In the version of this myth I read, Arachne actually won the competition, but was so ashamed by Athena calling her out. So she killed herself, but Athena brought her back as the first spider. The myth said that Athena wasn't angry at Arachne for winning the competition, it was because of her ego.
The lesson here is that gods and deities are sore losers that can't accept the fact that humans can achieve almost anything they want to. I am not praising humans but that's just what it is.
in the story I heard, arachne feard what athena would do so she hung herself. Athena then said "A skill like yours should not go wasted" and she resurrected her as a spider.
I've watched this video so many times, but only now do I realize how much this story reflects the current situation in my country, the Philippines. Almost anyone who questions authority is either killed or goes missing.
Thats Ovid's point, he was exiled away from Rome since he badmouthed Augustus and he wrote this poem as one of the ways he get back on the establishment and their tyranny
Doesn't this proves that arachne was right?, not only her work was superior, but her depiction of god was also proven correct by athena's behaviour. Anyway interesting story, joining notification squad.
THAT is the moral of the story. The pious would use this story to tell about the folly of hubris, while the skeptic would point to it and laugh at Athena's childish rage (the goddess of 'wisdom') and how Arachne was right all along. Greek myths and stories were supposed to be told and retold. They fill many and strange niches, but all serve as lessons about life, mortal or otherwise.
There are pretty much only two important lessons in Greek mythology: 1) Don’t challenge a GOD. YOU ARE GOING TO LOSE REGARDLESS IF YOU ACTUALLY “WIN” 2) DON’T SLEEP WITH ZEUS
if you know whole greek mythology , most of the gods are salty. thats why i liked kratos, hence my name means zeus slaughter...throw back to kratos killing zeus.
side note: Athena wasn't mad that she lost, but at the way her and the Gods were portrayed; so she flicked a pang of guilt on Arachne's head. However, the guilt was too much and Arachne committed suicide, so Athene, who felt pity, turned her into a spider. There's many retellings tho.
There is one thing they did not mention...when they had finished the competition Arachne said that she did way better, then Athena saw wise to punish her..and that is why she turned her into a spider.
honestly the representation of the gods Arachne did was sooooo true and realistic. if i was her place I would've did that too zeus and posidon should always be represented in a bad way.
No you wouldn't. You're staring down the barrel of a literal goddess who will punish you for blasphemy and expect to win by portraying her family like that...and get a happy ending? Also also in the greek version athena just breaks arachne's loom over arachne's head and transformed her into a spider after she hung herself.

There’s also another version where Athena spoke politely(in a disguise) to Arachne but Arachne was talking about how the goddess Athena could hardly do anything half as fine as hers. Athena got agitated and did the weave off thing. Arachne also did all those same things in the weave off from this vid. Athena admitted that there was no flaw in Arachne’s weaving but the things she portrayed angered her so she tore up the weave. Then she threw the loom at arachne’s head bc she couldn’t control her rage. (Here’s where it differs) arachne realised she messed up big time and grabbed some string of smth and hung herself in a nearby tree. Athena low key cried and decided Arachne’s talent won’t ever die and transformed her into a spider to keep her talent alive. Idk this might not be accurate but it’s another version where Athena isn’t being a jealous goddess lmaoo
Ovid’s Metamorphoses is incredible. When you learn all from it all of the etymologies of words we use today, mythological origins of symbols we take for granted, the amount of art that is inspired by his stories. Blimmin’ brilliant!
Some gods are so selfish and conceited... Once there was a golden apple thrown into the crowd of wedding guests. Letters were carved into this golden fruit: "Gifted to the fairest!" Three goddesses fought about it and didn't reach an agreement. Who of them are supposed to get this apple? Who of them is the most beautiful? Hera? Athena? Aphrodite? At last they went to a young man. His name was Paris, son of Priam. He should decide which olympic lady is going to take this apple. So each goddess tried to persuade this naiv boy and promised a gift. Hera, most powerful among these goddesses, promised him the might and strength. Athena, goddess of wisdom, would have give him wisdom and knowlegde if he had given the golden apple to her. But at the end Paris decided to give the award to Aphrodite, goddess of love, because she promised him falling in love to the most beautiful mortal in the world: Helena! Guess how the story ends...
If I may guess, Hera decided to give her reward of might and strength to a boy called Achilles. She also cursed the fate of Troy to end in his hand. Athena saw this coming and she then told about Hera’s intention to Apollo, who reigns over Troy and being worshipped tremendously by the people. Apollo put a curse to Achilles that his victory over Troy shall be short and unfulfilling, unlike all of his other victories. The curse also came with the infamous Achilles’ Heel. Aphrodite was also being told by Athena about Hera’s intention and she also cursed the boy that he will be defeated because of love. I’m just making my own plot here
There's actually 3 different versions I've heard of this, two are thought to be deliberately twisted version to slander Athena. It all plays out much the same till about the end where what the tapestry is about and the reason for her transformation. The first is the one mentioned in the video, where Athena was jealous of the better tapestry and the slander. The second is almost the same as the first, but they were equals and in a bid to show dominance, Arachne was transformed. The last was where Athena wove a tapestry so gorgeous Arachne felt unforgivably ashamed and took her own life and in pity and sorrow for the loss of such a great weaver, Athena brought her back to life in the form of a spider, blessing her with the ability to still "weave". Frankly, while the suicide was unfortunate, I prefer the latter. It actually paints a more positive look on a spider's existence. She was humbled, forgiven, and blessed to continue doing what she loved doing. Just, for a different reason.
yeah that's the point of Hellenism, that the Gods act like humans and secretly envy our mortality. The Greeks didn't try and present their gods without faults. They understood that there is no such thing as an omnipotent, perfect, being.
@@antonisk.2165 That's the uniqueness of Ancient Greek mythology. In their perspective, gods are nothing more, than just powerful humans, who experience and feel the same things most of us do. I mean, can you imagine Christian church creating a story about a time, when Jesus was envious or overused his power/authority? Cuz I sure can't.
For the most intelligent goddess, that was pretty dumb. I think she knew about arachne being better than her, but since she's a goddess she can't admit defeat to a mortal
As above, so below. If there are beings of higher power, I see no reason they wouldn't be different than human beings: Varying from assholes to saints.
It doesn't make sense that a tapestry woven from clouds and magic grass would be beaten by anything. GreekMythology site has 3 versions. I like the last one, but I'd prefer if the crowd chose the winner.
Beautifully animated and narrated as always 🥰 But be careful with mixing up Roman and Greek gods: e.g. Athena, Zeus, Poseidon, Persephone are all Greek versions of the deities, but Bacchus and Pluto are the Latinised versions. Instead the names should be Dionysos and Hades if you'd want to be consistent.
It may be because its from ovids retelling of the myth who was a roman writer, who had beef with greek culture. So that may be why there was a mix of the roman and greek names, since the author was roman and wrote about greek mythology. But it has been ages since I read the metamorphises from ovid and cant say for sure if ovid himself mixed up the names, or if he was consistent.
Arachne: My weaving is better than the gods! Also Arachne: (Proves that she is in fact better than the gods at weaving) Athena: I'm about to end this girl's whole career
Ted Ed:”Pluto’s abduction of Persephone.” Technically, if you’re gonna use the Roman names, it should be “Pluto’s abduction of PROSERPINA” Or “Hades’ abduction of Persephone”
Actually, most of the old stories say that Athena and Arachne was equally good and Athena was enraged that Arachne had insulted the gods so she turned here into a spider.
I found most stories told their work was on par and no victor was decided. In the version I initially learned Athena killed Arachne and was riddled with guilt. She then transformed Arachne into the first spider so she could weave forever in an attempt to atone for the unwarranted murder.
@@eFawnB That's even worse. ugh these gods in these myths are infuriating. Such big egos and they get to sit on thrones and be worshiped? what a shame. Humans ain't their slaves
This annoys me, Athena is the goddess of wisdom, not blind impulsive actions. The version I like the most is where Arachne attempts suicide, but is turned into a spider to save her life.
Trish Chanyeol Park Remember this is back when humans who had power were equally as cruel and capricious as the God’s they created. (Not that that has changed, we just don’t usually use the God excuse for our behaviors as much now) Humans may not have been the god’s slaves, but a LARGE number were other humans slaves. One of the reasons they are so “ultimate” in their judgment was a way to cope with the hard realities of the time they lived in, a great equalizer to remind all humans that they weren’t in control and a warning to any humans who begin to feel “better than” others. I mean, the moral of this story was don’t be egotistical and stay humble. A parable meant to show you how to never over estimate your abilities, a valuable life lesson much better learnt at the misfortune of a fictitious character than to be put to death, dismembered, or any other various forms of wicked punishments used.

Jake O'Brien well the thing is Greek mythology often times has been forms. IE, many tellings none of which being more right then the other. Not to mention I heard the telling of both Arachne winning and losing the challenge. All still resulting in becoming a spider
One of the more horrific Greek myths because of its implications. Any mortal who stands up to the Gods and points out their flaws and their similarities with mortals gets mercilessly punished. Paints a dark picture of us :(
I find it interesting how, in Greek myth, the gods are the bad guys lots of the time, with mortals being the persevering rebels against their celestial overlords.
I always theorized that this comes from the different levels of comfort and needs that shifted throughout cultures. We created gods because we had developed an evolutionary ability to detect what free agents are and how they influence the environment. This works great when we have to be able to tell if that's a lion sneaking up on us or something else. But when it came to larger events, such as an earthquake or a flood, we had no idea what caused them or how to make them stop. So we started crafting myths to explain these phenomena. Many of these Gods we created could only be appeased with sacrifices. (Just look at the Aztecs to see how far we could take that line of thought.) We did all of this to both explain what we didn't understan and also to exercise a level of control we didn't have. Hence why the gods of early religion are usually angry, vengeful, and requiring of sacrifice. As civilization became more advanced so did our notion of god. This is when we see the rise of gods that are more loving and understanding. Gods that both gave us purpose and vindication in our own morality.
Truth be told, it's kind of hard to feel sorry for Arachne because she broke one of the most important rules in Greek mythology. Never claim to be better than the gods themselves. Then again, the Gods themselves were just as human as the mortals they ruled as they also shared similar human flaws and traits such as jealousy, lust and anger. There's also a rather dark variant on this story where Arachne wins the contest, but Athena strikes her with a bout of guilt in order to teach her humility. Arachne then becomes absolutely despondent and depressed and hangs herself. Athena struck perhaps with a guilty conscience herself, brings her back as a spider who continues to weave and spin.
thats very simplistic, I've heard that, Athena didn't reaveled herself before Arachne bragged about her skills, and Athena out of rage showed her true form to yell at Arachne but regreded it. Athena filled with guilt, return to Arachne only to find that she commit suicide and hung herself. athena finally turned Arachne tino a spider to respect her choice of hanging herself but also to let her wove in eternity. she wasn't salty she losed herself in her prime youngness
Goddess of wisdom challenges the girl instead of appreciating her skill. Yet turns her into spider after losing. What is her definition of wisdom, I wonder.
I remember the myth the other way around. Athena wove the air and ground into a tapestry that moved as if it was alive, while Arachne couldnt keep up with the goddess. Her punishment for losing was being turned into a spider to weave for all eternity
Please please do some videos on Indian mythology too! There are a plethora to pick from and it would be really helpful! And amazing to watch from Ted-Ed as usual!
This version of the myth is actually not the original, its the one written by Ovid, a Roman poet who heavily critiqued the Greek Gods. Arachne in this poem is essentially his mouthpiece, a re-writing of the original myth. The original Greek version (or one of the original Greek variants, at least) is a version where Athena turns Arachne into a spider out of pity after she loses a bet that says she can never weave again. As a spider she can now spin web, so she can continue to weave forever. While I also like the Ovid version, as it's a really interesting criticism of the mythology (As bias as it may be) think a little critically about what the story is saying here, this would be considered blasphemous in Hellenism. The Original version is one that casts the Gods in a more favorable light overall. Though Greek mythos is still full of flawed Gods and heroes, no matter their crimes they're considered divine, this is kind of what Ovid's version was critiquing to begin with by depicting their true nature (in the context of the poem) as hedonists and abusers of their authority. Personally I think it's a more interesting story from that angle, because that context gives it extra depth. But presenting it as the original myth is not only disingenuous to the original mythology, it actively takes away a lot of that important context that really gives it it's teeth. Not that I think this video is terrible or anything, it does a great job presenting the story, but it also happened to miss quite a lot of important parts of it!
To be clear, she wasn't defeated. The video is wrong, it was a tie because both tapestries were equally good. Not defending Athena, just making it clear
yeah and there are others that say that Athena won and punished Arachne for her pride. In summary, these myths change depending on who you ask so there aren't a single right way to tell them
Nileonatter It's just explaining a mistake to the creator. They are telling a story from Greek Mythology, and adding some characters from Roman Mythology. These are two similar, but ultimately different, Mythologies. It's like someone was recounting the events in the movie Star Wars, but, whenever referring to the Millennium Falcon, They would call it the Starship Enterprise From Star Trek. It's just wrong.
Interesting - in the version of the story I read as a child, Athena beat Arachne fairly in the contest. But I think I like this version better - it portrays Arachne in a better light.
Athena why are you so jelly ?? Just because someone is better than you at something doesn't mean you have to create creatures which are some people's worst nightmare !!
Reminds me of old japanese myth. There was a smith, so good with his craft, he was well known all around the japan. His skill was heard of by many different leaders and they all wanted his weapons to wage war. Not many years passed when Futsunushi, god of war himself, ordered sword for personal use. The proud smith, granted power and endurance by the gods, worked tirelessly for months, never eating or sleeping, to make the best sword there ever was. When he finished, he slept for 7 days and 7 nights straight. After waking up he wanted to test the sword. The long sword, light and balanced, swooshed through air with no resistance at all, making the most beautiful sounds, akin to a flute. The smith, seeing his sword, betrayed the trust of gods and kept the sword for himself. When Futsunushi came, he was given a fake sword. Happy with a beautiful looking scabbard he proclaimed that such a sword should be a ceremonial one, not used in combat. The smith got away with his deception, and used the sword for himself. He began waging wars, killing many people, wanting more and more challenge for his sword, to see just how powerful it was. And powerful it was indeed. His slaughter was soo grave that the god Futsunushi noticed it. When he came to face the smith, he broke many swords, constantly growing angrier. After hundreds of swords broken, he had to resort to the very sword smith gave him. He swung at smiths body. With the mad look in his eyes and grin on his face, the smith cut trough the ceremonial sword and cut the gods right arm. The blood of a god splattered and made the blade dull and coroded. The smiths pride shattered. Futsunushi, angry at him, sent him to the most northern road in japan, forced to fight hungry wolves and keeping them alive, nurturing them only with his blood and his iron. And each time, he would be reborn in his workshop, and sent on his way. Traveling for days, just to fight wolves, with nothing but a dull blade, at the top of japan, just to feed them. And so on, until eternity. This is a tale of Yasuo the top lane feeder.

and it gets worse day by day lol
Thats Ovid's point, he was exiled away from Rome since he badmouthed Augustus and he wrote this poem as one of the ways he get back on the establishment and their tyranny
Lol hahahhahahahaha
Ok, Kornbip
Doesn't this proves that arachne was right?, not only her work was superior, but her depiction of god was also proven correct by athena's behaviour.
Anyway interesting story, joining notification squad.
Yep, she was correct but it didn't matter to the gods.
sometimes the truth is so hard to handle... Even for gods...
It proves that all sentient beings can be assholes. No matter how holy
She was right but now she’s a spider lol
There are pretty much only two important lessons in Greek mythology:
1) Don’t challenge a GOD. YOU ARE GOING TO LOSE REGARDLESS IF YOU ACTUALLY “WIN”
2) DON’T SLEEP WITH ZEUS
Well in most of the Greek Myths
Zeus can’t keep it in his pants

side note: Athena wasn't mad that she lost, but at the way her and the Gods were portrayed; so she flicked a pang of guilt on Arachne's head. However, the guilt was too much and Arachne committed suicide, so Athene, who felt pity, turned her into a spider. There's many retellings tho.
Moral: It's ok to lie and cheat if you are powerful.
That morale sadly holds true...
Yes even to this day magnanimous people just misuse it in so many forms and ways and still get away with it...
A lot of Greek myths aim for the moral of "Never pick a fight out of your weight class, and never think you're better than you are." AKA hubris.
There is one thing they did not mention...when they had finished the competition Arachne said that she did way better, then Athena saw wise to punish her..and that is why she turned her into a spider.

Ya know Athena you're kinda proving Arachne's point
Edit: WHY DOES THIS HAVE 2.5 K LIKES WHAT THE *FU-*

honestly the representation of the gods Arachne did was sooooo true and realistic. if i was her place I would've did that too zeus and posidon should always be represented in a bad way.
No you wouldn't. You're staring down the barrel of a literal goddess who will punish you for blasphemy and expect to win by portraying her family like that...and get a happy ending? Also also in the greek version athena just breaks arachne's loom over arachne's head and transformed her into a spider after she hung herself.

Depends on what version you use. In some tellings persephone went willingly, though I think that's a modern spin

Idk this might not be accurate but it’s another version where Athena isn’t being a jealous goddess lmaoo
yeah the story their telling here is actually that of the poet Ovid wo had some beef with Greek society which reflects in his work that's why
Yea this is the Original myth you described
So Athena wasn’t as mad as she was in the video?

Some gods are so selfish and conceited...
Once there was a golden apple thrown into the crowd of wedding guests. Letters were carved into this golden fruit: "Gifted to the fairest!"
Three goddesses fought about it and didn't reach an agreement.
I'm hooked! How does it?
Buksbaba Da B.O.S.S it's Troy lol

Well said
Buksbaba Da B.O.S.S: it results in the battle of troy.

The version that I heard was basicly the same but Minerva punished Arachne because of her pridefulness both had outstanding tapestries
It dawned on me that these versions may be anti athenian propaganda, to discreditate de goddess of Athens...

like always, Greeks gods always have so many envy and rage stories
Oh ty I am greek !
yeah that's the point of Hellenism, that the Gods act like humans and secretly envy our mortality. The Greeks didn't try and present their gods without faults. They understood that there is no such thing as an omnipotent, perfect, being.
@@AntonisZ73 funny thing l am greek too ! :D
@@antonisk.2165 That's the uniqueness of Ancient Greek mythology. In their perspective, gods are nothing more, than just powerful humans, who experience and feel the same things most of us do.

Thank you!
good to know I'm not the only one who gets annoyed with this sometimes
Actually, most of the old stories say that Athena and Arachne was equally good and Athena was enraged that Arachne had insulted the gods so she turned here into a spider.
Also,Pluto is Roman,not Greek,read more Percy Jackson.
Moral of the story: weavers are secretly spooders.
Man the Greek gods were so petty.

One of the more horrific Greek myths because of its implications.
Any mortal who stands up to the Gods and points out their flaws and their similarities with mortals gets mercilessly punished.
Paints a dark picture of us :(
They’re all just douches
I find it interesting how, in Greek myth, the gods are the bad guys lots of the time, with mortals being the persevering rebels against their celestial overlords.
Adam Andrews when has that ever worked?
When you play the Sims, don't you feel compelled to kill them sometimes?
Mars Rui I can now relate
nootsuspicious s u right
I always theorized that this comes from the different levels of comfort and needs that shifted throughout cultures.
(Just look at the Aztecs to see how far we could take that line of thought.)
We did all of this to both explain what we didn't understan and also to exercise a level of control we didn't have.

Ivelisse Damaris Welcome to Greek mythology.
It's probably spinning you in circles isn't it?
I'm genuinely pissed off at the Greek Gods.

Nileonatter It's just explaining a mistake to the creator. They are telling a story from Greek Mythology, and adding some characters from Roman Mythology.

Moangus PIckard is this an actual legend or a lol joke?
Cat Bird it's a legend the bottom last line was the joke part
Genius!
Arachnae: I won. Wow I'm good
Athena: STILL WAITING FOR YOU TO SAY "THANK GOD I WON"
gods"
Arachne: exists
Athena: *no*
🤣
So another version was
Arachne lost then refused and wanted to hang herself with the cloths nearby. Then athena refused to let her die in that dishonorable way and turned her into a spider to prevent her from dying
Bian Chang yep and then she used a string to remind herself that arachne was still good at weaving
I ever heard that too.
That seems way better
It's the "but I thought Athena was a good god" version.
I like this version better.
