    Anthony Murphy of Mythical Ireland is interviewed by Treacy O'Connor of Straight To The Point about the meaning of myth. In this episode, they discuss Brigid - in her guise as both saint and goddess - and the crossover with Saint Patrick and the swan cosmology.

    The story of the cloak spreading over a large area is in other Irish myths too (I forget which - read them a while back) and can be explained by wit rather than magic - if you simply unravel the yarn knitted into the cloak, you'll easily get the thread long enough to enclose a large area - not cover it, but it would encircle it, which may be what was meant. Other Irish stories tell of leather being cut in this way too.

    I had brigids intercession and was healed of an issue in the flash of an eye, like brigid quickly flipped on a switch inside me and was gone… good for crisis involving matters of the spirit. Healer, especially for the poltergeisted

    Fascinating, I just stumbled on this. As an Archaeologist trying to understand what they might have been seeing and interpreting, in their landscape all those centuries ago is all the magic for me. Love this. ❤

    So many ways to enjoy and be inspired by this interview. One of the ideas that came to me was when you spoke of Campbell's wisdom about the role of myth being to inspire awe in our daily lives. Traecy spoke of 'possibilities' and I am reminded today (the day before Imbolc) that the Goddess, Brighid in this case, still has power to inspire us to live greater possibilities. That's something greatly needed today throughout creation and humankind. Thank you for making this interview available.

    A fascinating conversation! I’m working on a video comparing Brigid as Saint and Goddess, exploring what about her story made her so appealing to both traditions, and this video has a lot of good insights!

      She wasn’t ‘appealing to both traditions. She would not be given up on by the people so the Christian church had to incorporate her as a lesser saint.

    I hope someone makes a documentary or movie about the 'real' Brigid (ie goddess) and consults someone like you for the best accuracy and based on the more original texts. There is a lot in her story of how a saintly person lives on this earth, challenges, even a more pure or unique diet needed. I worked years for high himlaayan masters, I saw how the tulkus were raised and educated based on ancient knowledge, and the challenges. More 'saintly' or sensitive people born in the materialist west still have such a hard time of it, so misunderstood. Many get sick or do not make it. Wonderful to hear Ireland is having a Brigid Day starting 2023.

    This has been made confusing to push the Christianity of Ireland. Brigid was dragged into the story by those that wanted to make her a Christian Saint. She was a Pagan Goddess. You have changed her the same way you made our sacred trees and Wells part of Rome. But the Old Gods are not at rest as the world will see.

      i wish they'd make old norse gods saints too… i love that about the celtic church…. although i think it is possible someone who knows saint brig ids power said she was a goddess to discredit christianity's power….because all those 100 some odd saints, 200, or whatever…even the christian ones with nothing" to do with paganism , work for intercession as well in a crisis in my experience. the older the more grandiose!

    All we Europeans must return to our native gods and the spiritual path of our ancestors. Christianity is a foreigner's god from the desert.

    I thought the Christians discredited the old Gods more than incorporated them

    • @marge3900
      @marge3900 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      maybe their approach varied depending on locale, or the compatability of a given god. I reckon incorporation/assimilation is in a way subtly discrediting in its own right as well (as it insinuates that the story as it was before was incomplete or skewed incorrectly)
