I had a US 2019 Atlas SEL Premium with every option you could get. My opinion of the vehicle was 180 degrees from the general motor press. Lot's of complaints about plastic and ride quality. However, I didn't mind the plastic because of great fit and finish, and I thought the ride was very good. It's a really great road tripping car, except for fuel mileage (they REALLY need a hybrid powertrain). The Atlas allowed me to finally have my dream of owning a luxury vehicle with all the high tech and convenience features, even though it's not considered a luxury vehicle. My wife's Audi Q5 Premium Plus cost just as much and had way less features, and didn't have that much less hard plastic. The Q5 is quieter and rides better even though it's way smaller, but that still didn't make me unhappy with the Atlas. I LOVED that vehicle, and when the lease came to an end I considered buying it. But two things kept me from doing so. 1) potential reliability problems. You mentioned it doesn't have a stellar rating, and there are a lot of negative comments in owner forums. It was perfect in the 3 years I had it, but I was worried about long term; 2) my short-of-stature wife could not see left hand cross traffic because the outside mirror completely blocked her view. A deal breaker that we unintentionally overlooked when we test drove it. Had we been paying closer attention, we wouldn't have gotten the vehicle. In 3 years of ownership, she drove it exactly once, and declared it undriveable for her. The designers' sample groups weren't diverse enough, apparently. Lastly, your VW dealer won't gouge you with a $10k markup like your local Hyundai or Kia dealer. I was not willing to support a markup solely based on dealer greediness (this was before COVID) just to be one of the cool kids

I have a 2018 VW Atlas Execline in that yellow colour that Zack really loves!! Your family review actually confirmed my choice! This car has been absolutely fantastic for me. It has been quite reliable and any issues that I had were covered by an extended warranty that I purchased. This car actually saved my life and my passenger's as it was involved in a multi car accident 7 months after I bought it. The insurance company chose to repair it vs. writing it off because there weren't too many on the road when the accident happened. The only replacement parts available at the time were VW parts only. The repaired car feels just like it did when I bought it. German engineering!!

Big thing that pushed our family to an Atlas was the access to the 3rd row. It allows for a car seat to stay installed and rock the 2nd row forward then slide forward to allow easy entry without interruption to the cabin layout. This point allowed us to have a bench 2nd row and give us one extra seat. The top trim in the Telluride and Pallisade force captains chairs and no bench option. Something to consider.

I enjoy watching the TH-cam car reviewers and Motormouth is definitely one of the better ones. I like that Zach and Andrea review mainstream vehicles and generally emphasize the practical. On this Video, I am a bit more with Zach on the hard plastics. If it's in a spot you aren't going to touch 90% of the time when you're in the vehicle who cares what it feels like. I imagine the plastic keeps the weight and costs down.

I was concerned with the hard plastics when we bought our 2021.5 SEL V6, but they aren’t really noticeable in everyday use and proven quite durable. All the soft touch materials in the Telluride and Palisade seem quite cheap and not durable.
We have 26,500 miles with no issues and have been averaging 22 mpg. We are part of the door harness recall, but haven’t experienced any issues related to it. The transmission and suspension could be better tuned, but that’s the only complaint.
Overall it’s a great roomy vehicle and has been awesome on long trips.

  • @Burgeritr

Great review guys! We bought this exact spec 15 months ago and love it. If you need to haul the family around, go camping, skiing or take additional passengers, this does it all. Even when it is fully loaded you don’t really notice the extra weight. The suspension is very soft and compliant. We did end up going back for the roof bars and roof box for additional space when we are fully loaded for the slopes which do add an additional $1k to the budget. Overall very impressed with the purchase (apart from the fuel economy which isn’t great)

The 2 liter turbo actually feels more peppy in this and I think C&D got a better 0-60 in it compared to VR6. When we shopped in this class, it was down to this or Palisade. Wanted something in the top trim for both and Atlas interior simply isn't acceptable at that price point. The base trim, maybe one up you can argue is not bad, but close to $60k, can't get past the interior feel.

My 21MY Atals was recently towed into the dealer twice within just 2 months becasue the same issue, the power steeling locked itself when driving and turning at low speed. The car only has 10K miles on it which frustrated me a lot. The dealer said the steering was not communicating properly and they replaced the steerling rack as well as the steering gear. Sounds like the the whole steering system was replaced... Hopefully no more incidents again.

VW can’t seem to fix the electrical issues in their vehicles. Our GTI had some steering module that was faulty, another that was causing battery drain, and then the leaks and cheap plastic breaking. Never again!

I dismissed this car 5 years ago on account of its hard plastic interior which hurt my eyes just to watch videos of it it let alone be in there. The 50K price was very high at the time as well. I don't know why you made this video about a well known vehicle? I was secretly hoping that it got redesigned but it wasn't so really other than Andrea being comfortable in the second and third row there was really nothing new to see. Thanks for the tip about the upcoming redesign the Atlas has some catching up to do. However, Germany will be going through some tough times so not so sure that will actually happen.

For your viewers; We have a 2019 Atlas SEL (USA) Currently at 70k miles. You guys nailed it. This is a fancy soccer mom car that hauls a lot of stuff but still cleans up nicely on date night. We like it very much. Feels like a luxury SUV at non-luxury prices. On a personal note: the built in infotainment center is so much better than the ipads new cars are gluing to the top of the dashboard. I do not think it is too small. We have not found any changes we would make other than to include the memory seats on lower models. The SE (Mid Trim Model) would have been fine for us if it had the memory seats. We compared it to the Honda Pilot and Chevy Traverse when we were shopping.

I see plenty of Atlas volkswagen's on the road but I think a full sized van is a better choice. The vans have the sliding side doors for better access, the back hatch has a lower bed for golf clubs or a wheel chair and you can takeout the seats in a van for even more room and load. Plus the vans drive more like a car, the interiors are better and the Atlas on the other hand has 21" wheels which is more like an SUV.

    • @jamespaul2587
      @jamespaul2587 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

What people need is for them to decide, not you. People get SUVs many times because the like the higher ride, not because they need to remove seats and haul a sheet of plywood. I for one cannot stand those who claim that they know better than the actual buyer what is a better choice for them.

Atlas's greatest forte has to be its spacious interior and value packaging. That's despite the interior has cheap quality and VW's notorious poor reliability record. I would consider a Hyundai Sante Fe, Kia Sorento, Nissan Murano and Toyota Venza before Atlas CS. Even if VW badge has so much German cachet carries on it.

That engine is not a great engine! It burns a ton of coolant and is susceptible to dying at any time! I would know we had one for 6months!

That’s what the warranty’s for, my friends X5 burnt last month after 380k km of repair free driving due to 2016s not getting a recall even though all the other years got it.

Do you think VW will put out a PHEV Atlas or even PHEV Atlas Cross Sport in 1.5 years when they do the facelift? I would love a plug in hybrid for the gas savings!!

    • @andreaspencer9813
      @andreaspencer9813 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

VW has no plans for a hybrid or plug-in hybrid for any models in North America. The brand will eventually be fully electric.

It already had a facelift, and like 3 in China.
Too bad, Europe gets lots of engines in all the cars. Hybrids Tiguans, golf’s, Passats, all with available over 300 hp too

Love the Atlas, but wish it had better gas mileage, and a tad nicer level trim. I drove one for a month and it was a great vehicle. But for the price, I was expecting a bit more.

We purchased our 2022 Atlas Execline this year and couldn't be happier. At 25.5 mpg from vernon bc to Banff about on regular fuel, and 29.5 mpg Banff ab to Vernon BC we were surprised at how much better the fuel economy was in real life. Overall, very happy with this vehicle and for just 4k more we got the 2 yr 200km warranty. We previously had the Hyundai santa fe and couldn't be happier with the switch.

That blacked out look for the US model makes it look like a cheap police vehicle. Also, according to the numbers I have read, the Palisade and Telluride both have significantly less cargo space, especially when the third row seat is folded down. The Chevy and VW have about 57 or so and the Kia and Hyundai versions less than 50. This is huge for a family of 4 who wants to go on vacation or camping, or just anyone in general who needs to haul a lot of stuff. For this reason, I am no longer looking at a Palisade, despite loving my Sonata.

The third row sold us on the 2021.5 Atlas SEL with captains chairs. We need to put adults back there regularly and it’s great. Smooth, comfortable, and quiet are how I would describe the Atlas. We have 13k miles on ours and have taken it in once for the scheduled oil change (where the did a recall update). Most underrated feature is the headlights. They are bright and illuminate corners as you take them. Would buy one again.

engine reliability is a function of design plus the quality of the parts going into it, which can degrade over time (e.g. due to cost cutting pressures). just because an engine has been around a long time, and has been reliable in the past, does not mean it will be reliable in the future.

I have 2024 VW Atlas comfortline
It has these disadvantages so far
1- water gets inside the engine room once you wash my Atlas
2- you have to put the driving mode on Eco every time you start the car , it is annoying
3- the car is rattling a lot from the doors and seats
4- the sound of the heating fan is loud
5- it doesn’t have the windshield heater inside the frond window glass , Toyota rav4 has it
6- line assist is not very efficient, try it and you will know what I mean
7- the radar system doesn’t work in the snowy and rainy conditions
8- the fan of climate control is only controlled by the screen, if the screen damaged then you may freeze or get very hot until you get to a mechanical shop
9- the engine turns off once you shift the gear from R to D

I have a Volkswagen atlas 2021. My wife had a deer in 2023 May and the autobody shop has been unable to source a hood and bumper in seven months and Volkswagen cannot tell us when they are going to manufacture a hood and bumper for the for seeable future. This has left us with a car payment and insurance but no car to drive I would not buy a Volkswagen atlas or any Volkswagen for that matter because they are not manufacturing parts to repair their cars.

We have a 2019 VW Atlas and so far so good. We are a family of 5 with 3 car seats that fit across the middle with the bench seat and don’t have to take them out to get into the third row. My sister has a Pallisade and have to take the car seats out to get into the third row just something to consider and we both get the same gas milage hwy 10l/kms or 24mpg
