Couldn’t Kendrick sue Drake by the same logic with domestic abuse allegations? This won’t work as he thinks it will. I’m guessing drake will play on slander. However, that requires to prove that Kendrick didn’t believe what he was saying. However, there’s like so much footage about that behaviour from drake. So, I really doubt that lawsuit will really go anywhere.
he isn’t suing kendrick. He is suing his label as they only promoted one side of the beef and used illegal tactics to promote NLU on steroids all to lower his re-up price.
Craziest thing about this is in my mind is he lost the battle when kendrick dropped Meet the Grahams. A song that got zero radio play for obvious reasons. Not Like Us was just the icing on the cake beating Drake at his own game and making a banger out of a diss song. I'm legit baffled as to why he's taking this legal route. His financial damages must be very severe coming out of the beef. So much so that he can take the L culturally for taking legal action after losing the battle. Long story short, if Kendrick didn't decisively win this battle with the music, the payola and all that stuff wouldn't matter cause the records wouldn't hit. Salute to Kendrick. Whole thing is quick sand now. The more Drake struggles and fights the deeper he sinks.

The problem with Drake going independent is that it’s too expensive for him to maintain the brand on his own. The beats, ghostwriters, marketing and promotion, tours, music videos are too expensive. Also, due to the lawsuit associating with Drake can end up hurting with your career as he will be blackballed. That is even without adding in the whole OVO sweatshop and Karen behaviours. Him going independent would be a rude awakening so I can see why he would rather renegotiate and keep the machine behind him. He knows he’s nothing without it.
There's specific part of Drake's petition that sounds like self snitching in a Hip-Hop context because his lawyers are complaining about a lack of protection for a priority artist from UMG as the label were aware of the lyrics and cover art of Not Like Us before it was released. Self snitching because Pusha T Story of Adiddon was taken down from DSPs mainly because of the cover art that is a picture of Drake in blackface. In 2020 another Pusha T verse was removed from Pop Smoke's posthumous album because the label as a priority artist would inform him if another UMG artist is dissing him prior to the songs being released.
Brother Markman. Really appreciate your content. This all just feels so weird. I cannot understand the play here for Drake. Seems like the cost to his reputation and brand would be too great to take this scorched earth move just to get a better contract. While I do not think a lawsuit will ultimately be filed, I think discovery in such a suit (or suits) would be interesting. I do not think Drake has thought through how discovery on both the defamation and RICO claims could also back fire on him. Since truth is a defense to defamation, clearly lawyers will be looking into Drake's "love life", cell phone history, security videos, marketing efforts, etc. If he has some questionable stuff hidden in a closet somewhere, it will come to light. Further, how can he expect to be taken seriously in hip hop circles after this move. Maybe it will all blow over and he'll be on the top of charts again. But, I'm skeptical.
I was thinking the same thing, investigation and discovery goes both ways,,, and Kendrick's layers can Subpoena AK because there is a video of him saying that, Drake and Future have the same party's as Ditty in Miami,, I mean since there using AK's video about the bots as evidence surely they can use that as evidence also,, and there is another video of a guy called Israel I forgot his last name,, but he said Drake be busing girls in, , and if across state lines that's called trafficking, so yeah this rabbit whole can go deep.
The end-game is most likely to get out from up under that $400M contract/debt that he has with Universal; especially considering if his claims are proven his brand may have been damaged by the company (business partner) that he owes in the process of helping a competing brand/artist, thereby making it more difficult or maybe impossible to recoup that monstrous debt to them. Basically a high-stakes conflict of interest claim. Not so much about Kendrick or the song directly, but more about his 'business partner' Universal Music allegedly working against him (to keep him in debt to them).
Great breakdown, one thing he did mention Adonis when he spoke to him on Meet The Grahams, but still out of all this we can all agree Drake pushed Kendrick to go where he want even after the warnings!
That was the point: Drake called Kendrick a wife beater, called Whitney a hoe, and said Dave was the secret father of Dot’s children. AFTERWARD, that is specifically why he came back with MTG. He warned Drake in 616 that his camp had leaked info and Kendrick knew what he was gonna do and was prepared, and he told him not to do it. Aubrey ignored him, went personal, and got his ass whooped for it.
This is not hip-hop at all, this is some culture vulture type of actions, where are the elder statesman in hip-hop to speak out against this shit, where is LL Cool J, where is KRS one, where is Rakim, where is Big Daddy Kane, etc. this is why hip-hop has been taken from us and white washed, this is the only culture that let outsiders come in and do what the fuck they wanna do and we just accept it because you can’t go into other people’s culture and do what the fuck you want they were exile your ass
Here is the funny part DRAKE, IF and i mean a big IF he can get this to court and WIN, he will say see look at me, look at what I did for all of you. So strange, but what we do know is Lucien DOES NOT FUCK AROUND when it comes to attacking his label!
Drake should tread lightly, before not like us hit the radio, Drake said in songs that Kendrick was a woman beater, that his girl was a cheater, that his girl slept with his friend. That his child is not his child, that it’s his friends child and a lot more. So when you say defamation, you need to look at the stuff you said, waaaaay before Not Like Us. Also UMG promoted your music as well as Kendrick’s as your both artists under them. And hey promoted your words as they promoted his.
I called it months ago as NLU was going crazy everywhere.....only thing that was running through my mind was drake 400 mill deal and the damage the song was doing......I immediately said to myself this is gonna lead into a court room
The fucked up thing is, by him levelling the accusations against UMG with regards to the defamation, what he’s basically saying is… that he expected UMG to handcuff Kendrick in order to give Drake an edge in the battle? Like, he expected them to stack the deck in his favor, and when They didn’t he lawyered up. That’s like starting a fight with your sibling, getting beat up, and then blaming your dad for not Holding your brother down while you kicked him in the ribs
@@RobMarkmanHe expected them to edit it out, is exactly what he said. However, no edits were made for Family Matters 🤔. Let me get him, but don’t let him get me mentality. As you mentioned, murder isn’t edited out, or glorified drug addiction. He has been their guy, and he expected them to treat him as the favorite child.
"Uh, I was really, really tryna keep it PG / I was really, really tryna keep it PG" At this stage in the beef, the way everything has unfolded with this second legal filing, aren't these the funniest lines in this beef?
One thing to think about is UMG might be using “Not like Us” and the aftermath of the battle to leverage not giving him what he wants in contract negotiations. But to your point Drake and Kendrick brought us here so whatever wins and losses come from it on either side it is what it is.
If you are up for promotion at work or negotiating a contract, wouldn’t you be on your best behavior . The battle with Pusha allegedly had some financial effect on his brand. Not to this level of course, but still an effect. He didn’t learn his lesson from that or he never thought he’d lose. I agree the tactics of the label are shady. Still, he fully engaged in this battle, and also made wild claims. They just didn’t stick! This lawsuit is a tantrum, it’s an attempt to shift blame to UMG and it’s cringe af .
Was funny is not like us was actually dying down, no one was really talking about it anymore, only thing they mention about if he was gonna do that do it at the Super Bowl, but outside of that the song was cooling off and he just reignited it. I guarantee you the song is going to go back up to charts now
@@MrMattyg25 wow. I missed that one. Based on his moves since the beef ended it makes sense. Almost every single thing he said and done has been a misstep. But he keeps doing it. It would be fascinating to hear what his people are telling him to do when he makes these decisions
Son could’ve just took his L in peace, go on a lil hiatus and then come back stronger. He decided to crash out instead and potentially end his career. This type of L should be studied. Real talk 😂
Literally. A little two year break and then come back with So Far Gone 2 or something. I think he’s sucked the culture dry and is burning it down before he leaves. He’s done with his black side lol
Just from a legal standpoint Drake has no case. In a defamation case you have to show direct correlation as to damages. There are too many factors that could cause Drakes claims. It could simply be that Drake loss the battle. There's to many variables for Drake's to pinpoint the "actual" cause if any.
That line about Whitney in push ups was actually a bit more insulting. He used the whoo kid tag at the beginning and the bodygaurd line to insinuate he knew one of Kendricks children wasn't his.
Rob, you are one of the few person's deserving of their platform within this hiphop culture/community. Thank you for your content. I just have to say, this "beef" is so layered as a cultural phenomenon and says so much about the progression or maybe regression of hiphop as a genre and invention produced by black culture. Man... DRAKE YOU CORNY!
I just keep thinking about how hiphop started as not only black expression of various emotions; joy, sadness, pain, etc. But in function how it started from essentially little "beefs" like this. My crew vs. your crew, who raps better, who has better beats and record selection. Now ppl suing for starting problems they can't finish bc they hard headed.... *sigh*
Drake really just going a round about way to sue Kendrick for Defamation. According to Drake’s team UMG already told Drake if he proceeds, he should just sue dot. If drakes claim of defamation is valid then umg also has a valid claim against dot as well and just join drakes side against dot.
Suing Dot will fail. There's evidence of Drake telling Kendrick to do what he did. Kendrick even warned him. He didn't listen, he got his ass kicked with words.
@@iamjoehilllol u think his lawyers didn’t look over the papers before filing?! We all know drake ain’t built like a lot of us but stupid isn’t a thing I think when I read that lawsuit. Time will tell tho. If he wins this lawsuit it won’t be as funny as ppl seem to be getting mad about it later.
People are trying to position Drake as being the good guy in this situation (because they hate Kendrick) by saying that Drake is doing this to stop the shady acts of labels and make things more fair for smaller artists, but what's going to happen if Drake succeeds is labels are going to be way more involved in the music creation process and they're going to make sure there's nothing in the music they can get sued for so this doesn't happen again. It's gonna make it so that artists have way less freedom to make the music they would like to make and it's not gonna be a good thing for the music that comes out.
Hi Rob! Love your content. Like you stated, he has been negotiating his deal. He is suing his label for artificially boosting the streams as a smear campaign to devalue his brand so they could pay him less money. They used this specific song because it happens to be calling him a pedo. This has nothing to do with him losing a rap beef lol. If it was soley about losing the beef, he would have filed a defamation lawsuit against Kendrick when NLU came out to prevent it from taking off. Timing makes it look, bad, but I understand why.
I think “you don’t know nothing about that” was a level deeper. Had nothing to do with drakes ability to be a father and absolutely nothing to do with his kid. Kendrick was literally saying “you don’t know nothing about how I raise my child because you can’t know. My family matters are just that private.” We wouldn’t know what Kendrick’s kids looked like if we saw them on the street. But we’d know Adonis with his back to us because Drake parades him everywhere for a check. This is a verse that embodies the trope “a hit dog will holler”. Drake hollered lol

At this point i feel like since Drake going scorched earthi have a feeling UMG might start airing out all the aid they did for drake. They'll take a loss for it but would also knock Drake down a couple pegs to point out hes not bigger then everyone else you just had a lot of help.
Drake lost the battle but he didn't have to lose the war. As of now the OVO owl is some roadkill on a L.A. Highway

Great video, Rob. It's crazy just how selective some stans or fans are being with their memory. Some podcasters and streamers really feel like Kendrick is the one who escalated this but i remember damn well my reaction when i first heard the whitney line, heard and watched the family matters video. It felt like it went way left after those moments
Judge throwing this out if it ever makes it to court. This speech is par for the course in the realm of hip-hop. If a Judge prosecutes because of lyrics then when does it end? Make a song threatening violence. Next day arrested for harassment. Use slurs? Next day arrested for hate crimes. Drake just opened up a Pandora's Box that Thug just had to climb out of🤦🏿♂️
Usage of slurs should be seen as a hate crime. Idk bout arresting anyone for it but language can be just as violent as actions

If this was just about UMG, why did he file the petition the following business day after GNX dropped? Drake is trying to step on Kendrick’s moment.
Drake does not have to resign with UMG. if they want to low ball him go independent or find another major. Drake is moving like his business is bad.
Elijah Muhammad said you can tell things are close to the end when the people at the top are at odds
Tryna get out of his contract...took a page out of Kanye playbook but Kanye way more RESPECTED
Drake said he is the one who fed Kendrick Lamar the information 😂🤦🏽♂️, he also called him a woman beater
He fed him the info bout the daughter..
🫡 good work last night bro
thank you sir
Well Meek should sue Drake and all these publications…as he literally was affected the most!!
Thank you rob for your work and integrity, we appreciate you so much in this space

thank you for watching.
Great breakdown, one thing he did mention Adonis when he spoke to him on Meet The Grahams, but still out of all this we can all agree Drake pushed Kendrick to go where he want even after the warnings!
Yes, Meet the grahams was after Family matters though
That was the point: Drake called Kendrick a wife beater, called Whitney a hoe, and said Dave was the secret father of Dot’s children. AFTERWARD, that is specifically why he came back with MTG.
He warned Drake in 616 that his camp had leaked info and Kendrick knew what he was gonna do and was prepared, and he told him not to do it. Aubrey ignored him, went personal, and got his ass whooped for it.
@ ahhh I missed that part I thought we was talking “in general”, my bad thanks ahahahaha
@@Guha95 👊👊👊💗💯
Why would UMG do this to one of their own cash cows?? Makes no sense.
Contract renegotiations, this is just Drake pulling a power move. He feels UMG will low-ball him.
UMG & Spotify been boosting his signal for years and not one lawsuit was filed. I can’t respect this off a rap battle.
💯
Here is the funny part DRAKE, IF and i mean a big IF he can get this to court and WIN, he will say see look at me, look at what I did for all of you. So strange, but what we do know is Lucien DOES NOT FUCK AROUND when it comes to attacking his label!
This is the best take I’ve seen on this topic. Thank you!
I actually was looking forward to your gnx videos, I really enjoyed teh Gloria one.
We getting back to that
I guess Kendrick got the order right in that trifecta in 6-16 when he’s rapping from Drake’s perspective. ☹️
I don’t think he’s exactly saying that but more so he didn’t expect them to so heavily market the song.
But the wrong label on me imma get em dropped!!!!!
Thanks for the great coverage of the defamation claim. I can't wait to hear more of your thoughts on the new Kendrick album.

My question is did UMG do this for Drake's previous releases since he's their money maker.....sounds like Drake is projecting.
"Uh, I was really, really tryna keep it PG / I was really, really tryna keep it PG"
At this stage in the beef, the way everything has unfolded with this second legal filing, aren't these the funniest lines in this beef?
Idk what this is but it ain’t hip hop lmao
Yeah man
Corporate crap
Hip hop isn’t even real. It’s called rap. Non black people came up with the concept of hip hop to defy the actual culture.
One thing to think about is UMG might be using “Not like Us” and the aftermath of the battle to leverage not giving him what he wants in contract negotiations. But to your point Drake and Kendrick brought us here so whatever wins and losses come from it on either side it is what it is.
Yeah. And i can’t 100% say what those negotiations are but yeah
Salute dawg. I seen you on tmz yesterday. Yessir 🫡🫡🫡
Was funny is not like us was actually dying down, no one was really talking about it anymore, only thing they mention about if he was gonna do that do it at the Super Bowl, but outside of that the song was cooling off and he just reignited it. I guarantee you the song is going to go back up to charts now
This video is evident of journalistic integrity. There's a realistic-ness yet professionalism. Cheers, Rob 🎉

Just from a legal standpoint Drake has no case. In a defamation case you have to show direct correlation as to damages. There are too many factors that could cause Drakes claims. It could simply be that Drake loss the battle. There's to many variables for Drake's to pinpoint the "actual" cause if any.
The Tupac AI song asked Kendrick to mention those allegations. Drake is a professional victim. 😂
I think drake is trying to block not like us being perform at the super bowl
Yeah. Seems like this could be leading to that. But probably easier to send a cease and desist to the nfl.
That line about Whitney in push ups was actually a bit more insulting. He used the whoo kid tag at the beginning and the bodygaurd line to insinuate he knew one of Kendricks children wasn't his.
17:09 they forget that part of the beef
Rob, you are one of the few person's deserving of their platform within this hiphop culture/community. Thank you for your content. I just have to say, this "beef" is so layered as a cultural phenomenon and says so much about the progression or maybe regression of hiphop as a genre and invention produced by black culture. Man... DRAKE YOU CORNY!
Thank you for the love.
Called him a wife beater first though so it invalidates itself
Suing Dot will fail. There's evidence of Drake telling Kendrick to do what he did. Kendrick even warned him. He didn't listen, he got his ass kicked with words.
@@iamjoehilllol u think his lawyers didn’t look over the papers before filing?! We all know drake ain’t built like a lot of us but stupid isn’t a thing I think when I read that lawsuit.
Time will tell tho. If he wins this lawsuit it won’t be as funny as ppl seem to be getting mad about it later.
I’m just a regular music fan. Where’s does marketing money and budget end and ‘payola’ begin?
I think it’s a combination of things
I don’t think this is to actually sue UMG this is either for him to prove they did so when he renegotiates his contract or to get out of a contract.
"This a lifelong battle with yourself" ringing truer every day
I think “you don’t know nothing about that” was a level deeper.
Great breakdown.
