IDK, Hippos have anger issues. Deadliest animal in Africa is not a lion or a hyena; it's the hippo, which has killed more people than any other animal, save mosquitoes. Grumpy AF.
As a Cypriot,I wish we had actual animals in this damn country instead of some sheep and foxes. It’d be so cool if the little hippos and elephants were still around.
@kinglyzard When you fool with Mother nature horrible things can happen. That's what you were saying. I was satirizing that by joking that the potentially cloned tiny proboscidians will escape like Jurassic Park Dinos and then cause a cute crisis.
The sculpture at 5:12 looks like a capybara. I wonder if the dwarf hippos were as temperamental as their larger cousins. Imagine being up a tree with a tiny hippo determined to end you the moment you come down!
I've read a bit about this and some of my readings contradict each other, for instance whether those were dwarf mammoths or dwarf straight- tusked elephant on Cyprus. The mouflon was an ancient introduction as was the Persian fallow deer, the latter now extinct on Cyprus. The fact that pigs, cats, sheep and goats and cereal crops aren't native to Cyprus, and that earliest forms would be impossible to differentiate from wild types reliably, yet with the proximity of Cyprus to where these domestications occurred, means we can obtain good early dates for these domesticates from remains found on Cyprus.
Were there Neanderthals Cyprus prior to this? I think they had made it to Crete. I think they’d make a good snack of the dwarf hippos and loxos too! Ty for vid!
I’ve not done much research on the anthropological history of Cyprus, but I believe the most recent traces of humans are about 12,000 years ago. I’m doubtful there’s anything much older!
I wonder if a next Zeno Clash could take inspiration from these creatures. For context, Zeno Clash is a series of games known for having a very fascinating world with inhabitants that are all monsters, freaks and chimeras. Some inspirations lie with the works of Hieronymus Bosch or the Drolatic Dreams of Pantagruel, while yet *others* are based on lesser known prehistoric animals. Entelodonts for example. A pachyderm man named Deinother, a seemingly carnivorous mammal man named Therium, some kind of giant ground sloth/tapir hybrid known as an Odonodon and some others. Fascinating series.
Uno Dos Tres - that was Spanish btw.

How awesome would it be to have a herd of those little hippos and elephants? They’d have to get along with my dogs.

Do you think small hippos would equal safe hippos?
@@drowningpooralice5505 Your average house cat would probably prey on humans if they were bigger, yet they sleep in our beds.

Some extinctions feel more tragic than others to me, sometimes. I really wish dwarf elephants and dwarf hippos were still around!
Nice to see someone do a video on smaller less popular areas of the world.
This man is so underrated. Great video!
Cyprus a ravaged landscape, millennia of human habitation has seen the natural environment absolutely decimated...🫤
We need to bring back back the pygmy elephants and hippos. They are cute creatures. 😊

If decent DNA could be found, it might be possible in the future.
It's not NICE to fool with Mother Nature!😮

They were hippos and elephants in Cyprus, before the time of Ancient Egypt
Your channel is underrated af you should have thousands more subs

Wild boar have inhabited Cyprus for 8,000 years, which is when mouflon got there. They're not invasive.
