Been trying to figure out exactly why my lining wasn't 110% perfect. This video explained every aspect of producing quality basic line work. I finally have gotten consistent lines. Thank u! Keep promoting this channel. It's really helpful for people that are learning. Was starting to feel a little hopeless. This definitely made all the difference. Definitely made me more confident in my work
Dude you’re the best and the fact all this easily understandable and comprehensive content is free and accessible to anyone has helped me progress faster than I could’ve imagined over the past couple of months, thanks man you are a true artist and gentleman and I appreciate your page endlessly
I tattooed myself yesterday and I had to go over the same lines like 5-6 times and I couldn’t figure out why but now I know it was definitely because I was too scared
You really don't get a good idea until you hit skin. I did my first tattoo on myself and it really gave me an aha moment. Did my second on my wife and it was so much better. Cleaner lines.. more consistent depth throughout the line
My favorite thing about giving myself my first tattoo was to figure out what skin felt like first hand. I genuinely wasn’t even In pain I was more so anxious that I wasnt getting deep enough (which I didn’t, it’s super light like a faded pen, I could’ve went deeper) my ones following that one though have been looking better :)
i got a machine the other day and did the same, a lil star on my leg and because it didnt hurt i did another one and went out of my way to make it hurt and learned what a blow out was lol. the beauty of it is even though they look awful, they were my first tattoos and i did them :D
My first switch from coils to pen style didn't go so well. The cartridges were cheap and ink wasn't flowing correctly. Thanks for the informative videos, enjoying watching and learning. I'm using fake skin only. Wow this is cool! 👌
So I didn’t realize, but as a beginner I tend to run slow. And everyone on YT is running at like 9-10 volts so that’s what I set my machine to, but I didn’t know how fast to move. Recently I swapped to a lower voltage around 8-8.5 and I found that I still get clean lines and they don’t look as traumatized as when I was on a higher voltage. Also with that in mind I dropped my shader voltage to 7.5 and my god I love it. Definitely if you’re starting out start low and work up. You don’t realize how fast that needle is at first lol
Your practice skin reminds me of how Peter Han tells people to practice pen sketching, and dropping a line on top of a line with precision is going to determine your skill.
I tried doing a large snake tattoo on my forearm and I just couldn't get the lines completely like I wanted but now I know my errors and its working wonders!! Thanks alot man this helped me so much!
Thank you for the video ! I did my fourth tattoo on human skin yesterday and I was pissed because some of my thin lines were shaky. My drawings/paintings/stencils are super good (I’ve been drawing since the age of two years old) but it makes me sad to draw a really good tattoo but the outcome is 80% correct compared to the drawing. 😔
Awesome video. Thank you! I only plan on playing with fake skins and leaving the real work up to the artists and tradesman out there. But you help a lot and for that I am really grateful. Thanks!!
Another great video!glad I was looking around and found this channel.keep them comen man.im sure your helping out alot of beginners and even some older artists.you can always learn new tricks in tattooing.
Man, I love all your videos. I have to ask you in this one what are you using for the outlining? That isn’t just one needle almost looks like possibly two or three. I’m using a 12 round line right now and it’s so skinny I feel. Wanted to know what you used here. Thanks!!!
I have a “ Michael Myers “ tat on my forearm, this makes me feel that I can touch up areas about it that I don’t like. Add shading. Thanks , very helpful.
Question, if we use the example of your third line (the correct one) what would happen if you kept that same needle depth and voltage but slowed your hand speed way down. Would you “cut” the skin again like the second line? Thanks.
You don't switch between machines for tattoos. The only thing that changes is needle type/arrangement and size. If you wanted to do fine lines, you'd just use a smaller needle grouping.
Thanks for the video! You mentioned that the needle must be completely pulled inside the catrigde when the machine is off. My needles are always hanging out a little (~2mm) when off. Is this a problem with the machine or the cartridge? Do you know how to fix it? I'm using a mast fold pro pen style machine with adjustable stroke. Even when I adjust to the lowest stroke, the needle hangs out when machine is off. Please help!
What is your actual style?do you mainly do traditional?new school?Realism?I know alot of tattoo artist do it all but what is your preferred type of work Brandon?
Great questions so I’ve worked almost my whole career in a walk in street shop so I’ve had to get proficient at all styles but if I’m drawing something it’s traditional or neotraditional.
@@Tattooing101 I was gonna say I've seen the traditional stuff you do on here and it's da** good man.i started at a local shop in Midwest indiana and all I did was clean the shop and trace his stencils.so once I noticed he wasn't teaching me anything I happened to move and get into a great shop a couple years later and started learning alot and I mean ALOT!but then the pandemic hit :( so after about a solid 6 or 7 months of every day tattooing pig skin, fruit, reel skin, and a couple friends I ended up having to get a job to pay my bills.so I ended up working for Amazon while this pandemic is going on and just tattoo in my free time until this is over and I can actually go back tattooing full time at a shop or the same shop possibly.but watching your videos has really got me back in the groove of tattooing every weekend and when I'm not tattooing friends and family I draw and or paint "graffiti" still in my 30s.so just wanted to let ya know your traditional style is absolutely great from what I've seen and that and black and gray is what my main focus is on now.ive been doing alot of newschool stuff lately but wanna get back to the traditional and graywash.so just wanted to say thanks and keep these tips, tricks, hints, and review on budget machine videos comen man cause your channel is growing more and more each and every day!
Im tattooing a hand I tend to float the need but in the flexible areas such as webbing the ink tries not to take everywhere my lines take smooth just not the hand am I not pushing the needle deep enough. I feel I push pretty deep but the skin is flexing with the needle. Single needle. Is that a voltage problem?
Why is it that everybody or every video I watched tells you not to angle the gun but then I see people with almost a 45° angle while their tattooing lines back and forth not side to side
I feel like lining at 7volts (complete beginner with minimal xp) I have a similar, if not the same, hand speed. At 10v comparatively, with similar hand speed, would I be doing something wrong?
I noticed that you said that you push your lines . But when you started tattooing the rose you pulled all your lines so far. is there a reason for that?
So when your going over your stencil lines, do you keep your hand posture to where you can always see your stencil oor are there times when you can't see it and you wing it hoping you got it good?
i use coil machine, but going to get one of those pen style machines, was wondering can u dip the tip of the needle in water to clean it off when switching colors ect.. like when using coil machines.? just asking cause i dont wanna be shorting the pen out or anything like that, lol..
i always enjoy your video's. i hope you keep on doing these. besides do you consider the pro-hawk needles as good. and which would you recommend for realism tattoos.
So I would assume it’s better to be too light than too heavy with the needle as you can go over it? Obviously you MUST get it right as much as possible but, you get what I’m saying?
is it normal to always have your pinky down on the tattooing surface? I tend to fuck up my stencils this way and it seems like it happens to him here a little bit too
Hi I'm trying to take your course online does this course fulfill both the Practical and theoretical requirements I'm trying to get my license in Alaska I have my business license from California but they require a thousand hours here in Alaska

hello mike that's a great question. For lining I run my critical power supply around 10 for the normal liners that I use for a smaller needle like a 5 or a 3rl will turn it down to 8. how for shading I like to stick to about a 8-9 for smooth shading and having a smaller stroke will help as well. and last when I am working on a color tattoo for the style that I tattoo I run my machine at a 10, the same as I do for my lining.
If you're really skilled you can hang out far and avoid running too deep. This tip you mentioned is mainly for avoiding blown out lines. I've seen a few artists do it and still have pieces come out nice. Probably just preference.

This is a better explanation of how you can damage the skin if you are not aware of your hand speed and voltage. Great job!
I tattooed myself yesterday and I had to go over the same lines like 5-6 times and I couldn’t figure out why but now I know it was definitely because I was too scared
stretch that skin and commit! lol✌👊
Lol I'm doing my first tat tonight Ive practiced quite but but first time on a person I'm excited 😆 but I can see me not going deep enough

You don't switch between machines for tattoos. The only thing that changes is needle type/arrangement and size. If you wanted to do fine lines, you'd just use a smaller needle grouping.
Any opinions on CNC police carts on skin? They've been really nice on synthetic for me I'm just a bit hesitant to put lines on myself with them.
Do you use your wrist when lining or drag your arm?
"i like to push my lines"
instantly goes to pull a line
I was going to comment that 😂😂
Thanks for the video! You mentioned that the needle must be completely pulled inside the catrigde when the machine is off. My needles are always hanging out a little (~2mm) when off. Just general drawing advice - push your lines for straight lines and pull for curved lines.
"Thank you. This is what I needed to know."
hey man, when tattooing on a practice skin, does it need to be streched like tattooing on a real skin, or no?!?
thank you for this video...
Yes, it's good practice to stretch even on practice skins!
Hey bud what needles are the best to use and by the way your videos are very helpful thanks

Im tattooing a hand I tend to float the need but in the flexible areas such as webbing the ink tries not to take everywhere my lines take smooth just not the hand am I not pushing the needle deep enough. Stretch the skin so it’s tight blood
Hello what Is the best to use to transfer stencil from paper to skin
Thanks for this video,,helped a lot!
Is the needle supposed to be out in the cartridges or not
Recommendations for machines that are inexpensive?
Why is it that everybody or every video I watched tells you not to angle the gun but then I see people with almost a 45° angle while their tattooing lines back and forth not side to side

what sized needle are you using ? thanks!
I noticed that you said that you push your lines . But when you started tattooing the rose you pulled all your lines so far. is there a reason for that?
I had the same doubts since he says he pushes the lines but hes going the opposite dirección many times
It has a lot to do with the fact that is doesn't fully understand how tattooing ACTUALLY works.
Thank you for the informative video 👍
does it matter where i grip the machine? i usually hold it farther down like a pencil should i bring my grip up higher like in this video ??

What machine you using??
What are you putting on the skin before you start the line? Is it just small amounts of Vaseline?
Vaseline
Just got a dragonhawk basic from amazon i have got comfy but are they any good on skin
What machine should I get for blackoyts aor just line's?
can you add spanish subtitles to your course please!?

Hey dude great video, my question is. What is the thickness of the fake skin you are using??
Every really clean tattoo I see. The artist was using a coil. Can you get a really clean tat with a rotary? What are good cartridges?
amazing artists use both no doubt
How much are your needles you buy? Like the good ones what’s a price range

How thick is your practice skin?
I have that 1mm junk that came with my kit....and yes I'm a true green horn beginner....lol

Those are no good, too thin and you'll never learn about the right depth with those. Get these instead: learn.tattooing101.com/practice-skin-orderform
I keep reading that the needle should not stick out more than 2mm from the tip of the cartridge... any validity in this piece of information?
