    Hey, having a weakness to wood isn't that bad. It's what made Solomon Grundy a threat since he was part plant matter.

    Ok, I'd argue that DC didn't try to to forget about Hal being Parallax. If anything, they bring it up as a part of Hal's past as an important character flaw.

    The weaknesses made more sense, in context, back in the day. These were the days of nearly omnipotent heroes. Seriously, I think the number one thing that DC wants people to forget about Green Lantern is that his ring was good for a lot more than just flying through space and making green constructs. It could do anything, literally anything. You want to read minds, phase through walls? No problem. You want to shrink a villain to microscopic size and store him in your ring? No problem. You want to program the ring to revive you and the rest of the Justice League anytime you get defeated? No problem.
    With an omnipotent hero (and all the DC heroes were crazy powerful like this), you have to have weaknesses. Superman had magic, three kinds of kryptonite, gravity, red sun radiation, etc. Wonder Woman had "men chaining her bracelets together" along with weird effects if she removed her bracelets. So, Hal Jordan had to have a weakness, and yellow was it. It made it so that normal people could defeat a god. These days, instead, we have much wimpier heroes, which I think is not an improvement.
    And with Alan's weakness, it was weirdly developed. Originally, his ring only affected metal (when it wasn't doing, say, absolutely anything Alan wanted it to). So, he was vulnerable to wood only because it was not metal. He was equally vulnerable to, say, plastic and rock. It was only as time went on, with him constantly being clobbered by wooden objects, that it was decided that he had a weakness to wood.
    Something else that I think DC wants people to forget about a Green Lantern-related character is the fact that Hal's girlfriend Carol (Star Sapphire) killed John Stewart's wife, Katma Tui. But because that would contradict DC's desire to have Carol be a superhero now, everybody just ignores that Star Sapphire is an evil evil villain who killed Katma Tui and once was a member of the Triumvirate of Evil (Her, Guy, and Hector Hammond) who tried to kill Hal, leaving him powerless in the vacuum of space. But then, DC is turning all their evil villainesses into heroes, and i"m not sure why. It seems that they think that nobody with boobs could possibly *really* be evil. ("Poison Ivy to the rescue!")

      Naw they started redeeming villainesses not because they're villainesses, but because the ones they did redeem where already really popular and had fan bases totally okay with them becoming woobies.
      I mean Harley is fun and just misunderstood, meanwhile Ivy and her are fun together and it sticks a bone in the Joker's craw leading to obvious story hooks. Most of them go along those sorts of lines and its not that dissimilar from the Griffith did nothing wrong, meme folks. Because its taking a villain that is obviously a villain and redeeming them because they're fun, interesting, or attractive to the audience. And I can say that, while utterly loving Batman: White Knight where we did the same thing with the Joker himself. XD

  • @SimonMoon5
    @SimonMoon5 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Oh, here's another thing they want you to forget:
    While they want you to remember that Hal's ring could not affect the color yellow (due to a "necessary impurity" in the ring), what they don't want you to remember is that Hal did not curl up and die everytime someone dressed in yellow showed up. Hal had had so much practice dealing with this weakness that he could always find a way around it. For example, when fighting The Shark (who had an "invisible yellow aura" around himself) in a warehouse whose walls were turned yellow by the Shark, it seemed like Hal wouldn't be able to do anything, right? Nope, he used his ring to create a refrigeration unit that froze the water vapor in the air into a solid block of ice that he could use to hit the Shark. One of the great things about heroes having a weakness like this is that it was always an opportunity for the hero to show off their incredible intelligence (which never happens anymore because if any of the Justice Leaguers (other than Batman) were smart, Batman would have no purpose).
    One can also contrast Hal's incredible intelligence and resourcefulness with Kyle's. When Kyle was suddenly given Hal's old ring to use and had to face the imminent threat of a yellow school bus... Kyle had no idea what the **** to do.

    • @Bluesit32

    • @kingbeauregard
      @kingbeauregard 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For what it's worth, Arisia was retconned to be significantly older than Hal: a year on her planet is like five on earth, so she was actually an adult by earth standards. Not a great retcon but I'll take it. Poor Hal, writers tried so hard to inject drama into his life by turning him into scum: he dated a teenager, he was a mooch, he dated Guy's fiancee, he was an insurance adjuster.

    That last one's actually kind of commonplace, creators backing off an idea because of fan suggestions. That's why a lot of times when fans suggest something for a video game, game devs will back off and not use the idea simply because they don't want to get sued.

    • @Nx57ytre

      Killing your fiancé is the offensive part. Apart that death of a loved one as part of the history of origin is already a repetitive cliche, what is the point of changing the character's sexuality if they are not going to do anything new with this?
      Alan Scott's son, Obsidian, came out of the closet years before the New 52s and in fact that ported something to him and his relationship with his father.
      On top of that, New 52 Earth 2 is just a bad comic that has nothing to do with the JSA or the pre-Earth Crisis 2.

    So 10 things dc ACTUALLY WANTS TO FORGET ABOUT GL:
    10. Lord Malovio: a villian during the action comics weekly, he was an half alien lord who forced hal to take his ring because...reasons. This character was abandoned after 1 story arc and mentioned once.
    9. Mosaic: ostensibly a deconstuction of john and the exploitation of modern culture through a philosophical lens. It quickly fell into a quagmire of pretentiousness, quotes, and pop culture references until suddenly john became a guardian. It was never brought up again.
    8. Jack t chance. Full of 90s angst jack chance (get it) was a mistake. Hailing from a planet of outlaws jack chances character was interesting to say the least. After emerald twilight he showed up twice before parallax (kyle) killed him off. This character was so 90s that his oath included yowza and "kick butts" in it.
    7. Hobo bill. Bill baguette was a gl villian in the 60s. His gimmic was to steal or use hals power ring for personal gain. He appeared three times eaxh time wrestling with hal for the ring and just vanished after the gl/ga days.
    6. Gl movie/game. Not much to say. Both were terrible. Both were cash grabs and both were forgotten.
    5. Millennium. A book series that spunoff of green lantern involving tom (pieface). The point of the book was a grouo of metahumans propogating their genome to forcfully evolve humanity to the next level of conscious. It introduced legendary villian snowflame (guy whos superpower is powered by cocaine. Yes really) after a brief stint they just kinda hung around for a bit before being wiped out in the early 90s (gl:third law)
    4. Sinestro's sister. In 1972 readers were introduced to sinestro's sister. Turns out shes a mage who can teleport harpies out of a magic ruby that contains medusa. She was quickly forgotten.
    3. His racism agaist Eskimos, and sexism in the silver age. The pieface one has been crowed to death, but did you know that hal once told carol to "get back in the kitchen, where your sex belongs."
    2. Star sapphire's child. In the 90s star sapphire and predator were personalities in carrol (except predator was a demon as well?) However somehow. Just somehow. The two of them did the dirty and got star sapphire pregnant and she shares a body with carol and yet carol doesn't have the same pregnancy. After the issue it was never brought up again.
    1. Arrisa. Back in the 80s hal and carol broke up (mainly because she was star sapphire at the time but whatever) so the writers took arisa: a thirteen year old alien girl and forcefully age her to "maturity" so that hal could boink her. It was creepy weird and the writers multiple attempts to justify it did not help affairs.
    Honorable mentions: warrior (guy gardner's 90s identity), Darkstars, women in fridges, fort knox (goldfaces car), eve dormus, charlie Vickers (the second lantern of earth after hal), grayven (darkseid's son), and hal jordan the letter. (i would have added a few more but i ran out of time.

    The thing DC hasn't locked in on is GL's power level. Back in the day, he easily beat Bizarro and superman-level Kryptonians and villains. He's moved planets, time travelled etc. Post Marz, Kyle and Hal get waxed by mid-level characters. Then, inexplicably he suddenly has the power to drill a hole in a beyond-Superman level cosmic character.

    "Guy is no one's favorite." Wrong: he's my favorite comic book character ever. I have what little Guy Gardner merch has been made available (including Comicon exclusive stuff) to prove it. An the entire run of his solo book (which transitioned into Warrior) as individual issues.
    EDIT: Here's one that takes some digging: Hal Jordan is the reason Guy is the way he is. And indirectly got Jon Stewart's wife killed. When Guy was first introduced, he was pretty much a saint. He was a former prison social worker who the closest you got to him having issues with anger at all was him leaving the job out of fear that being around so many angry prisoners might have a negative effect on his psyche (reasonable to assume: he has degrees is sociology and psychology and was badly abused growing up). He then became a gym teacher for special needs children. Even without a ring, or knowledge he could have been the Green Lantern had Hal not been closer to the dying Abin Sur at the time, Guy saved a busload of children and ended up badly messing up his leg, leaving him with a limp for a long time.
    Cut to a bit the future. Guy is aware that he was one of the two choices of Earth's Green Lantern, and is pretty chummy with Hal. Hal's also told him if anything happens to him or he steps down, Guy will become the next Green Lantern. Hal gets into a fight with Sinestro where he ends up running his mouth, mentioning it doesn't matter if Sinestro kills him because there's another on Earth primed to take his place, and it doesn't take Sinestro long to figure out it's Guy.... who he throws into the Phantom Zone. When Guy finally made it out, he was in a coma for years and brain damaged. During this time where his good friend was in the hospital, clinging to life, Hal.... proceeded to date his fiancée and almost married her. In fact, their wedding was mutually aborted by the news that Guy woke up, although Kali declared she couldn't choose between them and eventually vanished from continuity. As a result of the brain damage, Guy suffered from impulse control issues, including an inability to keep his temper in check or his mouth shut. The thing is unlike other DC characters, who act like assholes and are unrepentant, Guy's usually shown to be honestly trying to improve himself and overcome his condition (to varying degrees of success, and what he considers success).
    As for Jon Stewart, during one of the many times Carol Ferris was possessed by Star Sapphire, rather than getting into an outright battle with Hal they had a more philosophical disagreement: Star Sapphire claimed that love could motivate every single other emotion. Hal was dubious and argued this wasn't true. To make her point, she decided she had to kill a Lantern's true love to show Hal that it could lead into rage. She couldn't kill Hal's love, since that was her host, so she went for Jon Stewart's wife, the badass Lantern in her own right Katma Tui. The point was made and in a moment of fridgeception: a woman was killed to cause emotional trauma to a man to cause emotional trauma to ANOTHER man. (Katma Tui actually died twice. The second has yet to be undone as of where I last read. In fact, the current Rebirth run even has Hal meet Katma in the Lantern afterlife and she asks him to let Jon know she's proud of him and happy.)

    • @SimonMoon5
      @SimonMoon5 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      It's not just the issue of women being murdered, tortured, etc. The issue is instead about the fact that often women only exist in stories to be killed in order to give the *male* character motivation. Women are killed off just so that the important character (the man, of course) will feel mad/bad/sad/angry, so that the main character (the man) will have his character arc move forward. It is far far rarer for the opposite to happen. And with an historically limited reprsentation of women in comics, this is particularly noticeable.

    • @ianbailey6592
      @ianbailey6592 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Imagine if the purpose of many male characters was just to go through some horrible ordeal or get killed off so that the female character would have motivation to finish their goal.

    • @TimTE01
      @TimTE01 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Comics are infamous for using Women as Plot Devices. They didn't always make them Characters.
      Sometimes it happened from the start with them- like Rayner's Girlfriend- while others had it done to them since nobody in charge apparently cared about said character- like Batgirl in The Killing Joke.
      It's a thing that happened (and still does), so don't pretend that it is fake or part of some conspiracy. It's not.

    I personally liked the 2011 Green Lantern Film, I understand why people didn't like it, but I think it is better than some movies that was made recently, I don't care to mention which ones, but I do see it better than some movies that didn't come out too long ago, not that I'm insinuating that it is a great movie mind you, I'm clearly acknowledging it had issues, but I think it isn't as bad as people make it out to be, because there were Comic-based movies that were more terrible. To be fair I'd give the movie a 5-6/10 at most, nothing more, nothing less. Of course I'm generalizing it, I don't mean the entirety of the film is superior than those specific movies I'm thinking of, I'm mostly referring to the plot, and the ideas that were in it.

  • @kingbeauregard

    Personally I liked Hal as the Spectre. According to that version of things, the Spectre is not the wrath of God -- who doesn't even NEED wrath, when you think about it -- but rather a manifestation of the wrath of Mankind Left on its own, it will rampage and destroy. But bind it to a particular human soul -- say, one with indomitable will that has experienced rage and has chosen a better path -- and you have a human soul that can tame the Spectre, and by taming the Spectre, help improve the nature of mankind. Hal / Spectre was as powerful as any Spectre, but was also given to merciful application of justice. One of the very best depictions of Hal, I thought, even if it didn't have much to do with Hal The Texas Ranger-esque Hero. He was a terrific uncle to his niece Helen too.

    I have a feeling DC would like everyone to forget the power ring lobotomy from Peter David's run in Action Comics Weekly, which is sad because that was my favorite part of Peter David's run of Green Lantern stories. DC has since amended the criterion for becoming a Green Lantern to the ability to overcome great fear, but the criterion used to be the complete lack of fear, which, as David adroitly noted, is impossible. So in Peter David's retconning of Green Lantern's origin, Abin Sur's ring removed fear from Hal Jordan's brain.
    Also, Lord Malvolio, an oversized villain whose costume was similar to the Golden Age Green Lantern's. That was the best of the Christopher Priest/Mark Bright GL stories, and I was really disappointed when that story wasn't continued the Green Lantern Special that supposed to tie up the storylines from Action Comics Weekly.
    Gail Simone can pound sand as far as I'm concerned.
