The Artist Who Gave You Goosebumps

- R. L. Stine's Goosebumps book series was a worldwide phenomenon when it launched in 1992.
Growing up I read some of the books my brother had collected, but I was far more enamoured with the cover art created by Tim Jacobus than the words on the page.
From the frightening images of Slappy the dummy and the Haunted Mask, to the rich colours of The Cuckoo Clock of Doom and One Day At HorrorLand, the Goosebumps cover art was seared into my brain.
30 years later, I called Jacobus to discuss his work.

What’s your favourite Goosebumps book?
That's a tough question.
One of my favorites is a shocker on shock street.
@@montanajackson3713 Loved the cover!
Night Of the Living Dummy 2
@@ashleynicolecooke4386 A classic!
Tim Jacobus deserves more recognition.
Definitely!
Tbh I don't think the series would have sold as well without his iconic art. Kids are more visual. I know I wouldn't have picked up the series if it wasn't for the art.
Why? he got rich without turning famous. THATS THE DREAM!
I know right! Like should of made the video an even 8 minutes
@@nate6045 Totally. I'm 36 and seeing those covers is a flood of old feelings and wonder from the later days of elementary school. The art used to amaze and inspire me. I still remember studying the muscles on the "Attack of the Mutant" guy, and wanting so bad to draw superhero looking characters like that. Monster Blood II also really appealed to me, I think because I associated it with green Nickelodeon slime.
the goosebumps art is so iconic, i really feel like the covers help cemented goosebumps place in pop culture
Yep! Without those covers I’m certain they wouldn’t have been as popular.
Not only is RL Stine Goosebumps, so is Tim Jacobus. Both are the face of Goosebumps
The covers were at least half the reason I enjoyed the series!
Goosebumps deserved a better movie. Not some Jumanji rip off.
@@J4sseThe second film was better than the first, imo. It felt more like Goosebumps to me.
Without his artworks, I would have never ever picked up a Goosebumps book! Such iconic pictures with a special kind of magic!
I think that’s true for a lot of us. Those covers are special!
Perfectly said
Exactly because the books were typically disappointing once you read them.
Straight up, this dude is the reason why we wanted the books in the first place. A real unsung hero of the franchise.
Tim Jacobus is legendary.
His artwork for Goosebumps was what drew me in as a kid to the series; it was visually scary yet enticing.
It's a shame that the new reprints have such a bland and boring look because, I guess, adults think that kids these days need to have everything sanitized.
Nothing beats the original art!
It has nothing to do with tht lol
lol most kids are screwed
It’s about it being “esthetically pleasing”
Like a damn Amazon shop
Video
@@ifyouknowyouknow6964 It's honestly no different than reprints of "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark".
The original illustrations were strange, scary, and disturbing. The newer illustrations, not so much.
Tim Jacobus is an awesome dude! I used to write to him when I was 12. He would always write back! I still have all his letters, and of course, his art is awesome and iconic.
He’s such a humble guy. That doesn’t surprise me at all!
How were you able to write him?
Thank you Frank for convincing Tim's dad art school wasn't a waste of time. And thank you Tim for making some of the most iconic book covers for us 90s kids.
He's covers are iconic, without hes art the books wouldn't have been the same
Amen!
That was great. How cool to actually hear from the guy. Always loved his style.
Thanks!
His artwork on the book covers made me want to purchase the books at the bookfairs in the early 2000s just because it looked so cool! ✨💯
Same! I wanted to collect all the books to collect his art!
Yup
The covers are what sets up the setting in your imagination when reading. The whole world is built through those covers. Iconic 👏👏👏
man! what a guy, so humble, down to earth... just an amazing personality really pleased and grateful to know more from the man who gave the identity to goosebumps
100%. Tim’s great!
@@ART-efacts indeed
Those books covers are so iconic. Honestly ❤the art
Totally agree!
I had so many of these books as a kid, specifically because I loved the cover art. Never read a single one, always just loved the art. Today I'm a professional artist hahaha what a surprise.
I definitely owned more than I ever read. I think deep down I was collecting them for their art, almost like trading cards.
Same here hahaha
Jacobus deserves his flowers. What a great part of our childhood and a reason I wanted to become an illustrator 💚
Absolutely!
Gave us our literal childhoods for many, such legendary/iconic books and art.
Tim Jacobus is a once in a lifetime talent. No one can emulate the feeling of being a kid as well as he does with the perspectives
Love the story about how this art teacher called his dad in order to meet him and convenience him to let him go to art school because he saw his talent. You don't here teachers going out of their way to help a student like that anymore.
It’s a great story! Thank God for that art teacher!
the cover art is what pulled me into goosebumps during elementary school. without that amazing artwork, id never have picked up my first one.
Tim Jacobus art was like the lure on a fishing hook. It just brings you in, and once you started reading, you were hooked.
Great analogy!
The reason why I love videos like this, Is that it reminds you that your favorite media had to be made. I feel that people often overlook the work that goes into making something. Tell me, Have you ever looked at the painting on a Goosebumps book cover & wondered: "Hmm, I wonder who painted that?" I bet not. I don't, & I bet most people don't as well. These types of videos help to counteract that, by showing people how it was made. Thank you for not letting artists talent go unrecognized!
Thank you for a great comment!
Dude Im glad you highlighted Jacobus’ art. I had a huge goosebumps collection as a kid and id sit and stare imagining stories based off how cool the art was. The choose your own adventure books were always a trip.
Thank you very much for this video, it was amazing! These covers are legendary, and it makes me very happy to see that the artist behind them is just as legendary himself! So a big thank you to Tim Jacobus too! :)
Extremely appreciative of the way his art stoked my imagination as a kid. Legendary name and artwork.
I have a feeling he inspired a whole generation of artists!
Met him at comic con one year and got his autograph. Cool dude.
Awesome! He’s great.
This man was a giant part of my childhood I remember being with my parents and my grandma who has now passed away, reading and watching goosebumps and always admired the covers, man’s is a legend
Absolutely a legend!
What a beautiful short... genuinely moved me. Goosebumps reshaped my perspective as a child, creatively and substantially. I couldn't believe something that Nightmarish and yet the perfect combination of cartoonish was in SCHOOL libraries!
Spent all my youth in principal offices and pulling my mother out of work in trouble because I couldn't stop drawing monsters or being distracted by drawings in books and would always carry whacky toys. Discovering GOOSEBUMPS sort of justified all that.
Thanks for sharing that. I’m glad you got something out of it!
This is one of the greatest titles in any TH-cam video ever.
I’ll take your word for it!
I really hope he knows how much of a legend he is and the amount of inspiring artist such as myself he inspired.. Im glad he’s doing well ❤️
I spent countless hours staring at goosebump covers. Some of them had easter eggs and it was before the Internet interrupting the art was part of the fun.
"The Headless Ghost" cover art got to me as a kid the most. That was scary and cold with all the blue colors. Tim did deliver the moods. Great art
Those covers are iconic and a big part of what made me pick up these books up as a kid! Wish the tv shows and movies modelled them selves more to the original cover art, part of the reason why Chucky was great in the movie, he looked spot on
I agree 100%
His art is so easily recognizable
He has a great style!
T. Jacobus was the first artist who made me an artist today.
That’s great!
I needed that. I rebought all the books #1-62 and always thought the books wouldn’t have sold what they did, if it wasn’t for the cover art. It was a perfect match
I still have so manny’s of these from my childhood
My older sister had most of these books growing up, I never really read any of them but man the cover art sure has stuck with me ever since.
I wrote Tim a letter when I was 9 years old (after reading It Came From New Jersey, and of course many goosebumps!) and he sent a handwritten letter back with some art. What a nice guy!
Tim if you can read this, thank you! These books were such a big part of my childhood and I loved the art just as much as the actual stories!
Wow 🤩 this is so well put together! This is FANTASTIC! I really appreciate the effort you put into the video! 👊😎
Thank you so much!
This was such a golden age of cover art for teen and kids horror! Goosebumps, Fear Street, Christopher Pike, etc all had such can’t cover art!
This needs so many more views, this guy's art shaped a lot of us through the years, and he is super talented and a really good person, his food drive work is amazing.
Thank you Tim, Thank you for being a part of my childhood.
I read every goosebumps by these 2 as a kid. For years. Later in school the teachers made me stop because they were below my reading level. I couldn’t stop!
These are solid nostalgic images of my childhood. Period ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ so blessed to be a 90's kid!!!!
I would stare at the covers for weeks before reading the books. I love his covers.
This man’s illustrations gave me nightmares in kindergarten, mad respect
Those early ones are terrifying!
How could we have not known? This man is a king with talent!
Mr. Tim, you inspired so many people to do great things, thank you.
Calling all creeps is probally my favorite goosebumps story. Goosebumps was actually the first books I ever read from start to finish that sparked my love for reading till this day.
This guy needs more recognition my whole childhood let alone the reason I love to read was because of the images of the books…
im 40 now and loved these books, my mother used to buy them for me when i was good little boy lol, still to this day, they are my fav books i ever read
Thank you for interviewing him. Goosebumps was definitely a special chapter of my childhood.
Thank you for watching!
This guy is an artistic genius. I remember those goosebump covers as a kid really pulling you into the story before you opened the book😊
What a cool person. Love his artwork for goosebumps, didn’t know he did the Harry Potter series too, big fan of both.
He didn't do the artwork for the Harry Potter series. It was Mary GrandPré. He was just pointing out how artists have key things in their bookcover art, especially when it's a series with the same characters. She's just another iconic artist he thought to make a great comparison in terms of popularity and technique.
@@gothassassin14 my mistake, I must’ve missed understood him.
When I was a lad in school. I saw goosebumps in the library and not gonna lie the artwork made me excited to read the book like ... wow what interesting artwork I wonder what happens when the mummy comes out or what happened in the camp. Thank you sir 🫡
Those covers were really the hook of these books at the Scholastic fairs. They’re definitely what makes the books so collectible and awesome
This man was one of my childhood inspirations for becoming an artist!
Idk what kids reads now a days but I dont think there will ever be something so iconic as goosebumps and the covers were a huge part of it
Goosebumps were a cultural phenomenon, for sure!
Well as a kid the artwork was always the most important factor for me, and my memory of these books is more in terms of the artwork than the actual stories.
So glad this come into my que. Went ahead and purchased two prints. All for a great cause. Thanks for being a huge part of my childhood.
So this is the man behind all that beautiful Goosebumps art! Very kool. The cover automatically made me want to read the books.
I loved the books & the show. Goosebumps was a huge part of my childhood. I can still hear the theme song in my head, lol. Thank you for posting this, I thoroughly enjoyed it 😊👍.
i was OBSESSED with goosebumps cover art as a kid, i'm an animator now, they definitely were a big inspiration for me
Tim Jacobus is one my inspirations.
I don’t think I ever read a single full goosebumps book but I had almost all of them, this guys art is what sold those books, had there been no (or inferior) cover art, no one would know R.L. Stines name.
R. L. Would’ve done alright, but Goosebumps definitely wouldn’t have been as big without Tim. Both working together made it what it was!
i had so many Goosebumps books as a kid. Barely read any of them, just stared at the covers
Remember going to the library and being instantly hooked to these books
I am so glad that so many years later I ocasionally find out such an amazing interview about the legendary Tim Jacobus!
Appause to the author of the video to bring up such a pop-cultural and warm nostalgia from childhood! 🥰 Love it.
P.S. Stay out of the Basement was my first Goosebumps book and I just figured out that it wasn't Jacobus' art 😅
Even when inwas little when these just came out i always felt the cover art was the main reason i ever read these books. Without that art the way it was done those stories would have been dull and boring. The stories complimented the art.
Will never forget in 2008 (kindergarten) just staring at the goosebumps books even though I was scared of some of them but I couldn’t stop 😂
Absolute legend
Absolutely!
I am not going to lie, his cover art terrified me as a kid, that’s why I never read any of the Goosebumps books growing up. But as a grown man in 2015, I finally decided to face my childhood fear and watched the Goosebumps movie on Halloween, and I succeeded.
I used to love reading the Point Horror series back in the 90's and R.L Stine was my favourite author, too.
Didn’t know I needed this. Seeing the cover again reminds me of wishing I could afford them at the book fairs lol. What a Legend!
It wouldn't have been Goosebumps without that breathtaking artwork. He set the tone for each book going in to read it. Incredible artist.
Agreed!
I remember checking out some from my library in elementary school. I always thought the covers were chilling as a kid and conveyed the theme of the story well. Thanks for the memories!
Thanks for watching!
This is crazy the cover art was the 1st thing that peaked my interest then I read the books
Same for me!
As a kid i would look at the covers so much and just imagine the stories in my head
Very recognizable work from him! Cool to know the face behind the artwork! shrunken head was my first read.
I had that one too. Great cover!
The artwork was the only reason why I started reading goosebumps. ❤
Anyone else have almost all of these books and wish you still had them? My Mom sold all of mine at a garage sale. Man I wish I had alot of the old toys and books I had.
My favorite artwork as a kid, hands down. Great interview! Legendary artist.
Goosebumps will forever be my childhood memory! ❤
I remember so many of this man’s covers. Awesome story
His covers stay with you, for sure!
Fantastic work! Absolutely in love with his art!
The art on these book covers is seared into my memory from childhood, absolutely awesome stuff, and funnily the Terror Tower one was one of the most memorable for me!
Thanks Tim for contributing to such a huge amount of people's fond childhood memories ^_^
goosebump books were my childhood Curse at camp cold lake was the first goosebump book I've ever read and will always be my favorite
And it has one of the great covers too!
amen@@ART-efacts
These covers are so nostalgic for me. Outstanding work and cool to get some background on the actual artist.
disney+ has a new series on Goosebumps. bruh it is so well done. Tim Jacobus deserves so much more.
Haven’t watched it yet, but it’s on the to-do list!
This man is a legend i've never seen before. 😅
I still see these covers and it brings joy/ brings me back to better times. 🙌
Still have video of me when I got picked to go on stage and "preform" this Scooby-Doo play at Cedar Point.
Like 7 years old, rocking a baggy purple Goosebumps shirt. 😅
Loved my own purple Goosebumps tee!
Great debut video! That was a fun watch. Hope you gain traction and pop off!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Welcome to Horrorland, parents bought the book at the mall for me. We stopped to eat at a corner restaurant at the mall , book was done right before we hit the car in the parking lot.
His covers are great and a near perfect fit for the type of series Goosebumps is. However, the "Don't Go In The Basement" cover is amazing. I would've loved to see more covers done by that artist.
Such phenomenal art. The saturated colors were always my favorite aspect as a kid growing up with colorblindness. Most colors are heavily muted to me, so when I'd see these covers it was like I was seeing what rich and vibrant colors were like for the first time.
The cover art is what made goosebumps!
Loved the Goosebumps books and the show when I was in Elementary/Jr High...im 40 now and I'm thinking of diving back into the series and starting right from the beginning with the 1st book and try to make it to the last one, I miss being that kid who would go to my local library and book store looking for the books 😊
Anytime a new one dropped it was a thrill!
Man, thank you for making this video. I've forever wondered who made these covers for years and it's so astonishing to find out just how unknown he is. What a nice guy!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
These were the only books I’ve ever read cause the covers were so sick.
Thanks for the memories legend 🫡
Glad I found this in my youtube home. I really think Tim Jacobus is a genius, the other goosebumps covers done from others artists aren't scary as Tim's. In my opinion.
Glad you found it, too!
