It's ridiculous to consider AUKUS as an Asian NATO-like alliance. South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Philippines, and Australia should be the starting core of this alliance for a better thought experiment. Yes, the Philippines is seriously lagging in force projection and military assets compared to others in the list but its strategic location is a must for this collective agreement.
Indonesia is not ally. They are pro-china
Why you talking in behalf of Indonesian? Since when Indonesia and Australia an ally? Last time I check Indonesia just finish high speed rail with help of China...
Military isn't cheap, especially for a developing country. Every peso we spend on the military would be a loss that could have been better spent on social services. However, this do leave us pretty weak and can easily be pushed over by the likes of China.
We are increasing our military spending, but other politicians say that the power difference between us and China's too great and we can never hope to win in a conflict even if we put 100% of our economy to the military. Some presidents like Duterte wants to be closer to China, while PBBM wants an alliance with the US and its partners
Also, the Philippines is mostly pro-US. It would be a tough sell for the people to align to China, considering Duterte's openness to China left a bad taste in our mouths.
I think all those countries are lagging except for South Korea Japan has upped its military Budget and is expanding but as for Australia we are way behind unfortunately and need to step up and recruit we do not have enough people in our military mostly pen pushers
@@NateAussie Indonesia have higher chance to be at war with Australia than China.. Last time I check we call them barbaric and send our warship near their territory..
We have that NATO-like alliance before, It called Southeast Asia Treaty Organization or SEATO. It was formed to counter communism in the region, but it didn't last.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Ultimately, that was because China wasn't much of a threat in the 1960's. Things are different 60 years later.
And its also the past. The presence is different, so you should not count it out with different conditions if you compare both timelines with each other.
That was very very long time ago and now is 2024. No Asian countries will join except Japan, South Korea and Philippines. That's basically it. What a joke !
@@stuartdollar9912Now, Pacific Treaty Organization will emerge with South East Asian, South Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and The USA.

Your government says Taiwan is a part of China.
Not by international law, even the US recognizes that.
There is only a country named Republic of China. No country on earth has the name of Taiwan.
No matter how much you repeat your BS, fact is more than 90% of UN member states (including your paymaster US) don't recognize Taiwan as independent.
Can Xinnie Swim like Olympic Swimmer Mao ?
"nato style" doesn't mean Nato. The appeal of the coherence of the NATO alliance is the selling point, but the Indo Pacific alliance would have to be relevant to China and the South China Sea, and be a separate alliance that aspires to the coherence of purpose and relations between member countries that NATO has.
All of that is being shut down by China 🇨🇳. Africa and South America is behind China 🇨🇳
agreed, it would likely take a comprehensive treaty between all of the nations other than the PRC, with a formal invitation to beijing either being declined or having their reps walk out of the meeting, to be confirmed amongst all of the other nations before they decide to work together on the south china sea issue AND the ability for those nations to enforce said internationally-recognised treaty
@@josiptito9412 you mention a treaty and a meeting presumably within the UN that China is offered an invitation to and declines but the agreement is ratified by other nations. I can play off of what you wrote to imagine good preliminary work could be done within the walls of the UN to facilitate a good workable alliance. The actual goal of the countries cooperating together in the South China Sea is already happening, and it's relatively easy to provide the diplomatic support to assist and optimize the cooperation already taking place.
@@integralmark exactly, but the international workability and acceptance, for lack of a better term, would at least attempt to include the PRC in order to justify the creation of said eventual alliance

actually Southern Asian Countries already has a circle called ASEAN and it only needs a little upgrades to turn into a true alliance..

ASEAN is not a military alliance and the idea of a military alliance in Southeast Asia is not something Southeast Asian nations will agree to.
It's an economic bloc..
US and EU interference is NOT needed.
It will never be an alliance since ASEAN was founded not because of commonality of its members, but to ensure the stability of the region at the height of Cold War back then since the region was in danger of being torn apart by the two major spheres and every SEA country was (is) so different from one another.

I noticed something about modern wars and even wars way way before, it's not only about who have the stronger military but its more into who have enough trained men and supplies to help them lasts longer in the war... wars usually never ends overnight or in a week or in a month but lasts for many many months and even years...

Don’t look at Ukraine as a modern war. Both the Russian and Ukrainian military lack modern equipment/integration. Look at desert storm.
A truly modern war will be very fast paced, limited in scope, and less reliant on infantry. Rockets, cruise missiles, air craft, etc. it’s all about destroying strategic assets like ships and aircraft.
You're starting to get it. Industry, manpower and resources are the most important factors of a long war. WW2 was won through a sheer manpower, resources and industry advantage.
Did you know Japan started off with a superior navy to USA in WW2? What happened was that the sheer industrial scale of the 1940s US pumping out new ships and planes, quickly overwhelmed the Japs.
USA has a lot of fancy tech in its military, but they're all really, really expensive, and the US economy has deindustrialised. China is an industrial colossus, the world's factory. If heavens forbid a war ever breaks out, I think the outcome won't be that simple.

What does matter are treaties. When the Spanish handed over sovereignty to the US, it did NOT specify any transfer of ANY islands in the SCS. Since China claims sovereignty over the islands, 0nm from the island, as the islands itself is part of China.
Whether it happens in our backyard or not. We will be affected severely because of global trade. Almost every country are trading with each other. It's a loss loss situation whether you win or lose the war.
I think it is high time that the old SEATO resurface once more. ASEAN is more on economic cooperation. SEATO is more on interpolitical defense treaty among members of the ASEAN to counter threats over contested territorial waters. Honorary members such as the US, UK, and Australia and NZ can join if they so wish. If India wish to join as an honorary member, then the better. Having such a defensive treaty to address concerns posed by China and even piracy around member nations can greatly deter highly aggressive countries such as China.
There is a genuine concern in the West about the strength of Asian nations. Nope, it’s about a tyrannical dictator, nothing else.
The reality is that the US did not care about what was going on in Asia until Pearl Harbour was attacked. The West is fearful of losing its dominance with the rise of Asian nations. The idea of an Asian Century is not something they want, especially not one where Asian countries see eye to eye (and we got a glimpse of that during COVID-19 with distribution of vaccines and more recently with the undying neutrality most of Asia felt in regards to the Ukraine War).
This is why there is a desire to create camps in Asia that are pro-West rather than pro-Chinese. It's much harder though because the impact China has on other parts of Asia is much greater these days. The most recent example being the Maldives, China happens to be the dominant power in the region and so most countries see China in their line of vision than anybody else. China to eastern and southern Asia is what Russia is to Eastern Europe.

This peace an stability that NATO ensures has been good for the Russian people too. It's just sad Ukraine wasn't allowed in NATO by the US and others 10 years ago. There would not be war then. That much is sure.
yes they are safe, only NATO bombed other countries.
NATO and POTO (Pacific ocean), maybe even a IOTO (Indian ocean). So many alliances in the future.

SEATO was dissolved on 30 June 1977 after many members lost interest and withdrew.

Reminds me of the failed SEATO (Southeast Asia Treaty Organization) formed in the 1950s.
NATO should simply go global. It would be nice to have one alliance with so many members who could support each other in a hypothetical conflict against the new axis of autocracy.
World or global treaty org huh. setup regions where members can be organized. some member states like the US or UK can be members of multiple regions so the US can be apart of every region which would include Asia Pacific, North America, Atlantic, and Europe while countries like Japan and Australia would only be Asia Pacific. each region would need to aid each other militarily while the other regions could provide economic support or military support if they want to.
With NATOs problems vis-a-vis members Turkey and Hungary, expansion may not preserve peace and freedom.
NATO is for Europe. Another alliance for the Pacific nations that is focused on East Asia would be better.

This is what i have been suggesting way back in 2016.
There's already an unofficial NATO in East Asia. Turning it official is only a formality.
The main problem is money nothing else
China is currently in a bad economic state with no outside pressures...how do they think their economy would survive a decade of strict global sanctions?
They're overhauling their economy. Why else is the west on her neck..would you kill a dying horse or save trouble for a strong one.
You might also ask how is US going to survive the trade war inflicted wound. Semiconductor is in a free fall. The Chip act is not working. Huawei build their 5G chip despite US sanction. Look at Russia they are doing quite well even with US currency sanction. Who is not doing well? Europe . They are now paying the 4X price for natural gas because of US sanction of Russia.
It won’t be good, that’s for certain. but alas, nobody really has much faith in rational decisions by the Middle-Kingdom-mentality comrades of the CCP.
Remember how they had a leader (yeah, the one whose face is still on all of their money & banners) whose “great idea” was to genocide 60 million of his own people? Yeahhh..
“Saving face” is probably their raison d’etre right now at this point of their journey of fecklessness, and that could unfortunately mean any kind of wild behavior..
Don't bad mouth the Chinese economy. The truth is illegal to say just like in the final years of the USSR.
Xi Jinping could scapegoat Taiwan to distract the population from the economic downfall Like Venezuela is scapegoating Guyana
That is what is happening now. With AUKUS and the US treaty allies in the Western Pacific.
It's pretty much a fair accompli and China can look at itself as the cause. Think of the nine dash line, threats to Taiwan, all sorts of regional bullying. Countries in Se Asia and Japan, South Korea, it's natural they would feel anxious
Can anyone tell, USA can supply any weapons to South Korea but China and Russia can not sell any weapons to North Korea.
Russia needs to buy weapons from North Korea now .
North Korea has no money to pay Russia or China for weapons.
Everyone can do what ever they like but it has consequences. If China and Russia sell weapons to North Korea they get sanctioned however atm Russia buys weapons from North Korea. China and Russia could sanction the US as well if they supply South Korea.
That is because of UN agreements that Russia and China made as part of the UN security council; if Russia and China want to break those agreements, then they should leave the UN.
If China broke the agreement, EUROPE and United States sanction follows.

If a new alliance in this area were to be formed, the key/founding members (in order of military strength) would have to be USA, India, Korea, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. These countries already do combined military operations and have done so for years. Then others in the area could apply for membership (Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, etc.). However it would still take years to be anywhere near a NATO example, if at all.
"Tell me who your friends are, and I'll tell you who you are." The West and Asian Democracies versus China-Russia, North Korea, Iran. Pick your friends folks.

As I've said the past year or so, it should start with Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines. The seeds were already planted for a possible JKP alliance; not only militarily, but economically as well. This JKP alliance should be a body for it to have teeth and be respected. Maybe in the not-so-distant future, it can become a Confederacy.
We just have to water, nurture, and protect the seeds.
1. It is an Asia-Pacific membership only.
2. It will stay neutral in the China vs West issue. (Neutrality doesn't mean not doing anything. It can also mean leveraging both sides to keep them in check.)
3. Australia, New Zealand, and Russia, considered as “Western”, cannot join. (Even though some considers them part of Asia-Pacific.)
4. China and Taiwan, also cannot join.
5. Anyone outside JKP alliance can only talk to the JKP body. No per nation agreements.
6. Nations afraid to make a strong statement for and against China/Russia and the West, won't be considered for membership. This new body should never ever turn into another ASEAN.
7. There will also be cultural exchanges, easy access to workforce to boost the economy and R&D (which in turn will help the military and the technologies of JKP), and education sharing and improvements.
8. The ultimate goal is to achieve and form a Confederacy of Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines.
Far-fetched? With the recent changes and developments, like Japan and Korea getting closer than ever, and both countries are also helping the Philippines, even donating, I wouldn't say it is far-fetched. We are at a turning point in history, we just have to do this right, despite China and the West working to keep the status quo.
If we're being squished and used by these superpowers, then we should stand together to keep them both in check. The seeds have been planted years ago. Only free Asians can protect Asia. We can keep both of them at bay, at the same time, use them to keep them in check. Together we're stronger and more capable. Let's break the status quo they are keeping us in.

If it is it’s its own fault.
It wouldn't be nato like, it would be stronger nations defending smaller, more helpless ones. And unlike the EU, the mindset in Asia is very different from each other....they have a much more nationalistic than international mindset.
East Asia and South East Asia countries are not suitable for defense pacts like NATO because they are not located on the same continent.
In addition, Asian countries don't want to invade each other like European. Asians are much smarter.
The big countries don't defend of help smallest countries, they only help themselves
That's what NATO always was. Major powers like Britain and France defending small countries from annexation, while the Superpower defends the major powers and minor countries both. And Europe was just as nationalistic as Asia, actually far more. Asian countries like Imperial Japan got their nationalism from Europe.
