@@gardeningwithhoss : Thank you ! I failed to start my seed until October 15 2020 in zone 8b. I see your onion plants set out in the garden in a recent issue in 12- 13 - 2022 talking about organic fertilizers. Yours look way ahead of mine.

I top dress with white play sand its fine grain sand from lowes or home depot even in my potted plants it stops all fungas nats activity , I always have nat problems inside without sand but the play sand stops them cold

I grew up on a farm in Hyde Co. North Carolina. Several years in a row in the mid to late 90's we raised Kushaws (some folks call em vegetable potatoes) . I didn't stack em too high maybe 2 to 3 high in the center of a 22' 10 wheeler body. I sold them for $ 2 or 3.
We made about $1000 . All of them sold local and we only had them 2 to 3 weeks. I might try to raise some more!!!!

I really appreciate the info you have . I am retired full time and appreciate the leggy plant info. Solves alot of my questions. Hoss tools website is booked marked right next to Amazon. Hoss tools seeds, fertilizer and seed starter are by far superior to any other I have tried. I have two Hoss wheel hoes and one planet jr.with Hoss tools on it. Besides gardening with them I have used extensively for my flower garden and yard repairs.

I’m in central Texas, can I start seeds this time of year outdoors without a greenhouse or should I get grow led lights for inside?

Yes you can do it outdoors. Just bring them inside if you expect some heavy rains.
Thank You for the video! I live in NC and this will be my first year starting seeds in a small 10x12 greenhouse and I was wondering what temperature do you all try to keep your greenhouse at while seeding tomato’s and peppers along with squash and okra. Thank You for your help!

Hoss Tools - I’m looking to build a plastic pipe rack to hold new lights to support your 162 cell trays I bought and need dimensions for the lights if that is possible. Thcx
The lights are 34 1/2" long, but the hangers are 30" apart the way we have them. But you can adjust the distance between the hangers for whatever setup you'd like.
I really enjoy your channel. I am curious about how you would plant non-pelleted lettuce seed. I had always covered it with a little mix, but received some Buttercrunch and Little Gem seed that recommended not covering the seed, because "it requires light to germinate." I planted the seed in a 162 tray using screened Pro-Mix BX, watered it in, and it germinated in two days without any seed starting mix covering the seed. I started it indoors under a grow light in cool 72 degree room.I know pelleted seed is already primed, so it's different. Thanks!
If you do cover it, do it lightly.
Hey guys! Love what y'all are doing and thanks for helping us all get better. My question is this: I live in 7a East TN area and want to plant a lot of onions this fall/winter. I read Dixondales recommends shipping in mid February, but I know you start them a lot earlier. I am confused as to which would be best... Any clarification would be helpful! Thanks!
If you don't get below 20 in the winter, you can plant them in the fall.
I live in Northeast Alabama and I overwintered mine last year. Planted in November. I did lose some but the reward was getting bigger onions before anyone else in our area.

I just checked your seed starting supplies and don't see any of the Black Gold seed starting mix, and there's no ProMix either. When I checked a couple of weeks ago, and didn't find the ProMix I was looking for, I ended up buying MiracleGro seed starting mix from The big "A". If I run out, I'll check your site again. Fingers Crossed. Just a word on "good seeding mixes" - this past spring I bought what I thought was a good one - Espoma Brand - and ended up with great germination, but ZERO plant growth. I had great seeds, but something in the mix was inhibiting root growth. After a couple of weeks of having seedlings "just sit there", I pricked them out, transplanted them into a good potting mix, and they took off. I later checked reviews and discovered this was a common problem. I'm really leery about seed starting mixes now.
We'll be adding it in the next week or so.
How long do you leave the grow light on your onions? What is the best schedule?

Q: I'm in Kentucky in zone 6b. I have never delt with the amount of pests munching on all my garden goodies.
I am using BT for the worms...but what are the monster lady bug things that are making lace of my leaves? What do I use to treat for those? Organic options?

Spinosad or Pyrethrin are great organic options.
You mentioned tomato troubles. I bought the big tomato plants from Lowe's & Wal-Mart this past summer. All the leaves on all the plant's were gone or rotted off within days. Whatever the cause was, I had nothing but bare green skeletons. Also, my sweet pepper leaves & sweet potato leaves were full of holes, as were some of the fruits of the peppers. I did find One tomato horn worm on one tomato plant. I realize that some pest attacked the plant's. Now that we're into hurricane season here in North Central Florida & get a lot of rain every day,but I guess my question is, could could too much water kill my tomato plants?
I'd really like an episode or part of one on micro greens.
Too much leaf moisture can result in virus and disease issues for sure.

So if you have a greenhouse you shouldn't use the dome on the seed try
No need in it unless it's something that peppers that might require a decent amount of heat and humidity to germinate. But for cool weather crops, no.

Only ONE onion seed per cell?
You can plant more than one per cell and pull them apart at transplanting. We try to get one seed per cell, but not a big deal if we get more than one.

This time of year it won't matter much. In the spring, we just let them set outside the greenhouse for a few days before planting.
Wanted to ask about amendments to your soil when you plant. Do you ever add items such as bloodmeal, bonemeal, feathermeal, azomite to your soil. I think I have heard you say you add peanut hulls sometimes but interested in your thoughts
We have access to really good compost, so we don't use any of those. They work, but just know that they work really slow.
I have been searching for a good storage solution for my garden seeds. My current storage solution is a ziploc gallon sized bags. It would be nice if I could organize and view my seed collection without spreading them out over the dining room table. What is your recommendation?
Ziploc bags in the fridge is an easy way to store them.
I've been pinching the tops of my pole beans when they exceed my trellis height thinking that terminating the growing tip would trigger pod production. It occurred to me today that I never really researched to see if this was true. Thoughts?
Not sure it would trigger pod production -- just more leaves at the base of the plants.
Great info on seed starting seedling management from guys selling seeds. Just a suggestion, but could you possibly do a couple of 'Row by Row' shows a week to help all of us who are on Covid lock down. I know you guys are busy but some people probably wouldn't mind a little bit more. I guess if I have to I'll watch some 'Row by Row' re-runs. Cheers!

I dug to check on my sweet potatoes but could not find any. I have a lot of foliage and its been over 100 days. Do you think they need longer in the ground? Maybe they did not get enough water? I have them in a very sandy loam. Thanks! planted the slips April 28th. South Central Texas
Let them keep growing. Sometimes they can take a little longer.

We have all the items except the seed starting mix. There's a shortage of it this year due to COVID.

Just mimic natural daylight hours with the lighting.

Silly Question-Do all varieties of sunflowers produce seeds to roast and eat or just certain kinds. It would be nice to have beautiful colors as well as edible delites!
Yes most all of them do.
@@gardeningwithhoss I want to plant sunflowers as a cover crop. I have access to a no-till drill. I hear that some sunflowers are bird resistant. I don't want that because I want to let some go to seeds for birds. I would also like to throw some showy big sunflowers in the hopper for a mix. "Diversity" I think they call it. I am looking for some cheap sunflowers that are not bird resistant.
The LED grow light, I'm looking for one like you showed. Could you PLEASE tell me where I could find that light? I"m teaching gardening to middle and high school students on gardening and we want to start growing seed starts.

You can get a led shop light at Walmart for $21 the last time I checked, I bought 2 last fall
Hey Travis I have a question are baby lima beans a special variety of lima beans or is that just normal lima beans that you pick early?
Could be both, although there are varieties that make smaller, "baby" size beans.
I ordered one of your kits with the dome, how long do you leave the dome on after the seeds sprout? Do you use the led grow lights with the dome on and i have the tall dome which will keep the light to far above the seedlings when they first sprout. Can you address this since i didn't hear you say anything about the domes, much appreciated!
Just leave the dome until all the seeds sprout.
I am in central Florida. Can we grow garlic here and if so what kind and when do we plant them?
I'm in Central Florida as well and I have tried for several seasons to grow garlic and it's just the most pitiful garlic you have ever seen. I have pretty much gave up on growing garlic here. I haven't tried Elephant garlic yet though. I will give that a shot soon, but if that fails, I will not grow garlic again, at least not here in Central Florida. I will simply have to buy our garlic. If you want to try your hand at garlic, we can only grow softneck varieties here in Central Florida, or you may want to try the Elephant garlic. Garlic goes in the ground here late November to about mid December. Be patient as they take a good long while to grow, like 17 to 19 weeks give or take.
Need to try elephant garlic.

I want to ask what the relationship between the two of you is? Are you father and son of brothers. I ask because I had 3 brothers. There was 1brother from my father's first marriage and the age difference was 37 years. My other 2 brothers were anywhere from 3 years older to about 10 years older; they were from my mom's first marriage. I thought that you two might be father and son but I'm not sure. Love your channel and I plan on purchasing a drop irrigation system soon. I have seen a lot of them but I think yours is the best.

Not sure what you mean by the "deep watering tray." We only have one type bottom tray for our 162 and 338-cell seed starting trays.

Trying to grow Hoss seeds of cheers cabbage & top bunch collards. Been in the sun grow seeding mix with humidity dome on top for about 9 days now. I place the tray out in direct sunlight daily for about 5-6 hours with dome cover in place & water 2-3 times daily. Am I doing this correctly & about how long will it be before germination occurs and I start seeing sprouting? Thanks
Cabbage and collards should sprout within 9 days. The trays probably received too much heat in direct sun with domes in place.

Hoss seeds have excellent germination. Domes are not needed at this time of year because of intense heat. I am in southeast Louisiana.
They should germinate in 3-4 days.
Do they need direct sunlight or just shady indirect daytime light during the seeding stage. I am not set up with LED lights yet. Thanks
I have a question about cover crops and a small garden: how do you suggest someone that has a small 35 x 45 Garden to use cover crop as a way to amend the soil when my garden never seems to rest. I have gone from white potatoes to sweet potatoes and now i'm looking at planting something for the fall/ winter garden and just don't see where I can fit in a cover crop
Might want to consider giving yourself and the garden a month of rest on occasion. You'll start to see some declines in your production over the years if you don't. You can use quick cover crops like buckwheat that usually only take a month or so.
We love your show. I searched in your past videos about growing strawberries and I didn't find any. Do you grow strawberries in 8B? We're in 8B as well and had wanted to grow a strawberry patch. I started looking for plants and found bare root at a big box store and plugs on Isons.com. If you grow them in 8B, what variety is preferred? Any pointers for growing these as first time growers? Thanks!
We've never grown strawberries, but lots of people do.

They're not available in the states. They are made by a Canadian company and we are working with them to customize them for our trays.

Started the Tadorna leek seeds today. I noticed they have a strange green color. Is that their natural color or are they treated with something?
Treated with thiram, which is a very mild-fungicide that helps damping-off in seedlings. It doesn't stick around very long and doesn't get inside the plant.

Yes, one seed per cell. If we accidentally put two, no big deal. We'll then when they germinate.
What was the name of the farmers market that you mentioned in North Ga Mountains?
It wasn't a farmers market, but a roadside stand on the outskirts of Hiawassee on the road to Young Harris. Can't remember the name of it, but it's the only one around. Can't miss it.
Okay if I could plant seeds in those trays and put them in the sun why is it better to do that then to direct seed them in the garden

Young seedlings can be quite tender and weeds will likely outpace their growth initially. That's why it's best to transplant some things.
