I'm in western Canada and I leave my Star Jasmine in a container in the full sun...it does very well. I bring it into my heated garage(windows in doors south facing) for the winter months. It overwinters well...lots of blooms every spring thru summer.
I got a star jasmine plant in late summer, kept it inside in a pot over winter but I completely forgot to water it. I thought it was dead, but just to check I cut a bit into the stem - the thing was alive! After months of no water and little sun, it was still alive. Once I started taking care of it again it started growing like crazy. My only problem is that it drops its flowers pretty soon after they bloom - like a day or two after it unfurls it’s petals, they get brown and fall off. But I’m still super impressed at how hardy this thing is
Mine has been growing on a chain link fence at the entrance to my back yard. Planted in 1990's and still growing strong. It is a great screen from the neighbors yard, the flowers are heavenly smelling and the only thing I have ever done is amend the soil in the bed close to it and prune. There is a bird that nests underneath. I love this plant.
I just purchased the star jasmine vine. I just could resist it’s amazing fragrance. I’ll be planting it on the ground. Thanks so much for this video, so helpful
Planted one at the base of a 6 foot privacy fence. After 6-8 years it goes 10 feet one way and 20 feet the other way along the top of the fence. Unexpectedly, it has climbed up a Pine Tree; The vines and flowers has to go up about 30 feet at this point... It's all mostly in shade. Probably flowers a little less then the pics I see, but it looks beautiful now (April, May) in (Tampa) Florida. It makes a great backdrop behind the tropical plants in front of it.
We have quite literally tons of this plant in our yard. The 15 foot purgola out back is completely covered with it. I have to occasionally chop openings in the vine walls to enter the purgola every few seasons. It will really take over an area if not kept in check. It has a very liquidy, almost rubbery and sticky sap that flows quickly when cut. The flowers bloom from around early April through around June here in the Columbia SC area and is absolutely wonderfully fragrant. Though more than 20 feet from the porch I can still smell the flowers anywhere in the yard.. especially in the morning hours.
Just got my first two confederate jasmines, and I can't wait to watch them grow. The video was very helpful and very encouraging. I was so happy to hear they grow so quickly. I will proably be getting more of these!!
I just got mine 3 days ago as well and I'm excited but I am a bit worried about root rotting and what's the best container. I put rocks in the bottom of the container before putting the soil. Should I leave a plate at the bottom or let the water go directly on the ground? AND if there is a perfect sunny spot but ants, can ants kill a Jasmine plant?
That’s why I got it!! I’ve been wanting it for years!!! I was in Frascati/ Rome where many homes we almost covered in them!! 😍 Next i was Bugambilias which remind me of Southern Italia, Positano, Capri, Sorrento... ok I want to go back now !! 😭
I got this Jasmine but I am in Boston. I plan to prune it back to make it manageable. Today is the first snow in Boston. I have it in a pot right now. When summer arrives, I will put it in a bigger pot outside on the deck. The smell is so nice.
I have a star jasmine in full sun and is growing amazingly well in the back of my property and when you reach the corner of my property you can smell this sweet jasmine, oh my so lovely!
I bought a star jasmine a little over a week ago to put in an area where we built a rope swing for our dog. I can't wait for it to grow over the supports to cover up something quite ugly to make it beautiful!
i keep my Jasmine in a pot outdoors. The aroma i beautiful!! I love it. Then the white flowers feel off. Not that much sun anymore. So i pulled it off dug a new hole for the pot and planeted it where it will get much more sunchine. Will the flowers come back?
Great video. Just picked up a Confederate jasmine at Costco today. Came home and hopped online to learn how NOT to kill it, landed here and see that you're LOCAL? Small world! Thanks for the content. Subscribed! ♥️
Is it possible to uproot star jasmine (or propagate it easily) from one property to another? I'd love to move my deceased mother's jasmine to my house.
This was great. Thanks I’m still unsure how big a stake I want to put around it though. I just bought mine, so can I fertilize it now in August? Is it best to cut the long tendrils now, or just wind them around the stake?
Did learn something as I was actually looking to find out how to trans plant it from my front fence to what will be the new front fence (I am moving the front fence back to make a smaller area for the dogs to help control their barking when they see some one walking by). We can smell the Jasmine on the porch when it is fragrant which is close to 100 ft away. I love it and don't want to lose it but the fence has to be moved.
Hi, I've planted one in my front yard, it's grown very big and bushy, exactly sames as your in the video, but problem is it does only some flower some years it doesn't at all. Does this plant need cutting?
Enjoyed the video. I want to graph my 10yr old star jasmine to start it as a privacy barrier on a chain link fence. Can you please give me tips on graphing?
What kind of wire would you recommend putting on stucco. I want to plant mine in pots on each side of the garage. I will train them to arch over the garage. What kind of wire to use?
I have a Jasmine vine that is growing large on a trellis...it keeps growing and I would like to know what I can get to keep it spreading on a trellis-like structure.....It is already over 6 feet tall and no where to go...nothing to attach to. Also...is there a way to cut some vines and put them in water or soil to create new vines... Thank you.... If you need a picture of what it looks like now I can send... Thanks again..... Dan Nichols St. Petersburg, Florida
They will produce pods that have seeds in them if that works. :-/ I'm waiting for my pods to open! They open and then the seeds fly away so I have to keep an eye on them.
Hi there, What's the best type of fertilizer for jasmine to use in the spring time in southern california? also how often do you have to fertilize and what kind of soil does jasmine grow best in ? do you know?
Hello, we live in SE Michigan area zone 6b, and we planted a star jasmine for the first time earlier in summer. It grew quickly and flowers beautifully. Should a prune back the vines now or wait until spring? Also do I need to cover it before winter as temps in Michigan fall to zero and below in deep winter? Thank you
I'm in 7-8 zone...... So I hope this lives in my area. My Aunt always had me plant a Night Blooming Jasmine for her each time she moved. You could smell it literally blocks away. But I know it wont grow in my area. Liked and Subbed, thanks!
Great information! Question for you. I am in zone 8. I wanted to put my star jasmine for a trellis wall on side of my porch. I did hear you say a little about not potted them in that zone to prevent killing them from freeze. Should I not pot them? Also what size pot would you recommend? Thank you.
I just bought 2 white and 2 yellow for a bamboo archway that I built a few weeks ago. I'm going to use something to tie the jasmine to the bamboo with because they dont seem very eager to climb since they've been in the ground.
I have a question regarding training Jasmine to climb a tree . Can Jasmine live alongside , or in fact growing around a tree , without killing the tree? I'm on a boat mooring , which has ltd possibilities for having some large trellis , or structure , on which to grown the plants up against , or around . So my options are a few large trees , which I figure would be perfect for a flowing plant like this to use . Something happened to my beautiful English Ivy after growing it for the past 30 years on my 12ft high wall! It spanned 12-16ft wide!! As of right now it’s dying a slow death! It was the focal point of my backyard, lush, dark green and beautiful! Plus it soaked up the bright light reflecting off of the wall! My heart is broken!! Now I need to quickly replace with something else and I thought of star jasmine!! I think it will be a good replacement! And the fact that you say it grows fast is important to me! I’m 65 and don’t have time to start over with the ivy! I will barely live long enough to see it fully mature like the previous ivy! My question is will it attach itself to my stuccoed wall and vine up the wall? I’m sure I have to train it first with eye hooks and maybe some fishing line!! Does that sound right! A few tips would be appreciated!! This wall gets morning sun up until early afternoon! I live in Las Vegas, Nevada!! Hope to hear back! Cory from Las Vegas
You would have to plant them closer than 6 feet. They really spread out a lot. Yes, I have rooted thousands of them. Usually June is the best month to do that
I would like to grow this plant in Bloomington, Indiana on the outside. I have a green house so I can bring it in during the winter. Can I grow it against my warm sunny wall or as a ground cover and then dig out and bring inside come winter?
How about in winter? Is it going to survive? I am in charlotte, NC. I have it this year and in the ground so I am afraid if it’s going to be dead during winter or what?
I bought one of these last year in spring at my local Lowes store. I am in zone 6a Pa, so, I had overwintered my Star jasmine vine in my heated greenhouse. Now, This year, I see that my plant is really spindly looking and I SHOULD have pruned it last year MAYBE after it had bloomed. SO, I will be pruning mine back to maybe 3 feet from the soil line. And, repotting it too. It REALLY needs repotting, the existing plant has mostly roots in the pot, and the soil has been spent, so, definitely I must repot it. I was hoping to hear you recommend what kinda soil ammendments or anything about the soil needs of the vine when I repot mine, BUT,. I guess that I will just wing it. I THINK that blooming plants like some extra phosphorus, so, that should be added to the potting soil? I do have lottsa soil additives that when used in small amounts should make for a well balanced soil mixture. Plus, I have a potting mix that by itself may do just fine anyway, I use VIGARO potting soil.
I have a south facing backyard and I get almost 8+ hours of full sun. There is nothing behind my yard to really filter the sun. I really like to grow Jasmin wine on my south fence. Can Jasmin handle that much of direct sun? I am in Southern California. I will have to grow in a pot but it will still be in a full direct sun area. I will use cactus mix well drained soil... Thoughts?
Hi Jim. Great video. I'm looking for a creeping vine that can handle hot summers and cold winters for an outdoor balcony. My big question in WHEN to plant. Thanks!!
Mr. Jim Putnam, my husband built a very hefty trellis for me in front of the outdoor fireplace rocks. Secured with wire. That to say, it's permanent. :) I planted my Star Jasmin plants in front of it to eventually climb up it. The holes I dug looked correct at the time, but now I am worried that the plants are too far away from the trellis. The vines at the backs of the plants are reaching the trellis, but I am really not sure if the distance between the main woody stalk of the plants and the trellis itself is too much. I am wondering if I should dig them up and re- position them a tad further back while they are still very recently planted. Currently the center stalks of the two plants are about 5.5 or 6 inches from the trellis. Do you think I should move them back a bit so that the main woody stalk of the plant is closer to the trellis? In this video yours look to be pretty much right at the trellis. Thank you for your advice if you see my post. :)
THIS is my 3RD post here. I will be TODAY repotting my Jasmine vine aka "Confederate jasmine". I sure DO HOPE that my plans of just ":potting it up with some average potting soil", into a bigger pot, after untangling the old ROOTBALL, will be a good game plan for it. Well, really, since I have a BUNCH of soil additives that I've bought, I will be sure to add some of the stuff to the new soil in which my jasmine vine will be planted in. But, I know not to add some stuff that will change soil PH and anything like that. Since my last post, I have pruned my jasmine vine down to about 5-6 inches. I can already see a bud that has swollen up on one of the pruned back vines or branches. After I get the plant repotted, it will be much more vigorous, as it is NOW, the pot is just FULL of mostly old roots with most of the old soil having been worn away. So, although THIS plant HAS performed GREAT last year whilst being POTBOUND. NOW, I MUST repot it up. I mean, just "rip into" that old ROOTBALL. And, repot it, in a bigger pot, with more NEW potting soil. I do WISH that I COULD plant it in the ground here, BUT, when it is taken care of right, and like in MY AREA, it is kept warm enough in a greenhouse, THIS plant, ends up performing WONDERFULLY.
Could i have it grow up a small bunch of weed trees or wouid it choke out the trees? Theyre overgrown holly bushes and another unidentified type of tree i pruned. Can i have them safely vine up trees?
HI! Love your channel as we embark on the landscaping for our new lot. We are looking at growing star jasmine in a container to grow up a lattice under 2metres to act as a screen for some ugly utilities in our backyard. We live in Sydney, Australia. What size container would be suitable to maintain happy growth at this height? Thank you!
Hi Jim, I have a 2 or 3 yr old potted star jasmine in a sunny position with a view to screening a fence. It has become woody with red leaves but virtually no flowers.. I do not think my support system successful on the fence has been as the plant has collapsed onto itself. Should I cut back the plant and start again ? Please advise...!! Thanks Mackie
Thread it up and into the fence. Intertwine the new growth and the plant should be strong enough to do it's own thing once you get it to the top of the fence.
Hello sir, my jasmine is wild and I want to share some with someone in PA. I'm in SC. Do I have to cut a piece with the root or just send it in a damp towel for her to put in water? Thank you!

Thank you so much! How can I get them to bloom longer? We love them so much but they are already showing signs of being done for the year.
Could i have it grow up a small bunch of weed trees or wouid it choke out the trees? Theyre overgrown holly bushes and another unidentified type of tree i pruned. Can i have them safely vine up trees?
How far apart would you plant these?
I want them to grow up my fense.
Perfect amount of information clearly stated
can it withstand a Michigan winter if planted out side
Thank you!
Hi Jim,
I have a 2 or 3 yr old potted star jasmine in a sunny position with a view to screening a fence. It has become woody with red leaves but virtually no flowers..
I do not think my support system successful on the fence has been as the plant has collapsed onto itself.
Should I cut back the plant and start again ?
Please advise...!!
Thanks
Mackie
Thread it up and into the fence. Intertwine the new growth and the plant should be strong enough to do it's own thing once you get it to the top of the fence.
I just got a star jasmine vine ~ I potted it ~ helpful video ~ thank you . Susan from Arkansas
I do have a question. Is it good for mailboxes?
Hello, what size pot would be suitable for long term outdoors?
Hello sir, my jasmine is wild and I want to share some with someone in PA. I'm in SC. Do I have to cut a piece with the root or just send it in a damp towel for her to put in water? Thank you!
Can you grow this plant from pruning it, to make another plant.
Can you propagate from cuttings?
At the top of the trellis, do you trim or let it fall down the front of the vine?
