The financials at 25:35 is pretty tragic. That she got a flat fee with no royalties for future re-usage is unconscionable by the publishers. Her design for the Harry Potter logo used by the films and future books could have provided instant retirement funds. Too many illustrators lack an agent or the savvy to get themselves good contracts with publishers. The fact the published moved on to lesser artists for later books using possibly digital techniques indicates their modus operandi. Another unique & wonderful artist whose talents were taken advantage of.
this was a really great video, very through! I had wanted to do a video myself on this subject but honestly you did an amazing job, so much research! thank you so much for posting, its hard to find much info on her online. Its so devastating she did not get royalties for book sales or the logo design!
I just finished watching this video, I am BEYOND pissed to know that she created the HP Logo and received zero royalties for it OR the artwork she has created for the books. Just horrid, and to know so many people became rich with this series, and she had such a huge impact and was probably unfairly paid for her work. Her covers were not just used in the US, they were also used for many other countries, including mine (Portugal). I don't like neither of the other US editions you showcased, they both lack a sense of magic and fantasy in them. To me, Mary's covers are the definitive versions. Thank you SO much for making this video, her artwork had such an impact on me growing up and it was so wondeful finding out more about her.
Yes it is unfortunate. Unfortunately a lot of similar things happen when an artist creates something before a series or franchise takes off and makes millions. Like another video I made about the Nike logo designer who was paid just $35 dollars for her work. When large corporations these days will often pay designers thousands or millions to create branding.
I might be biased because hers were the covers I grew up with, but I really do believe her artwork to be vastly superior to the one of the og british covers
This was very inspiring! Thanks for making this!!
Indeed a great find channel wise. Especially liking the fresh subjects for videos
That anecdote of Grandpré having a panic attack over JK "Jo" Rowling smudging the unfixed pastel art made me chuckle and beam from ear to ear.

Another, awesome, video!!! Your accuracy and zest/admiration for the artists keeps me coming back! So interesting!!!😍💙🎨🖼❤🤩
Enjoy your work.
thank you very much!
The length is definitely not a problem.
I am a loyal fan of her illustrations, and the details and atmosphere are just great
Mr Casmer is the coolest human and the best teacher in the world
i’m so happy i found this channel, love your work ❤️❤️
killer videos dude! no need to make them shorter, was a great watch
Agreed. The length is fine. Maybe consider not using white typography on a light ground…illegible 🙏

glad you enjoyed :)
@@cultureexplained omg I haven't watched that video yet but I will now, 35 USD for the Nike logo? oh my lord...that poor designer.
@@cultureexplained I did, I think you did a phenomenal job, I subscribed!
@@princepeterwolf thank you!
I love her Harry potter world. The artworks are amazing. I wish AI generate same drawings but they dont because of copyright issues

She's definitely a better graphic designer than her ex-husband. That's for sure lol
The fact that the artist never received a penny from the films despite the films using her logo is infuriating.
yeah it's really a tragedy.
Did the author, with her billion, give her a few million out of good will.
If not I suppose greed is good.
