The worst part. I genuinely think Sonic The Portable would've like an okay 5$ phone game. But named it Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and hyping it's release so much was a dreadful business decision.
It's really cool to see this version finally getting more recognition, it was one of the first ones I played before the Wii version, I always found it more charming because it used Low-Poly models and the Sonic model from Sonic Rush on the Nintendo DS, it makes you relate this game to other portable Sonics.
There were supposed to be three episodes, but the third episode was cancelled if I remember reading right. Only episodes 1 and 2 were released. I think it would have been better if Sonic 4 had been just one full game. Then again, good gameplay.

Yeah, it's an actual thing. It was the first version of Sonic 4 I ever played. It used tilt controls to move left or right, tap on the screen for jump/homing attack and tap on Sonic to do a spindash, but if I recall correctly there's an option in the menu to change it to touch controls more like the ones in the mobile version of Sonic 1,2 and CD. That's why I wasn't really mad or disappointed with it, because I saw it as a mobile game from the very beginning. In fact I thought it was kinda brilliant. The tilt controls, although difficult to do precise platforming with, made me feel like I was changing the direction of gravity inside the game by simply rotating my phone in the real world and it felt kinda magical.
Looks like they saved the main 1up jingle for the end of a level if your total score was 10,000 or more (Any other times you get a 1up would play Unleashed's jingle). Plus there's no subtle visual effect for whenever Sonic goes max speed. Odd...
Wish you could downgrade back to this version. New update has screwed up graphics and weird sound oddities. Plus this old one has the cute iPod idle animation. Can't top that.

It's more comparable to the DS more than the 3DS duo to the 64 bit aesthetic that the Saturn and the DS gave Sonic
