    The last save. Mines everywhere, no roads, every city building either wealth or a cathedral. I am both impressed and horrified.

    9:00 my 1 pushback here is that I will sometimes road a forest, then stack-chop the forest in a single turn. Yes I've wasted a few worker moves, but I've cleared the forest faster and given the city the shields to use sooner. So I'm trading worker moves for better city productivity

  • @Spoonwood

    Don't know if you said it before Suede in some other video, but slaves roading unroaded tiles instead of regular workers (railroading differs) gets more done. That way there's more turns with workers doing work instead of moving around.

      The math is correct, roading unslaved is wasting half a worker move :)

    I just started up a game of Civ3 after not having played it for years.
    Unfortunately I got a ton of jungle in my core. I built more workers than usual (close to 2 workers per city), and in this case I think it made sense to use workers in pairs when clearing jungle, since there were no alternative tiles to work outside of the first few cities.
    A single non-industrious worker takes 16 turns to clear jungle, and that's a lot of time to wait for getting another grassland tile ready to be improved tile when your city is working bad unimproved tiles.

    Excellent tips. The only thing I query is that sometimes when I irrigate inefficiently (and do not automate) I am sure I get the spare worker move back and can use it.
    I also do things like rush roading resources, forest or luxuries when it is situational. For example, i will be immediately able to trade a luxury or I want to be better placed to respond to a possible attempted invasion against me. But yes, I think I am being inefficient sometimes in these circumstances and should show some patience! I needz the goodie!.

      I mean, from the last section of the video: Wasting worker moves is ok! I do it sometimes. Just aware that you are doing it..

    3:26 you can temporarily get the city to size 3 / 4 by having a worker / settler join it.

    9:37 you can also set 2 workers to irrigate, then the next turn click the worker and stop the job for 1 of the 2. You get your extra worker move back and the job finishes in 2😊

    Just started a game of Civ3 because of your great videos! Like it so far, but man is it a slow game compared to Civ 1. I'm 4 hours in on a normal map and barely into second age. By that time I'd have finished a game of Civ1 with space ship done and ready.

    • @suedeciviii7142

      I'm really glad to hear that! Which Civ games have you played so far. Just Civ 1?
      I'd recommend turning off combat animation and move animations (leave on "show moves") in the preference menu. Otherwise combat can be quite slow.
      Once you know the game mechanics you can turn off a lot of the pop-ups too.

    My rule has always been that if I'm going to improve a tile, I ALWAYS build a road there before I move that worker. This way, if a tile is improved, it's fully improved and I won't have to touch it again until I get railroad. Is this a good rule or is ok sometimes to skip roading like the last example you showed?

    • @suedeciviii7142

      You are correct. The last example is a troll save, don't do that. In theory, there are some cases where the tempo gained from skipping the road is worth the loss in efficiency, but unless you're playing on deity+ I wouldn't worry about it.

    Stupid question but how do you still play Civ3? Do you use Steam? Are there specific machine requirements that you need / could a new computer be too advanced?

      Yesssssssssssssssss join us.
      You can buy it on steam of GOG. Get it on steam if you're interested in multiplayer. Some newer computers have issues with resolution, but I can give you fixes for that if you run into them.

    Did I hear you right in saying don’t mine hills in despotism? DP doesn’t apply for that

    • @suedeciviii7142

      Mining hills gives +2 production, 3 total. The despotism penalty reduces this by 1.
      So you spent 12 tiles mining and you have the same yields as a forest. Or you can just mine a plains tile. It does the same thing in despotism but it's twice as fast.

    • @suedeciviii7142

      Everything I said here applies to automated moves too. The move is bad regardless of whether you make it, or the AI makes it for you.
      Interestingly, automation will avoid certain bad worker moves! It's pretty good at avoiding Type 2 errors (it won't improve tiles outside the BFC), but makes a lot of Type 3 errors (irrigating grassland, for example)

    • @NathanaelCrapo

      @suedeciviii7142 itd have been awesome if automation had been customizable to a certain extent. Imagine how efficient you could get workers if they had an automation design tool sort of like disgaea 6/7s automated tactics in battle

    • @suedeciviii7142

      @@NathanaelCrapo I mean, there are custom automation settings and some of them are actually alright. Automate clean pollution for example. But this system is far too complex for there to ever be perfect automation. They should have just done a check to see if the tile sees any immediate improvement (AKA, don't irrigate grassland in despotism)

    • @NathanaelCrapo

      @suedeciviii7142 lol its just i like programming, being given the ability fine tune an ai is fun for me

    • @munsters2

      RE:Penguindude_ Yeah, it's a lot easier that way, but the computer does not choose worker tasks as efficiently as a good human player. The only workers I automate is pollution cleanup.
