Great reminder for all of us Danny. I am not a great golfer (10 hdcp) but I have learned whenever I have issues it usually comes back to basics: grip, posture, alignment, ball position and shaft lean at address. You need to use alignment sticks and/or video. You can’t trust your lying eyes!
I was a 10 hcp and slipped to 14 recently. Bet it’s all down to the fundamentals. 😅 I guess there is a reason Scottie Scheffler checks his grip every single time!! 😂 😬
This video comes at the perfect time. I was just at the range and it's like 90 degrees and humid. So hands were sweaty which made me really focus on my grip. With a little waggle and axe like wrist hinge before every shot my shots have been so much better. I too have ignored grip stuff cause any change is uncomfortable but making sure you do it correctly is going to be my first check when things start getting weird. Love all your stuff man. Excited now with remembering to get the basics correct to implement all your other gems. I feel with simple things like grip, aim and setup the path to improved CONSISTENCY is clearer.
This ball position guide changed my consistency so much! I was struggling with this a lot, especially with the long irons and woods. I have had the best range session since implementing and practicing this system.
I am 71 years old and feel blessed that you come into my home every week. You simplify instructions and make them easy to understand and follow. I’ve implemented so much and now hit the ball straighter and longer. My short game has also improved dramatically. Thank you Danny!
The thing I realized about strength in the LEAD hand and all the focus on how many knuckles you see is really all about getting the TRAIL HAND on the grip in a way that it automatically forces the TRAIL WRIST to max out in extension which then automatically forces the the TRAIL ELBOW down which creates the LEVERAGE in the trail arm which allows the TRAIL HAND to control the hand and arm that bears the force and drags the club head into the ball. Since realizing that I pay attention to getting my trail hand on the club properly and feeling pressure between the pad of the trail thumb and lead thumb and being able to get feedback on how the club head momentum pulls on the hands via the index “trigger” finger which wraps around the handle of the club. I find the Martin Hall technique of EDPU (Elbows Down / Palms Up) quite helpful in getting trail hand on the club properly. The key feature is starting with the arms bent 90° with club shaft vertical (not 45°) which allows both hands to be completely relaxed WITH BOTH FOREARMS IN THE MIDDLE OF THEIR 180° RANGE OF ROTATION. It is that, establishing the Vardon grip with both arms in the middle of the range of supination / pronation which results is a perfectly symmetrical path of the club head, what all that “how many knuckles can you see on the lead hand” also sets up but with no real clue WHY it works. Hall’s technique helps you understand WHY the Vardon grip, properly applied works when you lower the club. Locking the hands together with trail thumb pad wrapped up over the lead thumb forces both forearms to counter rotate inward ( ) creating stabilizing counter-torque and that pre-setting of torque between them is what allows the trail hand to control lead hand and club in the takeaway and what causes the trail wrist extension to max out and force elbow down and entire arm into external rotation. The counter torque is what creates the pressure between pad of trail thumb and lead thumb. If you compare gripping the club setting dead on the ground, gripping in the air at 45° with straighten arms and gripping in the air vertically with relaxed hands they lowering it to straighten arms and stretch the forearm muscles, especially the brachioradialis in the lead arm over the elbow joint you will feel the difference the EDPU method creates. It works best for me because it is so easy to remember to do with every swing and execute exactly the same way every time.
What a great reminder of how important the basic elements are. I believe that the issue of ball position is the same as described in Ben Hogan’s “Five Lessons - The Modern Fundamentals of Golf”. Keep up the great work Danny!
Did 90 minutes on the range yestrday using this to the letter and was getting 140 carry with my 8 iron with 5 yard draw. That is 15 yd better than usual. Thanks Danny for your ongoing commitment to your learning and what it delivers for your community. 🔥
Once again, brilliant advice, genius explanation. I have recently realised, finally, how important set up is. My wife, not a golfer, said i looked cramped, too close. She was right. So i have been going through a set up process for every shot. Only took me 40 years 😂. Game has got back to where it was and consistent. I still make mistakes but it’s generally when i speed up or get set up wrong!! I also concentrate on what you’ve said a million times, make a circle
Danny - this is absolutely the best Golf Swing video I have ever seen. Just that instruction about the ball position and using the clubs to visualize the (apparent) differences in one's stance is worth £ 1,000,000
Thank you for the great advice!! Seeing the importance of set-up is amazing! I really appreciate the vault advice. I have been having issues with hitting behind the ball with my shorter irons, now I see that it is probably my set-up!! Thank you Danny!!
Thanks Danny! Since the beginning of this season, I haven’t been able to hit my driver. I was constantly duck hooking it and feeling totally uncomfortable even swinging it. I had tried to make some other adjustments from some of your other videos, but I couldn’t correct the problem. I watched this video and ran straight down to the driving range and adjusted my grip according to these instructions and lo and behold, I started smacking beautiful drives (for the most part). I guess I had also unknowingly messed up my grip. Thanks a bunch.
Danny, thank you for this video. I watched it a few days ago, and I noticed that I had the same issue with my grip. It had gotten way too strong and was causing me to pull 4/5 shots left. This caused me to try "band-aid fixes" to "fix my pull," when all I needed was to weaken my grip to a more neutral grip. Over the weekend, I started hitting my shots much straighter, more like 9/10. It was a godsend. Thank you Danny!
Danny, I needed this. I was seriously starting to overthink things and became very inconsistent. I really liked the stance portion of the video, never seen that before. I started playing golf again about a year ago and was shooting😮 low 100s and high 90s. I have worked my way down to the mid to upper 80s and am confident I will be able to shoot in the upper 70s in the near future. I owe much of this to your videos which have taught me a lot (without any private lessons).
Thanks to your vids Danny me and my buddy just went 6 up in a scramble against my brother and his friend! What a great feeling. Lots of "putting with loft" around the greens and other good ideas I got from you.
This lesson on grip and starting position explains everything that has been wrong with my setup, address, swing, impact and results for the past couple of years as I've tried to figure out what was going on...I had completely forgotten how to hit the ball. I've been working on these things from lessons and videos and lots of range sessions for the past couple of months, and this sums it all up in a short video. Awesome Danny! Thanks!!!
I haven’t golfed for a few years. You were the first video I searched for a good swing review. Great points! Now, I am a new subscriber and can’t wait to watch more videos. I am going to go and practice today! Thank you Danny!
Little things make a big difference. Thanks, Danny for another great video! My grip was creeping to a bad position and causing hooks. One small adjustment and im back down the middle! Keep the great tips coming. Now, I'm going to watch your putting tips!
Who needs sleep when you have golf. Danny brilliant video, thank you for helping with all these fundamentals. Like tennis, the prep determines the swing. Thanks again.
It's nice to verify with one of the leading instructors worldwide, something I teach my students all the time (your ball position segment). It's exactly what I've been teaching :). Thanks again Danny for sharing your knowledge and insights.
Just by watching your videos for the last 2months! I’ve already got my handicap down 4shots! Now consistently playing to a 18handicap. Hopefully I’ll get even lower! Thanks Danny
Timely video Danny. My last couple of rounds, I’ve introduced a lot more draw in my iron shots than I’d like and felt like I had to over exaggerate a push to the right, occasionally blocking it straight right. I’ll pay a bit more attention to this today to see if that’s my issue. Thanks for the advice!
@@DanielMaude It was a flipping problem for me that one of my playing partners helped me identify. I was letting my pressure go to the outside of my trail foot on the backswing and getting stuck on the downswing because of it. I got it fixed on the fourth hole, but had already missed the first three greens to the left, including one that went o.b. I don’t even want to say what my score was on those three holes, but my wife had to remind me that we were having fun quite often during that time 😂 On a positive note, my 5-wood was absolutely fabulous today. Hit one 265 straight down the middle on a very tight fairway on hole 17 (I did get a bit of a speed slot boost, but don’t tell anyone 😉). I give you credit on my added distance. Having a more relaxed fluid swing has done wonders for me compared to trying to hit it hard. Less arm tension and more body rotation has helped me tremendously on driver and fairway woods especially. That one handed swing you did really helped me see the swing in a different light.
WOAH...this was truly eye opening. I had to go get my driver to check out the stanc and boy did it work like a charm! Can't wait to try it out on the course! Appreciate it as always Danny!
Great video and information, Danny. Thank you I have started hooiking all of my irons. I ha e been working with how strong my grip is as well. I use the overlapping grip also.
I had the same problem. After a left shoulder injury over the winter, I was compensating by using a very strong right hand grip. I was hooking the ball off the planet and couldn't get it up into the air. I'm now in the process of changing to a neutral grip. It's making a big difference, but it was very uncomfortable to make the changes. I'm sticking to it and it may take awhile to get a more consistent direction with the ball.
You are number #1 of YT coaches Danny. I wish I could get a one-on-one. Coming to Chiangmai anytime soon? Lol This grip reminder video is brilliant. Charlie Earp (Greg Norman's mentor and first coach at RQ Golf Club in Brisbane) showed me the same when I lucky enough to have a few lessons with him in the 80s, but I still forget at times. Thankyou Danny. You are brilliant as a coach.
I noticed my club face consistently opening on my downswing, so I instinctively made an adjustment to my grip but wasn't making much progress. Your explanation is really going to help me target the corrections I need to make. Thx Danny!
I needed this advice recently I've been struggling with my irons which was my strongest part of the game! off the deck I've gone down to around 60% & off the tee I'm down to around 45% strike rates,,, as always Danny comes out with a video to guide me back to my best, many thanks I will try this today 😊
I purchased a used set of clubs that had recently been regripped. My prior grips were "undersized", the new ones were standard/mid sized. I adjusted my hold on the club due to my hands being too small for the standard grips and now see the problems in my swing in this video. Heading out to replace the grips today!
Thanks for the reminders. I need to go back to basics, because my scores have been going in the wrong direction lately. Even tho I have been hitting the ball better, the bad shots offset the good ones. Maybe too many swing thoughts, etc.
Danny, really learned a lot from this video about the correct ball placement. Been struggling with hitting my fairway woods and driver correctly. Quick question: Generally what's the correct ball placement for a 4 hybrid?
Another great video, changing width of stance to improve strike, grip is also important, thanks again. I really enjoy my Saturday morning coffee on the deck with Danny.😀⛳️👍
Thank you sop much for these valuable tips Mr. Maude as a beginner golfer, this is going to help me get my grip and stance correct. Thank you so much my good sir. INVALUABLE
This guy is the only 1 that I would have confidence in to fix my slice that pops up every few months for about 12weeks and soon as my car back on road I'm biting the bullet and booking in and doing the long drive from Manchester because i want a long term fix not just quick fix 👍👌👍
This video is excellent for long time golfers who think they are setting up correctly but…… have got lazy - like my good self - great help - tee shots straight and know where to put the ball in my stance for all clubs - thanks 😊
That was very helpful Dan, the iron set up was the opposite of what I was thinking and I’m sure I’ll improve my striking next time I play. Maybe tomorrow. Lee Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺
Thanks for solid Video Danny. Great detail on grip. I run into one problem I seem to always have and that is rolling the right hand over the left just before impact. I struggle with that. I have always had a very weak left hand (strength) so my right hand is really strong in the swing. Maybe out of all your videos you address this in one of them? Thanks for all! Mitch in Cal USA
The set up advice and hand position was awesome! I tend to adjust my grip allot. My set up I'm sure is always wrong. I struggle so bad with slicing the driver, I quit teeing off with it haha
Morning Dan - Working on posture at the mo’ with my instructor as was slightly too bent over at address so need to be taller from the spine. Must admit have always set up with one ball position with Irons - just a small step to left with left foot and right foot changing width depending on club, after watching Butch Harmon video few years ago. All the top coaches endorse this. How can you get consistency by keep moving ball around in your stance ? Great video as usual, Dan and thanks for sharing 👍
Danny, when Graham is explaining the distance @ 8:45 you have the benefit of having the X in the Project X shaft to mark each increment, but what if you don't use a Project X shaft ? Is there an actual distance or is it just half steps, quarter steps, etc... Thanks!
Danny, have you considered using one-length irons? If not, why not? From the wedges to the #3, the clubs are identical in every way (including weight) except loft. Using them would promote consistency in ball positioning, swing, and all the other factors you talk about. I'd like your opinion. Thanks.
@@MikeCrook-hv9qp hi Mike, I certainly did my research on one length irons as logically it makes sense. However, when I found out how Bryson Dechambeaus clubs were produced I realised that the mass produced clubs that manufacturers like Cobra have developed come no where close to the e quality of those used by Bryson. I’ve heard the weighting of each club and design has to be unique and simply having them all the same length is not good enough.
I just started playing about 2 months ago. Been watching all of your videos and after a good range session I muttered “Thank you Danny” Guy on the range next to me overheard and said “Danny Maude?!” You’ve got a lot of fans
I knew the importance of checking the grip regularly but never thought about the ball position staying in the same place with your lead foot with all of your irons and just widening your trail leg some as the club gets longer. It goes to show you that if pros are getting lessons, we amateurs definitely need lessons. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.
Yet another brilliant video. Not played for years and this along with your others so helps. Its the simplicity of explanation that make these invaluable. So many thanks
Great videos, Danny. All the way from Austria I look at your videos and must say that these are more than helpful compared to others out there and helped me a lot especially with my short distance chipping. Hope to play with you some day!
Thanks for the refresher but could you help with the change of direction at top of backswing. I struggle sometimes with left shoulder turning first but I’m not sure of how my hands should be working consistently. Thanks , Robin
Thanks for that brilliant video. Ist my understanding right, that, for the right distance between my feet and the ball (I am talking about the driver), I can simply lay the driver on the ground, touch the ball with the bottom of the driverhead and place my feet at the end of the grip?
Great video. I really enjoy your golf tips. I just wonder why I seem to hit my irons better with the ball further back in my stance. Starting with a 60 degree just inside my back foot down to a 7 iron just behind center. Is there something in my swing that would cause that?
Thank you, Danny. So with the stance and the right foot position, does it only move to the right as the irons increase, or does the right foot also move slightly back? So your stance rotates clockwise as the irons get longer?
Been hooking driver quite a bit recently and I think it’s it’s definitely down to this ,the club face looks open to me at address now . Obviously over time I’ve been closing it and not noticing due to my grip😂❤
Thanks Danny, I am getting lazy with the basics. Next time I drive to the Uk, I must book a lesson. Got so disappointed with my game last week I ordered a set of Eleven golf irons 😂🙈. I’m off to Scotland in September I’m sure they will go down well.
After 30 years of scratch golf it’s my humble opinion that the rhythm of the swing is the only thing that truly matters. If you can hit the ball without adding anything to the contact, then you will thrive. Even with near perfect form…the smooth rhythm is the key
Certainly agree that you need to have a free flowing swing. But like I mentioned in this video, if your basics aren’t correct at the start even the most rhythmic golf swing won’t help you square the club face at impact
Brilliant video! Danny is..Humble and has the humility to say Im Human too" The best coach on the net

Such a great video! Thanks Danny. This and the wrist hinging video are helping my swing get dialed in. Appreciate you! 👍🏻🏌🏻♂️
@robscott553 thank you. Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
Great knowledge Danny thanks for sharing his advice.
Pleasure John all the best
Thanks Danny, super simple explaination as always and a reminder for me to get my basics right!!
Happy to help!
Brilliant so informative I'm going straight to the practice range to practice that routine
Have fun Michael
Danny, really learned a lot from this video about the correct ball placement. Been struggling with hitting my fairway woods and driver correctly. Quick question: Generally what's the correct ball placement for a 4 hybrid?
Another great video, changing width of stance to improve strike, grip is also important, thanks again. I really enjoy my Saturday morning coffee on the deck with Danny.😀⛳️👍
I love to hear that 🙏
Thank you sop much for these valuable tips Mr. Maude as a beginner golfer, this is going to help me get my grip and stance correct. Thank you so much my good sir. INVALUABLE
@morenamochesela348 you are very welcome. Thank you so much for watching and enjoy practicing 🙏🏻
Perfect prep for a long weekend of Golf 😊
Happy to help

Hilarious, we’ve all been there 🥺
This guy is the only 1 that I would have confidence in to fix my slice that pops up every few months for about 12weeks and soon as my car back on road I'm biting the bullet and booking in and doing the long drive from Manchester because i want a long term fix not just quick fix 👍👌👍
Really kind of you to say Darren
one of your best Danny, and that is saying something. Cheers
Really kind thank you
Thanks Danny. Your help has taken my handicap down to single digit.
Amazing to hear Andrew, 🙏
I so agree with this video. If you don’t ’think golf’ when you set up it gets you every time. Never assume! Super set up tips!!!
Thank you Heather
This video is excellent for long time golfers who think they are setting up correctly but…… have got lazy - like my good self - great help - tee shots straight and know where to put the ball in my stance for all clubs - thanks 😊
@AnnCurling you are most welcome. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
That was very helpful Dan, the iron set up was the opposite of what I was thinking and I’m sure I’ll improve my striking next time I play. Maybe tomorrow. Lee Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺
Love to hear how you get on Lee
Thanks for solid Video Danny. Great detail on grip. I run into one problem I seem to always have and that is rolling the right hand over the left just before impact. I struggle with that. I have always had a very weak left hand (strength) so my right hand is really strong in the swing. Maybe out of all your videos you address this in one of them? Thanks for all! Mitch in Cal USA
The set up advice and hand position was awesome! I tend to adjust my grip allot. My set up I'm sure is always wrong. I struggle so bad with slicing the driver, I quit teeing off with it haha
Amazing video !!! Absolutely amazing !!!
Thank you, appreciate the support 😁
Hi Danny, any recommended grip trainers for left-handers?
Morning Dan - Working on posture at the mo’ with my instructor as was slightly too bent over at address so need to be taller from the spine. Must admit have always set up with one ball position with Irons - just a small step to left with left foot and right foot changing width depending on club, after watching Butch Harmon video few years ago. All the top coaches endorse this. How can you get consistency by keep moving ball around in your stance ? Great video as usual, Dan and thanks for sharing 👍
Absolutely Ken, a constant ball position ensures the same strike each time
This video is a master class !!! Thanks !!!
Thank you Carlos!
Danny, when Graham is explaining the distance @ 8:45 you have the benefit of having the X in the Project X shaft to mark each increment, but what if you don't use a Project X shaft ? Is there an actual distance or is it just half steps, quarter steps, etc...
Thanks!
Is there a Lefty version of the GRIP TRAINER?. Love the Channel.
There is indeed Nick
@@DanielMaude Wonderful. I'll get involved. Thank you.
Been watching all of your videos and after a good range session I muttered “Thank you Danny”
Guy on the range next to me overheard and said “Danny Maude?!”
You’ve got a lot of fans
@CM-yx9xw you are very welcome. Thanks so much for watching. Comments like this really mean a lot 🙏🏻
Danny, great content! The coaching you provide is valuable! Keep it up..!
@TBow8888 thank you so much 🙏🏻
Cheers Danny. This is pure gold 👌
Happy to help
I knew the importance of checking the grip regularly but never thought about the ball position staying in the same place with your lead foot with all of your irons and just widening your trail leg some as the club gets longer. It goes to show you that if pros are getting lessons, we amateurs definitely need lessons. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.
@roadtoscratchgolf3481 you are most welcome. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Yet another brilliant video. Not played for years and this along with your others so helps. Its the simplicity of explanation that make these invaluable. So many thanks
That’s really kind of you Alan to take the time to feedback
Interesting set up process. Will try this out tomorrow, as I often struggle with ball positioning.😊
@bobsundermann4280 thank you for watching. Enjoy practicing 👍🏻
Majestic insights. Thankful for this ❤
You are so welcome
Great videos, Danny. All the way from Austria I look at your videos and must say that these are more than helpful compared to others out there and helped me a lot especially with my short distance chipping. Hope to play with you some day!
Very kind Dom, appreciate the support 😁
Thanks for the refresher but could you help with the change of direction at top of backswing. I struggle sometimes with left shoulder turning first but I’m not sure of how my hands should be working consistently.
Thanks ,
Robin
Spot on Danny. Thanks
@stilldo56 you are very welcome. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Thanks for that brilliant video.
Ist my understanding right, that, for the right distance between my feet and the ball (I am talking about the driver), I can simply lay the driver on the ground, touch the ball with the bottom of the driverhead and place my feet at the end of the grip?
The tilt with driver. Upper body to right or pelvis shift to left or both(assuming right handed golfrr)? Also should grip be adjusted for tilt?
It’s more of just a tilt in torso. Grip doesn’t change unless you want the ball to curve differently
One of your best videos! Thanks
Thank you Jamies
Down the range shortly, great set up tips, thanks Danny, keep them coming mate.
All the best Paul
Great advice, thank you..
You are so welcome!
No just away from the target
Danny! Wow! This lesson really helped my game......
@monteb3775 that’s great. Enjoy. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
These distances are a game changer... great drill
Danny i literally LOOK FORWARD when i see you emailed me a video..i grab my coffee and tune in!!!
I love to hear that thank you
Been hooking driver quite a bit recently and I think it’s it’s definitely down to this ,the club face looks open to me at address now . Obviously over time I’ve been closing it and not noticing due to my grip😂❤
What a great lesson, thank you
Glad you enjoyed it Fiona
Thanks Danny great tip
Really kind Terry
Thanks Danny, I am getting lazy with the basics. Next time I drive to the Uk, I must book a lesson. Got so disappointed with my game last week I ordered a set of Eleven golf irons 😂🙈. I’m off to Scotland in September I’m sure they will go down well.
You will love it up there
After 30 years of scratch golf it’s my humble opinion that the rhythm of the swing is the only thing that truly matters.
@@DanielMaudefair just don’t focus on it while playing…that’s for the range
@@AbadaWeeeeeeee 💯👌 that’s why it’s so important to practice 👍
Great as usual, but I'll arthritis with bent fingers stops mee overlapping my grip. Any suggestions for a two handed grip?
Baseball grip with 10 fingers on the club is absolutely fine
Im a beginner, 56 yo, getting back in after 15 years. Watched this before I went to the range today. I was crushing straight drives 220! Great tips!
@SkywalkerPMs that’s great! Well done. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
