“How do two brothers get into the nail care business?” This is the single most common question people ask us. There’s a long and rocky version but we’ll give you the short one. We have our fearless and unconventional mother, Young Salo, to thank. With a single-minded entrepreneurial spirit, she decided to start her own business at the age of 49. She had a passion for the nail industry and we did everything in our power to support her. In the end, this is a family business.
Greg, the older brother, became a licensed nail technician after switching gears from fire fighter’s training. He is energy personified and has a true passion for developing the best professional nail care products and education. Habib is the younger brother. He jumped in a few years later; taking a detour from medical school and a life in music. He brings his own creative mind for business, marketing and strategy. Unexpectedly, we are a perfect team.
Today, more than 20 years later, Young Nails Inc., is a professional nail care manufacturing company exporting to over 40 countries worldwide and distributing domestically to over 3000 stores. We’re respected for our next-level product innovation and education. Our mission is to bring you the best quality products and we’ll show you how to use them with incredible results. It’s really that simple.
Welcome to the Young Nails family!

My business is a 2 person salon situation and before 2020 it was just me. We are in an obscure location without a lot of foot traffic. For all these reasons we are appointment only. If I have a walk-in and a full day I would never be able to take a walk-in and it would be a bad situation for the client waiting & getting upset. Also I had 3 jobs while building my business so when I didn’t have clients I was out driving Uber between clients and dropping off business cards etc. walking don’t work for us. I can’t wait around hoping someone walks in. I used to work 7 days a week and waiting around isn’t giving me money. So I went out and found potential clients.

It’s so interesting how it’s different everywhere. I estimate that about 85% of my clients are on vacation and are not going to be repeat clients. So taking appointments works best for me as I can fill my day ahead of time with these people on vacation and know exactly who is coming in and when and what services they need. I actually had to take down the sign that says “walk-ins welcome” because I can never fit a walk-in in my schedule. My life outside my business with my kids and my husband, etc does not allow a lot of flexibility and so if you want to get your nails done by me when you are visiting my town, you will need an appointment. I’m happy to refer them to other salons though, so that these walk-ins still can get their nails services because I believe there is more than enough nail business in my town for all of us to be successful!

Everyone now days is digital payments with online booking and I think it's sad. Anthony Bourdain says no reservations and I love that. I think appointments can be cool and good money but it's just more stress dealing with the internet. I guess I'm half and half but love a cool shop with walk ins and cash only...

My in home studio is by referral or appointment only. This is my "Side" job and I do it for fun mostly. I live in a very small town and frankly, I will not offer my services to anyone. Maybe it seems a bit snobby?.... but it is not my main source of income so I choose my clients.

These biz talks are life changing!!! Thank you!
Could you do a segment where you answer people’s questions and how you would handle awkward client scenarios?
Also, can you do another segment where we send you pictures of sets and you tell us how much you would charge? I’m on several nail groups on FB, and that is something a lot of people ask (they post a pic and ask us how much would you charge) and it would be cool to hear your professional opinion.
    You guys are awesome thanks!!!

I’ve always been appointment only for 18 years .. never had a problem.. for me it’s time management, and not all products can be worked on top of eachother .. unfortunately.. theres a lot of problems that’s come in that aren’t easily solved in a walk in.
Also I am one person no reception only myself .. usually booked three plus weeks out. And not in a walk in area either .

This is great info I just moved into my own salon suite and decided to go independent. Actually just recently on February 1 of this year. I have a clientele already but you can never have enough. So I was definitely debating on opening my schedule to the public, taking walk-ins or just booking them myself. But this is great knowledge thank you guys

The salon I was a regular at was appointment only because they were pretty popular, but a very small business with only three nail techs. I think it definitely had something to do with the fact that they didn’t have a receptionist and the three nail techs were always busy with someone so when people would just walk in, it would take away from one of the client’s time as the nail tech spoke with the person that walked in and explained things, tried to book an appointment, etc. I preferred it that way because I knew that they were taking enough time to do a really good job with me and not just trying to take in as many people as they could and rush through the appointment to take the walk-in that’s waiting for a tech.

I miss having both. The salon I’m at doesn’t do walk-ins now because of covid. It’s bull. The management makes people go outside and make an appointment. It’s stupid but people do it because so many places have closed down permanently.

90% of my business pre-covid were standing or by appointment. Occasionally I would pick up a client from the stylists...but timing was usually a problem. Since covid only about 20% of my clients have standings...the rest call for an appointment when they are ready. Living in So Cal people are not traveling or going out much, so they postpone as long as they can. I can't wait to get back to "normal!"

Appt. only is a bit ridiculous. Sometimes life just happens and maybe ur time opens up, or u might get sick, or u break 2 nails and have a job interview the next day. To treat walk-ins different is just B.S. As someone who’s worn nails for almost 30 years, I still expect a GREAT job even if my appt is a last minute.

I’d love to hear Tracy’s opinion on single salon suites. Since there is overhead, but I’m assuming overhead cost in a single suite would be different than a full blown salon.
