yeah, he don't have much of a presence in the myths, probably a too much cool guy with nothing really bad going on. The only myth about him i know is how he was made born from the love of Poseidon and another minor male deitie.
Bear in mind that new gods were invented by the Greeks over time (after all, Ancient Greece existed for a couple of thousand years). He probably wasn’t even invented when this myth was created.
@@Lumosnight True! It's also important to note that not every area of Greece worshipped the same God/Goddess, even though by modern times the gods are considered a Pantheon. Some people probably didn't pay much attention to someone like Apollo if medical practices and/or being a musician wasn't part of their life, but would probably worship Hephaestus if they were blacksmiths.
I’ve noticed in a lot of myths that when Zeus cheats on Hera , Hera NEVER blames her husband but she always punishes or blames the people that go with her husband (even if that person didn’t even want to get with Zeus like why- Edit : ty for 1000+ likes :)
Because Zeus is the king of the universe and he's all-powerful (according to the ancient myths) so the gods never actually tried to stand up against him.
@@Inky_101 I remember one story about how Hera, who was annoyed with all his infedelotied, tried to defy Zeus but got comepletely bodied by him and was warned to never do it again so Hera took out her frustrations on the people she can hurt: the ones who sleep with her husband. Its unfair for the women who sleep with Zeus, but as anyone who defies him gets punished, gods included, they're pretty much the only ones Hera can actually exact her revenge upon.

I’ve read/heard a different ending years ago. Narcissus saw his reflection in the water and was so enamored by his looks that he got closer and closer to the water until he fell in and drowned. That’s the ending I know. The ending, even parts of the story, differ depending on when, where and/or from whom (unless you read the story) you hear the story from. Still a very interesting story though.

This is going to sound completely random, but I think Echo's plight has the potential for the basis of an interesting visual novel, where you can only say nothing or repeat parts of the last line of dialogue presented. It wouldn't be unprecedented. There's a visual novel called Negative Nancy where you can only say "No!" or remain quiet. And there are games out there about recording and replaying lines of dialogue to solve puzzles, like Alt-Frequencies.
OK but how is no one talking about Nemesis and her having THE best job. Imagine that what you did for work was just going around exacting revenge on horrible people. The more bizarre and obtuse, the better. #careergoals

Unfortunately, one part that was left out of Ameinias's relationship with Narcissus was that Narcissus gave him a sword and told Ameinias to basically go kill himself. That part was made him contemptible for he knew the damage that he can use with his beauty.

This reminded me of that time I was in 8th grade and we had to make short films based off Greek and Roman myths and legends. My group decided to go with Narcissus and Echo, using the version we were taught at school (the film itself wasn’t particularly the best with limited visual effects and many, many retakes and even the ending was a last minute dumpsterfire that had to be shot very quickly because we lost the footage). In the version we learned, we never really knew what happened to Echo after she was rejected, nor the existence of any of Narcissus’s other lovers. This video took me back. Thank you, Ted-Ed.

He did not. He did not love himself, because he said "I'll never love you", but to whom? To himself. "You!" - she said. He rejected part of Himself. So he is cursed (by himself) to being unable to love. It was prophesised that Narcissus(-ism) shall vanish, once one TRULY knows (loves) Himself. Narcissus falls in "love" to a dead water mirror, which is unreacheable. Unlike Echo, who wants his love. This mythos is about his inner inferiority complex, selfhatred and toxic idealism.

Percy Jackson is one of the best series out there imp. And if you are like me who enjoys long series then Percy Jackson would be your cup of tea. The whole Percy Jackson series is divided into 5 sub-series and some companion books. The main series is Percy Jackson & the Olympians, it consists of 5 books. Next is Heroes of Olympus, then trails of Apollo, Kabe chronicles, magnus chase and Norse gods. Rick Riordan's way of blending actual myth with modern world is phenomenal imp. He doesn't change any of the myths, he just adds some stuff to modernize it. Read the lightening thief, the book that started it all, the first book. One of the best I've read. This franchise comes on par with Harry Potter while being nothing like Harry Potter. The only reason Percy Jackson is less popular is because they are only books and not movies unlike Harry Potter. And yes Percy Jackson has 2 movies both of which are terrible and we all pretend like they don't exist. So forget about them already. We can keep in touch if you want. Well this is enough for you.

Agree with you completely :)) although i haven't read through all of Riordan's books , i did complete Percy Jackson 5 book series when i was a high school kid.. absolutely lovedd it ..i remember i re-read a couple of the books coz it's so entertaining and i especially loved Percy's humour lol..teenagers can totally relate.. 😂 i already loved greek mythology coz i used to watch the cartoon Disney's Hercules as a kid and this just made me learn more ! I read only book #1 of heroes of Olympus but couldn't read the others as it was on going series at the time i think .. but it was still very interesting.. One thing about the Narcissus flower is that while beautiful in appearance its smell is awful and rotten, like Narcissus with his great looks but rotten personality.

Just because he rejected people that wanted him it doesn’t really make him an awful person. He could however been nicer about his rejections though. It’s not really fair that he got such a harsh punishment just because he wanted to be alone
I have to wonder why Echo thought risking the wrath of a goddess was worth anything. Unless Zeus himself threatened her to distract his wife or else. But I guess in a world where anyone and anything can take offense, you stop caring eventually.
Echo, as said, was a total chatterbox, which made her a popular nymph, and she was loyal to her companions. Really though, Hera should just have stayed being sneaky like with Semele

Narcissus had a twin brother who was equally self-regarding, convinced he was the most handsome, the most smart, the most cunning, the most deserving of adulation and praise. No one else could possibly equal his intelligence - for his uncle taught at MIT. And he had SO MUCH MONEY and powerful (if admittedly dodgy) friends, and he was the best, the most beautiful, the smartest, the most LONG SUFFERING (wah!) and he deserved to be king. But you may recall that in Greek myths, such proud figures are always humbled - sometimes hideously so.
I've read this myth long ago but this is the first time I heard that it was revenge upon Narcissus. I don't understand why did he had to go through the revenge just because he rejected the love. I mean, had he taken advantage of the love in any way, that would've been more understandable or am I missing out something. Weird.
Also by 'cruelly' rejecting the love, does it mean he humiliated the person or was just blunt in his rejection. Even if he was, it sounds too much extreme to me.
You have to make one about Anteros, the actuall personification of requited love or the other erotes. I mean, this one is good, but most of us know about. The story of Anteros is interesting too.

Reminds me of Narcissa Malfoy (from Harry Potter series) The only difference was, she put her family first especially her son. Although she had chosen a wrong path, but that was etched and hammered in her brain from ages (although this is not an excuse for her wrongdoings) , I don't like her, but she is still better than Doleres, Lucius or Bellatrix.

The story of Narcissus is similar to another Greek myth, that of Hyacinth. Hyacinth was loved by Apollo and the wind god Zephyrus, but he was killed and his blood was reborn as the hyacinth flower. He was killed because Zephyrus made a quoit thrown by Apollo to strike Hyacinth's head and kill him. This Hyacinth story is also similar to the Norse myth of Balder's death, who died because the trickster god Loki made the blind god Hod shoot a mistletoe arrow at the god Balder and kill him.
Just another little havoc wreaked by the gods for the pettiest of reasons. Echo was hardly to blame for being set up to take the fall for a cheating husband! Agreed, Nemesis did have reasons behind her actions, but I can't think of a single Greek legend that wouldn't have been better off without the gods meddling.
My birth name is "Gunakkeshari". I am 22,and never knew what it meant. Few months back, my boyfriend looked for its English translation and found that it means 'Narcissus' flower which is named after The Narcissus. Only then, I came to know about this story.
I know this story, I learnt in my school from one of the story but it was kinda different. It was about a girl who was alone in a forest. She talked to her self as she is alone. One day, the Queen came a saw Echo, the Queen tired talking to her but she was to distracted at last the Queen got angry and put a curse on her, which made her mute, her eyes filled with water. The Queen felt pity over her and told that she could not speak but repeat what others said. So that is why u can hear Echo talking when you are in quiet room
In Harry Potter, there is a character named Narcissa Malfoy. Her name means, Daffodil. I always wondered why Narcissa meant Daffodil and know I know why.
The version of the myth I knew did not include the other young suitor for Narcissus' attentions... interesting and totally something apropos for the time.
I remember there was a continuation to the story, where the pool was crying (???) because it could no longer see itself in the reflection in Narcissus' eyes.

Percy Jackson is one of the best series out there imp. And if you are like me who enjoys long series then Percy Jackson would be your cup of tea.
The whole Percy Jackson series is divided into 5 sub-series and some companion books. The main series is Percy Jackson & the Olympians, it consists of 5 books. Next is Heroes of Olympus, then trails of Apollo, Kabe chronicles, magnus chase and Norse gods.
Rick Riordan's way of blending actual myth with modern world is phenomenal imp. He doesn't change any of the myths, he just adds some stuff to modernize it. Read the lightening thief, the book that started it all, the first book. One of the best I've read. This franchise comes on par with Harry Potter while being nothing like Harry Potter. The only reason Percy Jackson is less popular is because they are only books and not movies unlike Harry Potter. And yes Percy Jackson has 2 movies both of which are terrible and we all pretend like they don't exist. So forget about them already.

Agree with you completely :)) although i haven't read through all of Riordan's books , i did complete Percy Jackson 5 book series when i was a high school kid.. absolutely lovedd it ..i remember i re-read a couple of the books coz it's so entertaining and i especially loved Percy's humour lol..teenagers can totally relate.. 😂 i already loved greek mythology coz i used to watch the cartoon Disney's Hercules as a kid and this just made me learn more !
I read only book #1 of heroes of Olympus but couldn't read the others as it was on going series at the time i think .. but it was still very interesting..
And yes ... the movies 😖😭 don't get me started on those ..i had such high hopes and when i finally saw the 1st one I was like nooooo..nooo this is not how it's supposed to be😭😭 ..
Honestly, the series had huge potential to come close to the harry potter franchise if the movies were good ..but alas that didn't happen ..and yea i actually didn't even bother to watch the 2nd one - sea of monsters lol

I saw a very vague summary of this story in the "What is narcissism?" Ted-ED video. Nice to see the whole thing! I genuinely hope everyone who had been rejected by him had fallen in love with someone who cared for them. Well, I guess this is mythology, so if they didn't I can just imagine they did! Lol.
It's not the "whole thing" though - they mixed together several myth sotries that have been about in Roman and Greek times
One thing about the Narcissus flower is that while beautiful in appearance its smell is awful and rotten, like Narcissus with his great looks but rotten personality.

Just because he rejected people that wanted him it doesn’t really make him an awful person. He could however been nicer about his rejections though. It’s not really fair that he got such a harsh punishment just because he wanted to be alone

I have to wonder why Echo thought risking the wrath of a goddess was worth anything. Unless Zeus himself threatened her to distract his wife or else. But I guess in a world where anyone and anything can take offense, you stop caring eventually.
Echo, as said, was a total chatterbox, which made her a popular nymph, and she was loyal to her companions. Really though, Hera should just have stayed being sneaky like with Semele

Narcissus had a twin brother who was equally self-regarding, convinced he was the most handsome, the most smart, the most cunning, the most deserving of adulation and praise. No one else could possibly equal his intelligence - for his uncle taught at MIT. And he had SO MUCH MONEY and powerful (if admittedly dodgy) friends, and he was the best, the most beautiful, the smartest, the most LONG SUFFERING (wah!) and he deserved to be king. But you may recall that in Greek myths, such proud figures are always humbled - sometimes hideously so.
I've read this myth long ago but this is the first time I heard that it was revenge upon Narcissus. I don't understand why did he had to go through the revenge just because he rejected the love. I mean, had he taken advantage of the love in any way, that would've been more understandable or am I missing out something. Weird.
Also by 'cruelly' rejecting the love, does it mean he humiliated the person or was just blunt in his rejection. Even if he was, it sounds too much extreme to me.

Edit: Okay, so it seems that most men in Ancient Greece actually were "that kind of guy", in some capacity.
He was too seductive, handsome and alluring.
This was ancient Greece. It was considered preferable to get with other men, getting with women was a chore necessary to keep the human race going

Honestly i feel bad for Narcissus. Imagine dying because you did not like anybody. All of those people who dyed from rejecting are shallow and do not know what the world is.
Reminds me of Narcissa Malfoy (from Harry Potter series) The only difference was, she put her family first especially her son. Although she had chosen a wrong path, but that was etched and hammered in her brain from ages (although this is not an excuse for her wrongdoings) , I don't like her, but she is still better than Doleres, Lucius or Bellatrix.
Agrred. I do think she's very smart. She went into the death eater fold via Lucius, but never joined it. So she got the best of both sides and would always have a clean hand. There are many more examples but this comment would be a novel if a delved into all of them XD

The story of Narcissus is similar to another Greek myth, that of Hyacinth. Hyacinth was loved by Apollo and the wind god Zephyrus, but he was killed and his blood was reborn as the hyacinth flower. He was killed because Zephyrus made a quoit thrown by Apollo to strike Hyacinth's head and kill him. This Hyacinth story is also similar to the Norse myth of Balder's death, who died because the trickster god Loki made the blind god Hod shoot a mistletoe arrow at the god Balder and kill him.
Zephyrus: "If I can't have you, no one will!"
Just another little havoc wreaked by the gods for the pettiest of reasons. Echo was hardly to blame for being set up to take the fall for a cheating husband! Agreed, Nemesis did have reasons behind her actions, but I can't think of a single Greek legend that wouldn't have been better off without the gods meddling.
Narcissus did not fall in love with himself, he thought it was someone else.
And so it is with us and our technology, or extensions of ourselves.

I am 22,and never knew what it meant.
Few months back, my boyfriend looked for its English translation and found that it means 'Narcissus' flower which is named after The Narcissus.
Only then, I came to know about this story.
I know this story, I learnt in my school from one of the story but it was kinda different. It was about a girl who was alone in a forest. She talked to her self as she is alone. One day, the Queen came a saw Echo, the Queen tired talking to her but she was to distracted at last the Queen got angry and put a curse on her, which made her mute, her eyes filled with water. The Queen felt pity over her and told that she could not speak but repeat what others said. So that is why u can hear Echo talking when you are in quiet room

The version of the myth I knew did not include the other young suitor for Narcissus' attentions... interesting and totally something apropos for the time.
