If you're carrying a bag keep it organized & always put things back in the same place. Because if you're digging for something in a bag you are not paying attention to your surroundings & are probably pulling everything out of your bag & setting it down on the ground which gives everyone a really good look at your stuff. I practice this whether I'm at the local mall or traveling. It saves me time, frustration & money.

i find the whole beach thing a bit difficult when you're backpacking and are always on the move - anyway, i usually put some of my money and often my passport in tampon boxes or my pad packets. Men react seemingly allergic to that...

I handed my passport in to a hostel in Vietnam and they kept hold of it during my stay. When I checked out two days later my passport wasn't there. It was seriously the most stressful thing, I had to get an emergency passport from the embassy which I couldn't really travel with because of the restrictions. I had to fly back to the uk to fast track a new passport before heading back out to Borneo. I'm now down about £1000 because of all that. Don't hand your passport in to hostels, insist they give it back to you. Passport, phone and bank cards are the most important items because they actually make travel impossible/really hard if you lose them.

ABHISHEK conqueror I'm not blaming the country. I didn't have the best experience in Vietnam, for the entire 10 days I was there I was really ill, lost my passport, got mugged by a taxi driver and saw a man driving around on the back of a bike with a gun. I'd still visit Vietnam again, just make sure I have plenty of copies of my passport and never leave it with anyone again.

Buy a small door alarm and place it on the door. If there is an internet connection available there are door alarms that actually send a notification on your phone. Also place a small hidden camera with sensor movement, in case someone tries to get in your room you will be notified, there will be an alarm and you will have video footage of who got in your room. good luck!

Your videos always make my day. I laugh so hard. And learn a lot.
I will share my personal story: I grew up in a small place and to my friends going to the capital was a freaking horror movie. Thief's, murders, etc... I never had that problem. Like, if you behave in the right way, with common sense and in the right state of mind nothing happens. If people see you trembling like a leaf, looking around as if waiting for a werewolf to pop up... They will see you as the perfect target. It like carrying a big sign on our backs pointing to us and saying ' Pssst! Over here. This one.'
Wherever you go, act normal. Use normal clothes, normal stuff. That's my piece of advice. And believe me, I've stayed with people that at first glance would send chills down your back.

I knew someone who had a job in a bar while she was traveling. In a conversation with other hostel guests she told that she got paid in cash. Not long after she found her locker broken open with all the cash gone (that was stored in her well hidden secret bag inside the locker). Moral of the story: Don't let anyone know you have cash money. Or other expensive stuff; don't tell people your laptop is 2k US dollar, better put a couple of worn out stickers on the back to make it look old.

Excellent video with solid advice. Love your bubbly personality! Subbed. Totally agree what you said about phone use. If theres one tip 'Id tell every traveler - leave your primary (and usually most expensive) phone AT HOME. There are plenty of excellent but cheap Chinese phones out there. Get one of these and make them your travel phone. Leave the flashy iPhone, Samsung W22 etc AT HOME. You can have an Oppo, RealMe, Xiaomi etc for very cheap. Many of them come with big batteries like 5000-6000mAh. Do not use your cell while walking on the streets. If you must then walk into a shop or a mall.

I usually also don't bring a camera and have taken separate trips to the beach too just to snap a couple pictures. the heat and sand is also never great for technical equipment which is why I wouldn't want it to lay there anyway. On a beach with the basics can be expensive, a phone a compact camera and a kindle and if there's more than 1 person you're with then you can have 2,3 or even 4 of each item. We usually put in a plastic bag wrap it up and put it under the sand and under a towel or surround where it is with rocks when we all want to go down to the sea. As long as no one sees you digging and putting in in then you are pretty safe.

  • @blair4757

Good to now video, but as I read below from another chap, I rarely see any vlogs talk about safety of items as a traveller thru the country by motor bike and how folks keep things safe when they come across an attraction such as a waterfall, cave, temple or other where the distance between u and the bike (with your things) may be lengthy. I am planning to move to Cambodia the spring 2020, but taking a year to travel by motor bike in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and if I can work a way around Burma into India and eventually after a year or so later, settle in Cambodia.
I went thru many vlogs as understand the plight of others helps to educate others wanting to make the trip and experience.
Understanding what tips others have or what they've done would be helpful, but find most vlogs just dont' really speak to these areas.
I appreciate the notes on the money clip, would never have thought, of all the vlogs I've went thru ( and there have been sooooooo many) no one mentioned this yet.
I will be a solo traveller, am 58 today actually and am fit. Appreciate your video. Blair

  • @dragonsoul0028

Guys if you really don't want to get your things stolen, most bags have those 2 zippers on the big/main part of the bag and put all your your stuff that you definitely don't want losing eg. money, your wallet, laptop, phone, ect then but a lock, either with a key or combination but if you get the key one, have your key on a chain always on your neck underneath your top at all times. Put your lock through the 2 zippers and no one can get in :) my technique at the beach is to get a chain lock and lock it to my umbrella and cover it with my towel and stuff. Put your unnecessary stuff in the other places of the bag, eg. small amounts of food, cheap makeup and jewelry, and just anything small that you wouldn't freak out if stolen/lost :D

I have a kid, so when we go to the beach I put my phone and keys inside a clean diaper, but wrap it up so that it looks like a used/dirty one. I leave it right next to the diaper bag with the wipes right there next to it. Even on a super busy day and at a pretty dodgy beach, no one has ever touched it or given it a second look. Not sure if that would work for people without kids, though.

if you are in a risky place (like Africa or India for example, it is good idea to buy yourself a second, dirt cheap phone, that you can take with you to clubs and pubs and to places with lots of crowds (like market).. or leave on to the beach when going to swim. I was robbed in Kenya three times (once even publicly by a gang of thugs just because i was new in town and honestly, because i'm white.., then again, truthfully i also went to places where normally white people didn't. Yet, it didn't ruin my experience and i still took more risks than most would. And in the end when basically everyone knew me and that i have been there for a long time, i was really able to go to slums alone in total darkness. As Ally says, when traveling, you have to learn to deal with your losses. If you want lots of powerful experiences, it is quite possible that sooner or later you lose some money or a phone. In certain places, white people just are overly exposed (even if you don't look like a tourist with flashy clothes and jewelry) and local thugs believe that whites always have money.. because, generally they do.. because for a local street thugs even your little money that you have so wisely distributed and left most of it wherever was safe, for them it may still be worth risking to try to get their hands on it.
BTW.. if you go to Africa, you might also want to learn something about local laws, so that you wouldn't fall victim to different form of robbery.. a corrupt policemen who could try to exploit your possible ignorance about their laws.

acajudi100 yea i know.. one local talked how he was robbed on gunpoint.. but a stranger, someone different, someone clearly a traveller will absolutely attract more thieves. Thats why im saying that it is best to learn how to protect yourself and your belongings (not with fighting prowess but with wisdom).. and to become quickly known by locals

    • @dreamingrightnow1174
      @dreamingrightnow1174 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

sumwhatparanoid _ I can't speak for him specifically, but when I read that, I thought of what other travelers have told me about, in this case, Colombia. Several people who love Colombia and have lived there for several years have stories to tell about local police demanding money on the street. Basically a robbery by police. The advice that others gave about this relatively well known phenomenon, is to insist on going to the police station or even jail. In Medellin that seems to work because they don't want it to be known wht they're doing.

The reason you've never seen a traveller using a money belt is probably because they go under your clothing. You wouldn't see someone wearing a money belt even if you were looking for it, that's kind of the whole point of a money belt. Its not a 'fanny pack'. lol. Just saying.

My mother and I have to travel with several medications, some of which are controlled substances. So we each have a lock case we put the bottles in that we then lock inside the suitcase. If they want to find that, they are going to have to be obvious about it. We take the meds in the bottles in case we should need to show what they are and that they are ours. Locks only keep honest people honest, but at least it makes a thief take longer and leave evidence of the theft.

I had my food stolen by the night staff at Paris at a crappy hostel years back. That was luckily the only thing I've had taken from me on many trips abroad.

travel insurance is often for no more than 30 days so really is useless for long term travel.,. best thing is to not leave computers out of view as they will get stolen even in Singapore which seems so safe but even on Orchard Road there are plenty of thieves usually travelling in from Malaysia and Indonesia roaming the streets.. the street cleaners in Singapore too will steal your things if not tied to your body..

Keep a travel card with some money on it somewhere that is not your wallet or in your main suitcase/backpack so if you loose your wallet with your bank card you have some means of getting cash.
Keep a $100US bill hidden somewhere on you also, this can help in most emergencies. Even if you have a secure hotel room never leave something valuable in a obvious place. A lot of thieves are opportunist and wont spend lots of time looking for things.
If you have a lot of cash don't keep it in your wallet, so when you pay for small thing's people don't see you flicking through a big wad of cash just some smaller notes. Top up your wallet every so often in a private place.
Just be aware, not paranoid. Realize that in a developing country items you may take for granted while your careless are extremely valuable to others and can make a huge difference to they're lives.

if your are photographer then you insure your camera gear separately, i like rangefinder and old SLR cameras for travel use prey anti theft on your pc and use older computer gear on your travels.

Don't bring your laptop unless you work with it. Really it's not worth it and if you bring something fancy like a MacBook someone might want it.
Also, ir happens a lot to Americans and some Europeans that come from small towns or suburbs that are safe or where no one really walks anywhere and then they go to Mexico City, Buenos Aires or a big city in Europe and they lose stuff because they are not used to walking on a big city and staying alert.

Great tips and vid! I once had a spare wallet in my bag (didn't know it was there) and friends tried to thieve it as a joke, but after days of me not asking about it they opened it to find it empty and were like "why do you carry around a fake wallet" and I thought hey thats a good idea. So now I leave a fake wallet in my bag in the most obvious place. Quick question? How did you like Philippines compared to Thailand/Indo. We are thinking about going there next but also really want to go back to Bali (love Bali, love Bali, love Bali), but have the "FOMO of seeing something new syndrome"

Never try to hide your valuables under the car seat, in a glove box, or in the trunk. ALWAYS keep your valuables with you. Your car is not a safe place for money or credit cards. Further, leave the car unlocked, ideally with a window down. Thieves do not want your car. They want your money.

Your right about the people who are from said country are the most likely to steal from you in the hostel, there either down on there luck or close to broke, I will also throw in long hostel stayers that are volunteering at a hostel for a free room are more likely to steal, they are also the ones who are more likely to raid the free food bin, not saying all of them will steal just be cautious.

Why does having a photo copy of the passport help getting a new one. When I lost mine and had to get a new one in Italy all I did was tell them my ssn and then we took a new photo and I had to pay for a new passport which I am sure you can't get around that expense
