@London Jackson, if you use black and white in a black and white film like, A night to remember or Gojira, it’s ok, but using black and white in a colored film then it’s a insult.

I watched this movie as a child and I loved it. This was my favorite gamera movie as a kid I just really loved the scenes where the kids were stuck on the space ship. It was pretty fun but I completely agree with your criticisms it's not that good of a movie. But it was part of my childhood. I don't know why but I never had all the gamera movies, this was the first one that I watched I really loved the stock footage montage because it was all new to me at the time.
Thats pretty cool, I only discovered Gamera after I ran out of new Godzilla movies to watch (I was a teen at the time), and while the Showa era movies are good campy fun, they're definitely not up to par with the Toho monster films, at least not until the 90s came along XD. I do wonder whether or not the Showa era Gamera films would be appropriate viewing for my nieces & nephews, for when they're a little older I mean, given the blood and violence despite allegedly being kids films rather than for older audiences. Granted, I do remember thinking that sort of stuff was AWESOME as a kid (the blood & gore in Godzilla vs Gigan, Godzilla vs Hedorah, & Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla never bothered me), so I'm probably more worried about what their parents would think rather than whether they would be traumatized by the green turtle blood or not lol. I've been a kaiju fan for so long I can't really remember how old I was when I watched my first Goji flick, so I maybe worried over nothing. Sucks having to be responsible sometimes XD...Regardless, I'll more than likely introduce them to Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, & Kong first anyway >;3

In the movie, the scene where Viras “penetrates” and upside-down Gamera does look vaguely obscene - with Gamera’s appendages wiggling stretching out in wild ecstasy.
To me this movie is a fun and dopey romp that has just enough action and I actually enjoyed most of the scenes with the kids in the ufos slowly discovering the true nature of the aliens.
Nightmare fuel for me when I was little. The effects for it were bad but severing a head isn't good for 6-8 year olds.
I thought you were talking about Guiron and the Space Gyaos. Wasn't it more Viras knocked off the head or heads of his workers and you start to see their Viras heads poking out of the shoulders? Like in the shadows?
I spent years wondering if that scene where Viras cuts all those guys heads off and then they turn into copies of him and then merge with him was real or not. It helped that I had no clue what was going on in the movie by that point.
When a Kaiju movie fails to deliver on the Kaiju even if it fails on everything else, you know you messed up big time and this is no exception.

First Gamera movie I ever saw. I know this has its share of critics, but to this day, I love it!
I agree with what you said about all the stock footage from the previous Gamera films filling the void of what was a bit of a bust for this film. The other thing is Jim's constant use of a Polaroid Instamatic camera for an inexhaustible source of film. I had one as a kid and that camera gave you your photos instantly. There was no hitting the shutter button constantly and then developing the film later. Also that camera was so damn bulky seeing that kid carrying that around was painful to watch.

This film did take me by surprise when Masao and Jim get in contact with the army and have the balls to say "go ahead and blast the ship" despite still being on board. I never would expect children to make that kind of self sacrifice, even if the movie would never go through with it
Yeah I love that moment. It's like if the kids get more competent and pro-active the film suffers at least with these first four.
Gamera: Kenny is damn crazy. His infatuation with Gamera makes sense at first since it sure looks like it was an intentional rescue. Then he roasts people alive. Movie is kinda slow for me in parts honestly.
Gamera vs. Barugon: No kid! Perfect! My favorite Showa film but okay shouldn't count.
Gamera vs. Gyaos: Itchy is kinda annoying, I hate it when the kid knows everything like noticing Gyaos is nocturnal. But he isn't crazy and like Kenny he's saved by Gamera so his admiration is nice. Still he's got a gross round face but overall better than Kenny. Hey at least we get plenty of fun fights with Gamera and Gyaos.
Gamera vs. Viras: Kids are older and proactive and even willing to die for Earth...movie kinda sucks.

Eh I dunno about three great ones. Gamera is kinda slow, I love Barugon though, Gyaos I like alright. The weakest up to this point? Yeah. To from great to Viras would be like you had the Heisei trilogy then Viras came out.

At some point in the 70s I realized that I was just too old for Gamara and continued to watch Godzilla since. The new American movies including the new Japanese Gojira were a blessing.

yep. That's about what I expected. This is one is particularly infamous even if it's not the worst. It's kind of fighting for second worst with Zigra. But don't worry, the original Gamera films save the absolute worst for last. Still enjoy hearing you talk about them though. I get the feeling that the reason this one wasn't included in the MST3K Gamera reviews was because it's too boring to make fun of.
Viras is like a underwater monster more than space

This movie was where the franchise really started to suffer from it's low budget and it shows. And the reliance on stock footage, including the black and white footage of the first movie really doesn't help. And of course we have two kids as the main protagonists, which really doesn't work for me. At least not the way the showa movies did. And Viras looks just silly, but the fight was somewhat entertaining at least. I give this movie 1.5 stars out of 5.

I like the overall design of Viras, too bad the execution came off the way it did . Still as a little kid I liked this movie - heck, ANY Gamera movie was better than Nothing! :-)
Viras is a really cool monster, the last 12 minutes of the movie are awesome!

As my mother described it when I was a child, "the bumble-bee-butt spaceship" ...and yes, I wanted the kids eaten too.
To this day, she's seen it numerous times on video, and still cant remember it, picture of the monster on the cover, right in front of her, unless you tell her " bumble-bee-butt spaceship". Then she groans, remembering the rotten kids.

The most interesting thing about Viras is that he's the only Gamera foe to not have projectile or beam weapons.
The scene at 4:08 is just funny to me for some reason.
The whole severing head bit fucked me up when I saw this on tv back in the 70s. I had a lot of fun butchering it for Chiller Drive-In though.

I remember watching this one. It was so odd
I re-watched the Heisei trilogy last week and now today I've watched several Showa Gamera films. First Gyaos, Guiron and now on Jiger. I stand corrected on something: Jiger does use stock footage...at the beginning for the credits...fine by me! I still give Guiron a pass since it isn't so obnoxious as when Viras did it and it was a pretty good stretch without monster action. Plus I hadn't seen the movie about Gyaos as a kid at that point.

Thankfully the Heisei era trilogy and the millennium reboot are great.

Best gamera kaijus with gyoas
I could never comprehend a turtle monster. I've loved turtles my entire life. I had numerous turtles as a kid. A turtle monster for me is incongrous with turtles. Why not a flying prehistoric crocodile? They're historically nasty, and in the Cretaceous era there really were huge crocodilian ancestors. Gamera films might provide cool kaiju action for those of us who love kaiju films, a giant monter turtle seems pretty lame compared to the 'Big G.'
I like Guiron and Jiger movies a lot more than Viras. It's okay. That said I learned quite a few good cost cutting ideas they had, such as basically using the same room again and again by rearranging stuff. But this film started the damned 'let's re use stock footage!' Guiron strangely gets a pass for this one with me...basically because I had not seen Gamera vs. Gyaos before so when I was a kid I thought they just threw in an 'Earth Gyaos' and made new footage for an extra monster scene. Did Jiger use stock footage? Maybe that's another reason I liked it because I don't think they did. Viras as a monster is weird, so he fits in with Gamera's weird monsters, but not as neat as all the others even Zigra looks neater in design.
That said I like the look of the alien spaceship, strangely satisfying to watch it rotate. And the kids do get a step up from the previous kid in that they're older and they're ready to die to prevent the aliens from attacking. They're all 'look we're two kids you gotta attack to save the Earth!' and the poor parents start crying. The only thing I genuinely liked about Itchy in Gyaos was that he protected his grandpa from the angry villagers and HE was a big step up from Kenny in Gamera since that kid was crazy.

Ugh. This movie is just the pits. Your best bet is to just fast forward to where Viras kills his crew to gain to ability to grow to kaiju size and fight Gamera. The fight has some ridiculous moments but it's bearable. It's one star is just deserved overall though.
Loving your Gamera reviews thus far and can't wait to see those promised surprises that I also hope are Gamera-related. Yes, GAMERA VS. It's the name of the film in the U.S., so many people know it as that title. Even my first instinct is to call it Godzilla's Revenge.

Gamera vs Guiron is a bit better, but it's just a strait line from here, the movies don't improve much until the Heisei movies where they shoot threw the roof
I’m hard-core Gamera fan I only saw the first three Gamera movies and I didn’t see this one in the rest of them until I was almost out of high school and you’re right after the three the rest of them was doll cheap and boring and some of the monster fights were not enough to save the film until he came out in the 90s with his films
I loved Gamera films when I was a kid. I still love a good Godzilla film, but I just can't get into Gamera anymore. I tried to watch the original just a couple of weeks ago and couldn't suspend my disbelief. Gamera just looks so cheap by comparison to a good Godzilla film (Gojira, Shin Godzilla, even Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, etc.).
I heard that Arrival was the sequel to this flick featuring relatives of Viras??!……True or sarcasm?!!???!

I heard that Noriaki Yuasa was not a fan of the Heisei Gamera trilogy he was probably just jealous that those Gamera movies were better than his Gamera movies!

Two things this movie did that carried over to the rest of the Showa era of Gamera films.
1. Have a pair of child protagonist that are an American and a Japanese boy.
2. Reusing footage that recaped the entire series.
The latter of which annoyed the ever living crap out of me.

I absolutely hate the amount of stock footage used in this movie, literally more than half the movie is just reused scenes from the first three films! It really pisses me off.
After Gamera Vs Gyaos it was all downhill for franchise until 1995.

@@matthewdunham1689 Baragon came before Gyaos. DLRX means AFTER Gyaos so that's Viras, Guiron, Jiger, Zigra and Super. I already I liked two of those once.

I hate this fucking movie. This is easily my second least favorite film in the series. The only Gamera film I hate more than this one is Gamera vs. Zigra.
