An interesting note is that many of the tellings of the myth state that there's no-one there forcing Sisyphus to roll the boulder. He's choosing to do so out of pride. If he ever stops, the Gods win. So long as he keeps pushing, he'll never lose.

I also heard another version where although he's not forced, Sisyphus is told that if he can successfully roll the boulder up the hill, he would be allowed to leave the underworld

@@emberhermin52 no by the of sisphus he has alot of pride and he's always shared to outsmart the gods. Him stopping is letting the gods win and even now. He's not being tortured at all but he's choosing to do it to prove a point to the gods. Like they said once he stops the gods win.

I kinda like how in the game Hades, You can encounter Sisyphus taking a break from his punishment while the furies aren't watching. and have a quick chat, he's got a lot of muscle from rolling the boulder (which has a face and is named Bouldy) and he sees his eternal punishment as a great workout.

I like Stephen fry’s telling, in which he implies that Sisiphus had a choice between the Elysium (haven of some sorts) or bring a boulder to the top of the mountain, and then he could be immortal and king of man. So Sisiphus chose the bring the boulder to the top of the mountain. What makes this interesting is that Sisiphus really thinks he can do this, and each time he fails he doesn’t care: he just keeps going thinking that, one day, he might just make it.
It tells a tale about human never ending optimism, even when you might as well give up.

I love this video so much, it’s the *prime* of entertainment on TH-cam, it’s frees me of my guilt and sadness and makes me ask why this mortal *prison holds me* . Whenever this video *visits* my recommended i *indeed* click on it. I can’t *sleep long enough* without this video. It makes me ascend to the *kingdom of heaven* and makes me *forget my name* . And I never *remember* it, no matter how *eager* I am. Whenever I see this my *blood starts staining my hands* . And I become *curious about my skills* , even if I’m a mere *weapon* . It makes me question if I can *tear down cities* and *crush heavenly armies* . This video always does as an amazing *appetizer* to those questions. Even though I am a *child of man* this video makes me see past the times when I *die* . Whenever I watch this video I see the answers to the greatest questions of man and I go *”yes, that’s it!”* . All my greatest problems are *gone* as I *destroy* them. No matter how much *this will hurt* when I watch this video I *can’t escape* that feeling. This video is still so great I want it to always *keep ‘em coming* and even when I fail I pat myself on the back and say *nice try* . And when this video ends I always say *so ends the times of this video* , *a fitting end, to a video definied by futile struggle* , *it’s runtime doomed from the start* , *and I don’t regret a second of it* . Then I *manically laugh* , thank you Ted-Ed, and thank you *Sisyphus* .

I really like the point that Sisyphus is the winner - even in his punishment - just because he KNOWS, that he can never finish his task and is kind of stuck in his punishment. In some strange mythological way he still is untouchable and immortal. And because he knows that the rock will always roll down, he can go after his task quite relaxed. Or stoic, to build a bridge to another great TEDed-video

    • @megawolfr1986
      @megawolfr1986 ปีที่แล้ว +39

I've just read that depending on translation, he isn't forced to roll the rock up the hill. Meaning that the gods give him an impossible task, and he chooses to keeping doing it just to spite them.

The only ones declaring Sisyphus' task as futilely eternal are the very gods he had already proven wrong multiple times before. He persists because he finds his task not only possible but probable. This also relates to the human condition because the very theme of our existence is overcoming perceived limits, ask a medieval peasant to land on the moon and they'll deem it impossible, just as if you asked a modern physicist to outpace light. Our very existence is a glowing reminder that the limits we give ourselves are more probably surmountable than insurmountable, so we push on for it is all we truly find security in doing.

Fun fact; Some say that when Orpheus went to the underworld he was playing such sweet melody with his lyre that made all the god's punishments stop for the seconds he was passing by. One of them was the Sisyphus punishment.

There was this story about Sisyphus that I heard somewhere but I forgot where. Anyway here it is:
So one day Sisyphus just walks up to hades and asks to leave, now obviously hades wasn’t going to let him leave. But as he was telling Sisyphus this he realized Sisyphus was absolutely shredded and could fold hades like a piece of paper, so hades lets him go.
He then walks right up to mount Olympus, grabs the gates bars, pulls it open like warm butter and walks right in.
So eventually Sisyphus got the final laugh.

I don’t remember where I read this, but I like to think Sisyphus takes a handful of a mountain with him every time he gets closer to the top, and brings it to the base. Until one day, the mountain will be but a simple hill to roll the boulder across, outsmarting the gods one last time.

Also he isn't gaining energy when the boulder rolls down, the gravitational potential energy is converted to the kinetic energy of the boulder and then to heat on impact, the energy doesn't go back to Sisyphus.
Edit: work equals the change of kinetic energy so I guess the net work on the boulder is 0, but again that energy doesn't go back to Sisyphus.

    • @nafrost2787

@@RaindropCantabileI said that on the edit.
The net work on the boulder is 0 when it stops on the bottom of the hill (after falling again from the top). But when the boulder starts falling, the energy doesn't go back to Sisyphus, so he is doing a net work, and therefore loosing energy.

In a version that I know he wasn't punished, rather he had been tricked into punishing himself, he had chosen the option from two presented by gods who told him that they are amused by the skills that allowed him to trick death twice. He was offered either to die in honour - join Elysium - or to fight for immortality. If he would ever roll the boulder to the top he would be able to reach a hole in the ceiling and leave the underworld, but he could choose only once and never rest - the rules he knew in advance from making a decision. He had chosen the boulder as he considered Elysium a boring place.

    • @acedragon1456

Ironically enough those that made it to Elysium could chose to have their memories wiped by the River Lethe and be born again, so he had the option to be reborn but was so attached to staying as was he chose the boulder in Tartarus instead.

There is meaning in the absurd. And one must indeed imagine sisyphus happy. A man who spends day and night rolling a rock up a mountain which then proceeds to roll back down, in most cases, is not happy. To do such a meaningless task is to be miserable. However, in Sisyphus' case, he knows the futility and absurdness of his task and yet still does it. He finds joy in the task in the face of absurdism.
