China and the Philippines: Asia's next hot war? | DW News Desk

  • Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. warns there's rising potential for outright conflict with China, just after another naval incident in the South China Sea. As the high-seas faceoff unfolded, two Chinese coast guard ships used water cannons against a smaller supply boat. It was the latest showdown in one of the world's most hotly disputed waters that many fear could descend into a larger conflict that puts the United States and China on a collision course. Tuesday's hostilities off the Philippine-occupied Second Thomas Shoal lasted about five hours starting after dawn. After China effectively seized another disputed atoll, the Scarborough Shoal off the northwestern Philippines, in 2012, Manila brought its disputes with Beijing to international arbitration and largely won. China, however, rejected the 2016 ruling of the U.N.-backed tribunal that invalidated its expansive claims on historical grounds and continues to defy the decision.

The Philippines should stop giving government projects to Chinese contractors. The Philippines should also start decreasing reliance on China by slowly starting to find alternative trade partners for different products. When the Philippines don't rely on China for anything and when the Philippines stop giving money to the Chinese contractors, then the Philippines would have already won without a drop of blood. That is how you defeat China. China's economy is already in trouble and the normal Chinese citizen is already struggling including their pension system. If you stop relying on China and stop doing business with China, they will start collapsing from within.

I live on the west coast of Palawan and operated a small fishing boat and then passenger boat for tourism from 2005 - 2014.
When I first started, the sea was so alive with big schools of fish, dolphin, turtles and sea birds.
I went out to the Spratlies a couple times for fishing, and I woke up at dawn to find hundreds of dolphins swimming every which way all around my tiny little boat feeding on schools of tuna.
It was the most amazing sight ever!
Shortly after that the Chinese moved in and from then on, the schools of fish and sea birds have all disappeared, and it looks like a dead sea.

The fact that ya'll are laying down some context before getting into the latest issues. Is quite uncommon, much appreciated and very refreshing. We need to get more people to listen to you.

Ladies this discussion shouldn’t have taken that tone . This is a serious matter not a new holiday vacation you are bubbly discussing about. It’s a little tone deaf.

DW news... THIS WAS AWSOME! How often do you do this type of show? I am from Canada and have been watching your channel almost every day for a couple of years now. You are showing not only the actual interviews (which is fairly normal) but you are also including the comments of your viewers, and responding to a few of their comments. I will try harder to make more clear and concise comments on your channel from now on, as it seems like you care about the thoughts of your viewers. It seems like you are being honest about what your panel thinks about our comments as well. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Any armed conflict in the region would come from only one country, China. China is in violation of UNCLOS and despite losing the case in an international tribunal, China continues its unlawful and highly provocative behavior in international waters and economic exclusion zones of other countries. However, if China starts a kinetic war in the region, it will definitely lose more in the long run not only in military terms, but it may also find itself isolated on the international stage politically and economically because of its contempt for international norms of behavior. If China's neighbors and the international community firmly stand up to China's lawlessness, China may reconsider its position and abide by UNCLOS.

If China enacts a new law of the sea, there will be no legal issues. The old one will eventually be invalidated.

UNCLOS only governs martime laws but not sovereignty and terroritial claims. stop trying to smoke people who doesnt know and act victim. Your understanding of such matter is appalling.

UNCLOS is fishing and oil rights. The 2016 Hague ruled in favor of the Philippines 200 miles EEZ but never ruled who owns the islands in the disputed South China Seas. An EEZ is still international waters and is not considered sovereignty. 12 miles territorial waters is sovereignty

Simple point: China should recognize and respect the Decision On July 12, 2016, the arbitral tribunal adjudicating the Philippines' case against China in the South China Sea ruled overwhelmingly in favor of the Philippines. If china do this then no issues in West Phil sea.

This was one of the best documentaries into this very disputed part of the world. As a Filippino American, I hope that war doesn't come between the Philippines and China
At the same time, the Philippines better stand up to whomever is encroaching on their territory.

A war can break out from one lose canon injuring the other side, and the other side retaliating.
