- EDIT! I think this video is bad. I don’t even know why I bothered to make a video about killer7 when I only understood just the surface of the game’s narrative and themes. A big part of my “””analysis””” consists of me pointing at something that happens and going “that’s weird” for half of the video. I apologize that I didn’t do this game justice, and if I ever revisit Suda’s work again, I promise I’ll do better in properly dissecting the storyline. And if I can’t, then I won’t do some elongated plot summary like this video.

This one’s for the diehard Suda fans. Today, I’m talking about pretty much everything in an extremely bizarre game called Killer7. Writing this video proved to be a very tough challenge, so I hope you enjoy it.

Great video. Have been on a Killer7 kick recently again and while looking for things to make sense of the story more, I've found it interesting seeing everyone's differing interpretations of it. Nice job.

awesome video, mostly knew about this game because it was the inspiration for the rpg called OFF, but watching this video outside of the designs of the smiles and comic book-esque style, they really aren't as similiar as i thought it'd be.

Amazing ass video, while I do disagree with some of your critiques this was such a good video and am glad you covered it. I feel like you should definitely check out Suda's other works at some point since they are all so cool and unique in their own ways. This is a game that truly changed my life in so many ways and thinking about the story and what it could all mean and figuring shit out has had to be one of the most enthralling things I have ever experienced and am so glad you got to check it out.

Fantastic editing and scripting aside, I gotta say this video sold me on the game. Even if I watched it all the way through, I kinda want to still play it just to unravel it more. You repeatedly compare the events and scenes throughout the game to a fever dream and I think that's a most apt comparison 'cos fever dreams are the dreams you most often remember. Just kinda speaking from experience, I usually write down what fragments I remember of my dreams and try to piece together what they could've meant in regards to my mind - why my subconscious thought them up. So this game is kinda like that; it's like Suda51 just dumped his brain into the game and it fills up the game with this surreal element of hinting at meaning. The kind of thought that picks at you the longer you don't pick at it. This kind of storytelling is surprisingly hard. A "normal" writer - assuming normality to have some sort of mutually agreed-on definition as not a person who would write Killer7 here - would've put in the off the walls symbolism but tried to explain it ala Persona 5's cognitive shit. And a worse writer would've just crammed random nonsensical shtuff into it and tried to pass it off as deep. This game hits that perfect balance where it explains *just* enough to make it clear there's a deeper story to read into while making everything else seem indecipherable to give you the feeling that it is decipherable. And, I don't know, maybe it is. I've got my own reading into that ending. I think that's the lovely thing about a moment like this, where there's no unanimously considered "correct" theory on the events compared to something like Don't Hug Me I'm Scared, where everyone just points to it and goes "yep, that's about tv companies being evil and nothing else." The only game I think I compare this to would be the rpg OFF. Ya know, starting out with you playing a religious baseball player and his hula hoop friends fighting ghosts and travelling across oceans of liquid plastic in a duck boat. Then by the end of the game it's revealed you're a figment of the imagination of a dying child and may or may not be based off his distant/abusive father. And then it suddenly turns into a philosophical commentary on how the argument on whether or not physician-assisted suicide should be legal or not represents a microcosm of the perpetual conflict of hope vs. apathy pulling humanity forwards and backwards and apart. Or maybe it's about none of that at all and it's about something else entirely. That's what I love about this kind of open ended storytelling.
Incoherant rambling monologue aside, I've longed for a game with a sort of artstyle like this so to know it exists and is also good and also also off its meds is REEEEAAALLY exciting.
tl;dr: awesome video. Will support your channel. Love this game already. Ignore everything else I said.
wow thank you so much, wasnt expecting a comment this long on any of my videos! but i really love your insight that kinda stuff, its partly why ive been drawn to games that handle storytelling in really unique ways like silent hill 2 or something. of course thats less of an example because with sh2 its pretty obvious what the underlying themes are, its just that so many of the things in that game you can see as a symbol which is sorta similar to k7, i guess? idk man im bad at explaining things like that, also thanks for reminding me to play off since ive heard a ton of really interesting stuff with that game too
