  • In Asia, friction over Taiwan, the South China Sea and other flashpoints have the region on edge.
Last year, conservative US lawmakers proposed an Indo-Pacific version of NATO to help Asian democracies defend themselves against growing military threats from China and North Korea.

It's ridiculous to consider AUKUS as an Asian NATO-like alliance. South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Philippines, and Australia should be the starting core of this alliance for a better thought experiment. Yes, the Philippines is seriously lagging in force projection and military assets compared to others in the list but its strategic location is a must for this collective agreement.

Military isn't cheap, especially for a developing country. Every peso we spend on the military would be a loss that could have been better spent on social services. However, this do leave us pretty weak and can easily be pushed over by the likes of China.
We are increasing our military spending, but other politicians say that the power difference between us and China's too great and we can never hope to win in a conflict even if we put 100% of our economy to the military. Some presidents like Duterte wants to be closer to China, while PBBM wants an alliance with the US and its partners
Also, the Philippines is mostly pro-US. It would be a tough sell for the people to align to China, considering Duterte's openness to China left a bad taste in our mouths.

You're starting to get it. Industry, manpower and resources are the most important factors of a long war. WW2 was won through a sheer manpower, resources and industry advantage.
Did you know Japan started off with a superior navy to USA in WW2? What happened was that the sheer industrial scale of the 1940s US pumping out new ships and planes, quickly overwhelmed the Japs.
USA has a lot of fancy tech in its military, but they're all really, really expensive, and the US economy has deindustrialised. China is an industrial colossus, the world's factory. If heavens forbid a war ever breaks out, I think the outcome won't be that simple.

Asian countries prefer being neutral. A NATO-style Asian alliance will NEVER work when its countries prefer to respect China's sovereignty when dealing with its own issues. Remember when Hong Kong was burning? Japan, India South Korea and the whole of Southeast Asia kept silent or said that it's an "internal issue" while the West was very vocal in their support of Hong Kong and supported all condemnations at the UN.
Asian countries may despise each other but they don't judge each other. The West needs to understand the Asian mentality before engaging with it. This is something Singapore's leaders and diplomats have been saying for decades like Lee Kuan Yew and Kishore Mahbubani but it's 2024 and the West still hasn't learned and I don't think it will until another "RCEP moment" happens.

This is still today as back then. Today, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar lean into China while Thailand, Vietnam, and Philippines lean into the US. If Indonesia declares that it will join any defensive pact/alliance in the near future, then it will not only defeat the purpose of ASEAN but it will also start the destabilization of the SEA region and the breakdown of ASEAN.

"Aren't you aware of the Velarde map by the famous cartographer Pedro Murillo Velarde? This map which was created 1700 century shows Scarborough Shoal (Panacot Island during) and Spraty Islands (Los Bajos De Paragua) as PART of the PHILIPPINES"
Haha I always here that from Filipinos. Guess what? Borneo was also on the map. Is Borneo also part of PH? Maps are maps. Theyre there to incorporate everything within the region, regardless of politics. Just because its included in there, doesnt mean its part of the PH. Same goes for every other map that includes territory of neighbouring countries.
"So your 1940 claims are null and void by the 1700 map of the Philippine; yes?
Wrong. China has documented claims prior to 1700. But all that doesnt matter, because the law does not support historical claims from ALL parties, including PH.
What does matter are treaties. When the Spanish handed over sovereignty to the US, it did NOT specify any transfer of ANY islands in the SCS. And when the US handed sovereignty to PH, it also did NOT specify any transfer of ANY islands in the SCS. Whats transferred to PH is documented, its set in stone. PH does NOT have sovereignty over ANYTHING in the SCS, whether its a rock, reef or island.
"And speaking of 12nm how far is china again from the island they claim as theirs? thousand nm?"

I think it is high time that the old SEATO resurface once more. ASEAN is more on economic cooperation. SEATO is more on interpolitical defense treaty among members of the ASEAN to counter threats over contested territorial waters. Honorary members such as the US, UK, and Australia and NZ can join if they so wish. If India wish to join as an honorary member, then the better. Having such a defensive treaty to address concerns posed by China and even piracy around member nations can greatly deter highly aggressive countries such as China.

The reality is that the US did not care about what was going on in Asia until Pearl Harbour was attacked. The West is fearful of losing its dominance with the rise of Asian nations. The idea of an Asian Century is not something they want, especially not one where Asian countries see eye to eye (and we got a glimpse of that during COVID-19 with distribution of vaccines and more recently with the undying neutrality most of Asia felt in regards to the Ukraine War).
This is why there is a desire to create camps in Asia that are pro-West rather than pro-Chinese. It's much harder though because the impact China has on other parts of Asia is much greater these days. The most recent example being the Maldives, China happens to be the dominant power in the region and so most countries see China in their line of vision than anybody else. China to eastern and southern Asia is what Russia is to Eastern Europe.

As I've said the past year or so, it should start with Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines. The seeds were already planted for a possible JKP alliance; not only militarily, but economically as well. This JKP alliance should be a body for it to have teeth and be respected. Maybe in the not-so-distant future, it can become a Confederacy.
We just have to water, nurture, and protect the seeds.
    1. It is an Asia-Pacific membership only.
    2. It will stay neutral in the China vs West issue. (Neutrality doesn't mean not doing anything. It can also mean leveraging both sides to keep them in check.)
    3. Australia, New Zealand, and Russia, considered as “Western”, cannot join. (Even though some considers them part of Asia-Pacific.)
    4. China and Taiwan, also cannot join.
    5. Anyone outside JKP alliance can only talk to the JKP body. No per nation agreements.
    6. Nations afraid to make a strong statement for and against China/Russia and the West, won't be considered for membership. This new body should never ever turn into another ASEAN.
    7. There will also be cultural exchanges, easy access to workforce to boost the economy and R&D (which in turn will help the military and the technologies of JKP), and education sharing and improvements.
    8. The ultimate goal is to achieve and form a Confederacy of Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines.
Far-fetched? With the recent changes and developments, like Japan and Korea getting closer than ever, and both countries are also helping the Philippines, even donating, I wouldn't say it is far-fetched. We are at a turning point in history, we just have to do this right, despite China and the West working to keep the status quo.
If we're being squished and used by these superpowers, then we should stand together to keep them both in check. The seeds have been planted years ago. Only free Asians can protect Asia. We can keep both of them at bay, at the same time, use them to keep them in check. Together we're stronger and more capable. Let's break the status quo they are keeping us in.

It wouldn't be nato like, it would be stronger nations defending smaller, more helpless ones. And unlike the EU, the mindset in Asia is very different from each other....they have a much more nationalistic than international mindset.

East Asia and South East Asia countries are not suitable for defense pacts like NATO because they are not located on the same continent.
In addition, Asian countries don't want to invade each other like European. Asians are much smarter.

That's what NATO always was. Major powers like Britain and France defending small countries from annexation, while the Superpower defends the major powers and minor countries both. And Europe was just as nationalistic as Asia, actually far more. Asian countries like Imperial Japan got their nationalism from Europe.
