  • Trachelospermum jasminoides, commonly known as Star (Confederate) Jasmine, may just be the ultimate when it comes to vines for warmer climates (USDA Zones 8-11). There are a handful of classics that work in perfect harmony with traditional landscapes and Star Jasmine is among the top. I have used this so many times in my designs and it just performs so well, and its incredibly easy to grow. It can be relatively drought tolerant once established, and can actually take a bit of neglect... so for you brown thumbs out there, this may be your winner! The scent is among the most desirable in the world of plants and has a bit of nostalgia for some folks. Star Jasmin can be planted in full sun or part shade and will generally require moderate water. It loves rich loamy soils with good drainage but can tolerate some clay.
    I really love the versatility of Trachelospermum as it can be used as a climbing vine, a bordering plant, or as a ground cover when planted in masses! This plant will continue to be a go-to for me and other landscape designers not only because of it's performance, but it's timeless beauty.
    Happy Planting!

    Great vidéo, as always! Would you recommend this for hard-to-access slopes? If so, and this may seem a silly question but, would it be better to plant it low so it grows up or high so it grows down? 🥴

    Informative and to the point, thanks. can you please share some insight on other jasmin breeds and how to distinguish one from another?

    • @BudgetPlants
      @BudgetPlants  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! Yeah sometimes it’s hard to distinguish varieties especially if they’re not in bloom. And to make it more challenging, they may have different common names depending on what part of the country/world you’re in! That’s why I always recommend to search plants by their botanical name. This is the best way to distinguish varieties, as there are many reputable online sources that also have photos of individual varieties. Asiatic Jasmin can sometimes get confused with Star Jasmin. It’s just a slightly smaller leaf and more prostrate. It’s honestly just a matter of learning and remembering. In the landscape architecture program, the professor taught us to draw them in our journal, which helps the brain remember subtle differences. Feel free to reach out anytime!

    How do you maintain it when using it to grow against a fence? Do you cut it back every year so you don't have ugly dead vines growing under the new growth? If yes what season of the year is best? Thank you!

    • @BudgetPlants
      @BudgetPlants  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Generally, just a tight shearing back a few times a year is adequate. Theres really no bad time, unless it’s right about to bloom 😎

    Do the flowers blow all over the ground? Trying to find something for around the pool without the mess thanks

    • @BudgetPlants
      @BudgetPlants  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I suppose, if it was in a windy area, it could cause a little bit of a mess, but mostly they just shrivel up and fall then mulch into the soil. Generally, they are not a very messy plant. If this was my yard, I would not be too adverse to planting this fairly close to a pool. Especially since it’s an evergreen plant.

    Thanks for the suggestions, I am buying Confederate Jasmine from Costco and wonder how it will work with PVC fencing. Has anyone had experience with that type of fencing?

    How do you trim the top of the star jazmine so it's not too high? Mine has covered the landscape behind it.

    • @BudgetPlants
      @BudgetPlants  ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the application. Generally, you can’t ‘hurt’ Star Jasmine… if it’s in a vertical/vine form, use hand clippers to cut off tendrils to either thin out, or remove large pieces of walls and trellises. If it’s a ground cover, you can use a power hedger or hand shears to trim it lower and keep it contained within a certain boundary. Either way, it will have to be regularly maintained as SJ grows vigorously.

    Can I plant this in a large container in my balcony? My aim is to have a plant that provides privacy in my balcony. Can you provide a few suggestions if this is not a good option? TIA.

    • @BudgetPlants
      @BudgetPlants  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Absolutely! It does great in containers. However, you will want to make sure it’s on some kind of trellis if you want it to grow up for privacy. Podocarpus gracilior is also good in pots and grows upright and dense.

    How do you get it to bloom like this?

    • @BudgetPlants
      @BudgetPlants  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      These plants like fertile loamy soil, and moderate to regular water. In full sun, they should put on a good show of blooms.

    Please use classic known name of Confederate Jasmine. This is what its been called and known by.

    • @BudgetPlants
      @BudgetPlants  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It’s not called confederate Jasmine everywhere. This is exactly why we ALWAYS use the botanical name to prevent confusion. Some plants may have several common names, which can often cause confusion when searching for info, or trying to purchase. Always refer to the genus and species name of each plant when purchasing to verify you were getting exactly what you need.
