Still insane to think these were the same people who worked on Sonic 3D Blast, which was held back by releasing on both Genesis and Saturn and could have been so much more as a Saturn exclusive. As well as Sonic R, Toy Story for SNES, Genesis and PC, Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue, Crash Bandicoot: Wrath of Cortex, Crash Twinsanity, Super Monkey Ball Adventure and their final non-lego game, Bayformers: The game. I really enjoyed the original Lego Star Wars because as you progressed through the game and unlocked more characters, Dexter's Diner would gradually become a melting pot of characters from the the prequel trilogy and all the different heroes and villains would have a massive brawl in the parking lot.
I feel like that melting pot aspect has been lost in newer games. I'd dearly appreciate the option to make custom levels with any characters and settings of choice.

Having grown up with only the DS version of Complete Saga, I was impressed with it when I got the Wii version and realized how well they ported the gameplay and even level design to the DS. Of course there's really not much reason to go back to it now that the console and PC versions are so easy to get, but for a kid at the time the DS version really was a good time.

    • @Conorator

@@SonicBoone56 Mumble mode is just replacing voice lines with gibberish, similar to Crazy Dave from the Plants Vs. Zombies series. Old LEGO games conveyed the meaning of voice lines with physical props and gestures, and rarely had long voice lines, just short grunts and maybe a scream or two. The Skywalker Saga's mumble mode fails to capture the feel of the old LEGO games, which I feel reveals that Traveller's Tales never intentionally created that feel for the LEGO games, it was just a byproduct of their decision to not include full voice acting.

Definitely preferred the og - the Skywalker Saga's approach of 'here's a big open hub; go explore, then carry on with the story' just isn't as fun as feeling like you're actually *playing* the story of star wars (in lego form) like you do in the old games. Like you say, I ended up mostly running between checkpoints with the occasional dull boss fight and optional puzzle.

I've spent a solid 10 hours of my total playtime just wandering around with Luke, collecting kyber bricks and imagining he's on some sort of journey to discover the Force and vanquish the empire and it's really fun. But I totally see why someone like you would prefer The Complete Saga, it works better as a linear experience and honestly the multiplayer is so much more fun in that game than it is in TSS.

    Great video!
For the next video it might be worth it to also include the original Lego Star Wars game: "Lego Star Wars: The Video Game". This game only included episodes 1-3, and for the most part was later ported into the The Complete Saga, however there are quite a few changes made.
For example the Pod racing level was quite a bit different in the original level where you had a timer for each section which was removed in the Complete Saga version, they also removed the instant restart after dying, in the complete saga you can just continue. This made the original quite a bit harder.
In Episode II there are quite a lot more changes, the first level in the Complete Saga "Bounty Hunter Pursuit" wasn't part of the original game. The original game only had 5 chapters in Episode 2. Furthermore, the chapter 5 "Gunship Cavalry" also was quite different. In the original game you were forced forward (and also had to restart the level on death), while in the Complete Saga you could fly freely and can just continue on death. (You can actually play this original version as a bonus level in the complete saga).
The original game also had some more subtile changes, for example the puzzle you showed at 0:48 wasn't present in the original game
but was only added in the complete saga version. The complete saga also added the bonus levels, and blue mini-kit challenges to all levels.
I think it might be nice to include this original version as well and show the original cantina featured as the hub world which as awesome :)

even though I feel as if it's more effort than you need to put in, and I don't want to ask too much of you, I'd love to see the differences between the original lego star wars game and the complete saga - I know that makes it even MORE to cover, but I reckon there's some interesting changes in level design because of the new features and mechanics added, I know the design differences are even more significant in attack of the clones, where they added a whole new level, and reworked gunship cavalry

I remember shortly before the original game came out going to a hotel and I the lobby they had a demo booth for it (looking back I have no idea why), I’m pretty sure it had the Pod Race (the harder first game one) and Theed levels playable and all I remember about that trip is playing it as much as possible.
Honestly I was disappointed by the Skywalker saga. The open world stuff felt like pretty boring padding most of the time, the voice acting combined with the silly bits gave times where it felt like we were just doing the movies with silly bits thrown in whereas the old game used the funny bits as a replacement for dialogue so it felt like doing a silly version of the movies. (If any of that makes sense to anyone but me). Gameplay wise I think the focus on the fancy new combat system came at the expense of the puzzles which I found disappointing. TCS feels like a video game of playing with Lego Star Wars, TSS feels like a Star Wars video game wrapped in Lego styling to pass off irreverence.
(Also I played it on switch when it first came out and it was completely bugged up the butt)
All that winging aside I did still 100% it so I’m obviously completely mad and should be ignored.
Maybe it’s just nostalgia talking but Complete saga is the one for me.

Another great video. Can’t wait till you jump into the Lego Harry Potter games. I still think that to this day it’s the best of the Lego games.

I remember playing Lego Star Wars on a PS2 and was so in-love with it at the time. It was a Lego Game! It was a Star Wars game! What's not to love?
I really wanted the game myself, but all I had was a Gameboy Advance. I begged and begged for the game and got it as an early birthday gift. I knew going in it wouldn't be the same as the PS2 experience...
But you know what? It was pretty darn close! Sure, it was missing cutscenes; opting to display story moments via slide show with minimal music and sounds and sure, you started at the beginning of the level when you died and sure, all the characters had only one version of themselves spread throughout all three episodes (For example, you play as Phantom Menace Obi-Wan in all three episodes) but man, the gameplay was pretty 1:1 of the console experience. I was so blown away at the time. The game also has cooler cheats than the console counterpart.

The Original 2 Lego Star Wars games for PS2 were the first games I ever 100% completed, all through trial and error, no guides, heck, back then I couldn't even have read a guide if I wanted to cause my English wasn't good enough and it wasn't very easy to find guides in Swedish. A lot of fond memories.

I used to play the first version of Lego Star Wars on PC with my brother. This was before Steam made controller usage on PC easy so we had to share one keyboard. It got pretty crowded with four hands on one keyboard, but we made do

When I tried out The Skywalker Saga, it felt too much. I had no idea what to do or where I should go, because of how many things was happening on the screen at the same time, *on the first level!* This is one thing I don't like about modern gaming. It feels like the devs are just throwing as many bells and whistles as possible, just to make a game feel complete by today's standards. But like you said, it loses the pick-up and play aspect of the original. Sometimes more doesn't equal better. I'll stick with The Complete Saga.

Hey! it's great comparison but I think you really need to differentiate the 2005 Lego Star Wars and the Complete Saga more, you do mention in the video that the space level doesn't exist in the original 2005 game, just the Complete Saga, but they changed/added a bunch of levels, mostly vehicle-based, for the Complete Saga using the second game's mechanics like energy balls, specifically those meant for the first episode were intended to appear in the 2005 game but were cut due to time constraints. They also somewhat improved graphics, changed old level mechanics to better fit the sequel's gameplay (for example, 2005 characters couldn't dodge, only jedi could deflect), slightly altered some cutscenes for the Complete Saga (added/changed scenes here and there, minor stuff) and the hubs where you choose levels/look at collectibles are different in each game (which I think is the biggest loss in the Complete), as well as added powerups that weren't in the 2005 title.
There's a slight possibility that I'm horribly wrong about all these but the quick research I did before commenting proves that my memory didn't deceive me at least for the most part.

Worth mentioning that the Podrace level is different between LEGO Star Wars 1 and Complete Saga. Complete Saga lets you play the original version as a bonus level. Gunship Cavalry in Episode 2 is the same.

I remember frequently renting the DS version from the video store as a kid. I don't remember being impressed with graphics much as a kid but this was a standout compared to so many other DS games. Honestly now that I've seen more of the new remake it kinda makes me want to pick it up.
