  • Have you ever wanted to try growing your garden plants from seed at home? Good! Let's do it together.
    Not only is it more fun and more affordable, growing your garden plants from seeds is an easy and incredibly rewarding process. Indoor seed starting opens up your garden to new world of plants, new varieties and a heightened appreciation for the seedlings that make it all possible.
    In this video, I will show you my exact process for going from seeds to vigorous, healthy seedlings. I'll be there with you every step of the way as you learn how to prepare a growing medium (aka dirt), what to plant in, how to care for the seedlings, and more.

    Lots of great info. What I have noticed is that your videos are longer than most others out there, but they cover everything that I struggled to find out myself through lots of research and watching a bunch of lower quality videos in the process. They are definitely worth watching from start to finish. :) I just started gardening this year in May, but I have successfully used a sunny windowsill and MIgardener seeds to start my tiny little patch of food. I use the indent method as well, and learned after 100% germination on my tomatoes that I should use less seeds, and to cull early on so it’s not as devastating to snip off the other seedlings. Lol. I am working on fall garden seeds right now to transplant out once it’s not so hot out and bottom watering is the way to go!

      @@NextdoorHomestead I have Swiss chard, kale, bib head lettuce, spinach, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli just to try. I direct planted Swiss chard and Kale back on July 4th. That probably sounds insane to someone who is a seasoned gardener! Lol. One month later, I see true leaves finally coming out on the kale. And the Swiss chard just looks like cotyledons praying since they came out…Lessons learned.

    21:30 another great idea to figure out when to water. If your trays are the same size try to pick up the dry and moist tray a dozen times each. Memorize the weight. Eventually you'll just know if water is needed by just "testing" the weight. Without using the "toothpick method" which also works but I always misplace my toothpicks 😂 Alternatively with smaller trays you can use an old scale if you want to be precise. No more over/under watering.

    after germination can the trays be put outside with full sun? or, use a slightly transparent fabric to shade them a little? how tall or big should they be before transferring to the garden? the weather is in the mid 60's to upper 70's . thanks for a very simple factual site.

    • @NextdoorHomestead
      @NextdoorHomestead  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The short answer is yes as long as it's right after germination or you give them an appropriate hardening off phase. What kind of plant are you working with?

    Loving your channel. Super helpful! I wonder whether heat map needs to remain on after germination? And how many hours a day for grow lights?

    • @NextdoorHomestead
      @NextdoorHomestead  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're asking great questions and I'm sorry I can't give more clear-cut responses! Leaving the heat mat on or turning it off after germination is a question of your soil temp (aka the ambient temp of your indoor growing space) and the needs of your plant. If the soil is too warm and there's not enough light, they'll grow quite weakly. But overly cold soil is a good way to stunt their growth.
      The good news is it doesn't have to be exact - plants have a range of temps they can put on growth in - you just have to use your mats (or not) to get the soil into that range =)

    If you take the excess water out with something like a turkey baster (we have one just kicking around doing nothing in our utensil drawers since becoming vegetarian haha), and reuse it to water the plants, would that help mitigate the nutrient loss?

    • @NextdoorHomestead
      @NextdoorHomestead  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you mean using that excess water in the drainless trays to water other plants? Because if so, totally! Whenever I accidentally put too much water into a seedling tray, I pour out the extras into our berry patch right outside the garden =)
      Waste not^^

    Do you have any recommendations on amount of light for seedlings? Do they need a grow light?

    • @NextdoorHomestead
      @NextdoorHomestead  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are you growing them indoors? If so, my biggest recommendation is to get the app Photone and make sure that the DLI values are sufficient for what you're growing. I go over this a bit in my recent tomato seedling video actually!
      In terms of a grow light, you certainly don't need a fancy full-spectrum grow light for seedlings. Simple LED shop lights work very well. A very sunny windowsill can also work but in my experience isn't as ideal as a setup with artificial lighting.

    I've tried starting indoors and the problem I always have is that they start really well, but then stay really skinny seedlings and don't do well when I try planting outside. I've got one of those grow lights from Amazon that has the different colors and intensity in five adjustable wands. Is that good enough? Would a heating mat help? I'm up in mid Maine.

    • @NextdoorHomestead
      @NextdoorHomestead  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Heya! So a heating mat will generally only make legginess worse - they're great for speeding up germination but need to be used carefully after the plants sprout. In Maine, they would still be useful if your plants are outdoors in a garage or shed but not in a temperature controlled home.
      A strong grow light can definitely help, but make sure to check out how far the instructions say to put it above the seedlings. Many folks start out trying to put them *WAY* too high above the plants and they don't work. I use the app 'Photone' to make sure my lighting setup is strong enough =)
      Best of luck!

    • @ronallens6204

    How long do you leave grow light on per day for the seedlings?

    • @NextdoorHomestead
      @NextdoorHomestead  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It really depends on the type of plant. Mostly I use the app Photone to get it right. But I generally start with greens around 14-16 hours and adjust from there. And tomatoes/eggplants at 18-20.
      Really, really depends on your setup and the strength of your lights though!

      Ahhh, so those typically germinate quite quickly! I would personally gently check under the surface of the soil and see if the seeds are there and if they've rotted.
      If there are no signs of seeds sprouting under the surface, I would try again. If nights are really no cooler than 55 fahrenheit, they might do fine but it is still quite early in much of the northern hemisphere. I'm in a warm zone 9 and don't plant pumpkins until May 😁
