  • On today’s Biz Talk, Habib and Tracey talk about those super picky clients who are never fully satisfied with their nails. Tracey recounts her experience with picky clients, how she communicated with them, and when it’s probably for the best to not do their nails anymore.

“How do two brothers get into the nail care business?” This is the single most common question people ask us. There’s a long and rocky version but we’ll give you the short one. We have our fearless and unconventional mother, Young Salo, to thank. With a single-minded entrepreneurial spirit, she decided to start her own business at the age of 49. She had a passion for the nail industry and we did everything in our power to support her. In the end, this is a family business.
Greg, the older brother, became a licensed nail technician after switching gears from fire fighter’s training. He is energy personified and has a true passion for developing the best professional nail care products and education. Habib is the younger brother. He jumped in a few years later; taking a detour from medical school and a life in music. He brings his own creative mind for business, marketing and strategy. Unexpectedly, we are a perfect team.
Today, more than 20 years later, Young Nails Inc., is a professional nail care manufacturing company exporting to over 40 countries worldwide and distributing domestically to over 3000 stores. We’re respected for our next-level product innovation and education. Our mission is to bring you the best quality products and we’ll show you how to use them with incredible results. It’s really that simple.
Welcome to the Young Nails family!

I had a client like that. Kept her for 2 yrs even though I felt sick to my stomach on every day when I seen her name in my schedule on the day she was booked. after 2 years, I told her she needed to find a new tech, and she was furious. Said noone else would do her nails the way I did.etc etc.....
She was the first person I ever did that with, and I was soooo relieved she was gone. I have never had one like her since, and I am soooo glad I finally stopped working on her.

I have a client who always puts her monocles every time I do her nails. She’s a nice lady but goodness she is picky as heck. “Polish under the nail tips, polish under the side walls, you forgot the corners, the smile line doesn’t match up with this one, this one is a little higher than this one”
I am a perfectionist but she is definitely taking it to another level. She is making me fall behind on my other clients and I just don’t know what else to do because after when I FINALLY fix everything she does end up happy. She doesn’t pay a lot of money for her nails lol this is a family owned nail salon so this is your typical $30 set, I’m at my wits end.. help me!

I don't mind if they are picky if it's legit. Because sometimes you can overlook something. And they pay for good beautiful nails. And I fix it if it's legit. But when a client comes back and praising you for your work and then says ; the other nailtech was cheaper and I got the glitter for free. I'm a very direct person , so I look at them( even be busy with their 💅) and then I say : first; I'm not the other nailtech and second; that's why you keep coming back 🙃 and then I procede with there nails. And I tell them never to say that to me again 🤔

I had that happen to me about 4 months ago. I was with a client for 6 hours because she was so picky. Of course she also had a pedicure, but when I did her enhancements, she was super picky! I cut her off right after that. Not dealing with that kind of energy lol

  • @bbplizzybee

I love Tracey's commitment to open communication. And she is great about setting boundaries. It sounds like a lot of clients come in with unrealistic expectations. I am a mental health professional who deals with these issues myself in my work. Speaking in the "I form" helps. For example, "I am sorry you are not pleased with your service," or "I heard you say you wanted your artwork to look....etc." Although I am not a nail tech, I think that a beginner would benefit from setting boundaries and using clear communication, at the start of their career. One final suggestion: there are many videos here on TH-cam that talk (and provide training) about "Active Listening." Work on listening skills in addition to refining your acrylic and gel skills! :)

I haven’t gotten there yet with a picky client since I’m a beginner and practicing my work on family members for free. And I’m already thinking about giving my “customers” names. My mom tried snagging my brush from my hand to correct what SHE wanted and I told her “Uhh-Uhh! Did you just try snagging my brush?” She said “nooo” I said “don’t snag my brush or I will call you the brush snagger “ sooo it’s already happening 🙄🙄🙄😓

Most of the pickiness I've experienced has been more education-related, rather than my actual work ("Put *the product* on my skin", "Cut this off", "I don't like those drills", "I bleed every time someone does a manicure on me...")
I do, however, need to work on my own pickiness, as I get in my head way too much, always thinking I could've or should've done something differently.

Ironically, it’s my mom who is my pickiest client. She had literally never had her nails done, EVER, up until about a year ago. She keeps her nails very short, so it seems like there wouldn’t be too much to criticize - WRONG! She often wants very intricate art (she loves 3D things on her very short nails) and then complains how long she has to sit for it because she’s made me start over ten times. I just tell her that she’s welcome to go somewhere else and pay (I do them for free, obviously), and get nails that are a mess. She keeps coming back to me, so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes picky clients are the worst but worse than that is fidgety clients I so bad for me to deal with. Do you have any advice for me to help stop them fidgeting. It is so bad trying to do art and they are fidgeting. As in trying to do a really straight line when they are moving around. Would be so pleased to receive any advice you could give.

My dad always said a thing, “It doesn’t have to be so good as long as it’s perfect.” He was literally the worst perfectionist and did a number on me to make sure I was one as well. It’s taken so many years to teach myself to accept little flaws and imperfections, especially when it comes to nail art. I have to remind myself that it is art and not a printed copy that the client is asking for. I may just be my own worst nemesis 😂😂😂

What do you do if a client orders a basic pedicure, but keeps telling you to do this and that and pointing out every tiny area of skin on the foot the toes skin and telling you to keep cleaning and nipping dead skin, which is a spa pedicure service, not a basic pedicure service.. I offered an upgrade to a callous elimination wrap which would include all of the removal of the dead shriveled skin.. but the client refused. Then the client was talking about me on the phone in a foreign language which I understand some of and calling me names.. which made me feel uneasy for the rest of the appointment

Unfortunately you may experience clients like this, but stay calm and professional and explain what services you offer and what is included in them. If they refuse to pay the additional, that is their choice and you only do what service they are paying for. If the client is rude to you or disrespectful, you have every right to end the service & not re-book them

On the one hand....if I'm going to go to a nail tech on a regular basis, I want her to do the nails that I want.....and I know what I want. But on the other hand.....after doing the nails and they just continually look for something to pick apart....this would be difficult to deal with and I would have to say if I was a nail tech....after a few appointments like that....they wouldn't be coming to me anymore. I think that there are a specific group of women who are like this, and these people have inadequacies within themselves....not in you, and no one should have to tolerate that kind of behavior.

When I first started. I had a client that was told I was new at nails. She still sat on my chair. She wanted a pedicure with gel polish and a acrylic fill (pink and white). One nail tech helped me a little through the service. When I was done she proceeded to yell at me to the point that I was crying. No one said anything to her they just let her yell at me.. I work as a RN and if I could get rid of some ‘’regular” patients, I would completely, lol. There was this one lady always complaining, making the whole floor miserable, people calling in sick, because they feared that they would have them as a patient. When we suggested to transfer them to an other hospital, they changed their mind at the last minute. We then tried again and the other hospital refused, because they didn’t want nothing to do with them and their toxic behaviour. 😭 Anyway, I love listening to this podcast, because it’s giving me tips even though it’s a completely different business !
