Hi Shayla, Great video. However, we just wanted to let you know you are never too old to stay in hostels. Our oldest guest was an 83-year-old woman from Australia who set out to travel the world solo after her husband died. :-( But she was friggin awesome!. One night she came to the common room and cleared her voice to get everyone's attention. She then said, "Excuse me, it's 930 and it's time for my nightcap. I'm going to the pub. I would like an escort, preferably male. The whole common room escorted her to the pub. About a half an hour later a young tall Swedish man escorted her back to the hostel and then went back to join the gang. Never too old to be young at heart.
I'm in my sixties. I've stayed in hostels in the 1970s, 80s, 90s and 2000s. Shortly my wife and I will be traveling in Portugal renting a VW camper. The only change is I'm less likely to stay in a hostel in Cambodia but will definitely stay in one in New Zealand.
🙌🙌🙌 I want to do this too!! But do you hang with the 20 year olds? I feel like when you’re in your 30s you have this weird desire to hang with them and also to go to bed early lol In your sixties you can hang and pregame then go to bed when they go out. You however might be one of those energizer bunnies! I’m 28 and love a 9pm Bed time 🙈
Hey John, when are you planning on being here? Get in touch and I can give you a few tips for different locations as far as wild camping, restaurants, wine tours, etc.
John H: y'all are awesome. I've never done hostel and was thinking I'm too old 🤓 my wife on the other hand, wouldn't do it. John S: not being snooty but she's Shayla 🤓
Hostels are the best!! I'm a musician and I love hostels so much that I'm now doing an entire tour performing only in hostels! I just posted the first video from the tour, which was in New York City! It's been such an amazing experience.
I volunteered at a hostel for 3 weeks in Budapest, and what I learned was that most people don't want to take your things because that means they have to carry it and deal with it the rest of their trip. Also learned that hostel pillows can be pretty nasty... so a light pillow case is good too.
I love how you have this super chill cool aunt vibe, or for me, like an older cousin :) Great video, thanks for the tips. I'm leaving on a trip tomorrow.
I totally agree with the sleeping bag liner. Usually the people I meet don't know that. It's the small things that make a big difference. I recently started my travel few months ago and sleeping in hostel beds usually make me itch. It got frustrating and super exhausting because I barely get enough sleep then my best friend gave me the Brave Era travel sheet she found in Amazon. And wow! It has changed my life entirely in terms of getting enough rest in every bed I sleep on. Plus, I treated it with an insect repellent and bed bugs are away. Just wanted to share. By the way, I love your tips. your video is hilarious too. Happy travels!
I just hosteled all over Iberia for a month, and I'm in my 50s. It's not just for folks in their 20s. Also, most hostels dont allow sleeping bag liners any more, because they found that's how bedbugs get from one hostel to the next. I had zero bugs in a month.
This video really helped me. I'm going to Alaska this summer and actually just got in touch with a hostel where I'll be. I'm arriving a little before summer actually starts, so they asked me if I would be willing to help set up in exchange for free accommodations. Definitely not something that could happen with everyone, but since they wont be open yet that really helps with keeping my stuff safe
good on you. I am in my 40s and I still stay at hostels. I do look young so most people think in my late 20s but still it doesn't make a difference. I decided to splurge in Santorini and paid for a nice hotel. It was so boring, EVERYONE was in couples on their honeymoon ha ha
Omg I was like 17 on my first solo trip and not only was my across bunk buddy getting lucky... they kept turning on and off the lights and while I had earphones in, i could hear their turtle-like moans... I was horrified .
Definitely would go for hostels if I am in EUROPE! Honestly, the best thing about solo traveling is going back to sleep and not sleeping alone after exploring alone the whole day.
Im stayed over 30 hostels throughout the U.S and Canada. Haven't yet stayed in Hostels outside North America. Hopefully soon i will. Iove my experience in hostels. So affordable and meeting people from other countries. Love traveling
About the sleeping bag liner: I do take one with me when I stay in hostels and I do use it sometimes when the bedding doesn't look or smell as clean as I would like it. HOWEVER they don't protect you from bedbugs. I've been bitten by bedbugs twice in my life and the first time was in a really gross hostel where I slept in my sleeping bag liner. The bugs just crawl right in there and bite you. And the risk of the bed bugs joining you in your travels is even higher because then you not only have to worry that they might've crawled into your backpack, they could also get on board in the sleeping bag liner. So the sleeping bag liners are nice for comfort, but if you want one because you're scared of bedbugs: don't pack it.
That's a good tip list right there. 👍🏻 Hostels sound like a perfect idea for an extrovert. You're literally with people all the time… unless they leave to go do stuff.
Amazing video! I Love hostel life but honestly at times it can be so draining. The sound of people agressively unzipping things in the middle of the night has become like music to my ears.
I've got to agree with the sleeping bag liner. They pack up so small and take up zero space, I use mine not so much because I'm scared of bed bugs but for an extra layer of warmth if a hostel only gives you a sheet. I usually only use the sheet anyway because sometimes the heavier blankets or quilts they give you don't get washed as often (if at all!). It's also nice to snuggle up in on long train or plane rides.
Torch! (Flashlight for my American friends). You know one of those mini keychain torches 🔦 I keep it with me if I hit the town at night and get in late and keep it under my pillow in case I need to get up early for a hike/early flight etc. Just a hostel traveller common courtesy thing :) no one likes a ballbreaker who turns on the room light at 3am and wakes everyone else up! Highly recommend kids ;)
Oh yeah it does but my phone battery is usually dead haha and/or I leave it behind when I go out so it doesn't get stolen ;) ..and perhaps I'm a little old school and like the cheeky feel of sneaking in late with a baby camping torch haha
Hey! Try bamboo towels! They are super thin and as quick drying as micro fiber towel but with a much nicer feel to them. Never looking back to micro fiber towels :) Oh and also: you can get plastic birkenstock shoes. They are really comfy and I got mine off amazon for 24€. Pretty sure US amazon must carry them as well. :)
Would you ever stay in a hostel stateside? I briefly thought about staying in a hostel (thanks to your videos!) during a recent trip to California, but then I realized it was in downtown LA, and noped out of that. It’s weird that my perception of a hostel in a foreign country is that drastically different.
I have only stayed in a hostel on the Appalachian trail. Which is different because it’s for hikers. But I would think in a big city they would be very similar!
haha...yeah it was. I was asked by my roommates why I was staying in a hostel if I am American. My reason was simple. I was there for work at the convention center, but did not want to pay $200 a night at any of the big chain nearby hotels.
Hostels are great to meet new friends. Charging could be an issue, with everybody’s electronic devices. Sex is not against the law, the last time I checked. Plastic bags for you shower flip flops. Good video, as always !
I live for hostels!! But yeah, sometimes I see people being overly worried or bringing very unnecessary things, most places sell the same stuff as they do at home if you happen to miss/forget something.
I have a question idk where to look for the answer, is it ok or normal to stay in a hostel for a month? Im gomna be travelling and working but probably wont be in a spot for more then a month or so
@@skie6282 It depends on the hostel, and where it is. Some hostels have policys against longer stays because people take advantage of it when trying to move to a city/country and treats it like a rental flat kind of, which is not so fun for travellers. But if you talk to the hostel and ask it's shouldn't be too much of a problem. 😊
I think hostels are not ever age limited. But of course if I'm in a cheaper country I stay in a hostel. I love hostels in Europe. Keep up the great videos girl
If you bring your own sleeping bag or linens you could be fined up to 250.00 hostels do not allow external blankets sleeping bags or liners and pillows I watched a guy in an upscale hostel get billed 250.00 when he was awoke by staff fined and asked to leave so check that out.....
Hey Shayla! I love this kind if videos. I haven't stayed in a hostel yet, but I would love to. I'm a member of the GLT group on Facebook because you recommended it and I love it. Would it be ok to upload your video there? I think many people are going to love your channel like I do
I did almost hook up with a guy when I stayed at London's Clink hostel but to be fair, there were like 6 bathrooms on one floor AND some of them were for men and women and there were also 3 shower places ( every shower room was huge and had 6 shower sections) , one also for both sexes and always empty soooo..... I mean can you blame me? :D .. but to be fair, do people actually do it like in the room with 11 other people ? That's next level!
Hostels are not that bad. And the cheapness makes up for all the hassle. Seriously, i would rather spend five nights somewhere cool in a hostel instead one night in a semi-nice hotel (or 14 days in hostel compare in 1 night in fancy hotel). and I actually experienced cool hostels where you I shared traveltips with my fellowtravellers. In Rome I was in girls' room and I got tipped off to a cool market place (and then passed the tip along), in St. Petersbourgh I experienced cool drunken parties and gotten tip for political history museum...
Is it copasetic to use a hiking bag as checked baggage? I have always wondered if the flight attendents would hate me if I tried to bring a full 2-3 day hiking bag on as carry on and try to stuff it in the overhead compartments, but I don’t really want to pack a hiking bag full of my things inside of a suitcase just for the purposes of flying.
Hostels in your 20s? 90% of people in hostels are in their 20s Also, they are awesome. I've just turned 30 and I'm getting sad my hostel days are coming to an end
I Will be traveling for the 1st time solo to Ámsterdam (netherlands and belgium trip) on May, Will be at hostels, airbnb and hotels. Of course hostels are fun (friends have told me) but if I dont sleep well I just become a zombie next Day, I am 34 but even when I was 23 a bad night sleep for me Would ruin my next Day, and that is something I cannot tolerate (something I guess I am going to find in hostels) , gonna be 3 days in hostels and 2 on hotels(or airbnb)
Never London, yes Italy. My best advice is always ask a bartender or server. But in Italy Venice we did the water taxis a TON of tourists but awesome. And took a train through Tuscany and it legit looked like the paintings!
I kinda did too at 27 but ended up having a good time. I think you just have to know you’re not going to hang with the 21 year olds and be totally happy with it lol
Oh man am I late to this party!.. Though no longer in my 20s, I remember spending a week at a YMCA Hostel on a tiny german village in the southern part of South America. It was my first hostel experience, and so the most important thing I learned, was to be open minded. Seems silly, but it's important, because while my first few days were miserable, towards the end it was incredible fun. Went from expecting privacy and getting none of it, to relating to others, meeting people from around the world. Especially now in this non-personal over-polymerated world, I hope everyone gets a chance to live (even for a couple of days) in a semi social environment like that. And it's the salt of foreign traveling. Gives you a side of the location only locals get to see. (PS: I do love me some nice hoteling too).
Soon I will travel solo to Indonesia & South Korea I want to be In a hostel to make friends but I know myself I cannot co that cuz I am a shy person, I hate this part of me :')
The fun part of traveling is no one else knows you. Being shy is 100% you’ll find what works for you. And in a hostel people are super open to meeting people!
Thanks! I’m trying! I’m hoping to head overseas in 2020 by the latest & just try to stay gone as long as possible. I’m trying to take a lot tips on how not to be a target in some countries though. I know you posted a video but did you have anymore?
i’m 18 nearly 19 and whenever i go to hostels usually i’m the youngest and everyone is shocked i’m travelling alone, everyone else seems to be in their 20s. makes me scared that in a year or 2 i’ll be considered old in a hostel!! 😕
Oh my goodness girl please do not get your birks wet. That deteriorates the leather and cork and they will not last ad long as they should. I suggest a pair of chacos, they are 100% water proof and dry 10x faster.
Buy the waterproof ones they are cheaper and I think at least 90% as comfortable. I adore them and am on my second pare because I wear them everywhere.
oh wow Ive never caught you this early. This is good. This is what I was asking about when I emailed you. Great video as i'm sure most have never stayed in a hostel. How easy is it to get a refund though if you do find bedbugs? and how hard is it to find another one or are they everywhere? Of course I winced really hard when you were talking about 15+ people coed hostel rooms. I mean you had trouble with guys coming up to your tent on the Appalachian trail. You didn't have a ton of guys trying to cop a feel in those places? Tons of good info and a great ending @8:32 lol
Eh not super easy but if there are bed bugs.. they might try and put you in a different room instead (I’d probably do it). Finding another place can be easy as long as it’s not at midnight. Hostelworld.com is soooo great for finding hostels and getting reviews. If there has been bed bugs, you’d know about it!
Honestly, I wouldn’t get too caught up on the whole bedbug possibility thing - I’ve stayed in hostels all around the world (mostly central and South America) and have never encountered any bedbug issues. Unless it’s a complete rundown, 2 star rating hostel, I feel it’s pretty unlikely. Also, the dorm sizes and prices vary a lot, depending on which country and continent you’re in. The norm here in South America is around 8/10/12 people mixed dorms as the super el cheapo option but for a few more pesos you can always go for the 4 person girls dorm with an ensuite bathroom ;) generally speaking, guys are not gonna grope and harass you in a hostel environment - travellers respect other travellers (99% of the time). Hostels provide a really great atmosphere for budget travellers and a great way to make new international friends ;)
Life as we know it no im just curious really. I like to look at something from all angles. When I travel I'm usually in a hotel not a hostel, but from what it sounds like it's way more affordable and I think the main reason why they are not popular in the US because it doesn't seem like you can make as much money from it. I'm more worried about the person sleeping next to me than the bed bugs. In fact some hotels in America are so nasty they warrant a sleeping bag and your own pillow. Not because of bed bugs but just how brightly they light up under black light.
Just watched this video twice and couldn’t agree more! 💯 Hostels are without a doubt the best way to experience a new location 🌍 glad to see someone spreading the message - @shayla 🤜🏻
So many excellent tips. I've never hosteled so wouldn't have thought of things like an extension cord and liner for bed bugs 😨 You know what I noticed? Fingernails 😉
It will be my first time this December staying in hostels in Paris, Rome, Denmark and Ireland. Concerns: 1. Will people freak out that I’m so much older. I decided not to share my age- 😂 2. farting- for sure using my liquid allowance on air freshener verses extra dry shampoo...3. Snoring I’ve never tried the nose strips...4. Freezing. I usually travel with a heated throw. Didn’t consider the extension cord, but with that in mind I might take it.
Work wherever I am! I have a couple of videos that talk about it too: th-cam.com/video/0B-loum1L0E/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/KECIm6ZdSww/w-d-xo.html
Great video ✨definitely wouldn't have thought of those things and I like to think I'm prepared 😂🤷🏻♀️
Really?! What would you think of?
Living On A One Way probably just me my clothes chargers and adapters 😂but thankfully I'm more prepared thanks to you ❣️
Haha well good!!
I agree with you 100 % thank you for commenting.
OMG that 83 yo woman is my IDOL!!!!
@@heyshayla - Shayla, we would love to host you at our hostel, even when you get old. ;-)
Forever thankful for the social people in hostels that drag everyone else out because I struggle to be that person😂
Hahah right?! I’m totally that person. I have a hard time leaving and getting going but FOMO will get the best of you!

I 100% agree. I’ve always said if a hotel and Hostel were the same price I’d stay in a hostel!
Hiking bag=hiking backpack. Lol, sorry.
I’ve done it!! They’re not stoked but it fits over head. You’re usually the asshole who has to put it in sideways... but it totally fits lol
Thank you!
5:18 was my favourite moment of this video ahaha
🙈😂😂😂
Hostels in your 20s? 90% of people in hostels are in their 20s
Also, they are awesome. I've just turned 30 and I'm getting sad my hostel days are coming to an end
Thats how I feel too!!!! It's so sad!!
Get some ear plugs and an eye mask! No shame
Great vid thanks for the tips! If you’ve been to London or Italy, what are the things you’d say you absolutely have to do while you’re there?
Never London, yes Italy. My best advice is always ask a bartender or server.
But in Italy Venice we did the water taxis a TON of tourists but awesome.
And took a train through Tuscany and it legit looked like the paintings!
Living On A One Way Venice is number one in the world where I want to go. Thanks for the tips and your awesome videos, they always make my week!
I remember going to a hostel in Switzerland when I was 30 and I felt old and out of place.
Exactly!!! 🙌🙌🙌
Hostellife is pure love!
Right!! It’s sooo good!
I’m watching this whilst staying in a hostel that I’ve been at for 2 weeks now...why am I watching this lmao
I'm pretty sure my grandma (God rest her soul) would've listened to the 'hooker-upers' and giggled!
Hahahaha
Love your energy 🤟🤟🤟
🙌🙌🙌 thank you!
Ugh your videos are so helpful! Low key wish I had your life lol
So glad it’s helpful!! Make it happen! Let me know if you need help!
Thanks!
No way! You'll be in prime time!!
Just curious- what is “that movie” you mention when talking about hostels?
Hostel here is the trailer m.th-cam.com/video/4d5_lrn9v-g/w-d-xo.html
Yay a new video
Haha yay!!!! Have you ever stayed in a hostel?
Living On A One Way sort of
Haha what do you mean?
Living On A One Way it was a big school thing and we got to choose our room Mates but there was 6 beds
Oh my goodness girl please do not get your birks wet. That deteriorates the leather and cork and they will not last ad long as they should. I suggest a pair of chacos, they are 100% water proof and dry 10x faster.
hahha stop, they're perfect for it!! But I do believe you...
Buy the waterproof ones they are cheaper and I think at least 90% as comfortable. I adore them and am on my second pare because I wear them everywhere.
So entertaining 😂thank you!!
Research your hostels first on Hostelworld!
oh wow Ive never caught you this early.
Wandering Little Red Boots thank you
Life as we know it no im just curious really.
You made me laugh; your face impressions... :)
Any hostels on the San Juan Islands? Get to it...time is a wasting...winter is coming.
Omg GREAT QUESTION!!! I think I’ve advanced to the cheap Airbnb’s and there are A TON on the San Juan Islands!
lov it
Just watched this video twice and couldn’t agree more! 💯 Hostels are without a doubt the best way to experience a new location 🌍 glad to see someone spreading the message - @shayla 🤜🏻
Yay good!!! I’m glad you agree too!
I live in Washington!
It’s beautiful here!!
Hostels are great to meet new people. Can you ever be too old to stay in a hostel though?
Defn seems like a 20-something thing. Happy to be wrong though
Some do have age restrictions but I've seen people in their 60s it's all up to you!
It is mostly a 20 something thing
@@radicaledwards3449 Last I checked I wasn't dead yet, so might be too young for a morgue
5:19 SO RELATABLE LOLOL
So many excellent tips. I've never hosteled so wouldn't have thought of things like an extension cord and liner for bed bugs 😨
You know what I noticed? Fingernails 😉
Haha you’d be okay if you forgot both though!
Haha so funny!! You’re not the first person to say that!
I love Hostels!!
They're the best right!!
Whoooa,I what hostel in santorini offers ATV rental?
They didn't offer ATV's it's down the street!
i love hostels too
Right?! They're so fun!
sooo fun but i strugle with the 30' year old syndrome too
Haha I think it could just be in our heads 🤷♀️
probably but still is a drag to feel the old one ....
hey keep it up!
What about people that snore really loud?
ear plugs!
so millenial! there is more than your 20's and hostel will always be an option, don not worry.
bhaha thanks!
So many Europeans use WhatsApp and so few Americans do. Very very handy!
This is so true! I head about it first in Spain in 2012 and they were shocked I didn’t know what it was!
I'm bringing an air freshener so when I fart.
hahahah so thoughtful!
Hostels to me well the name sounds Hostile. This is a good thing to change the name on.
👏🏻💯
How bout the bed bugs though
Sleeping bag liner!
How do u make money for travel
