Truly one of the greats. His work to be cherished for decades.
I've seen Springsteen 15 times, 14 with the E Street Band. I've seen Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, formed by Steve Van Zandt about five or six times. I've seen Bon Jovi, heavily influenced by Springsteen and the Jukes, four times. They are the best bands I've seen. But the best single show I've seen is Little Steven (Van Zandt) and the Disciples of Soul about seven years ago. The theater was a quarter-to-half full, and many of us got free tickets, but he played like it was sold out.
I found Silvio's on screen & SVZ's Real Life Wife to be the most alluring, drama-free and the best significant other of the entire cast most comfortable with that life. She certainly helped with his reserved demeanor.

Chase being a huge music fan and a drummer loved Van Zandt’s music, as he said in a commentary for the episode where ‘Precious’ by The Pretenders is playing (like most used likely his choice), ‘I queued up to buy that album on the day it came out……I wasn’t a kid, I was 32 years old’. So that might have been an influence in getting Van Zander, with the meta touch of one of his tracks (as a favorite of Gloria as she writhes on top on Tony), playing with the volume turned up by her.
Silvio was a brilliant character. There were so many moments when I expected him to interject, only to stay silent and wait for Tony to ask him what he had to say. He knew how to play his environment, but not in the same way Paulie navigated it.
I was going to say Artie, but he even F 'ed up and screwed over Tony a few times. Silvio, just the one time w the tiles, and he made his point. So I agree 100%, Silvio always had Tony's best interest as the boss

What a lot of people seem to miss when describing Silvio as a "cartoonish" caricature, is that Van Zandt actually played Silvio a lot more subdued in the first season & really only started being more exaggerated/animated in the following seasons.

Silvio was perfect really, he's the consigliere. He doesn't stir shit up, he's not a part of drama, he doesn't talk unless there's something to be said and he called anyone out. Even the boss (alone behind closed doors of course) when Tony needed to hear something out that he didn't particularly wanna hear. He didn't suck up to anybody. He's the soul of the crew. The boss's "jiminy cricket."
Sil was like the logical calm anchor of the crew. No fuss, no drama and he was lethal without hesitation or complaint the instant it was required. The others all had issues or complications inevitably betraying or messing up something. I think Sil was also the only one not to end up falling out with Tony along the way too.
don't forget the scene where he goes to "collect" Tracee from Ralphie's house. He keeps his cool inside the house of another wise guy, but as soon as she shows him attitude, just outside, he beats her pretty hard
Excellent analysis of my favorite character of The Sopranos. Personally, I like the fact that Silvio is an enigma, I like that there's a little mystique surrounding his character and it suits what his position in the family is, too. The consigliere position is one that is a little mysterious and shadowy since their job is to advise the boss and administration of the family and to keep their ear to the ground as far as what's happening on the street with different factions and families. It's also not uncommon for them to have strong ties to the legitimate world as well as be the liaison with other families.
Sil was my favorite. He was a perfect #2. I totally identify with him being the #2 at my job. Love his relationship with Tony and was never afraid to put him back in line. He's a great business/hit man and mobster.
I always thought Silvio was Tony’s right hand man , on more than one occasion he would sit there reading his newspaper listening to Tony’s problems and would give advice. He was a solid solder no nonsense straight to business
I thought Silvio was one of the more memorable characters. He was intelligent, calculating, diligent, ruthless, efficient, loyal, competent, and most importantly self-aware. He understood his limits. What more could you ask for in your advisor and right hand?
He looked and acted the part of the wise sage leading Tony, but why were so many mistakes made and why did he become so distant and removed from Tony's decision making process? He wasn't carrying enough of the weight that Tony did, evident by him abusing his inhaler and ending up in the hospital once the weight was passed to him. He was there to let Tony know how things would look or what the other guys would think, like a union representative. But Tony was alone with the pressure of making money and dealing with the law.

Sil's facial expressions alone were hilarious. At the same time, he was incredibly capable and lethal. I loved that scene early on where Paulie and Sil were roughing up Ariel at his hotel, and Ariel suddenly got the better of Paulie who yelled for Sil. Out of nowhere Sil pulls a wooden mallet or meat tenderizer and that takes care of that. Cool weapon. Not a knife, not a gun. Very imaginative weapon to carry.
Sil’s best scene, IMO, is when Tony tells him that Richie is looking to replace him. First, Sil’s reaction is controlled anger; he’s pissed, but he doesn’t fly off the handle because, given Richie’s attitude, he knew that this was always a possibility. Then, when Tony asks his advice, Sil takes a moment to think things through, even distancing himself from Tony for a moment, then comes back and says “I genuinely don’t think there’s anything to gain by keeping him around,” essentially telling him that Richie should be whacked. But note that he never actually says it; that’s because he knows that someone could be listening in…
Yea I think it's a great point, the reason he's the most underdeveloped character in the mob is exactly so we see him as the best succesor for Don. We haven't gotten the chance to see any flaws, but also we've seen enough of him to the point were we can start saying, maybe he just don't got that many, or any.
Silvio was the central instigator of the pro Italian protests during the Christopher episode. He also deliberately disobeyed Tony’s direct order not to steal from the job. Having Patsy boost the pallet of floor tile. He also liked to provoke Paulie… especially pointing out how much Albert and the others were bringing in
the floor tiles incident was to undermine chrissy the nepo baby, he did his job as consigliere and second-guessed christopher being promoted ahead of more deserving guys
i still consider Lillehammer a sopranos spinoff. i consider his character in that show to be silvio from sopranos in witness protection or in a coma dream.
According to some sources, the Consiglieri is a sort of labourers' representative who is elected by the soldiers, not appointed by the Boss. Obviously, that might have changed during different eras of the mob and may only be true for some families, but it's an interesting idea when looking at Sil, especially looking at the floor tiles incident.

Silvio is my favorite character in the series.
Sil was my favorite. He was a perfect #2. I totally identify with him being the #2 at my job. Love his relationship with Tony and was never afraid to put him back in line.
He's a great business/hit man and mobster.

I thought Silvio was one of the more memorable characters. He was intelligent, calculating, diligent, ruthless, efficient, loyal, competent, and most importantly self-aware. He understood his limits. What more could you ask for in your advisor and right hand?
He looked and acted the part of the wise sage leading Tony, but why were so many mistakes made and why did he become so distant and removed from Tony's decision making process?
He wasn't carrying enough of the weight that Tony did, evident by him abusing his inhaler and ending up in the hospital once the weight was passed to him. He was there to let Tony know how things would look or what the other guys would think, like a union representative. But Tony was alone with the pressure of making money and dealing with the law.

Sil's facial expressions alone were hilarious. At the same time, he was incredibly capable and lethal. I loved that scene early on where Paulie and Sil were roughing up Ariel at his hotel, and Ariel suddenly got the better of Paulie who yelled for Sil. Out of nowhere Sil pulls a wooden mallet or meat tenderizer and that takes care of that. Cool weapon. Not a knife, not a gun. Very imaginative weapon to carry.

Sil’s best scene, IMO, is when Tony tells him that Richie is looking to replace him. First, Sil’s reaction is controlled anger; he’s pissed, but he doesn’t fly off the handle because, given Richie’s attitude, he knew that this was always a possibility. Then, when Tony asks his advice, Sil takes a moment to think things through, even distancing himself from Tony for a moment, then comes back and says “I genuinely don’t think there’s anything to gain by keeping him around,” essentially telling him that Richie should be whacked. But note that he never actually says it; that’s because he knows that someone could be listening in…

Yea I think it's a great point, the reason he's the most underdeveloped character in the mob is exactly so we see him as the best succesor for Don. We haven't gotten the chance to see any flaws, but also we've seen enough of him to the point were we can start saying, maybe he just don't got that many, or any.
Silvio was the central instigator of the pro Italian protests during the Christopher episode. He also deliberately disobeyed Tony’s direct order not to steal from the job. Having Patsy boost the pallet of floor tile. He also liked to provoke Paulie… especially pointing out how much Albert and the others were bringing in

i still consider Lillehammer a sopranos spinoff. i consider his character in that show to be silvio from sopranos in witness protection or in a coma dream.
I loved his character, you need someone like this in your team. You can rely on him and he’s level headed. Steve was great in Lillehammer too.
According to some sources, the Consiglieri is a sort of labourers' representative who is elected by the soldiers, not appointed by the Boss. Obviously, that might have changed during different eras of the mob and may only be true for some families, but it's an interesting idea when looking at Sil, especially looking at the floor tiles incident.
Yes, he's the #3 actually. And is the representative/messenger role from the Boss and Underboss to the rest of the guys.

Here's why Silvio was my favorite. He's fair. Adrianna was a rat, the stripper owned him money, and Bert was about to kill Tony, so Sil is the best!
Paulie being the one to instigate all the drama in "Christopher" does make way more sense and it's my headcanon now 😅
