  • I do not encourage anyone to enter culverts, unclog anything, or enter flooded areas as it can easily become deadly without the proper training
I unclog drains for fun in my spare time (I have been trained in culvert inspections for years with private co.) and I am osha trained.
Exploring anything abandoned can be dangerous or deadly without experience. I don't encourage anyone to enter any abandoned structures. Not only is safety a concern, but often times its illegal, and when possible I seek out permission from the owner or local police. I simply go to document its history before it's gone forever and I leave things the way I find them. I only take pictures and only leave footprints. I assume all the risks and responsibility before doing this. Please don't attempt to do this on your own. There could be nails, asbestos, falling concrete, soft floors, animals, or other hazards. Thanks for watching.

As I'm sure others have mentioned:
    For dragging sleds,
    a. carry your gear past the first hurdle before you put on snowshoes and load up.
    b. use a long enough rope that you can step inside the rope, this keeps your hand free and keeps your body straight will pulling.
    c. reinforce where the rope goes through the sled with washers.
    d. if you are going to pull it by hand behind you, thread a hollow plastic tube onto the rope so it doesn't cut into your hand.
In general: take 2 pair extra socks, change out if your feet get wet but save 1 pair for sleeping in.
FYI you should have taken off that boot and squeezed out the water once you were inside and then put it back on if needed. Lots of calories to try and warm up that quantity of water in your sock.
Last thing: a piece of tinfoil for in front of the stove in case some embers or a burning stick falls out.

@@daveycrocket4873 Or at least clip the rope to your belt and go on all fours instead of trying to do that in snowshoes. A vaguely similar method is taught to soldiers who are dragging a wounded buddy out of a dangerous area while staying low. In that case, however, the buddy grabs the belt from below. The single-point pullrope could do just that by going around the back and then through the legs in the front. This leaves hands free and bodyweight spread out, making it also a preferred way to drag something, or someone, across thin ice after they fall through.

You mentioned that you expect muscle cramps as you hiked to the culvert camp site and I got a piece of advice that might work for you as well to prevent or alleviate cramps: Chug down a magnesium fizzy tablet half an hour before a tedious hike, as muscles mostly cramp when there is a deficiency of magnesium during intense activity. I do that every time before I head out for a few hours of mountain biking. If you like bananas or apricots, you can munch a bunch of those for the same effect. 😊 Maybe give it a try and see if it works for you.

magnesium and potassium both will help with cramping... the magnesium makes it so u absorb the potassium better while the potassium is what helps with the cramping from the bananas and so on or i might have that backwards... the 2 together is the key... a better source is sunflower seeds and some nuts per weight... and they will last much longer and easily carried.... i would cramp up alot when i worked outside carpentry and peanuts and sunflower seeds quickly became a permanent part of my tool pouch

I have camped out on my covered screen deck. In upstate NY. Between May and November some years. In the cold extremes (mid-30s F) we discovered a good system for staying warm. On the wood deck, I slept on an open sleeping bag. I lay on a flat sheet. Covered by another sheet. An afghan with big holes in the pattern it's meant to have. The next few layers are smaller and smaller holed blankets. I usually topped off with a comforter or an open sleeping bag. If you tuck your hands under your pillow they stay pretty warm. Didn't own or use a porch heater either.

Man I'm about 3 quarters of the way through this video, and I just couldn't stand it anymore I just had to tell you that this is absolutely the coolest video I have yet to see on TH-cam! Im just truly shocked, because I really want to do what you do. I have really wanted to start taking some over nighters camping, I would love to try it in a culvert too. The idea just blows my mind, and hopefully I can try this sometime in the near future, if I can just get the nerve. For some time now I have been watching people taking overnighters everywhere, but your idea is by far the best. PLEASE keep up the camping videos because some of us must live through your adventures until we are able to create our own videos! I truly THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

Haha! That reminds me so much of when I did the arctic warfare training with the Army in Norway! We had sleds called 'Pulks' and they required two guys in front to pull and another two behind pushing with their ski poles. When it came to downhill, because the pulks were so heavy, if you weren't quick enough, the pulks would run away and run down the guys in front and then drag the whole squad downhill! We'd all get squashed down into the snow and have to start again! Great fun!

Wanted to share a tip. Red lights are used to stay hidden, but that's because of how easy it is to see. Red is the longest wavelength and most visible, so you can keep the light very low, dim enough to not be seen faraway, and it still works, but if you use a bright red light it is even easier to see than regular light. Keep it very dim.

On your sled, don’t poke holes in the back for second rope. That will void warranty, and that really isn’t necessary. Turn the sled around for downhill. The square tail will plow snow and provide some extra braking.
    Thanks again for the video.

I ended up ordering that same stove after seeing your last hot tent video! Haven't used it yet.. but I ended up going to Home Depot and bought all new stainless steel screws to replace the ones the stove came with to hold on the legs and stovepipe connector. The screws it came with are really cheezy, the leg screws have such huge phillips pattern they're just waiting to be stripped out by trying to wrench them down tight, and one of the smaller ones was malformed and the threads were catawampus and wouldn't even screw on. After replacing the screws the legs stay on a lot better.
Edit: Also regarding the stove pipes bits fitting inside for transport, you probably already noticed this but its a bit easier if you make sure the wider flared part of the pipes face the inside of the stove since the door seems to be the squeeze point, and its a tiny bit easier when all the narrow sides face the same outward way I noticed.

These are so cool. I remember as a kid going through a long culvert that opened up to a river at the opposite end. It only went through if the river flooded. It was so cool as a kid. Like discovering another land on the opposite end. Narnia except it was through a closet. Glad you were able to warm up your feet from the water. Was a little worried when that happened. Thanks for another great video. Il sure there will be some haters for one reason or another. Just move on & don’t even finish readying them. ❤. PS…hope to see a return to box truck camp. See how the temporary roof is doing. Crazy how Earl you got it inside. Definitely looked like it was comfortable in there.

I haven't looked through all the comments yet to see if anyone suggested it, but perhaps a folding camping utensil set should go in your camp box. It has a spoon, fork, knife, and sometimes a corkscrew or bottle opener. That way you would always have one with you.

The things you do for us viewers, I hope you somewhat enjoyed this one at the end, because it was some hard work. And just imagine the awkwardness if some snowmobile guy saw the tracks going down into the river, trying to maybe help, seeing a freaking chimney coming out of it, and actually stumbling down, getting afraid himself too ( what is living here?) , to you and asking: What are you DOING in here! And what do you answer? 'OOh hi, just cooking some sausages! LOOL! I myself couldn't cope with that part, let alone sleeping in a culvert in winter.

In the note section of your cell phone, make a checklist of items that you forgot as you remember. Such as a pillow, pot holders, more magnets, seasoning, butter, fork, spoon, and aluminum foil. Take your time packing for your camping trips and check off items that you need from your list. It seems like you forget something every trip. 👍

Another successful camp; congratulations Sir, wonderful job. It's fascinating watching these camping videos, and getting an idea of what we would need and what we would need to do, if we had to create an emergency shelter. It would be awesome to do this with a friend, to chat the night away.
I like to imagine a preceding event like surviving a plane crash in the wilderness, being on the run or an enviromental disaster that would necessitate an escape into the wilderness. Personally I feel the pull to just abandon everything and leave for the wilderness to live far away from humans.
