I'm agnostic about the severity of climate change. Until then I'll remain agnostic.

Concrete surfaces accumulate/ hold more energy during the day, called the Urban Heat Island Effect. Dr Spencer has been doing very interesting work developing a process to properly compensate for it. If an Urban Station is trending down at night, despite urban heat island effect warming with stored every over the day, you can count on the actual temperature being even colder! I'm not familiar with where BOM stations are sited. In the US they're typically sited at Airports next to the tarmac.

Have I think about it first if the temperature instruments are near a airport.
The heats up because of the tarmacs which rises and undoing so it draws in cool air.
Which would mean the recorded temperature would be of the cool air being drawn in be the hot air rising.
So there goes you heat island.
I have watched the pelicans using the hot air rising at Amberley.

I wouldn't trust anything from the BoM claiming it as data. even when they quote 'raw' temperatures they put raw (adjusted) data out there. What really is mad is with each new system in place even from the raw (adjusted) data you get a roughly 20% increase in warming each time. So the HD system was warmer than raw (adjusted), ACORN warmer than HD and ACORN 2 warmer than ACORN. They (BoM) would claim it would not matter where the algorithm starts they would still end with the same result but what was shown is that by using sites to adjust other sites works only in benefit of the warming narrative. Alice Springs, Darwin, Mackay to name a few were sites that had either cooling or neutral trends that were adjusted by sites a great distance away. In the case of Mackay at the time is was adjusted by a site 250klm away that was inland and apart of a expanding airport due to increased local mining activity. the Mackay site was a cane farm some 8klm from the CDB that had been a farm with no structures around the site for over a century.
Darwin was, much like Amberley, started in 1941 but this time they had anywhere up to 5 thermometers that were in close agreement anywhere in Darwin at one time though mostly only 1 or 2 sites there were 3 sites for quite a few of those years as well. The trend was adjusted by a site about 500klm away that was situated beside a pub that turned Darwin into yet another warming site. While Alice Springs was a cooling site turned into a warming site again adjusted to become a warming site. The problem that this does it not only do site like Alice Spring invert their temperature trends but these remote sites then account for up to 1/3 of the total landmass for trend calculations. The site used to adjust Alice Springs and Darwin are not used for anything else but adjustment suggesting they are not really fit for purpose.

Enterprise web dev here! I really enjoy your content and analysis.
FWIW BOM blocking you in the manner in which they did is the sign of a GOOD website rather than bad (and taxpayer dollars well spent). You hit the nail on the head when you said you accessed too much data in a short space of time. Maybe the limits they have in place are on the lower side, but if the vast majority of people are downloading a small amount of data and you are getting huge amounts in a small space of time the text in the error message is reasonable. Given they have a number of custom inputs to generate the data, the requests you make are more than likely not as cachable and thus use more compute resources than browsing the site normally. As such, they have to employ rate-limiting so they're not susceptible to DoS attacks and the like.
For some comparison, if Optus' unsecured (🤦‍♂) endpoint also employed rate-limiting in a similar fashion there would be a lot less user information out in the open.
Keep on smashing out the good vids mate!

I looked into changes in annual rainfall in the south west of WA, as we've been told that the region has been drying out over the last 50 years. After looking at historical rainfall tallies of numerous coastal locations in the region it became apparent they weren't drying out, which would mean the same quantity of moisture was on the coast and the inland areas had obviously been drier. Given that the SW of WA is predominately farmland and has been cleared over the years, it would mean there is less transpiration and thus lower humidity levels which would reduce potential of precipitation

What's interesting is they push this narrative (water department) on ads for Perth, where everyone knows Perth is usually stinking hot & dry for six months of the year (Oct-Mar) and Perth (and surrounding areas like Rockingham, Mandurah etc) have received massive influx of migrants, thus relentless (2020-2021 excepted) huge population growth in the last 30 years. The same water resources they had now have an extra 500,000+ people to supply water for, hence why they've built multiple desalination plants in that time.

You may recall there was a security breach about 10 years ago apparently involving the BOM so their security posture is probably more sensitive than most. Hey if you want more data, I volunteer to download any that you would like. If 50 of us do one site each, would that be enough data for your story to be completed? Let me know!

Certain selected weather stations have been decommissioned, temperature records are taken from city-based stations (read: urban heat islands), and the BOM "massages" actual data using mathematical algorithms to hide what's really happening with trends.

The average between Max and Min can be misleading as they could be +50c and -50c respectively and the average will stay 0c. Making a drastic and very catastrophic trend look insignificant.

This comment falls outside the general conspiracy theory trendline I have observed while reading other comments. Two hand picked datasets from a single website for one government agency is an entirely reasonable way to fire up any conspiracy, so well done.

You'd probably find the blocking was automated .. I can understand it from their perspective. Otherwise their site would just get smashed by bots all day long. I wouldn't read too much into it. That said, it seems like it was tripped way too easily and their automation could probably be better.

So disappointing, it seems evident they’re trying to increase the frequency of severe weather days too - by softening the criteria for severe events ..
Days in the mid-thirties are becoming severe, windy days, etc. Bureau of Melodrama.

Greater observed temperature extremes may just be an artifact caused by more frequent measurements. This may occur at a location as better technologies becaome available at that location. The more you look at something the more likely you are to observer a rare event. This becomes even more problematic if you keep adding more locations increasing the number of spatial observations. Hence media reports of extreme events (of any kind, not just weather) might be considered to be fake news.

I looked up sea levels when Greta first opened her pie hole on the world stage and found 1 of the oldest and continuous records was in Sydney harbour going back to early 1800s and found there was a fluctuation of about 2ft being a fisho thought must be the tides, so a week or so later thought let's have a proper look and found a website straight underneath saying how professor had been sacked from BOM after 28yrs for being a "climate denier" so went down the rabbit hole and found the professor had mapped the tides and moon cycles (which affect the tides) against this stick in the harbour that's been there for a 190yrs and found the sea levels have been constant in 7yr cycles with the tides, yep no hidden agenda😅
