*I'm deaf in my right ear which is why I'm not wearing headphones. I know, it's a bummer not to get the panning sounds. It's also been a bummer to only have one ear my whole life for lots of other reasons, like, playing telephone growing up, I was terrible at it. But, I'll be ok, and I'm getting both channels in the earbud, thanks for your concern :)

I always saw the negative space of their logo as the actual circle, (also, obvi ref to lady bits.)
This song directly references The Oresteia, (cycle of greek dramas.) After Agamemnon returns from the Trojan War with his prize-Casandra, (who is all like, “I wouldn’t go in there if I were you, she’s gonna kill you” and he was all like, “shut up concubine, that chicks my wife why would she kill me,” and she was like “whatever, I don’t like you anyway”,) is killed by his wife, Queen Clytemnestra,
Orestes comes home and kills his mother, (because Apollo told him to-Apollo made me do it?,) as a result he is pursued by the furies, (it was either a punishment for murder or specifically matricide.) Eventually, Athena shows up and resolves everything, (deus ex machina anyone?)
Considering the song is on the same album as “Judith,” which is supposedly, specifically about Maynard James Keenan’s relationship with his mother, I feel like Keenan’s issues with his mother is likely a layer of the song’s meaning.
My shot in the dark guess is that it might have to do with how when you know someone is sick and probably going to die you start to kill them in your mind to prepare for when they eventually do die-you’ve already experienced many of the emotions from the loss so the actual loss isn’t so painful in the moment, and, sadly, they are left somewhat abandoned because you’re treating them like they’re already gone. I have no evidence to back up the idea that this interpretation is at all autobiographical.

This is the second most beautiful song APC has written behind 3 Libras. The call and response of the intro guitars to the ethereal ghost chant when the guitars drop out. The lyrics pick up at the point Orestes returns home and learns that his mother had her lover kill his father and now the gods demand him to avenge his death by killing his mother. Its his internal conflict. I believe this parallels Maynards strained relationship with his mother and I feel like its him trying to let go of all the anger and hostility he held against her from his childhood, to her blind faith, etc.

Your reaction at the final chorus, when Maynard's multitrack vocals hit, kinda perfectly encapsulates how I feel about A Perfect Circle's debut and, really, most of their work: a darn good band on their own, but it's Maynard that elevates it to something special. (Though Paz Lenchantin goddamn held it down on the bass on this album, I will give them that.) Thirteenth Step is the least egregious in this regard - the band's songwriting and technical ability improved a lot and the gap was a lot smaller. On the work that followed, sometimes I actually felt as if instead of Maynard lifting the band up, the rest of the band was dragging him down. (Actually, I feel that way about pretty much all of Eat the Elephant.) But, of course, that's just how I see it. Very interested to see how you react to the rest of their catalog after dissecting their debut.

I believe that there is no such thing as a perfect circle or a straight line. This drummer is the same one in the band puscifer. I dont believe I'm giving away too much info by saying that Maynard joined puscifer to write rev. 22:20. See if you recognize that song. I think you would.🙂

I don’t know what the intention was with the lyrics, but my dad was sick and medicated to the point of unconsciousness. He passed away before anyone had to make the decision to stop treatment, but the lyrics “cut away, clear away, snip away and sever this umbilical residue, keeping me from killing you” never had a violent connotation for me. “I can almost hear you scream, give me one more medicated peaceful moment” was pretty poignant too. This album was in my heavy rotation when all that was happening and Orestes was a particularly difficult listen.

You're definitely right that no one is Danny Carey and you can't expect his crazy polyrhythms and octopus-like fills really, but Josh Freese is actually a really great drummer. He can play virtually any style (check out his insane discography of work as a session drummer -- dude is wicked talented) and he does have some really great grooves and unique drum patterns with A Perfect Circle too, particularly on their second album 13th Step. After a few decades of watching his Mother suffer failing health from an aneurysm, including
paralysis and inability to communicate verbally not to mention myriad associated complications

Just a personal opinion - every song that was done at the Stone & Echo live concert > studio version of the song. There's just something special about that performance and the mix of the sound. The Jay Leno live shows for "The Outsider" and "3 Libras" are solid, but those have already been heavily recommended. If you liked "Orestes," you'll like "3 Libras."
Also, yes Danny Carey is hard to match and APC definitely has a different sound than Tool.

You later gave the reason it's not a drum heavy song. It's somber. Didn't think you gave the drummer enough credit for getting off during the chorus of The Hollow, which is more uptempo cuz of the subject matter. This song is about excising connection w/ his mother who died which is emotionally still impacting him. Best song on the album, imo. Figured you'd be high on it.

While I can agree that he may have thought of a hypothetical situation where that might arise, his mother passed away at least 4 years after he wrote this so I don't think it would have been literal

@@wilderi I've always thought about the pulling the plug theory for awhile but the timeline was always what pulled me away.. I know she was paralyzed and her health was declining but I don't think she was in the hospital circa 98-99. She died from an aneurysm in 03. But I do believe it is something that would have been on his mind as a possibility. He keeps most of his relationship with her to himself and regrets exposing himself in songs about her to the fans.

You're really undervaluing the drummer, especially when you hear their last album where they have a new drummer. He stands out plenty on the album to me.

It’s just a difference in opinion, and to be fair, comparing to Danny Carey isn’t fair to anyone so it’s a tough act to follow lol

    • @fuel20
      @fuel20 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@SuperJersh I mean Danny is on another level. But I don't think Josh Freese had as much freedom in the writing since Billy does all the writing, except on the new album Maynard got involved with the music and not just the lyrics. But again I sorely miss Josh's style on the new album.
I always wonder how his part was written though. Is the song pretty much done and then he adds his part? I doubt it's like anything in how Tool writes their music. Banging it out for 4-6 hrs a day, months on end. Tour awhile and then rinse and repeat.

Maybe I'm being too literal about this, but I always assumed this was Maynard fighting with himself on whether to euthanize his mother, because of the pain/misery she was obviously in due to her paralysis. Orestes was indeed a revenge killing, but I think the name was more just being used for the concept of matricide generally.

Your analysis is spot on, but I attributed it to his relationship with his mother(maybe I have an Oedipus complex) towards the end of her life. The album was around the time she passed.

    1. To hear back on a final approval of my home equity loan.
