6 months now. For 2024, I am going with the Honda Africa Twin base model, non-DCT. Like you said, great updates for 2024 with the tubeless tires, adjustable windscreen, and 5.5 gallon fuel tank. I plan to do about 70% street and 30% dirt. Additionally, i am going to get a 2024 CF450 Motto MT (Ibex)....plan on riding 60% dirt and 40% on road with this one....that being said, i can't wait to see your videos and reviews on both of these models. I looked hard at the BMW F900 in all black but your video helped me decide to get the Africa Twin instead. The windbuffeting, fuel range, and luggage options caused me to shy away from the BMW. More than that, however, had to do with the exceptionally poor customer service at my BMW dealership in Colorado Springs. I actually submitted an online purchase order request for the BMW F900 on two occasions and that dealerships failed to contact me both times.
I was a GS fan. I went to test drive the Triumph 1200 Rally Pro after I saw your review. I loved it and bought one last year. I do ride it to my work and do solo offroad short trips on days off. Really like your reviews on ADV. Especially the drop test. No one ever pays any attention to it and I believe it is super important. Love from Townsville.
I've got a Moto Guzzi V85 TT Adventure. Mostly on-road and some two track. It's decent enough for plugging along dirt roads, and great on the highway. The 23L tank gives me lots of range. Shaft drive and cruise control are nice. The valves are easy to access, and air cooled means less to go wrong. The air filter is under the under-seat tray, and isn't that bad to access. I love this thing. If I were to do any sort of serious off-roading, it would be something much smaller and lighter, 350 EXC or some such.
I have just bought a mid sized ADV to replace my Honda CRF300 and Triumph Scrambler 1200XE as I'm riding off road 50% of the time here in the UK now and the Triumph was to expensive and nice to take off road although it's more than capable but I'm not still very much a newbie riding off road. I had three mid sized ADV's in mind on my short list, Aprilia Tuareg 660, BMW F900 GS Enduro spec and the new YamahaTenere Extreme. Just for context I'm 6' 2" and around 17st so not the smallest bloke. The 660 was way to small although a great bike and should be test ridden if you are going off road, the F900 GS is very nice and rides well but once I specified with the off road extras I need it was over £16k here in the UK so my money has gone on the Yamaha Tenere Extreme which I should have in June. The other element that put me off the F900 GS is the engine is a Chinese supplied and built engine which is not acceptable at that top price point.
A thoroughly comprehensive report and I always enjoy the hard earned experience you garnish it with. I have the Africa Twin, the first of the throttle by wire and just had a major service at 80,000km and still the valves settings were the same the day it came off the production line. I've had minor problems like needing to replace front fork seals. I've had an Acropovic exhuast from day one and can't see me selling the AT on the horizon just yet. Love it.
I’m currently waiting delivery of a 2024 standard Africa Twin manual. For me, it’s the reliability, seemingly lower cost of ownership/maintenance that mostly contributed to the decision.
Easy. 2024 Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro. Best adventure bike on the market with true pedigree and character plus all the tech and usability for on and off road as you need. 💪🤙💥
I was wishing I hadn't already bought my tuareg when this bike was announced, but in reality, the only thing I really don't like about the tuareg is that it's not attractive and the f900gs fits the design style I like.
Thanks for your reviews! Your channel is one of my most watched MC review channels out there. Would really love to see you do a review of the new F900 GSA! I just traded my F850GS for a F900 GSA and I am very happy with my choice. I know the old F850 GS and GSA did not elicit a lot of excitement from you and other reviewers. I traded predominantly for the weather protection of the GSA. I do freelance for our local BMW dealer. SO I ride all BMW models on an almost daily basis. I did a thorough review fro myself whether I wanted a 1250/1300 vs the F GS/GSA and after over a thousand miles on each I always prefer the F GS/GSA. It is a more approachable platform, has plenty of power. Sure the R bikes have more, but unless I'd travel loaded to the limit two up or in very high altitudes it is inconsequential. The F GS/GSA being about $10k less than an R GS/GSA is also a notable point. Plus the transmissions on the F bikes is light years better than the R series. Anyway, would be cool if you can review one of those new F900 GSA sometime.
Voge 900 DSX is exactly the same bike - they say its is toned downed version, but it's not. It has the same engine, same frame, same sus, and same electronics. Its a same bike for 30% less price.
I was looking at the f900gs and the desert x rally. You hit two points that are significant. First is the starbucks button, i love my vanilla lattes. Second is the air filter. Its such a chore on the ducati vs the f900gs. Thanks for putting this together for the adv community. Amazing review as usual.
this is the video I have been waiting. I got my f 900 gs 2 months ago, from the first batch in my country(Turkey). I got the enduro pro package one which is the fullest here with the suspensions and cruise control, keyless etc. I just passed 2000kms on that beast and I still can't say I ride this bike comfortably. I'm ~170cm tall and 100+kg heavy (yes I'm fat :) Unfortunately I couldn't get the low seat option because of the stock problems here, so I got it trimmed some where here and my previous bike was ktm 390 adv so I'm kinda used to tall bikes. The problem is not the height, it's the weight and the price of it. It's so heavy to ride in traffic and in city. And it's so expensive to have kind of a reckless mindset in offroad event I got the original engine guards. To be honest I like going offroad but I use the bike daily for commuting and getting around in a big city (I live in Istanbul). So I'm mainly onroad. I gotta say I bought this bike because of the brand , performance and the looks. It's just gorgeous, the passion package. So now I'm seriously considering look back into Triumph Tiger Rally Pro or Aprilla Tuareg 660. Because I see that I need a bike with proper removable luggage options, kinda light and also offroad capable. cheers ✌
I just tried the 390 Adv, 450 Himalayan, Vstrom 650, CFMoto 450MT, Versus 300X and just because it was there... a Vstrom 250. And what the hell, I had the most fun on the little 250! It's tall, but super light and narrow, perfect for on-road commutes. I did not think I would like that more than the 450 MT. So I feel you, heavy tall bikes are great, until you have to commute on them as a modest heighted person that I am too.
The long term reliability and service costs to me are very important especially with something designed to go off-road. The last thing I want is to be in the middle of nowhere with a snapped camshaft(ktm) and why I avoid what might be great bikes to ride but bad and expensive to own and maintain. It's hard to judge on an almost completely new bike but BMW's do seem to have a good reputation compared to some of the competition. That air cleaner is so well thought out and implemented, other companies could definitely learn from this
Dealer service and cost are very important to me, however I am on my second KTM and no regrets at all, even if it fails one day. All these years of great memories riding it are worth it. By all means I don’t want it to leave me stranded, nobody does, but I also don’t want to waste my life on boring bikes. And by the way, before my first KTM - a 1090R - I had a F800GS, and that one gave me more issues, well the 1090R ownership was actually flawless, not a single issue ever.
Ian, amazing review as always and like the drone footage. My choice would be Aprilia Tuareg 660, thanks for helping me make my final decision. All the best Ian
KTM 890 Adv R ... NO doubts about it! best performance suspension, best performance motor, best performance weight distribution and crash protection from scratch without adding silly crash bars. the 900GS looks quite vulnerable to me and suspension not worth the money.
I have the 790 Adventure, and it is a phenomenal bike off-road, and I’m perfectly happy to tour on it too. I just can’t see replacing it…but yes, those camshafts are a major problem…
Excellent review on the F 900 GS Ian! Your cinematography and presentation skills have taken a big step up over the past while with an end result of stunning visual effects and a thorough professional presentation. One can tell you are enjoying your full time gig. 🙂 I am a returning rider and have spent the last year honing my off road skills on a Honda CRF 300L with an eye towards more BMW training and an eventual move towards a twin cylinder adventure bike. Your reviews are having a positive influence on narrowing my choices. Thank You! I have a feeling I will end up with a T7 with the main contenders a close second Africa Twin Base, F 900 GS and and the Transalp a distant 4th. I find the 300L so fun off road I may just keep it and tweak ergonomics and suspension over time while making a budget friendly move on the ADV bike. Your objective reviews are ALWAYS appreciated! Cheers!
Hello Ian, i have been seeing you i think from the beginning, all i can say is 1. the BMW is right now probably the best adventure bike on the market, even if it comes INCOMPLETE... lol... and 2... YOU HAVE IMPROVED A LOT on your off road riding, the sand riding is amazing, i love to see it, and i think i will never ride sand as confortably as you do.
Great review Ian. I struggle (literally) with the weight of these bikes which are all pretty similar. The fuel range is poor for an “adventure bike”, doubtless in the quest to keep “wet” weight down. I’m riding a KTM 690 Enduro on the TAT and DBR. So far we are on day 5, around 185 miles per day and increasing the off-road proportion. 18 days to go and a 4,200 mile total distance. It’s “adventurised” with a Nomad tower, Rade Garage range extender, a Seat Concepts seat, Kineo tubeless wheels plus a lot of other bits and pieces. My point: it’s light, first and foremost. It’s excellent on the road with 50:50 tyres. Off-road it’s very competent and capable. My fuel economy is incredible. Initially over 66 mpg with 50% off-road still over 62 mpg (US gallons). I’m keeping up with my Tiger 900 riding buddy, incidentally. My overall fuel range is 280 miles with 30 on reserve. All it needs is better vibration damping on the handlebars (still not bad by any measure) and, perhaps, a little more seat padding. I’m only 5’8” but with a lowering link is perfectly manageable. Soft luggage completes the package. My point: light, capable, amazing fuel range and way cheaper than the competition.
The “adventure” segment is so broad that there is really no right or wrong choice. It entirely depends on what sort of riding you do. So much choice these days. Great bike!
Nice review as always....I do miss my 23' 890 R....the lower center of gravity on the KTM is pretty solid...but this new one on the 900 is pretty impressive but higher center of gravity and the gas tank could have been a half gallon more....excellent job!!!
Beautiful California and good locals. ✨ Did a demo ride on the 900 GSA today - nice bike! The Adventure gets a 6 Gallon tank, crash bars, pannier mounts, etc. The 900 motor and quickshifter are great! It’s very quiet and smooth at idle I thought! I even stalled it the first time lol. It’s also quite nimble on drop in and felt light + athletic like you said! Long legs and the power keeps coming. I hit 80 pretty quick lol. I’m close to the amazing Irv Seaver dealer and café so that’s a bonus too. I need to try it for a half day maybe 😅
Here is Oz, the 900 GS are selling around $26,500 AUD on road. Most are advertised as demos to allow drop in RRP. The go to comparison for me would be 2024 F900 GS Enduro pack plus the Dynamic pack compared with 2023/4 Nordern 901 Expedition. The Nordens brand new can be had for a little less money but as demos you would save around $3,000 AUD. Leaving price aside, the specifications are very similar so for me it would come down to riding the bikes in all conditions. With the design of the Norden I would expect it to win off road and be equal or slightly under the BMW on the highway. I have a 901 and find it hard to fault. Both are good looking. I have BMW brand loyalty and maybe that would swing me along with a possible improved long term resale value.
Thanks Ian for this great review of this awesome bike, I’m probably with you since I owned an Africa twin I would go with the new Africa twin because where I live Honda dealer is half an hour away, thanks again. Look forward to the next video.
The 900GS really seems to sell well here in Germany. My dealer said, they are very suprised at the amount of already sold bikes. Completely different ball game than the 850 before. I have been in the mid size market for a while but in the end went for the 1300. In Germany off-road is almost impossible, even gravel roads, with very few exceptions or a motor cross track. And since I plan to replace my car for the majority of everyday driving, commuting and traveling, I went for the bigger bike. But for the last half a year I was researching mid size advs and I narrowed it down to the Norden Expedition, Africa Twin and Tiger 900 Rally Pro. I only tested the Norden, but even at 20°C the engine heat was very noticible, so I didn´t buy one. I would have probably gone for the AT with electronic suspension, just for the comfort, but the test ride would have been the decider between the AT and the Tiger. In my area, the Honda dealer is also the Triumph dealer. Been in the shop 3 times, asking for a days rental of each (very common in Germany and they even advertise it). Wrote 3 mails and never gotten any reply. Today more than 2.5 months later. Went to BMW, took less than an hour to arrange a rental of the 1300 and a longer test ride of the 1250 ADV. Great treatment, easy people, responses in a very short time. Just a nice experience. Why not the 900GS? The 900GS ADV is not really different from the 850 and I was not really a fan of it. The standard looks nice, almost as good as the 1300 (my opinion of course, I know the discussion going on about the front and the stance, but I don´t care) but it is to compromised for me. Of course the better off-road handling would be nice, once I start riding some gravel roads and so on in other european countries, but the small tank, no real luggage options, limited touring comfort, not even any grab handles at the back for an easy fix of a bag with straps or anythig like that. Just not what I was looking for. BUT. I applaud BMW for going that way and risking something. The sales numbers, at least in Germany, seem to justify the move.
Loved the review it was just what I was looking for in the quest for my first ADV bike. I am narrowing the list and Aprilia is still at the top. I still want to know more about the Africa Twin so I will be on the lookout for your review.
Honestly, I cannot find a compelling reason to pick this bike (or the competitors you list) over a Tuareg. I can fully farkle a Tuareg with custom everything and ship it to South America, for less. After you get to 80ish hp, I will not (as a 62 year old average at best rider) be able to use more power. Also, as an aside, how did we get to a place where a freaking liter bike was "middleweight"? To me, 500-700cc and under 450# is middleweight. If you disagree, pick up a 500# bike 6 times after being out in the bush for 6 hours...
Interesting comment regarding DesertX air filter access - yes a pain, but my air filter after 9,000 miles with a reasonable mix of road and off-road looked about the same as your demo F900GS air filter after 300 miles. Maybe a different story in a dusty environment but I am less bothered by it now. Not an inexpensive bike to own, but accepted that when I bought it. Excellent review and thank you for the effort you put into the channel.
I owned a desert X and overall quality is better than bmw . I looked at new GS and was shocked to see brake caliper bottled on . And this price point not having radial mounting is criminal.
Its a shame they arent built any more, id love for you to test the G650X-series from BMW. Im riding a XCountry, which has 220mm forks, 160KG (352pds), 53Hp 650cc single and just a blast to ride. The X Challenge is a really good Dual sport. To me these bike are much more appealing than anything multi cylinder BMW has and had to offer.
Hey Ian, first of all I love your journalism about all the bikes and thank you for the honest review of this new F900GS. Now my question, are you also doing a video of the new F900GS Adventure because I'm really interested in that and I believe I heard you say that the Adventure is actually the 850 with a new motor or did I misunderstand. I would love to hear your opinion about the difference between the 900GS and the Adventure. When no video about the 900 Adventure is coming I would love a response in writing. Keep up the good work 👍
Another great review. I think if I had $20k to spend on an ADV bike I would look into finding a used Tiger 1200 for around $10k for longer distance touring bike and get a left over 23 Aprilla 660 for off road, I have been seeing them for around $10k. But for now I will stick to my 2020 Africa Twin but I do wish the suspension was better on it. Since having spinal cord surgery that messed up my legs I am having a little trouble with the height and weight of the AT for off road BDR style riding which is what got me looking at the 660
You are always very thoughtful and in sight. All the good and bad points of any particular bike with no type of biased which is why I really like watching your channel. I also agree 100% with you if I was in the market. The Africa twin would be my first choice. The only thing about it is that I'm six one With a thirty two inch inseam and that bike is even a little bit tall for me😊
This is the BEST motorcycle channel. Period!! Congrats and continue this great work!! Is Voge DS900X in your plans for a review? I thought I would never be interested in a Chinese bike but… things might have changed and I would like your opinion. I am considering it as a VFM bike
Are you doing the review on the GS 900 Adventure as well? It seems like that version would resolve the issues with the tank capacity and windshield protection not being big enough... Not sure if the balance will be compromised due to higher weight... Curious on how good the riding would be on the Adventure in comparison. Thanks.
Got myself a Desert X... I just love how it looks, and it very easy to ride. A bit pricy sure but hey... Air filter is a bit less of an issue as i don't live in a dusty area.
Tiger 900 gt pro. Bought a tiger 800 to see if I like it. For my riding style it’s perfect, happy with the looks, sound and feel. Planing to upgrade to the 900
Excellent video. As for dealing in suspension, maybe you could have put a rip tie around the fork to see how much it was compressing, that would have helped you dial into fuller movement, not too much, to try to get it to be more plush? It’s so difficult without knowing how much the fork Actuates compresses, then you can just dial in rebound? Super super review, you are the best in the business. Thumbs up
My pick in the mid size ADV segment is still the Tuareg 660. This F900GS probably comes second, as it reminds me of my old F800GS (great bike) on steroids, and if I had some extra budget I would definately go for the Desert X
The main takeaway I got from the video is that I want another AT. I have a TransAlp now. It is a fantastic bike....but I miss my old AT....the top heavy monster that it is.
It would be this, or the desert X or the husky 901……. But I found the desert X to be so good at everything, and so good looking, that I’d struggle not to choose it. The only flaw was in a high crosswind, but I think all these would struggle the same.
True, but I think bikes are such an important part of life, that (within reason) we should try to buy the bike we want, and make cost the second concern 😃…. I think we’re only truly happy if we buy the one we really dream of. For proper off-road, the Aprilia is the way to go (if you have a dealer nearby😃). I don’t know why, but I can never get excited about Triumph… every one I’ve ridden just leaves me uninspired.
@@laceyunderall68 that’s fair enough - I never maintain my own air filters, so it isn’t an issue. The bikes are regularly maintained but I have a dealer (Ducati, KTM and Husky) almost on my doorstep. I gather they’re easy to access on my 701 and FE350 but I wouldn’t know, as I’ve never been in there. If I were a distance away, then my stance would probably match yours.
Great video Ian! Thanks for all the content. I appreciate the comments you make on a bike’s performance, ergonomics, maintenance, etc, as well as the comparisons to other bikes. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
My pick would be the Tiger 900 RP or the new Africa Twin base, though from calling around to Honda dealers in Northern CA it looks like the AT is going to be difficult to find. I'm also having a really hard time not considering the new KTM 790, despite the alarming number of cam failures. I have a great KTM dealer and with the option to get a 4-year warranty by doing service through the dealer, it feels like there's a lot of value there. A roll of the dice on reliability? Probably, but for the price and current offers, I might be feeling lucky. Great review on the new F900GS. I want to like it more, but for the prices I'm seeing them listed for in my area and the limited fuel range, I don't think I would choose it over the competition.
Ktm doing that 4 year warranty as long as you do service at the dealer makes this question really hard. Across the board ktms midsize and full size adv bikes are the best off road and outright performance. I’m probably try the Norden 901 expedition
Nice review, Ian -- lots of relevant detail. Your drone work seems to be improving as well, nicely done! Also as an aside I enjoyed your podcast interview, with Adventure Motorcycle USA, I'm excited watching you grow your brand, and I hope it continues in this direction. Stay well!
Another great review Ian! You never mentioned the brakes at all - are they as good as the more expensive Brembos like the Ducati, Tiger, etc have? I also wondered whether you have thought of getting prices for all your test bikes on parts that are easily damaged. - clutch and brake levers, mirrors, exhaust, etc. This might be useful for your followers to understand some of the drawbacks of certain models. Thanks!
Also you can always crouch down and bend your elbows and get into an attack position if your bars a bit high, but if your bars are a bit low then you can NEVER NOT be attacking and on an ADV you don't always need to attack...
BMW just came in and released one of the best bikes in the category. The only thing I don't like is stiff/harsh suspension. I really dislike the WP Xplor stuff from KTM for that reason. It's just too stiff for normal riding.
Rick, I know you had the same bike as me for years, but I lift my f800gs facing the bike with my chest over the seat and then just push into the bike and it pops right up, no sweat. Maybe it's my size, but I find the way these gs non-boxers sit makes them really difficult to lift with my back to the bike. They just lay too low and the weight is up high. I'm only 5'7" and it's difficult to get the leverage. I've tried all combos, and for me, that is the best one. Had the Triumph and loved it, but I'm really interested in your Africa Twin review. Will you be doing one on the DCT? I'm 66 and am really thinking about the DCT as I don't do as much off road anymore. Your reviews are really excellent. Thanks!
Already did and it was the 2023 Africa Twin AS. It may not be the most powerful, just like the slightly more off-road bias and it’s a reliable good all rounder. Also, I try not to follow the herd..
The buzzingness on the handle bars would be a little draw back for me specifically for a premium bike, otherwise its a great bike but only if there is a good larger windscreen that will not cause buffeting on long distance touring imo
Having ridden most of “mid” size adv bikes recently on some offroad event, my money would go to Aprilia Tuareg 660. Don’t know why but that bike felt perfect.
I've owned a 2002 RT-P since 2006 and a 2012 GSA since new, and the one thing that might keep me from buying another BMW is their small dealer network. There is a Honda/Yamaha/KTM/Suzuki dealer in every medium-sized town. I believe there are less than 300 BMW Motorcycle dealerships in the entire United States.
You’re improving quite a bit in sand from that last video. In sand that deep I drop the hammer and find the limiter, really wrap that throttle from a standstill.
@@MikaelaSnoI have A 790-s and I’m trading it in on a 800de. The Ktm is just too uncomfortable for more than a couple hours

the phenomenon of "post-purchase rationalization" or "cognitive dissonance reduction."
this concept is rooted in psychology.
When people buy luxury or overpriced items, they may feel discomfort or guilt over spending a lot of money, especially if they are aware the purchase may not have been entirely necessary.
To alleviate this discomfort, they rationalize the purchase by focusing on emotional justifications like "it made me happy" or "it puts a smile on my face."
This type of rationalization helps them align their emotions and thoughts, so they don't feel as if they've made a poor decision. Rather than admitting the item may not have tangible benefits proportional to the price, they focus on the emotional boost or self-gratification it provides.
Essentially, it serves as a defense mechanism to cope with any lingering negative feelings related to the purchase.
It always cracks me up when you hit the power on a bike and start chuckling just like all of us do. The inner child shows itself.
Awesome review and a sweet bike according to Spurgeon! ✌🤙
It was great to ride with him at the launch.

Just bought the same two days ago! Love it!
Best comment in a review ever …. “If you can’t find a Starbucks, press this and a German man brings you a coffee”
If I had 15-20k to buy an ADV, i would buy a Tuareg and spend the 2-7k that I have left on a nice holiday with my wife ;)
If the Tuareg didn't exist, my next choices would be: 900GS over Tiger 900 Rally over 890 Adventure
That's exactly what I said.
Well, you will have plenty of time to spend with your wife, since your bike will be in the shop

As a former f800gs owner and current f900gs I couldnt be happier.
Ive tested them all ducati, ktm, triumph...f900gs was for me the ONE.
Great video!
I think so.. After I sat on and test ride a 900GS I felt in love... over my former Desertx , F900 is genius.

I actually submitted an online purchase order request for the BMW F900 on two occasions and that dealerships failed to contact me both times.
thanks for sharing!
Did I watch this when it launched on Patreon? Yep. Am I watching it again here to support the channel? Also yep. And it’s entertaining as hell.
I almost got the F900GS, but went with the Husky Norden 901 Expedition. The low fuel range of the 900GS was one of the biggest issues for me. Cheers
I made the exact same choice, hope you're loving the Husky!
The moment you asked "the question" I knew the answer was going to be...none of them, I'd rather have the Toureg 660.
Same here
I've got a Moto Guzzi V85 TT Adventure.
The 660 was WAY too small.. How in the world could you ride the crf300? 😀
Thanks for the metric conversions. Very appreciative.
Agree in ths styling
So true. The Taureg is awesome, but man is it ugly 😂
Amazing review as usual.
thanks!
this is the video I have been waiting.
So I feel you, heavy tall bikes are great, until you have to commute on them as a modest heighted person that I am too.
sell it to me mate.. I loved it. I'm in Istanbul too
Wants to see the review for Africa twin… 1st one seems compromised by suspension issue
Your videos are so comprehensive and well thought out. Very helpful. Keep it up!
Thanks, will do!
That air cleaner is so well thought out and implemented, other companies could definitely learn from this
It's basically the same engine as the 850gs and the f900xr I feel its proved itself to be a good engine.
Just traded my 850GS for a 900GS. Really enjoyed the improvements on the bike.
How many miles per tank of fuel are you getting? I want this bike but with 30 pounds of gear and 3.8 gallon tank is putting me off
Very nice!
Ian, amazing review as always and like the drone footage. My choice would be Aprilia Tuareg 660, thanks for helping me make my final decision.
All the best Ian
Good stuff! I was watching the video and started recognizing the terrain, that's my back yard! Hope you enjoyed it. Thanks for another great video.
KTM 890 Adv R ... NO doubts about it! best performance suspension, best performance motor, best performance weight distribution and crash protection from scratch without adding silly crash bars. the 900GS looks quite vulnerable to me and suspension not worth the money.
Yea, you might as well have the extra gas!! :)
Just need extra money to spend on 7/890 camshafts
I have the 790 Adventure, and it is a phenomenal bike off-road, and I’m perfectly happy to tour on it too. I just can’t see replacing it…but yes, those camshafts are a major problem…
Already bought a bike!!! Still watching big rock moto bike reviews. As always great videos ian thanks!!!
Glad you like them!
Love them although my wife hates them and doesn’t know it cause I’m always switching up bikes now 😂
Excellent review on the F 900 GS Ian! Your cinematography and presentation skills have taken a big step up over the past while with an end result of stunning visual effects and a thorough professional presentation. One can tell you are enjoying your full time gig. 🙂
I am a returning rider and have spent the last year honing my off road skills on a Honda CRF 300L with an eye towards more BMW training and an eventual move towards a twin cylinder adventure bike.
Cheers!
thank you!
Great bike!
Well said!
The cinematic drone shots in this one are great. Beautiful.
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice review as always....I do miss my 23' 890 R....the lower center of gravity on the KTM is pretty solid...but this new one on the 900 is pretty impressive but higher center of gravity and the gas tank could have been a half gallon more....excellent job!!!
Beautiful California and good locals. ✨
Did a demo ride on the 900 GSA today - nice bike!
Love from India
Please never ever stop reviewing the bikes
Your channel is a goldmine
I just want to congratulate you on your camera work, the clarity out in the desert was the best I have seen! 👍
Wow, thank you!
Great review as usual, Ian. You are head and shoulders above the rest of the motorcycle commentators.
Those were awesome. Too bad they don't make a modern equivalent
Since having spinal cord surgery that messed up my legs I am having a little trouble with the height and weight of the AT for off road BDR style riding which is what got me looking at the 660
Waiting for your Himalayan 450 review
You are always very thoughtful and in sight. All the good and bad points of any particular bike with no type of biased which is why I really like watching your channel. I also agree 100% with you if I was in the market. The Africa twin would be my first choice. The only thing about it is that I'm six one With a thirty two inch inseam and that bike is even a little bit tall for me😊
Is there a good reason you seem to avoid the Urban GS? I guess it's not off-road enough for your channel. But I'd look forward to a review by you 😊
This is the BEST motorcycle channel. Period!! Congrats and continue this great work!!
Is Voge DS900X in your plans for a review? I thought I would never be interested in a Chinese bike but… things might have changed and I would like your opinion. I am considering it as a VFM bike
I recently made this choice and went with the Ducati Desert C. Stoked 🤘
Very nice!
I always appreciate your honest, tell it like it is , reviews.
Tiger 900 gt pro. Bought a tiger 800 to see if I like it. For my riding style it’s perfect, happy with the looks, sound and feel. Planing to upgrade to the 900
Real talk: That air filter access is a significant plus for me. Would be interesting to see this next to an 890r in a video
Nice review. Love the German delivery dig. The drop test is also very helpful.
Great review thanks! Any Iidea when we will see the CFMOTO 450 MT (Ibex) review?
It would be this, or the desert X or the husky 901……. But I found the desert X to be so good at everything, and so good looking, that I’d struggle not to choose it. The only flaw was in a high crosswind, but I think all these would struggle the same.
Love the ducati
The Duc is nice until you ha e to shell out $$$$$ for the Desmo valves to be adjusted
The air filter access for the DesertX is a dealbreaker for me
@@laceyunderall68 that’s fair enough - I never maintain my own air filters, so it isn’t an issue.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
good on you for doing the metric numbers too..very useful, from Australia....
Also as an aside I enjoyed your podcast interview, with Adventure Motorcycle USA,
I'm excited watching you grow your brand, and I hope it continues in this direction. Stay well!
Thanks, will do!
Thanks!
Good ideas. The brakes are below average. I forgot to include that.
Appreciate the honesty!
Watched with interest, does the gearbox still have the clunky feel of the 850. What is the throttle mapping like, slow speed town ride vs full Enduro
The buzzingness on the handle bars would be a little draw back for me specifically for a premium bike, otherwise its a great bike but only if there is a good larger windscreen that will not cause buffeting on long distance touring imo
Great review! I'm interested to see if the new Africa Twin can dethrone the Taureg as your top pick.
Great review again, where do you test drive that BMW looks great country?
Having ridden most of “mid” size adv bikes recently on some offroad event, my money would go to Aprilia Tuareg 660. Don’t know why but that bike felt perfect.
Love the look of this bike and keep thinking it will be the next one. Then you remind me of how much better my Tuareg is.
Great video thank you! What’s expected for the 2025 model? I won’t be ready to buy for about a year.
I currently am learning to ride off rode and mechanic on a DR-Z400L. My plan is graduate to an African Twin and tour the world!
love our review, as usual. @ARiemann1 has a great review with a slight different angle. love your reviews.
I appreciate that!
Great review, so much ADV experience. Who does the lay down /lift test. ? Love the authentic outback test laboratory.
Great video. What amazing scenery!
Wonderful work as always. Your work is an inspiration for my channel efforts, but it is my night job :-)
Love you, IAN!!! Once I outgrow my amazing 310GS, this will be my bike. Cheeeers from Bulgaria.
Go for it!
You’re improving quite a bit in sand from that last video. In sand that deep I drop the hammer and find the limiter, really wrap that throttle from a standstill.
Not even in the market for this class of bike, but still watched this start to end - love your reviews. Did you drop a few pounds? Look thinner!
Great, as usual. Thank you very much!
T7 with a 5000 dollar purse to make it perfect.
And have some $$$ for a nice trip
