- What is an actuary salary? Are actuaries rich? What do actuaries earn?
These are valid questions that you might be asking yourself as you enter your actuary journey.
Today we will cover:
-What goes in to an actuary salary
-How I got to my current salary
-Other compensation that I earn
As always, leave your questions in the comments and I'll try to answer as many as I can!
Thank you for calling
That's my 6:20 minutes of my life wasted and I'll never get back...
so what is your salary..... :/
YOU ARE SUCH AN INSPIRATION!! KEEP DOING WHAT YOU DO. THANK YOU FOR EDUCATING US! ALL THE WAY FROM SOUTH AFRICA.
Thank you!
Gurl! I love your personality! This is why I watch your videos. Finally, a fun-type-of actuary.
+Ron Jason Aborita 😀👍Thank You!
i can't stop procrastinating....
HELP!!!!!!!!!!
Get back to whatever you're supposed to be doing!!!!
So...how much do you make?
much, its much
Which school did you study actuarial science in ?
As someone who talks to various actuary students/actuaries and teaches some actuary courses, I just wanted to share a few thoughts on the profession (and if anyone is in the industry and disagrees then please do correct me!)
Basically, IF you pass some exams and get an actuary job, then it really is a pretty damn sweet job: good pay, relatively stress free (compared to other business/finance related jobs), paid study time (I thought I misheard one actuary when he said this!), and good job security (no matter what the economy does, we all will need insurance and whatnot...)
That being said, the exams (even the 'easy' ones, P and FM) are not easy at all, and unless the situation has changed recently, it can be difficult to find a job, even if you have multiple (3 or 4) exams under your belt (especially if you don't have internship experience, which to me is BS, but it is what it is), so it might not be the best career if you don't live (and can't move to) a place with a lot of insurance companies.
Also, I've had students who did actuarial internships come back and say to me that it's more boring than they expected (though I'm not sure what they expected considering actuaries are business professionals... so yes please don't go into the profession thinking it'll be like your college math courses!)
Lastly, as she says, spend time reading Actuarialoutpost.com!!! I can't emphasize how much honest information is there. Plus, it can get pretty damn funny in there (for example when ignorant idiots with public identities don't realize that they are actually arguing with experienced hiring managers and other industry leaders).
Josh Isralowitz I might be late but I have a question for you , sir. What chances do I have to pass the actuary exams by only studying online courses and youtube videos ? P.S. : I actually am a educational math student in my college right now on my last year too and I don't see myself as a full time math teacher ( I know I'm late to just figure that out ). Just thought you might wanna know this and I hope you can answer my question ? 🤞🏻
@@KuwaitiBerlin If you are OK with just printed/PDF material, then study guides (usually by ACTEX or ASM) are the gold standard. Online, I've heard good things about TIA and Coaching Actuary, and some people say they just use these material. So yes absolutely fine. Just have calculus up to and including multvariable calculus mastered and you're OK to start one of these!
@@KuwaitiBerlin Sorry for not replying sooner. I don't know of any good youtube sources (my youtube videos are god for learning the BASICS of exam FM material, but they do NOT do a good job preparing you for exam level problems).
TIA (the infinite actuary) seems to be one of the most liked online course resource for exam P and FM. There's some argument over that vs Coaching Actuaries, but those two are the most popular it seems by far.
I am very familiar with study guides (physical printed notes/PDFs) and ACETEX for P/ASM for FM will most emphatically prepare you well for those two. I don't know much about other exams. Hope that helps!
This video looks like you had tried to film the same video earlier in the day, but when you went to import the video, the file got corrupted. Just my impression though. Just the vibe you're giving off.
You get me.
Go away fake Ellelle. Stop trying to impersonate the real one!
Lol This is funny xD
lol
Well, what did you expect? She's an actuary
According to BLS they make $90k a year on average with a bachelors degree being the entry level degree needed to get a job as one, its heavily math based so it is a STEM type of degree,
Great vid. You're gaining momentum. Keep the ball rollin. Cheers.
Gaining momentum with what?
You are the best Elle...very simple presentation but very well understandable
This video left me feeling disappointed, no salary??
From an actuary i expected more real numbers!...... nah werre good
try listening at 1.5x speed.lol
thanks xD
Thats already at 1.5🤣🤣🤣
No don’t!!! Your head actuary EXPLODE!!!!

"Subscribe to see more of my face." Hilarious!
Did she say her salary? 🤔
Couldn't finish vid
The question is how much u actually make it? 😆
I just wonder where can I ask my doubts of actuarial science studies.
Please help...kinda worried as I got no one to discuss my doubts with.
same...😥
Doubts mid study or doubts about whether to become an actuary at all?
Your facial expressions are gold!
I'm basically a model
no lie, I heard actuaries do modeling
@@k3vinz_ funny guy
Hey Ellelle! I noticed on your video about "taking your first actuarial exam" you mentioned two study manuals: ASM Study manual vs the Actex study manual. Why did you stick with the ASM study manual after exam p? What were the ups and downs between the two?
+I Z I don't remember thinking that they were particularly different. I had just heard that actex was better for P, ASM was better for the rest, and I passed so I can't complain 😀
I hope you make a video like a day in the life of being an actuary analyst
I think her salary isn't that huge that's why she didn't mention it.
Solid theory. I approve.
Hi Ellelle. I just completed my bachelor degree in statistics this semester and I would like to engage in actuarial in the future. I am thinking about should I study by myself for those actuarial exams or should I continue with a master degree of actuarial science?
Exams
Is it legal to tell people to not disclose their salary?
How good do risk actuaries earn?
Can you recommend a book for aspiring actuary as to what they will be studing in the course ?
Yes
hii omgg im in grade 7 and loves math so i’m looking for any possible job that has anything to do with math . if i decide not to do actuary , do u have any other suggestions ? thank u :)
Thx for all the information but I got a question: what kind of computer do you recommend for the career?
What do you mean? PC vs mac?
@@Actuaryelle exactly
what computer you use is not as important as what programs you know.
Really nice and helpful video. As far as college goes, was getting your Actuarial Mathematics degree “hard”? Keep in mind this may seem like a dumb question since I haven’t started college yet (next year I will) but I will be studying Actuarial Science and am just trying to figure out what I can expect as far as the degree goes, not factoring the exams into the equation.
+Dylan Olson I'm a terrible person to ask, because I'm one of those obnoxious people who says she's failing everything and ends up with A's.
Yes it's hard. But it's doable.
EllelleActuary its really funny you say that because I am the exact same way. Makes me feel a little better hah. Thanks!
bobby288 thats what i figured for the most part. I am in the same boat as you just one year behind. I will be exempt from stats/calc1 and calc2/econ courses thanks to ap tests so I am hoping I’ll be able to handle everything. Thanks!
So whats better PC or Mac for the career? (Programs compatibility and stuff)
I've always used a PC
Linux.
How do you find the senior actuaries or senior staff to you in your workplace? Are they nice people? I say this because many are notoriously bad with bedside manner and are very impatient, that's the impression.
They are all very kind people, in my experience
@@Actuaryelle good to hear. I worked for 9 1/2 years in an investment consulting firm in NZ. unfortunately I didnt progress with the exams beyond a couple, and i couldn't say the same thing about the senior staff there. I'm 36 and looking at giving it another go, perhaps by doing an actuarial degree part time. This one I'm looking at can provide exemptions to the CT subjects ie. Financial math etc
Thanks for the continuing education and fun, as always!
+Modern Buddha 😀👍
being an FCAS in the mid 20s is fantastic. Some people have an innate math and logical mind. It's quite elite.
Sir FCAS degree is for investment actuary ? If not then is there any other specific degree for an investment actuary?
Elle, that voice at 4:10 Ever consider ed comedy ? :)
Nope!
What's your salary now? 😅😁
i didnt hear you say what your salary is??
U didn't say how much you make or did i miss it
My payment is2core per month
How do you study
Which is best
SOA

CAS

INDIAN ACTUARY?
Can a indian boy who passed 12th in commerce field can join SOA ?
Define "best"
@@Actuaryelle sort of like easy and fast which take short time to become a ACTUARY
Can an actuarist work from home?
what is your salary amount
I have a question, do quants make more than actuaries since they have mastery over much more difficult mathematics, stochastics? Also how is the quant market in Canada?
No idea
From this video i have discovered everything my mother said about Canadians is true
Can u plz explain fellowship and associate
This is just a cry for attention. You never actually gave straight answers.
Correct. Have a nice day.
EllelleActuary I will thanks haha. 😊 and you too.
I am an indian student ...i want to pursue my acturial degree in abroad..can u plzz help me to know the procedure and qualifications for pursuing it abroad..i really need it..!!
Ps: i m in 12th right now..
*Raises his hand* I have a question: obviously there are oodles of books to learn actuarial math. But what's a good path (beside taking a bunch of business and economics courses at a college or university) for someone to learn the practical economics/business knowledge and just basic practical insurance knowledge that they need to know to be an actuary (but not necessarily to pass exams)? Has anyone put together a book combining all this?
I'm not aware of a book like that
Oh well. Thanks for the reply though! Back to grading I go...
In terms of benefits, do you get reasonable time off? Is taking vacations feasible for an actuary?
I get 3 weeks vacation 😀
If a Grade 12 Ontario Student is supposed to select a Univ. for Actuarial Sc. studies, and if the student would like to specialize in stock market perform/risk analysis please let me know the preference of Universities from among the following three:
Univ. of Toronto
Western Univ.
Waterloo Univ.
Thank you in advance
I cant pick a university for you, sorry
@@Actuaryelle Maybe, I did not word the question properly. There are lots of factors in deciding which one is a better univ. for a given student. So, that kind of decisions are more personal. My question was regarding the ranking.
I was doing an online research and this is what I found... If it is purely mathematics, rankings are as follows (from Maclean 2017)...
UofT (1st), Waterloo (3rd}, McMaster {8th), Queens (16th), Western (18th), York {20th}.
I couldn't find a ranking in terms of Actuarial Sc. Converting Math ranking to Actuarial ranking may not be a good idea. So, the question will be, given that you are in the field, how would you rank the three universities?
I didnt go to university in Ontario and wouldn't have any basis for ranking them
Just wondering are actuaries primarily employed in large cities or are there openings in smaller cities as well
I've never really looked into it, sorry
hello miss.
i m currently in 10+2 i.e i m in high school and i want to know should i go for bachelors in actuarial studies and then give ACET(i m from india so from institute of actuaries india) or i can do my bachelors in engineering then i go for ACET .
pls respond.
hey bro. exactly the same thing overwhelming my mind. help me with that, what bachelor degree should i get to pursue actuary?
Could you tell me whether I need to give entrance exam?? If yes what type of materials do I need?
You are broke If you have time to watch this
Do you get paid for the extra hours that you spend in the office? For example your contract says that you'll be working 40 hours a week but let's say you had a busy week and you spent 60 hours in the office do you get paid for those extra 20 hours? Thank you! :)
I don't work 60 hour weeks, but hypothetically if I did, I'd be able to take days off as "compensation"
How is it possible your salary increased once you moved from Montreal, everybody says its cheaper, is it taxes what makes it more expensive? best
Cost of living is higher in Toronto so salaries are higher in Toronto. Rent is higher. Public transportation costs are higher. Haircuts are more expensive 😂 Toronto is just more expensive than Montreal
“My actuary salary” without telling you my actual salary
Happy new year! How's 2019 treating you so far?
Good thank you, I am a CA that actually changed from actuarial science in my first year of studies... so that is why I would have loved to get an actual number, ps i am in my second year of being a CA, and one year left to becoming an CFA aswell...
Good luck with your CFA!
And just by the way you are insanely hot
@@zandervandermerwe8191 Dude...
Can you please compare actuaries and quantitative analysts if you have friends on the other side as well? Thank you.
I thought that you are going to give a number. I was thinking about going for the course but now I have decided to go against it.
What do you plan to do instead?
Can someone replay to this comment cause I am 17 I would like to know more cause college season is almost here
she gets paid about 400,00 to 500,000 based on her hand movement.
At least
Hey Ellelle are you active on LinkedIn ?
+cHickY ChUcK nope
EllelleActuary okay:(
Best social media network by far.
You are not very typical actuarial. Most actuaries in my career don’t talk much.
We are all unique individuals in life
Will a Bachelor of Science in Economics be enough to work in actuaries? I know one thing you need to be good with number crunching and usually a bachelor of science in economics could come in handy with quantitative classes
I heard you should be fine in fact ideal in the UK. Maths Physics Engineering, economics and chemistry are the jobs they look at
You would have to do some training first to become an actuary if you're doing non acturial science degree compared to an actuarial science degree where you don't need training .
Doe actuaries earn more than accountants? Or is it the other way around?
Not sure
So according to this video you can work as an actuary without taking all those tests? Sorry if this is an ignorant question, only just discovered this field
As an entry level actuary, people generally start working after 1 or 2 exams and then continue to take exams while they work
I see, would I be able to for example, become a math teacher, take two actuary exams, and be able to get a job as an actuary? Or do I need some degree that has a focus on actuary math?
Any degree will work
Can you tell me whether to join a college/class or just do self study for actuarial exams ?
Just rename your video already. You didn't say what "My actuary salary" actually was.
Ah but this title makes it more enticing to potential viewers
Done being actuary in Canada.. canada is no place for an ambitious actuary! Either move to states or go other places for sight seeing !
You probably made a video answering these questions and if you remember making one please tell me which ones to watch but I was just wondering a few things
-can you work from home/how long would you think it takes to earn the priveledge of working from home
-how much time does being an actuary actually take out of your life
-do you think everything in all your videos can apply to being an actuary in the United States too, since you live in canada
At my current job, I can work from home a couple days a week, not permanently.
Since I've finished my exams, being an actuary is just my job. When I was studying, it was on my mind a lot more often.
Not everything I say applies to the US, no
EllelleActuary
thank you, I am still a high school student right now and I know I am not completely set on actuaries but I love math and am super grateful for your videos
Wait so even if you are a fellow if you don't have a lot of work experience you will still start as an actuarial analyst?
Depends on the company's policy.
In my high school, i had never learned any subjects including bussiness. Is it possible for me to study Actuary?
Yes of course!
@@Actuaryelle so what is it all about

It's gone up 😎
It seems you were holding back some information between 4:15 to 4:18. It was a very cute try. Thank you for the information, it is very much helpful.

Correct
I would todally...
I am studying bs in actuarial sciences tell me what can i do after this plzzzz
Become an actuary?
I know that being an actury we should passes exams can i prepare with my slef or i join some coaching clasess
@@faizan2298 I recommend study guides: Actex for exam P, and ASM for exam FM. I don't know off the top of my head good ones for the others. They aren't cheap, but you will pass if you go through them, particularly emphasizing taking mock exams under exam conditions. I can't emphasize this latter point enough. I also I think talk of "you should study X hours" is nonsense. Study the material, take the mock exams under exam conditions. If you do well, you're ready...
BTW what is slef?

Is it even legal for employers to tell people not to disclose their salaries in Canada?
Not sure
Did your employers ask you what your salary was at your previous jobs?

10 exams + 3 VEEs + 2 online courses + 1 course on professionalism 😀

Good choice! What would you like to know?
Wow I wish I new what I wanted to do at your age
Do good on math I mean real good , like Chinese people good
How many exams will I do to become an actuary
It depends on the path you take. I had to do 10 exams to become an FCAS :)
May I ask how old you are?
how far it will be benificial to have a masters degree in actuaries or some other with 3 or 4 actuarial exams for a job to a fresher ?
I'm sorry I don't understand your question
Is it neccesary to have a post graduate degree with 3 or 4 papers of ct series to have a good chance of getting the job ?
The majority of the actuaries that I know here in Canada only have a bachelor's degree
